Fix YOUR School!

Starting Tuesday, you're going to see highlights of a conversation I recently had with 11 of Georgia's brightest high school students.Β  The project is called "Fix Our Schools," and while it airs on CNN and CNN Student News this week, we're looking for your ideas on how you'd fix your school.

What one change would make the most difference in your education?

One change that could occur to your school is uniforms. I say this because, some students can not afford nice clothes or nice shoes. Another reason for uniforms are because, it would help by not having as many bullying problems. If students are not in ISS or suspended then they would be in the classroom learning. As our principal says " We want to be the best", so if were learning and making good grades then we could be the best.

I would change many things about my school. One thing I would change is the time we start. Studies show that school's with a later time preform better.

My school needs to stop serving kids greasy foods. Instead, have food backed with less grease. Our pizza dripps with grease; it's that bad.

I think my school should go over the things we did last school year. At my school your expected to remember the things that we did last year. Even if you didn't go there they give you a test on what they say your supposed to know the curriculum.

My School is one of the oldest in Texas and this year, they tore down the oldest part of the building that almost a million students attended. Now, classes are so far apart because the old annex next to our school is being used for classes that most students end up walking about a mile every day, just between class!
Plus, the sense of community has gone down dramatically because everyone is either in a hurry to get to their class across the parking lot or they are so aggrivated at the people walking slowly in front of them that they don't want to talk to new people.
There are also construction workers all over the school making tons of noise. Most of the History and English classes are now based in the parking lot thanks to a collection of 20-30 temporary buildings and all you can hear is the machinery and the beeping of people backing out.
The worst part is that, as much as I have tried to get even little things to change, my district refuses to do anything and continues to laugh in our faces.
In conclusion, the one thing I would do to change education would be that, when large construction projects are going to take place on any campus, students would need to be displaced to a temporary campus or to other camupses in the district so that construction can happen more efficently without disrupting the way students learn and interact with eachother.

I agree with Alicia about the Water instead of milk because kids could be lactose intolerant and not have milk. Also since it reaches normally over 100 degrees where I am from, I think we need water to re-hidrate our body. Also, I believe that we should have more fun ways to learn our assignments. Most kids don't do their homework because they are to lazy or it not fun, well I think that if our work was fun, kids would want to their homework, there for making test scores rise, because they learn the material in a fun distinct way.

One thing that the school should change is when school starts. I think that it should start at 9:30, so our first period teacher is not telling people to pick their head up off the desk every morning. I think that with a little more sleep students will be a more attentive.

A good school is somewhere you can feel wanted or comfortable. Maybe a good school is where the teachers actually help you when you need it. Another reason could be better lunchs. I mean, Who doesn't like a good lunch once in a while ? There are many different ways to discribe a good school or something you can fix at your school. Thats what a good school is in my eyes.

I contend that the biggest challenge comes from the educational system. The mode is possiblely not good for our country. Someone has to stand up,and speak for us students, but till now do few people have the courage to fight for the benefit for us. Possiblely, it is partially because of politics.(I come from China).

i would fix my school by getting more student to help with the funraiser for the dances, more dances, help with the pre-rallies, and getting our school more aware what things you can do both in and out of school raising a higher school spirit which can be more willing to do more to help the school

    I live in s.korea.
I think my school changes to much!
from milks to books, partners and teachers.
If I think there's got to be a change, It will be the gym.
If there's a gym in our school, students can play or exercice a lot better.
there are many really fat kids in my school!

I go to a school with uniforms, i would fix my school in a way to where we wouldnt have to where uniforms but had a certain dress code, and my school is a little school so bullying wouldnt be an issue. Uniforms are only good for those who actually WANT to wear them, other than that their a nuicense.

A change in my school could be bigger buses or more of them. There are a lot of people in a small space and increase the amount of time we have to get out of school. We have 5 minutes to use the bathroom get stuff out of locker and go down stairs.

I think our school is almost perfect to me but I think our school should make students exercise during recess even if it's only 10 minutes. (Well, I'm not from U.S., so school is kind of different. )

    1. We need better lunch food. Once, we had a bouncy sausage and everyone called it rubber... 😦
    2. Maybe lessen recess time-It's not over an hour but I'd rather use that time to learn more.
    3. Get better-educated teachers.

Shanyia: At my school we wear uniforms. We have to pay $1.00 to dress down on Fridays and I think it should be .50 instead. If dress down is only .50 we can use the rest of the money to buy other things.

Sincerity: If I could fix one thing about my school it would be for more students to follow the rules. If they follwed the rules, there would be less trouble.

Noah: At my school we wear uniforms, and I think we should wear regular clothes OR uniforms beacuse some people cant afford to buy uniforms antd they could buy the clothes they already have.

Matthew: I think I we should change the school budget so we can have more school supplies for those who dont have them.

Kayla: I think we should put AC on each bus.

Most of the teachers at my school are amazing, but some just sit at their desks all day, and put on a video for the students to watch and take notes. It's extremely important to have good, hands-on teachers that care about the students. I think that the administrative staff at my school should monitor the lazy teachers that do the bare minimum, as well as the great, active, teachers that come to school extremely early so they can help the students.

I belive that my school needs to be fixed "spirit wise". We haven't had a pep rally yet this year and we have already had our 1st home and away game. We have a new principle this year and maybe he has his reason for not allowing us to have one but all the students deserve a pep rally. Pep rallys get the students excited about supportng their teams. Pep rallys also help inform students about upcoming events and also help get them active in school functions and activities. No one wants to go to a boring school. School sprirt is needed everywhere ESPECIALLY MY SCHOOL ! !

Schools need to make sure the students have school spirit and have pride for their school. If the students have pride for their school they might show up to learn something instead of just sleeping of skipping class. At least maybe I would.

I think my school needs cleaning up, its dirty around here!People shall keep our environment clean and that leads to other people giving good comments, because we keep our things neatly and clean. Then I think we shall do more activities than we usually do ,like a preprally every home game this year on our first home game we didnt have one ,I think its because we have a new principal and he just not all the way together yet

I think a way to fix school would be to try many ways to get everyone in the school as a whole involved. Keep everyone involved with the school raising the schools spirit. If everyone is involved with something that excites them about school it will not allow them to lose the interest on school making them focus on other outside activites losing interest in school. It also allows them to make more friends within school making it more enjoyable and friendly.

I think one thing we could do to improve this school is to have all the teachers what they are specified to to teach and the teachers that dont know how to teach their subject.... simply not teaching it.

    August 31, 2010 at 11:13 am |
  51. Adam

The right thing to do would be to help with the teachers and students. I hate it when teachers try to make assignments more complicated than they need to be. And the teachers were real strict not to long ago on the dress code . Then the next week they would not be. It really gets on my last god loving nerves.I attend school at hilllsboro high school . The block schedule at my school is outrageous because each class is extended to 2hrs of learning. sometimes it can be a pain . Now this year they have added an extra class period.

    August 31, 2010 at 11:13 am |
  52. Canaan

The simple thing to do is to stop changing the rules or the school day every year. I am a junior and in 3 the three years i have been here the have changed the rules 3 times from ssa(standared school attire) , to the fact that we can be seen with out cell phones in the hallway to the fact that we dont have ssa anymore. They have changed the school schedule every year as well we have gone from 6 classes a day to 7 then now a b 8 class schedule. That one of the proplems that are in this school if they kept stuff the same for maybe one year we (the student staff etc) could keep up with what the addmenistration wants us to do. This year is our first a b block schedule and the teachers are havning a hard time keeping up with students they have that day and the students can't keep up with how the schedule has changed. Its not all the all the schools fault if punishment could be tighter then maybe all test scores would go up and schools wouldnt be so chotic. The students here well most of them don't have the drive and aren't ready for the real world or college and that how i think school should be run if a student is causing trouble they can be told to leave not asked and they don't have to come back but thats their fault if they don't amount to anything, teachers need help not someone that walks in with a clipboard and documents them on how the teachers class in run when no one is helpping its like putting a mouse in a room full of hungry cats its impossible so we all need help in diffrent ways and its up to the addminestration and the students not the staff in the school.

If i could fix my school, i would really change the uniforms because, i think we should wear what we want to wear!Like really, we can keep some of the dress code policies like sagging, wearing extra extra baggy clothes and things in that group.

The one change that could make the most difference in our education change would probably be the style of teaching. Most teachers have their own way of getting the idea from the textook to the students' mind, but never really acknolwedge the best way to express the subject. Different kids have different mindsets, some visual learners, while others like to experience firsthand. Thus, the goal would be for the teachers and students to have a better relationship, leading to a better teaching style and easier way for students to learn from their environment.

    Carl,

I feel like teachers need to be more receptive to students' need for help. Teachers who lead students to knowledge and can clear up questions we may have would be most effective.

i would like the cafeteria to offer Subway as a lunch option. School lunches are not brain energy efficient and lack taste. Subway has more variety, including vegetables & grains. Subway can be healthier which could help decrease our nations issue with obesity. Obesity ties into self esteem.

As an educator of 36 years - class size is the ONE thing that can make a difference. If I have the time to talk to each student individually at least once during an hour or class each day, they know I care.

Fix our school by having better lunches, more time between classes, less homework, Start later, more decorations, more color, open campus, dress code/uniforms, more electives, more sports teams.

We feel that the following things could improve and change the environment of our school:

    -New textbooks
    -More technology, hands on learning
    -Tutors
    -More study time
    -Bigger classroom/more space
    -More class options/more electives
    -More teachers
    -Media center
    -More school Supplies

These things would give us more opportunties to learn, go further, experience new things, understand concepts, express ourselves more freely, interact with others, and enjoy school. We agree that both the facility and the events that occur inside the classroom are important. We would like a balance of both. πŸ™‚

I think schools should allow more freedom to students. For instance, when a student has a study hall as a period and has completed their homework, the student should be privledged in leaving school property if needed. However, if the student does not return on time there should be consequences.

I think a way t ofix my school would be to fix internet set up to comcast cause its fatser access to get research done for school. Stop all the rodaints from spoiling people appatiates. Make bathrooms cleaner so students and other visitors would want to use them. Also, make bathroom passes or at least have a 10 minute bathroom break for students so we want have to hold it so long for 90 minutes. Let all responsiable students go of campus not just senoirs because the cafeteria food sometimes can be nasty. Then you have students that don't like to eat the food so they are hungry ALL DAY LONG!!!

    August 31, 2010 at 12:27 pm |

One change that would make a huge impact on schools would be not hiring coaches as teachers. If a coach is a teacher they usually do not care about there students unless they are athletes. And a lot of the time they are more worried about sports then they are academics.

    August 31, 2010 at 12:29 pm |
  76. Henry

I think that my school is pretty decent. The bathrooms are terrible ,lemme tell you about dem cockaroaches, they are bad! So anyways there are a lot of people at my school dont care about learning and its sad. We should and fix the school and the way people think about school.

    August 31, 2010 at 12:29 pm |
  77. MIranda

My school should take away uniforms because some people say that we cant afford it, but if you cant find nice clothes that are cheat how are you going to find nice uniforms. Now people stick even more out because if you don't have the right color or the "right" brand. People notice more. Al least if everyone is wearing different stuff, you stick more out.

    August 31, 2010 at 12:29 pm |
  78. Melissa

Personally i think it would be the teachers. The building itself does matter, but there are more important things then the look of the school. Such as the teacher reacting and being more hands on with the students.

    August 31, 2010 at 12:29 pm |
  79. raven

i think something that would change my school is i think the teachers should have funner lesson plans so the students would want to pay attention instead of doze off. I also think that my school should get ride of the uniforms that we have because i think its he most annoying thing in the world we still have to pick out clothes and nothing has change the way the students act towards each other so i think its pointless.

    August 31, 2010 at 12:30 pm |
  80. Kyle

One change I would make is that the teachers would listen to the students more. I think that teacher are just teaching by the book and not hearing what kids have to say. I think that teachers should worry about what is happening in our school then whats happening in other school. Teachers need to make the kids want to learn more.

    August 31, 2010 at 12:30 pm |
  81. james

I dont want any change in my education because i thin that in our school we have it very fair. We have a dress code but they are not as strict as some other school in the area. We also have a lot of choices to what classes we want to take. the building dose not matter its whats inside it.

    August 31, 2010 at 12:30 pm |
  82. Tiffany

One change that will make the most difference in school would be to get more hands on teachers that make learning fun and not boring. I also think having more school spirit making it more funner. Teachers should also help out more in after school activities.

    August 31, 2010 at 12:31 pm |
  83. james

I think we should be able to wear whatever we want for school. I think uniforms make people feel uncomfortable. And they shouldn't punish others because of certain people who get in trouble in your school

    August 31, 2010 at 12:33 pm |
  84. Larry

My school is not the best school; I mean we have good parts and bad parts, but it's not as bad as Stratford. We tried uniforms and it didnt work at all, infact it made it worse. The real problem is the amount of students who dont give a crap about school. To them school is a babysitting service. They want to put in their time and leave. I dont blame them. If a student doesnt want to learn, let them leave; don't pick them up for truency. If the school gets rid of the ones who don't want to learn, then the school is left with the students who want to learn, and that is how you fix the current school system. BOOYA

As a student that has attended both private and public schools, I know that most public schools will never be as good (some public schools are actually very similar to private schools). It's the ugly truth, but truth nonetheless. However, I believe that if public schools were to try and imitate private schools in every way possible with their minmal budget (which I know has been successfully done), the schools will become better in every way. Obvious, I know, but I think that many public schools fail to reach expectations, but they can come much closer to success if both students and faculty would just open their eyes.

Here are some comments made by my class:

teachers should be harder and should push us more.
    more hands-on activities
building improvements would create a more comfortable learning environment.
    students shold be more involved
    expand library.
    more extra-curricular activities
    stay with each teacher longer
    more technology
    more resources

SMART lunch is what helps our school, sometimes our family or friends can't help us with our work if we get stuck on something so why not get the help you need while at school without taking up the teachers time after class?

I think that my school should have more room for students or another hallway. The hallway are way to crowded for students to be passing through there is a lot of pushing and shoving so people aren't late all the time.

Good leadership. Need someone at the top with a vision for excellence. Maximize all hours of the day...no showing Disney movies. Trust the students to provide imput as to what they like and help to incorporate a portion of it into their education. If they have a vested interest, they are more likely to learn. Partner with local business to see that the curriculum helps to meet the needs of the community.

A change that I would make is the activity busses. We had activity busses and they took them away. If we have after school sports and clubs and there isn't a way for a student to get home then the busses come into roll. I don't think that it is fair that we had them and then they got taken away.

I think that one change that should be made to have a better education is that classes should be fun. I do not think that the classes should be crazy fun that you do not learn though. Give some students free time to talk with their peers about their day. If you play games in class more people get involved.

I wouldn't just change one thing about my school. I would like to change two things. I think if we got the activity buses back more students would participate in the sports that our school has to offer. Also, I would like for our school to have more activities for the students. If they have more things for us to do then maybe we will actually enjoy coming to school instead of complaining mostly everyday on how much we dislike being here.

    August 31, 2010 at 1:14 pm |

our budget was cut and now we don't have after school buses. so if you want to stay after school you have to get a ride home. i think they should bring them back because if you need to stay after school for extra help or sports you need a ride. if you cant get a ride or if you live far away then your out of luck. also making the school more enjoyable for kids.

A change that i think should be made to benefit my school to better my education would be to push students harder. Our education level has gone down so much and compared to other countries what we are learning here for say in tenth grade in another country like lets say Europe would be learning it in probably around 6th grade. We need to push our students harder and stop dumbing down the education system.

The school should have more options of classes to take, shorter periods, and better teachers.

One thing that i would change about my school would be to start earlier and get out earlier. I feel like we go to school for such a long time during the day that if we start earlier we it might feel like its a shorter day. Right now my school starts at eight o'clock. I believe we should start at seven thirty and get out at two instead of three thirty I feel it would be better for my school to do that so we can gt out for sports and things earlier!

For our school, we need to stop wasting money. We need to start using that money to make the school a better place. By that, I mean: stop the bullies, stop the cheating, and start things. We can start new clubs, sports, and a lot more.

One change i think our school should do as allow us to have bottled water or gatorade because nutritionist say that your mind does not think as well when it is dehydrated. I also think that our school should do a gym classes all year instead of one semester. They should also do gym as some of your first classes so you can get your body awake and running.

    August 31, 2010 at 1:17 pm |
  106. Eric

i think that my school should let us wear our own clothes. With uniforms no one can show who they really are and i think a students attire is a part of their personality. Being a student myself i know that most students are frustrated and it is just another thing which will disrupt the learning process. Why would you make the students even more angry about going to school?

    August 31, 2010 at 1:17 pm |
  107. Rebecca

The one change that I think would make the most difference in my education would be to get new text books. In some classes our text books are falling apart and if the books are that old, then information in them probably will not be accurate. You could have the best teacher in the world but if there are no tools, then you will have an extremely hard time learning.

    August 31, 2010 at 1:17 pm |
  108. Emily

One change I think should be done to make my school better is bock scheduling, this would help us to focus on less subjects in one day instead of eight. I think it would help decrease the amount of kids who fail every year, considering homework is a very big part of our grade. If we only had four subjects worth of homework instead of eight then maybe kids would do the work and pass.

    August 31, 2010 at 1:17 pm |
  109. Nicole

I do not think anything should be changed about my school. I love the sports and activities we have and everyone gets along real good. The teachers here support and helps us. Our school is small so everyone knows each other.

    August 31, 2010 at 1:17 pm |
  110. Danny

I dont think anything could be changed about my education beacuse we already have uniforms and a strict dress code. we already have a strict no tolerence policy which is even the littlest things could get you in school suspension. The only thing that could fix my school is getting more money so we could have more incentive days and so we could have more extracurricular activites

    August 31, 2010 at 1:18 pm |
  111. Christine

One thing I would change about my school is to have after school buses for after school activities. Our teachers encourage us to participate in school sports and clubs but most of the students do not have any transportation from school to home. Parents have to drive all the way to school just to pick up the child when we could just have a bus to drive us to our regular bus stops. That just wastes gas and time for the parents to do so. We had after school buses last year, but because of the budget problem, they cut it off. They even had the buses to take the fans to the football and basketball games. Hopefully next year we'll be able to have buses for our after school activities.

If i would fix one thing about my school, i would make our learning experience a little more different. I would have more review games. When we hear "games" it sounds like having fun. I enjoy playing review games, because I can get involved and know what we're talking about. It's hard for me, and other students to learn by listening to the teacher talking the whole class. I know for a fact that review games have helped me in the past. Review games should be a big feature to our school.

    August 31, 2010 at 1:19 pm |
  113. Delaney

One thing I would change about my school is bringing back the activity bus. If our school brought back the activity bus there would be more student that could stay for after school learning programs, such as bio lab or maths labs. It would also allow more students to stay active by being able to join sports or club. I understand that the school had to take the bus away due to budget reasons, but maybe if the school charges students a small fee it would be possible.

    August 31, 2010 at 1:19 pm |
  114. Emily

A change that would make a education in my school for the better is block scheduling. I would rather have 4 classes a day than 8. I think this would benefit my education because I would have more time to understand a subject, and not cram 8 different subjects in one day. This would help me process information better and I would be able to focus more on what we were learning in that class. I think this would help students get better grades.

    August 31, 2010 at 1:19 pm |
  115. Chelsea

One thing i would change about my school is the uniforms. I personally think that we shouldn't have uniforms because there a waste of time. The administration thinks that if we have uniforms then there wont be any bulling or anything. I think that uniforms wont matter there are a lot of other reasons why people get bullied. People also say that it is easier for the parents to get uniforms but i do not think that is true.

    August 31, 2010 at 1:19 pm |
  116. Katie

i dont think my school should have uniforms. I think we should be able to wear what we want to school. I also think we should be allowed to go to our locker between classes. Some students have to carry a ton of books and its hard to do that. I think that we should still have the activity bus because not all of the people who stay after school for sports or other activities can get a ride home.

    August 31, 2010 at 1:19 pm |
  117. Ashley

If I could change anything about my school it would be that we would be aloud to carry purses and handbags again. Since they changed this school rule some things have been a lot harder to accomplish. Also our books are really heavy and can sometimes make us late for class if your struggling carry them. It would just make things a lot easier.

    August 31, 2010 at 1:20 pm |
  118. Ryan

I think one thing that would make our schools education better is to have time to go to our lockers in between classes. Because then we get confused of what books to use and then everything gets disorganized.

    August 31, 2010 at 1:20 pm |
  119. Dustin

i think that our school should change its lunch. With kids not full or at a loss of appetite its hard to focus on the school work.

    August 31, 2010 at 1:21 pm |
  120. Olivia

One difference i would make would be to have more fundraisers, clubs and activities. Our school has cut busing, so if the students need to stay after because they need help on something they do not have a ride home. Because of the busing, there will not be a fan bus for the games, therefore no fans to help support our team. We keep getting new technology like computers or smartboards, but whatever happened to simply opening a book or teaching writing on the board? I think the school should use their money more wisely. The fact that yearbooks are so expensive, makes no one want to buy them. One thing i do think the school made a good choice on is uniforms. At first i was not too happy about uniforms but it seems that it has changed our school in many ways. I feel that the students are more mature and act better in a classroom. I just think the school should spend their money more wisely. They say cutting the after school busing is being "green" but it actually causes more pollution because more cars are driving from place to place.

    August 31, 2010 at 1:21 pm |
  121. Ryan

I think that my school should have kept the activity buses for after school, because not everyone would be able to get a ride home especially the kids that live up on the mountain. Another thing is tat the school should not have uniforms.

    August 31, 2010 at 1:21 pm |
  122. Avery

I think one thing my school could do is not get rid of some of its elective classes. My school is getting rid of tech classes that students like and teach them something they can use when they get older.

I would change the school by not wear uniform becuase kids get annoyed by wearing it. I would not let the teacher yell or get mad at the kids.I would let the kids tex and use their phones in class. school won't start till 12:00 and ends at 3:30.That's what I would change about the school.

I will change the people in the school because they dont take education serious. thats where are teachers dont take the rest of us serious.Thas where they make the kids think everythings is fun and games.

I would change the color and style of our uniforms and let people express themselfs, And also change the school hours. They will get to have a change in the uniforms. I will let them use the clothes that makes them feel good so they can do their work. Schools need more fundings and that should be the next step in making America a better country should be. With the funding we will receive, we can buy new books and tools that would making learning fun and easy. With all the new things we have now a days that should not be a problem.

We think that schools should include more time/space for interaction with our fellow classmates. Also schools should try to produce a more safer environment.. more teachers stepping out of their comfrost zones to make a better realtionship with students so a higher respect level can be had and then teachers can enforce their athourity when bad things happen in the classroom, hallway, courtyard and even on the playing field.

Our school is smaller so we don't really need to have more one-on-one time but I wish we all had a manditory study hall so we can get our homework done since most of the students in our school are athletes. I also think our math department could use some updating, I really enjoy math but due to the fact that we don't have a good math program I am not taking a math class this year. We also should distribute our money more equally between all subjects. We have not gotten any new band equipment in about 5 years but our other classes recieved smartboards last year.

We believe that we need air conditioning in our classrooms. Because at times, even in North Dakota, the temperature is extremely high in our classrooms. Being in a more comfortable room settting would help us focus. Even though some of the class believes that bigger classrooms would help us more, the majority of the class agrees that air conditioning would help our classroom more.

At my school we have no budget for teachers, old textbooks, and our school is only a few years old. But what is really odd, is that the elementary school right next to us is get a Promethean board for every class! That doesn't seem right to me. Am I getting striped of a education, because I want to go to a good college.

My opinion on changing my school is that i think ever kid should be able to have their own laptop. Doing this all the students will have all their work saved in the computer and wont lose any of their notes. I think this will increase the students grades because everyone will have the chance to goon their laptop and look up the answer of the question instead of waiting to go to a different room and looking it up their it will make up some room for students to get more work done and get better grades.

I think that my school needs to change the uniforms, homework, and songs rule. The uniforms is a big problem, because we can't show our personialty to others. The homework is sometimes a problem, because some teachers will give us hours of homework. The song rule is a huge problem, because school would a lot of fun. Why does our school do that? Because they want us to look nice all the time, and be smart!

I think my school needs to buget it's money and fairly distrbute it to the different things going on at our school. Especally to make learning more hands on. I have great teachers this year because they try so hard to do so, but they don't have the money to. For example- I just lately had to pay in advance for the big science expiraments this year- an it was required that I pay the money, for not only would I get a zero for not bringing in the money, but I wouldn't be allowed to participate in the expiraments either! I'm in multible clubs- all of which are teacher run and recieved no money from the school. They dropped spanish as a course at our school. A course that is required for our highschool deploma. The ball teams were given much of our school's budget money last year and all other extra curriculars were given the excuse that we "don't have enough money to do that" multiple times. Our school needs a budget! Or at least a much better one. And that's only one of the millions of improvements we need to make!

I think what would make a big diffrence in our school as weel as education opportunitys are the food avaible for lunch, in our school we have alot of chips, icecream, and energy drinks which can affect how students in our school learn, expecially the things Carl says!

I think that we could have a better one on one time with the teachers. It's fairly good as it is but it could be better in some classes like your core subjects. I think that we could as have a lot better class choices offered. When some classes aren't taken by a lot of students, you could replace them with a class that more students would take and some that could teach you more of the basics for certain aspects in life.

Recycling andboxtops are good for getting some extra money. And to help the budgits in school: get less items like pencils, pens, small things, because students can get those themselves. School dances can help pay some school bills, but if the school keeps buying textbooks (not saying that text books are bad but they are expensive. Teachers can teach those things instead of pulling up a large book. Besides, we have the internet and smart teachers that can eteach instead of looking at a book that might be OLD!) and/or if the school keeps buying expensive food it will waste. Did you know some large school water fountains ARN'T used? Cameras should see which ones to get rid of cause water is expensive as well!

My school's food is provided by the government, well most of it. All of the students complain it it is gross, we can hardly stand to eat it. If we had a better variety of food and different food once in a while, we might complain a lot less.

Having all the kids who don't care about their studies moved to a different location. Whenever a student gets in trouble, make a bad grade, or harrasses the teachers or other pupils, it affects my work and study time, and that time taken away could make a complete difference to kid's grades.

I think our school could get better lunches. If more people like the lunches, our school would be getting more money from all the students who go their. And if we get more money then we'll be able to get more school supplies like soccer balls, lab equipment, better books, etc.

I think students learn more in a relaxing, comfortable learning enviornment. I'm not talking an indoor spa relaxing or anything. I believe teachers should be calm to their students, while watching closely to the pupils, themselves. The teachers shouldn't let everything slide, like no gum rules or not focusing in class.
I also think that the supplies is important, like the desks and chairs. Nobody wants a slip-'n'-slide chair. A slightly cushioned chair would be good. They are not very expensive & create a comfortable work session. Desks should be durable & hard, without overwhelming someone. A non-expensive, durable desk helps a kid focus on the work & not that one leg that makes the table wobble.
I am well aware of the economy limits, right now. That is why I recommend non-expensive supplies that get the job done, while still creating a comfortable learning enviornment to both students & teachers.

I think to fix our schools we should transfer government given fundings from unnecessary supplies into more important tools for learning purposes. Like instead of paying to have ice cream and junk at lunch we should put that money into academics like the science or math department for tools and textbooks. In doing so we eliminate unhealthy food and get the tools we need for a better learning experience.

I think that we can help our school by not littering. I also think that the economy has a part in this because we dont have enough teacher or classes and that means less students are not aloud to go to a sertain school. I think that if we do our part in fixxing our school that the teachers will do more than just help they will do everyting they can and wont stop til we fix the school

In IL, a local church does a Sharefest every summer to transform 2 schools. We painted and cleaned 2 schools and the students were overwhelmed with the transformation and how beautiful their "new" schools looked when they returned. So I think appearance on top of more qualified teachers and a richer learning environment are all crucial to fixing our education system.

If I could change anything in my school it'ld probobly be the uniforms and dress codes. It doesn't let the students express themselves, but I would still keep the policy that you can't wear anything inappropriate since were in school and don't need to see that kind of stuff. Other than that I would change the halls themselves since there really old and almost broken.

I think that if there is any way to help our education at my school, then it would be stricter teachers. Our teachers aren't very tough and so that makes it pretty easy to pass their class. This is NOT good for us for when we start heading off to college.

    August 31, 2010 at 7:40 pm |
  208. Morgan

I think that if schools have the necessary components such as textbooks, supplies, experienced teachers, and a decent facility, then there isn't much that you need to change. It depends more on the students, and whether or not they try hard to succeed. Even if there is advanced techonology and expensive supplies, what's the use if the students won't make the most out of it?

I think that we need more education, becuase we have the future ahead of us... I also think that we should have have alittle more clubs like cheer, baseball, softball, ect. I would not change a thing from my school. This is because my school has fair rules, good lunches, plenty of supplies, and most importantly nice good teachers that have realistic goals for us. If a school does not have this it's a poor school. πŸ™‚

At our school, I think that we need more of :

    -Computers
-Teachers from a over populated team/class
    -Bigger Classrooms

These things have less of in our shcool. Many schools have these things. I think at least that when the school runs a fundraiser that all the students at least raise some money for the school to help.

    August 31, 2010 at 8:20 pm |

If I could change some things about my school I would have all the students wear the same dress code because some children are always worrying about their clothes and how they look, instead of focusing on school. Also, if the school were to pick uniforms they should let the children have the privilege of voting so that they would like the uniform they would be wearing.
Another reason is the amount of time in each class. The classes I take have 45 miutes in each. I wish we could have more time in classes to get into the subject more and to have more hands-on things planned for each class because doing everything right out of thr book bores children. And this is what I would change about my school.

I would say the teachers matter the most. If I didn't have a good teacher I'd be a mess, I can NOT learn just by reading a textbook. Hands-on activities really help. Parts of the school building itself matter, such as libraries and computer labs. It's nice to have technology while learning, but teachers also play a big part.

The reason are schools need fixing is, because they have low funds. That is because the schools must have requirmets, but they do not recieve the funds to cover the cost. This all leads to the bad economy these days. Now, because the school has to pay for their own requirments they have less money for privleges, supplies, etc. The thing is as long as their are teachers and students we will be alright. Thanks for reading this.

To fix my school i would suggest having fun and hands on acticities.
Instead of book work we should do team work problems and do things as a class. This will tune in nthe students. Also a friendly staff and good enviroment.

The one thing that I would change in my school would be.....

the dress code because I think that if it is a hot day we should be able to wear spagetti strap t shirts but then I also agree if it is a cold day than it would not be appropriate to wear and if its to low cut than that would be wrong to wear to school.

I believe that every school should have good teachers that are willing to help the students and make sure each student understands what they are teaching. As well about school spirit, that's a good thing because if your school lacks in school spirit then your school is gonna be down and not be as pumped up or very happy.

Many kids don't take school seriously. Honestly, I believe in order to stay focused its good to have students who care about school. Its also important to have good teachers, principals, and councilors to support you. Having school spirit is a big thing too. Whats a school without any spirit? Getting involved is important too because everyone wants to feel like they fit in somewhere. I believe that fitting in has a big influence on how kids do in school. Whether your school has enough money to buy new books or not, its your choice to make the grade! You don't need a new social studies book just to get a good grade, its how much effort you put in to know the material. MAKE SCHOOL YOUR FIRST PRIORITY!

I think that our school is pretty advanced in some of the classes it offers, but when I hear other kids say that they are taking classes for double credit I think that would be a great opportunity if our school would offer some of those classes. Even if it was only like one or two classes to start with to see how much interest there is, then maybe in the next couple of years eventually get four or five.

My school has slot of hands-on administrators and teachers. But I think my school should have more fun activities, organizations and stuff. My school should be more comfortable for me to come. Oh and my school needs to be more supportive of all sports and organizations. We really need a spirit check. We barely have any. We still need to encourage our team if they are losing. Team attitude is important.

I think that us students should use computers to complete homework assignments rather than using text books and work sheets. The teachers would be able to get the information instantly, and students wouldn't have to remember to bring in homework assignments. All we have to do is hit the "SEND" button. It will be healthier for students because we will not be carrying heavy books on our back and we aren't using a ton of paper all the time.

i think the discipline of the teachers should go up instead of the principle taking care of everything. If the teachers take care of it, the kid can stay in class and learn more. another thing is having more dances. If we have more dances it will give kids a more enjoyable time at the therefore no trouble making on a daily basis. and having dances at $5 to get in and there are at least 500 students who want to go that's $2,500. That's how school can get more money

I think that we could change my school by adding more classes. We really don't offer a big variety, Spanish is the only language we have that counts for a credit. I think that if our school added more choices, like more arts, maths, sciences, and literature classes, people would enjoy it more. In addition to those classes, the students would actually be excited to come to class, to learn something they actually want to learn, and take a 90-minute break from Algebra and English.

They could also imporve and spend more time to make better lunches and more kids would eat there and eat everything on their trays so were not wasting money on food people dont eat. for my school i would fix the types of classes offered, the classes offered are for more of the kids interested in taking an easy class to keep from having hard work to do which seems like a waste to me, i want more classes for a variety of careers. Another thing i would fix is the quality of the food at my school, not very many people like to eat at the school because simplely, it's not very good food. if the food was better, i would eat at school a lot more often

i believe one important thing to get in our school would be air conditioning. our school is getting out because of heat days causing our classes to be shorter. this cause stress on both the teachers and students to get everything in at school. by having it cooler students will be able to focus more

If i could change somethings about my school it will be to change the lunch because we have the same things like every day.I will also change the time we have for our extra classes. Also our time we have to spend in lunch time because i think that the time is to short.

If I could change one thing about my school, I think that more technology classes. The students at my school enjoy using the computers and some students never get the chance to. When some of my friends that are in an ITECH class, find out that the system is down, they are so disheartened. New, separate servers for each school would help greatly as well, so that we wouldn't be bogged down for precious minutes if we are on a timed assignment.

I think our school should have more fun like pre-teens love to have fun from people. At our school there is no fun what so ever. More Pep-Rally
when theirs fun like on the first day of school at least do something. For us to be energize instead of bored all the way to school ends. It makes no sense to me not to do this.

I think the thing that we should change about our school is having better and sometimes healthier lunches. Lunches that taste good but that have lower carbs because that fatty foods are the reasons why people don't want to run and jog in gym. i just dont like all the greasy foods that people
    serve.

If we could change a couple things in our school , I would change the part when we have to wear basketball shorts and t-shirts for volleyball . I always feel that we should also have a different variety of our choice of food at luch time. I think that our school should also have more attractions that keep us more interested in learning and achieving our goals !

We need longer lunches, different food everyday because all we have is: nachos, pizza, salad, chicken sandwich, burgers, and burritos, and different drinks :). We need a bus for after-school activities, but other than that we have a pretty good school. πŸ™‚

For lunch they shouldn't have milk all the time. My school sells gatorade and juices, but the there should be jucies in stead of milk. Some poeple are allergic to or are lactose and tolerant.

I think that we shouldn't have uniforms because then we can't show our personality and be ourselves. With the uniforms we all look the same and everyone is different so we should have the chance to show who we really are. But like also I used to have a block schedule and it was like way better because we had more time to learn about only four subjects at time, we didn't have to focus on soooo much in one day! and we had less homework(: and like the students that aren't trying to learn should just leave cause like honestly they only want to start trouble not learn?! so it's likee totally pointless for them to be here.

If our school was to start at a later time like maybe 8:00 and not any earlier then maybe more kids would come to school because they would be so dead in class. Also if they would not make a kid who missed 20 days out of the school year and fails because he/she was too sick or maybe even depressed to come into school. If the students feel like it is their chose to come to school more will want to come because its up to them and not other people who have no idea what that students life can be like.

if i could change one thing about my school is that when people stay after school not all of there parents can come and get them . this is why i think our school should have activity buses . another thing is the uniforms i don't like that we cant wear jeans and a t-shirt or sweat pants .

I think that we shouldn't get homework every day because its rough when you have to do homework in every class plus having to study on top of it. Also alot of our teachers should not be so strict. Yes it teaches us about college and stuff but not all the time cause it gets the students annoyed and takes our minds off learning

I think what could make my school better is smaller class. If you have class of 30 or more students you don't get as much help. I would like to have a better schedule like a block classes. Periods are fine but you don't get a lot of time.

If i could change anything about my school, i would change how we learn. I seen how in this one school the students were able to use a cell phone during class to learn. I wish in my school we learned everything on a cell phone and have the school supply us laptops to use during class.Another thing i would change is the uniform policy i don't like the policy that we have to follow. The dress code stinks!!

If i could Change my school i would change the uniforms to me they are a waste of time and pointless why would you go out and buy clothes that you wouldn't wear when we can be our self and wear the clothes we have some people might not have the money to buy the new uniforms. And also some kid's have similar clothes to the dress code but its always a problem it's not the right colors and we get in trouble for it.

If there was one thing my school could change, it would be the Activity bus. Activity buses are for activities after school, as far as Tutoring, Sports things like that. I don't like that they took that away because if you want your students to be successful, and they need more time after school, there should be transportation provided. I understand were going through an economic crisis but they should try to make every way possible to fix that, instead of going out and buying school uniforms and Gym clothes, so it could have there LOGO, thy should be trying to help students pass class by staying after school.

    September 1, 2010 at 8:31 am |

I think our school needs to have fewer classes and make them longer so we can learn more in all of our classes. Instead of having gym S1 or S2 we should have it all year long so more people can be physical fit and have a healthier choice in lunch.

I personally think my school doesn't need to be fixed. My school is a very nice friendly school, the teachers push you to get things done, and most of our students are in sports, and my school also gives a fun working place so we can get done what we need to get done. So once again I wouldn't fix a thing in my school.

If i could change something in my school i would change that we wouldn't have to wear uniforms everyday. I think wearing uniforms everyday is bad because some people don't like wearing the same clothes every week. Also i would change the amount of time we get between classes to 5 minutes. I think that would be better because a lot of our classes are far away from each other.

If there was one thing I could change one thing about my school, It would be to add some fun to our learning environment. If I could change one thing about my school I would change some of the teachers. Some of the teachers in my school are not really good. I think we should have a bigger cafeteria, because the lunch lines are waaaaaaayyyy too long, and it makes people want to bring a lunch instead of buying from the school. So the school is losing money. Therefor, we are losing out on educational resources because the school doesn't have enough money to buy them for us.

Our school is the worst school in American History. There are alot of things that need improvement but nobody even bother to improve . For example, we have these old, outdated, nasty, dirty textbooks from 1978, that teach us absolutely nothing. T. Another example, the lockers, the budgets,(yes, i know everybody has a budget, BUT we have the cheapest budget in the entire district.) If i were the principal i would increase the budget, and do a full renovation of the school. I would make learning more creative by hiring, young fresh, and funny teachers who do not bore me to death. I would also fire all the lunch ladies, in the cafeteria. I would burn all that meat, (well, they SAY its meat, but i know different) and replace it with fresh, young, tasty food thats healthy..

I think a way we could fix my school is to not treat certain students differently because of what class they are capable of taking. Yes, some students are in honor classes and are taking high school courses, however that does not mean you should label them as better than others or put the expectations on them as a person higher than any other students. Honor classes are the level of learning a student is on not the label of how a person should be, and how they are supposed to act. It is not fair to students who take lower level classes. Also the teachers could relate to the students more in their lessons as much as possible. It could us understand better, make us pay attention, and have an interest in the topic or the class. These things could make students more confident and more comfortable in their learning.

Summit Parkway Middle School is a decent school, It is average just like every school in our District. Learning could be better if it was fun, and enjoyable. I think our school should offer more college credit courses. College is expensive and I think by offering these courses it would not only decrease our college costs, but it would teach us to try harder in high school so that we can pass these courses.

I think homework is something to get rid of... being home is the time to relax and unwind, not do more school work.

Also most kids are forced to stay up late at night and do school work and they have to wake up early, so they are tired and cranky at school.

Last is, they have other things to do outside of school, like soccer, or football, and other things that keep you late after school.

I would have to say that my school is fairly good as it is. I believe we could have a few better teachers in certain areas, but for the most part we have great teachers who are dedicated to there job. I believe we could also have a little more school spirit because not everybody gets involved in very much. It would also be nice to have more activities or organizations so there would be more choices for the kids who don't like to do very many sports. Overall my school is good, but there is always ways for improvement in every school.

  306. Treysean

I would change the dress code because it is a waste of time and money parents spend money on the uniforms and they will only be worn inside of school. I would also change the fact that we no longer have after school transportation for activities so our school will be a lot less involved.

If I could change one thing about my school it would be the way the teachers teach. I'm more of a hands on learning kind of kid. I would like the teachers to be more interactive when they are teaching. I learn better when the teachers play games and let us use the smart boards. That's what i would change in my school.

    September 1, 2010 at 9:58 am |
  308. Shayne

To fix our schools i think we have to fix the way that our teachers teach us. I think we should have a lot more fun things to do instead of taking notes then taking a test. More things that are more hands on than just writing. I think that even doing most of the work on the computer would be better than writing it. It gives kids a different and overall better experience. Plus a majority of our students will probably grow up and have to use a computer at some point for their jobs.

One change I would make in my school, is the excitement. Our school should have more school spirit and more activities for students. I think one thing that would make our education better in this school is that we should be allowed to wear what we want. Honestly, last year I got closer to people through clothes. Also, I learned better too. I Feel uncomfortable in these clothes. If I am wearing something I'm comfortable in, I learn better.

If i could change one thing about my school it would be the activity buses. If its that important for us to be in sports and clubs, then there should be buses, especially for the kids that live the farthest from school. I think that is the reason why a lot of kids aren't in clubs or after school stuff.

    September 1, 2010 at 9:59 am |
  313. mack

I think that our school should make classes more enjoyable and fun, so they can catch the students attention more easily. It would also make the day a whole lot better for students who are having a bad day. I also think that the lunch room should always have more than enough food for all the students in the school. The students in the last period lunch do not always get what they want because the lunches before them ate all the food.

    September 1, 2010 at 9:59 am |
  314. Sara

One thing I think our school should change is that we don't have an activity bus. It's really hard for me to find a ride before five and all the activities end at 4:15. Even if they charge a few dollars it would be better. Also I think they should upgrade their food. The high school's food isn't that bad, but the other schools' food is terrible.

  315. Dania

The way i would want my school (ACC) to be fixed by changing the uniforms. No students like to wear the uniforms. It would be better if they just let us wear whatever we want. Its also another way to express our selves and students should be able to do that.

    September 1, 2010 at 10:02 am |
  316. Caitlin

I think my school should change the uniforms. We should be able to wear different colored polos instead of school colors. I also think we should have buses for after school activities. Some of the students parents may be working, and don't have time to pick their kid up, so we can have the buses take them to their bus stops. If parents can't pick them up then that's less kids learning, and doing sports.

  317. Bridget

The teachers shouldn't be worried about all the little rules. They shouldn't waste time on that. They should be focusing on educating. The student will get more out of the lesson if they are more focused on it rather than another student getting yelled at.

  318. Franco

If I could I would change the way the schools classes are. I would have the teachers be more fun because a fun teacher makes a class more fun. I would also change the way that we have no free time. Free time would be nice every once and a while. Also maybe change the way that kids are getting punished for their wrongs. I mean by that if there is a fight than the person who starts the fight should be kicked out of school.

    September 1, 2010 at 10:03 am |
  319. Alicia

I think that if I could change one thing about my school would be that the teachers stop letting the students slide with things, such as, gum, talking back, and having a loud classroom. For some students, like myself, they have trouble working with so much noise. It also annoys me when students will talk back to teachers and have an attitude. I don't blame the teachers for hoe the students act, I just think the teachers should give them stricter punishment when they do. It might make them angrier but it might also, or should, make them learn that they should act or talk like that to their elders.

If I could change one thing about my school it would be to get newer books because most of them are falling apart and they have old information. I think we should have a better school lunch. More people should get involved with sports and activities. They should change the rule for the buses after school because people live far from the High School and do not have a ride home most of the time. I am glad for what we have and hope that some things could change.

    September 1, 2010 at 10:03 am |
  321. kyle

i think to fix are school is to get more money for trips and new things. If the school had more money they can run the buses and get new things for the school to have. We can also be able to go on field trips if the school budget would go up. Then more people would be happier that they can have trips and ride buses to after school activities. With a good budget the school would be better. The school can then get new books for our education so we can learn better.

If I could change one thing about my school I would get rid of some teachers. Its hard to learn and pass when some of the teachers sit on their computers all day and just give the class an assignment and don't explain it. If we had teachers that actually taught classes it would make it easier for kids to learn.

I will fix my school by changing the uniforms by using regular clothes.I want to change the uniforms because some students don't like to use uniforms in school and you will spend more money in uniforms than regular clothes.I will change my school hours by short time.To get out of school like at 1:00 p.m insted at 2:50 p.m.It would be graet if they changed those 2 rules in my school.

If i could change one thing in my school to make my education better it would have to be some of the teachers and how they teach there lessons. It could feel like class will drag on for hours sometimes because of the teacher boring us to death. Some teachers will make it fun and exciting by having a sense of humor, and playing educational games with the class. School like a lot of others said maters on the people in the school more than the school building.

I believe that a good education depends on the student's ability to persevere no matter how difficult a class is. I think that a way schools can be improved is by actually increase all class time by fifteen minutes. By increasing every class from forty five minutes to one full hour, this should give more time to work and review. In order to institute this idea, one class, such as study hall would be removed to make more class time. While some may disagree by saying that this would only make classes more difficult with less spare time to work on it, if the classes are longer, the students would get a better grasp of the work, which would make it easier to do, which would mean less time is needed to do it.

If I could change anything in my school it would probably have to be that our school can have more extra electives, and more activities after school for the students to choose from. I know that the school told us getting rid of the entire activity buses after school is a lot more greener and to save some money, but it is hard for a lot of students to find some rides to get to and from their activities. Another change that I would make would probably be to have more study time for different school subjects. I think with all the subjects that we take, makes it harder to study for all of the subjects so why can't we have more time to study or why can't we have more time in class to learn the subject. One more change I would make to fix our school is that we should spend the money that we have wisely! Some of the money needs to go to school supplies that we really need like new textbooks. The textbooks are more important to the school funding than having snacks and that at lunch or less computers might help with the funding of money.

If I could change anything about my school to make my education better it would be to have more electives to choose from. Electives are fun classes that you can choose based on what career path your taking or what you like to do. When I am older I would like to be a photographer and I want a class to help me become one. When I was choosing an elective, I couldn't find a class I felt would help me in the long run. Instead of taking away our electives the school should add more.

What i would do to make my school better is not have so much homework. Lots of kids do after school activities and do not always have enough time to do there homework. When the kids get home from whatever they are doing after school its already late at night, now they have to do there homework late and get to bed at a good time so they can start all over the next day. Another thing i would change is the teachers some of them talk like there are half dead, that makes a class half dead as well. If the teachers would be happy in the classes the students would have more fun in class.

The main thing that could change my education completely would be funding from the government. The budget crisis here in Pennsylvania that has risen with the economic problems in the country has caused major educational spending cuts. Those cuts have affected education in the state greatly with library databases and after school activities eliminated for example. If my generation could be better educated we would not make the same mistakes with our deficit, economy and budgets as the generation in power is now.

If i could fix my school i think i would fix the foof because somtimes it leaks in the auditorium. The second reason is air conditioning because in lots of rooms it gets hot. Then i would add some more games into the game room. My last reoson is that i would try to get better food in the schoo.

If i could change the school uniform so people dont need to wear the uniform anymore. So they can wear regular cloths. Alot of people dont like uniform more people wear regular cloths. They dont like uniform that why they put excusses. I would tell my teacher to change the uniform. That how i would change my school.

I think the best thing we could do is have more options for classes. It's hard for a smaller school like the one I go to but it would be nice to have more options. When we are looking for future jobs it would be better if we had classes that teach about that job. My school does a pretty good job at this but some of the classes designed for a certain subject can be pretty weak and you may not learn much.

I believe they should allow students to have more freedom. For instance if a student were to have a study hall and has finished all their work, they should be able to leave and run some errands if needed, and if the student didn't return there should be some serious consequences.

Our school could do with some more classes. Since my school is rather small the # of classes the school offers follows suit. Personally I would like more different math classes an IT classes.

i believe we should have more study halls. time to talk to teachers if we dont get what there talking about or what the subject is. I also think that our school should get lap tops for every student in the highschool that away we can do everything online. some other school are doing that and it helps the enviroment alot becouse we wouldn't use as much paper.

I think our school should pay more on the education and the arts instead football and other sports. I understand why schools value sports... they unify their peers and create a happy environment. But at the same time, the arts and basic education are in need for funding... our school can use new books inside the library, and the arts can use more money so we dont have to use the same costumes for the school play.

One thing that could help students would be eliminating unnecessary distractions. For example, in the morning I get hungry; however, we are not allowed to eat food in class. It is distracting. I find myself thinking about food instead of class. This could be solved by simply allowing students to have small snacks like cereal or crackers.

If i could change one thing to make my school better, i would have to say that i would like for it to have block scheduling. I think that if i had more time to spend on one specific subject, i wouldn't feel so over whelmed. With having only 4-5 classes a day, its less stressful than cramming in eight. The biggest reason my school would benefit from block scheduling is because with more time in one class, there is more opportunity to ask questions and get help. It gives more time to the teachers to teach lessons in more than one way, so that all students have an equal opportunity to learn the same material, just in a way that they can comprehend it.

I think that one things schools should change is the teachers having fun and changing up there lesson plans every one in awhile. If the teacher doesn't like to teach what they are teaching then the students normally don't like it either. No one likes to sit in a boring classroom for an hour and just sit there. If we were to have activites or hands-on things I would want to learn more. When teachers have fun the students do too. Another thing is being able to go on feild trips and go and see things that you are learning about. When you see things for yourseft it helps you understand a lot more.

I think our school should give money to the arts such as theater, speech, chorus and band. There are so many people in our school that are in these activities and deserve to have better. Last year we invested on new lights for the football field. A few years ago we made a new basketball court. We get so much money from booster clubs and none of it goes to MAST. I think we should invest on new music for band and chorus. We should make a legit backstage and remake our stage and have wings for the back part of the stage. We should just make our auditorium bigger and less crowded and make it look more like a theatrical auditorium. We should invest on new paints and art supplies. The majority of our students are in the arts. We work our butts off to make good performances and we dont get that much in the end. The arts deserve more than that they are getting now

A way I would fix the school is by figuring out what teachers can and can't teach. What I mean by that is that sometimes it's the teachers that aren't doing a good job at teaching instead of the students, who may or may not be working. Those teachers do not have a passion that most teachers have.

if i could change one thing about my school it would be the....
    -uniforms
    _more high technology
    -study halls for every students
    -free activity buses
    -free lunch
    -more trips for all grades.
    – i think that if any of these could change it would better our school.

one change that would effect my education a lot would be having teachers that cared more about the students and not being so strict. if my teacher wouldn't yell at me when i stand to blow my nose or sharpen my pencil i wouldn't have to be so miserable in school. also if my teachers would actually help me when i ask for and put what i am saying in their eyes and understand what i say in stead of them saying "read the directions like i just said, for the fourth time". also if my school that says they have no money would have a buses for after school activities i could stay for math lab, bio lab, or something in that area so i can have help with my weakest subjects.

I think my school should not have uniforms. I think that when we wake up and realize that we have to wear the same thing we wear everyday that we are not excited to come to school. I think one thing that would make school better is more feild

One thing I would change about this school is the fact that we don't have a bus for after school. If we don't have a bus for school how can we get tutored if we need the help. Some students are not lucky enough to have money for gas all the time. So the fact that we don't have bus for after school isn't going to benefit our education at all. Less students getting extra help equals more students failing and that isn't good.

If I would change anything in my school it would be school spirit, and black scheduling. We don't have a lot of pep rally's, and I think that we should because it gets us all hyped up to help our school succeed, and to play sports you have to have good grades so there for most of us would all have good grades. For the block scheduling I think it would be a lot easier on us because we can be more focused, and I think it would cut down on the homework because we wouldn't have so many classes in one day.

    September 1, 2010 at 11:39 am |
  355. Autumn

There's a lot of things I would like to change about my school, but if I had to choose only one, it would have to be the scheduling. I think that by switching to a block schedule, we would not only have more time to learn the material, but it would cut the stress of juggling eight classes a day in half.
I had a blocked math class last year, and I loved it. I always got my work done and at the end of the day, I had one less text book to lug home with me, which was a huge relief.
I feel that if every school cut the number of classes, and increased class time, drop-out rates would decrease, drastically.

i think if our school started at a later time it would make a big difference because kids would have time to eat breakfast and be fully awake in the morning. i also feel if would got to take note and and other things our person laptops and computers it would make class much more productive and i think students would be way more organized that way. i also think that we are getting to many text books to have to carry back and forth to class and back home and to school.

I think that my school should have after school activity buses like we did last year. Our parents waste gas coming to pick us up because some of live 30 minutes away from school. Also it would help our education by letting us students stay for after school tutoring with the teacher of the subject we need help with. The teachers want us to have a good education but how are we suppose to do that if we have no ride home like some of our parents work in the city and sometimes stay the night there so most of us do not have a ride home after school. The teachers also stress that we should join more extracurricular activities but with no bus too give us a ride home.

One thing i would change about the school i go to is a much more diverse quality/affect of students. I believe we should have this because the people in our school need to understand different cultures and why we are the way we are, honestly the people in our school don't take into consideration that we are all not the same and need to understand each other better especially when it comes to background. People in our school just assume because you are a certain color or come from a certain background that you come from. If we got the chance to sit down with each other and listen to one another we would see that we are all different. We all don't stand or reference our selfs to the stereo type that people put on us. Thats something I would change in our school is the stereo type that students just as well as teachers and staff put on each other.

what i would like to happen for my school is that i want to have an activity bus for after school activities. i also want to get rid of the school uniforms because it really doesn't make any sense wearing them. i also want TEACHERS that are willing to teach and help out students know matter how bad the student is at learning because that kind of gets me upset. and finally i want the lunch prices to go don because i some people can't afford the lunches then they can't eat and then they can't think correctly and the teachers get upset when they can't focus in class or there grades aren't up to potential.

I feel that my school time length needs to be shorter, 8 hours of school just stresses your brain to much. Coming in to school from 12:00 PM till 3:00 PM gives you time to wake up get your rest and in school work done, you need major subjects. Not electives, and gym, and all the other pointless classes. I do feel that we need about 4 hours for major subjects like Math, English, History, and maybe a language is fine. At an hour per class that's fine to learn everything u need. and still in this world kids still struggle with math and other subjects out of high school. Why? Maybe because school is just too long..

One thing that can make a change in the school is...
    1. Money, this will increase the activities and things we have in school.
    2. more high tech technology, technology is everything, I depend on technology greatly, everyday of my life.
    3. Study halls for everyone, I need time in the school day to get myself together, I have a lot to do and don't really have any spear time as it is.
    4. Gym everyday, I don't work out at home, and I am tired to work out or do that sort of stuff, so gym would be awesome to have everyday.
    5. After school buses,I would like to join some after school activity, but I am unable to since I would have o ride home, some buses would help. I would like these things to happen in my school...

I feel the one thing that would make my school better is having a little more support for the music and arts programs. I believe that music and art are a very important part of schools and should be more encouraged. In my school they have cut quite a few music classes that are very important to quite a few kids. so far they have cut Music theory 2, music history 2 and chorus. The worst part about that is that we also no longer have after school bussing, so there is no after school chorus either. needless to say the music and the art has begun to die. Music and art are such an important part of young peoples lives and its sad to see it getting taken away.

I think the school spends to much money trying to make the school look nice. They should spend money on more books and activity buses. some students like to stay after school for sports. some kids want to spent time after school because they need more help in classes.

If i could change one thing about my school it would be shorter classes so all the students can get all the information out of one class. This is my reason because we can get out early and we can study longer. Another think is that we should take back our activity buses so people can get extra help if they need it.

Changing one thing about my school would be the school dress code. I do not believe its right to have students looking the way someone else wants them to look because everyone is different in their own unique way. I would not want to walk into a building and see someone with the same outfit i have on. People should be able to express themselves and style themselves as they want to. When you bring out a dress code what do you really think you are doing for your school? The academic scores will still remain the same because what you wear does not make a person. It what that person shows people. What that particular person has to offer. When the school board requires students to wear a uniform i think of it as more of a personal problem for them, because many teachers do not like the way some students dress. But that should not concern anyone else but that individual. Basically the point I am trying to get across is the dress code is unnecessary. Therefore that is one thing that I would like to change about my school.

"Fix My School," If I had the chance to fix my school I would change some of the technology, and become more advanced in technology like some of the other schools in my district. I would also add new magnet programs to my school. I live in a small town in the state of Nebraska, so I know how it feels for a student to go without much needed supplies. I think that everything has a part to play in a student’s education, but I think the most important part is the environment. A great environment means that kids will want to learn and that they feel comfortable learning. Although, everything has a part for a great school!

I believe that, to fix our school(s), those in charge must first look at the needs of the students. Problems vary from student to student and every student has his or her own way of learning. Addressing these issues will be difficult, but it is necessary, the world over. Then, and only then, will the real problems come to an end.

I would have the teachers here use the board or overhead more often and be more visual. Because, I tend to understand stuff better when I can actually see it or visualize it rather than I just get talked at for a whole period. That's why I like Government, because the teacher writes/draws on the board and shows videos, both of which are visual.

One thing i would fix on my school would be longer classes, because most times we do not get to finish what we are doing because we either ran out of time or we didn't do the things fast, so most times classes are in a rush, and they do not get to do things that they wanted to do, or they had to do.

i think we have a problom at school because we have to wake up early in the morning some at 4,5, or 6. Ithink that students are not foccused enough in school because they are sleepy. Some students are sleeping in during there classes. I think that if we start school a little later but not to late, students would foucus more and be more awake instead of dropping there books on the hallways. Also The School Athletes would be more energized. and we would have a bit more higher grades.

I've been to several schools in the past, and I have not really gotten a chance to see much or do much about fixing my school but have many ideas! My main idea is to get more people involved with school activities such as more Science Fairs, and more counselors for the kids that really need time to talk and explain their problems. Our school recently went through some dramatic superficial changes, but it doesn't seem to have effected our actual schooling. I believe that in order for our school to be a better learning institution, changes in the efforts and enthusiam of the teachers is necessary. When the people responsible for your education do not take their job seriously, there is ultimately no legitimate reason to attend school.

I think that we could make our school a lot bettter by making things fair. So many teacher treat other student different from the kid that don't have a name in the school or town. I think that teacher that have kids should treat them the same as all the other kids in that class or school

Having students come to school with a positive attitude and ready to learn. Having the right work ethic and being open to new ideas are very important as well.

I think our school should have a healthier lunch choice. I think if they had more clubs they wouldn't have so many kids getting in trouble. I also think that we should also have smaller classes.

Schools are not just based on the students needs but also the teachers. If the students dont give respect to any of the teachers then the teachers will not feel like they are welcome to teach so to speak that the student gains no knowledge whatsoever.I believe that its the students attitude that determines their aptitude.I hope this helps Mr.Azuz!

I believe that teachers should be fun and exciting, but keep us on task at the same time without screaming. My teachers all get too easily aggravated and yell at us for talking. They were once kids and they SHOULD know that weather or not it is the right thing to do, the more they yell and get frustrated, the more we are going to try and feed that anger (yes, i am guilty). Also instead of trying to make punishment so severe, say "take it like a (wo)man". I had a language arts teacher that did that and I felt the least threatened in her class as far as punishments go.
Bottom line: Less frustration and boring, and more fun, excitement, and humor. Kids learn better anyway when they are having fun! πŸ™‚

I happen to like my school and cannot come up with many problems thay my school has. We are given enough time to get from class to class and go to our lockers and use the restroom if needed. My school has good lunches. And amazing teachers. And Im not saying all this to brag. Its just that so many students are picky. You have great teachers, its just that you will not look for the good stuff about them. If you do not like the lunches then bring your own. And if you say school unifroms because people dont have the money to buy them, well i have a few pairs of jeans that came from walmart people comment on them saying they like them, also uniforms are expensive too just cause you cant have a $20 pair of jeans or shoes that cost $50 then dont say anything. Somepeople come up with all these problems with there school just because they dont like it. I like my school and all my teachers. They push me and that all that matters to me. Not the school building, not the lunch, not the clothes, just the teachers. And sorry if anybody thinks i bragging or talking bad about anyone im not sorry

School is a important part of our society where the main focus should be helping the students achieve their goals for their future. But when teachers are payed less than people with G.E.D.'s and high school deplomas for doing work in an automotive factory, the motivation for teachers is diminished. You want school to be a place for molding minds, show a little respect to those who are trying help them achieve their goals by paying teachers more than what they are recieving now. If California can have over $500,000,000 for the funding of building schools, funds for the faculty should be 10x that.

I live in a good school district, but I think that our schools could be better if we set aside more money to use. Because we are running head-first in to a sea of new technology; we just can't afford it, and that's not including budget cuts. If we don't start saving more money so that we can afford the technology that our schools want, then we are going to continue to have less teachers and growing class sizes. This year my teachers have 35 students on average in every one of their classes, last year my friend had 38 students in her class and they barely fit all the desks in the room. Our schools are running out of materials because they've been lost, are being used by someone else, or have broken, but right this moment, we aren't in an ideal position financially to be replacing them.

I think we should use the money, not all on on schoolbooks, but on things for the students such as clickers. It is alittle thing we got in our school just a few days ago. They allow students to take tests on them so we can save trees. I also think teachers should be more interactive with kids so the kids won't have to sit around while trying to figure out things themselves, because the teacher isn't explaing the subject well enough that the student can understand it.

The thing i think should be changed about my school is to be able to pick out what we want to eat instead of having to just eat what they give you. ( P.S. beacause sometimes the food is disgusting!!!)

Teachers. If they can teach you, so be it, if they cannot teach you and you are left behind in their class, then they can't be considered a teacher, they are the ones who stick to the curriculum and try to speed their classes through and don't teach the students, they just feel as though no matter if they teach or not, in some crazy, imaginary world we will still somehow learn what they "teach".

i think we should have more choices in our school so that we can understand our classes better and have more fun while working......it wouldn't be fun just sitting around and working and not understanding anything you are doing. you need a teacher who is fun and is willing to help you

I think that I would change the schedule (Freshman have this, Sophomores have that, etc.) because my school is having trouble with getting a flexible schedule with all of the changes we make. It has to be a good schedule that fits, doesn't overwhelm or confuse anybody, and flexible if there does have to be change. You have to have time for extracurricular activities that can be during school, have meetings for each grade to come up with more ideas, and have everyone agree with the decisions.

I think the only way to make a school the best, is to make sure your teachers know what you need in your specific curriculum. Some teachers give you work that is too hard or too easy for you. Alot of students also don't have as much capability as others to learn harder things. Some teachers know what students really need. Such as speech teachers and speacial ED. teachers.

I think that an improved computer system in our school would benefit us greatly. Our school is always having trouble with computers being slow. We have tried getting new servers, but it makes little difference. Also, to cut back on costs, we have many of the hall lights turned off and right at 3:30, the air conditioning is turned off. More money would probably be the most beneficial.

I would lower the lunch prices, as, they're not worth it and have the cafeteria serve healthy food, instead of Chicken nuggets, Pizza and Tater tots. I'd also try and raise funds for more supplies and textbooks, since mant schools really need them and get rid of our new grading system. And lastly, I would add a creative writing class, so that aspiring writers like me would be able to improve their skills.

It would be nice if we had a study hour where we can do all of our homework and not have to worry about it when we get home. That way you won't have so much homework and get a good night sleep.

The school system simply should rethink their methods. Even the public school I attend seems more like a military school. Students if given more freedom do not act out as much, but when restrained to much they feel the desire to act. Eventually all this desire is released in a single action causing major disruption in the classroom. With a little more freedom students would act out less and grade averages would increase.
If a student is more involved they find it is easier to understand than if the teacher just stands there and repeats it over and over. HAnds on experience is easier way to learn, while it can't be used in all lessons the ones that could use it should use it.
Regularly scheduled extracurriculum activities other than sports should be offered, many schools offer this but mine does not, such as chess club and other academically based clubs or organizations. The students should have more events, such as rewards for achieving goals pushing the child to understand it better.
A teacher that is willing to spend time after school with a single student who doesn't understand the lesson is great. THe student then gets the extra help he or she needs and feels more comfortable with asking for help. So a caring teacher is essential and is the backbone of the school system.
You asked if students should be friends with their teachers on Facebook. I say yes and no. Yes because they can ask for help and really get to understand it all. No because a teacher student relationship should remain professional. It really depends upon who the student is and who the teacher is on this topic.
Lastly I have to say something about the disciplinary measures, I myself believe in corporal punishment and I'm a student. Corporal punishment sends a clear and powerful message that what you did was wrong. Many people might argue that corporal punishment should not be administered by the principal but by the parents. Quick question, would you rather your dad slip off his leather belt and punish you o rthe principal who has more strict rules about corporal punishment? I say I'd rather the principal, but then again I don't like to not be able to sit down for a week.

The change that would make the most difference in my education is if we got to do more expirements. Experiments are part of what make learning fun. Instead of being bored with your teacher just talking or reading out of a text book you get to actually be involved. I would say to make our school look better but I think it would make me focus more on the apperance than my work. Therefor, supplies for expirements would make a great difference in my education.

I believe the teacher-student connection is crucial to success in schools across America. Sometimes teachers do not address the general needs shared by all students. There is no feedback system for students to provide teachers in order to improve this process and change our teaching facilities into learning institutions.

Hi – I was born and raised in India and now live and work in US

I have observed Students and Schools here and must say US has one of the best 'Education' system. However here is my take

Students and schools up to a certain level (may be upto 10th grade) can do more to build a habit of MUST LEARN (books and basic education) before letting the natural talents to flourish, this is improtant becasue we have to get the foundation strong.

In India we have a board exam at 10th grade – unless you do well there things kind of become difficult there – this can be implemented here, it brings a level of competetiveness among students which is what they will face when they turn 18, it will actually be even worse – the gap in life experience, and responsibility of a 17 yr old and a 18 yr old is just too much and kids are not equiped to deal with it

I think that we should have better school lunches. When we eat, its kind of like an energy source for the brain. We don't have good food..so, most of the time, we don't do very good. The school serves us the same food, almost everyday! We need variety! We are growing...I mean, like, Come on!

    September 3, 2010 at 2:48 pm |
  445. Bob

I think that if teachers were more hands on with activies it would make uncertain subjects and assignments become clearer, I also think a lot better and longer school lunch would help because during lunch, it's a break from school and i think that we need more than a 15 minute break from school work to ease our minds and relax. A gross school lunch doesnt really help us to relax during the day.

A essential thing to fixing schools across America, would be making sure teachers know how to interact with students in a interesting and fun manner, while also controlling the class. A teacher should know how to peak the curiousity of the students while teach them skills for life. For example, to teach one how to find information, instead of handing students answers under their nose. Also, teachers are meant to teach, yet any disruption within the class can distract us learners. Distractions include other students being dissruptive, or making rude comments, which includes "poking fun" at any other students, or even the teacher. I think it is superb when a teacher is friendly with her class, but she needs to enforce special rules and bountaries in order to keep the class in a motion state of learning.
Also a ample concern remains with student nutrition. It is a official fact that America is turning into a obese country. This is partially because the foods servived in our schools are pizzas, chicken nuggets, chicken sandwiches made of non-white meat, in fact it is not even whole meat. We usually do not have vegtables, but instead fries. Also our school lunches vary prices with the quality of the food. It does not need to be five star lunches, yet I would like to think we are eating something that is going to help our body, our minds, function during the day.

Our School had to make mulptle cuts in the last year toward teachers. This upset not only the mood of the student body but the genral moral of the school remained down. Some of the teachers who didnt return had families that loved them and needed their money for support and some even had children at the schoo, who were pulled out becuse of the embrassment. I feel that the fincail problems shouldnt have to effect the students attended the schools or the teacher who have been cut. Our schoo remains growing and with the growing school and less teachers more and more classes are being cut or added to. It upsets me when one of my favorite classe has 35 students in it, there is no personal teaching or relationship between student and teacher i feel like that if there were lass students it would be a happier community and learning enviroment.

I THINK THAT SO WE COULD FIX OUR SCHOOL THE TEACHERS SOULD BE GIVING MORE HOMEWORK SO WE COULD BE ABLE TO DO MORE PRACTISE ON WHAT WE ARE WORKING ON. ALSO CLASSES SOULD BE SMALLER BECAUSE WHEN THERE IS A BIG CLASS THE TEACHER NEVER PAY ATTENSION TO THE STUDENTS,BUT WHEN IT IS SMALLER THEY WILL PAY MORE ATTENTION TO EACH PERSON.

I think schools need to have a good education and a good selection of differnet classes. But also good teachers as in like not to hard on the studnets to where they dont like the class but a teacher that explains it to where everyone understands so we still learn and enjoy coming to class.

Having Teachers that actually care about the students, one's that push you.. you may not like them now but in your future they'll make a HUGE difference.

    September 5, 2010 at 8:40 pm |
  495. Alyssa

I don't think lockers or the time your school starts really matters it all depends on if your teacher pushes you.. the food doesn't really matter as long as you eat something... in 30 years that won't matter.

    September 5, 2010 at 8:43 pm |
  496. Sam

The soda machines, and social hours don't matter it all depends on the education, because other countries there students are more worried about getting an education people nowadays in America are really lazy.

    September 5, 2010 at 8:46 pm |

people in china don't even take field trips and they don't have social hours or soda machines and their smarter than us... so i don't really understand how all that's going to help American

Have students who are disrespectful/ don't care be completely separated from those who care about their studies and respect others. Last year we lost a large amount of time in classes, waiting for kids to shut up and be quiet while another student/the teacher is talking, and teachers/administrators lecturing us on being respectful. In my school, having regulars and honors/AP classes is more than often not enough.

All of problems are different .
but one important point is to change the system to provide degree for teacher. I really think teacher needs opportunity to share variety of information or technique related recent student with someone even if they have a rest.

Students should come first, not the school itself. Parents, Teachers, Staff, everyone needs to be involved in whats going on. Most adults believe that they know whats best for kids to improve their education. But it would also be nice if they got students opinions too.

    September 6, 2010 at 11:49 am |

When improving the school I think teachers need to keep in mind the amount of homework being handed out. As kids we spend at least eight hours with school enforced activities. Most of us though spend closer to eleven with practice and after school clubs. Adding another two hours of homework doesn’t make us focus on our schooling anymore. Teachers already have an hour during the day to spend on their subjects. I don’t mind doing an hour or so of homework but I think teachers sometimes forget how busy a kid’s life is.

School can be fun and engaging at the same time. Teachers are just one part of the whole learning expierience and kids should know that not everyone is the best and teachers are just trying to teach us not be our best friend. Kids always complain about the food in the cafiteria and i believe that is a problem and well as bullying and rude behavior torwards kids and teachers as well. It stops kids from learning and paying attention in class. Kids need to know that you come to school for learing not socail hour.

One thing I would like to change is the class size. It is not that any of our classes are too big, it is because last year one of my classes only had 12 kids and the rest of my classes had around 25 students. I did far better in the class with 12 kids than with any of my other classes. It's because in a bigger class the teachers don't have time to make sure that every student completely understands the subject material. However, very good teachers can do this no matter what the class size is! πŸ™‚

Our school districts need to consolidate.
I live in an area with 4 towns within 30 miles of each other- each with their own school district. We spend hundreds of thousands of dollars paying admin to do a job that is duplicated in the next city. These dollars could be used to lower class sizes and improve facilities.

My fear is that school boards will never give up their power, and administrators will never sacrifice their jobs for the good of the children.

I think we should educate more about our teachers about the information of the school studies, and also the attitude toward students. Then students can improve their studying skills.

  509. De'auni

I think what I would do to fix our school is to take a lot of things away from them so that they won't get distracted and start play with the object. Another thing is that when a kid is put together with their friends they talk instead of working or if a student is placed by someone they don't like and they start fighting and then you have problems. and thats how i would fix my school.

    September 7, 2010 at 10:51 am |
  510. trajuan

i think that our school should stay the same because it dont matter what it looks like it just depends on our school because I THINK if the parents walk in the school to meet the teachers that will make them more satisfied

    September 7, 2010 at 10:53 am |
  511. deauni

I think maybe if the teachers took away recess away they would stay focus on their work. Because if they practice for a test and then go to play when they come back they would forget. and then when they fail it would have been the teachers fualt. Now another thing I would fix is the lunch because students are getting sick and tired of the same stuff over and, over again .why do think kids are always bringing in their own lunch from home because their tired. And last but not least homework should not be stacks of paper.I think i would change that by giving students a math sheet at a time.Thats how I would fix my school!!!!!!!!

I think what we should do is change the schools lunches. Having a healthy school food helps kids get smarter. And excise because lab test shows that more kids get smarter whith excise.

I think we should use more technology in our school work. It could help our students at our school get interested in the work. It could also help the student's grades and make them smarter. This could help kids who don't like school.

    September 7, 2010 at 11:32 am |
  516. Rachel

I think we should get more homework on the subject we need the most help on ,because giving like math homework when we need to know more about science then we just did math homework. We might pass math but we won't pass science. That is the one thing I would change about my school.

My school was newly built and doesn't have many problems so far, but as far as I can see, my school could use longer passing periods. There are some classes I need to rush to in order to be there on time. This is probably easier for other middle schools in my area because most of them don't have stairs like mine do.

I think what would make a difference is the teachers. I have one teacher who lectures and yells at us all day! what good does that do! We are all falling asleep and learning nothing! Pick good teachers!

My teacher Mr.Morecraft is very nice he can do up to 25 different voices. If you get 5 bad points you have to wright a huge sentence like 15 times. Yesterday he gave the class alot of homework. Today we had a little homework.

First off I would want to fix our school in the athletic area. Our teams are fun to watch, very talented. The only thing that is wrong with it is our crowd (fans) they don’t seem to be very involved. Some of the athletes enjoy hearing their name yelled or the team being cheered for. We need a louder crowd!
Second when we first come back to school or towards the end of the year it is miserably hot and not all the rooms have air conditioning. It would be very nice if every room could have their own air conditioner, or central air. It makes myself and most likely others less interested and more tired.

    September 8, 2010 at 11:01 pm |
  538. Alexis

The only thing i would change about my school is students listening to their ipods. I think its a huge distraction and they should be put away until the school day ends, or at least until lunch. During class i dont want to hear other students music blasting from different parts of the room, especially when i'm trying to concentrait on doing my assignment.

one thing that we can do to fix our schools is get better text books. Some of the text books that we use are holly pages torn out and the text books just are in bad shape and are falling apart. Another thing is that we could get a little more time in school then out and get a little more breaks between classes so kids can refresh there brains and get a little more focused.

I think it would be very beneficial for schools to have slightly longer days so that they could include a study period at the end of the day for students to work on homework. I would love to be able to discuss any questions at school with my peers and teachers instead of always just looking everything up.

    September 9, 2010 at 4:40 pm |

i think students shoud be allowed to express themselves to an extent limited by the teachers and principal. I also think that students should get paid for going to school based on how they do, gradewise (ex. if they get an "F" then they wont get paid, but if the get an "A" then they would get paid in something depending on how the scholl is run).

    September 9, 2010 at 8:52 pm |
  557. JESUS

1.) I THINK THAT MY SCHOOL SHOULDN'T SELL SUGAR DRINKS BECAUSE STUDENTS DONT CONSENTRATE WELL AND MAY HAVE BAD GRADES.]
2.) I THINK THANT SCHOOLS SHOULD HAVE BREAKES MORE LONGER DAYS AND MORE OFTEN BREAKES SO STUDENTS WOULD THINK BETER.

I honestly don't think i would change a whole lot about my school. I grew up here my whole life and I'm quite content with our education system, dress code, everything.
Altough I would like to try a block schedule. Also I would enjoy the privilege of eating in class...which I strongly believe should be allowed as long as it doesn't cause a distraction. I know that i personally can't focus when my stomache is growling!

In my opinion, I think school would be more enjoyable if we sat in more comfortable chairs. Teachers should be more active with the class, get to know each kid and communicate with us, students, better! We should get more time between classes, sometimes I can't get all my books and walk to class in time. Also, we should get more of a variety and be able to choose our classes!

I think that school should start later so that we aren't quite so tired and we can be more focused on our work. I understand why we have homework, but i think it should be cut down and that it isn't always a good idea. When we go home, kids want to unwind and get away from it while they can, but they have to do more work. Also some kids are forced to stay up late in order to finish their homework and can't get the good night sleep that they need for school the next morning.

Our school is perfect and all, but I think it's unfair because the high school got new band instruments while the middle school has to still use the old instruments.I think that we might need to bye new instruments for the middle school. I just became a student council rep. for my class, and I have plenty of ideas. I would make lunches healthier. You would only be able to get seconds on the healthier stuff. I also think lunch should start half an hour earlier. I would have everybody have to learn Junior Great Books and Exemplars, even if your below grade level. You would get a JGB or Exemplar from a different grade level.

Better food and drinks. When you have almost the same exact thing every single day, you start to feel sick and burnt out on the food. The economy today is really hard to be able to buy healthy foods because the prices raised on all the "good" food. So most kids dont have the money to bring a luch from home so they buy a lunch at school which in my opinion is disgusting! Also they need to stop serving milk and serve something better, like water, Capri-Sun etc. Makes the whole meal so much better just by the drink!

well there are many things that could fix my school. the lunchs could be way better and alot healthier. we could use some of the money we get to put toward that. also i think we should get more sports. our school is way small and the main sports are football, volleyball, golf, track, and basketball. i think we need like soccer or a swim team.

    September 21, 2010 at 12:34 am |
  596. riley

i think that my school is ok but i think it can be alot better
one thing they could change is that they coud make our lunch time a little longer because people that are at the end of the lunch line have to stand there for like 30 minutes and our lunch is only 45 so by the time they sit down almost half the people are done with theirs and they only have 5 to10 minutes to finish their lunch.

I think something my school needs work on is the school lunches, the pizza is dripping with grease and occasionally I find hair in it.

    September 21, 2010 at 5:49 pm |
  598. Misaki

I think my school should ameliorate the fairness of students and teachers and the school rules For the equality of students and teachers, I think every classroom in my school should have an air-conditioner because for the teachers' room has three air- conditioners while students only have fans. Also for the school rules is because we are not allowed to use mechanical pencils and there are no school bells and so we have to look at the clock and work by ourselves.

Longer classes but shorter school days.

One change in our school that i would want to happen is the school offering different classes. Right now we only offer AG or Buissness classes for our elective classes. I would want more of a variety like having a cooking class or an art class. I think people wanting to persue a career in one of those would like the extra help to start doing that early on in high school. Also i wish that our school lunch program would offer healthier choices and two main dishes to pick from instead of just one.

if the teachers make learning fun and not boring i think everyone would like that alot better and kids will then enjoy learning more.

Fixing our schools is an awsome thing but in our school they should have our own containers made out of metal and then we would save a lot and a lot of paper for our world and save many things!! πŸ™‚

    September 22, 2010 at 5:44 pm |
  603. Zuriah

If I could change any one thing about my school, I would get rid of our 45 minute early realease and bring back the 3 hour delay start on tuesdays once a month, so we can all sleep in and rest our brain. That way we can think better.

    September 23, 2010 at 11:50 am |
  604. RLYN

i think it would be better if the some school could get some more computers and an internet access...
it will be esier for us to look up to the certain subject and to reseach more about the topic given by the teachers...

    September 23, 2010 at 11:52 am |
  605. Laura

I think we should have water fountians outside because when we have recess and we are thirsty we have to wait until we go inside. Also they should let the sixth grade and maybe fith grade disect a frog. But other than that I am having a great school year with all my friends, and I have an awesome teacher!

    September 23, 2010 at 6:12 pm |
  606. Mollie

i think my school is almost perfect. the cafeteria could serve less greasy food, but other than that everything is perfect.

    September 23, 2010 at 6:51 pm |
  607. Cody

I think my school should be more roomy I get all cramped up in the hallways, we should be able to walk through the halls of school without shoving in to each other..... and it should be willing to give more money to the students for field trips and outside extra curricular activities....And that the teachers should be dedicated to teach you

    September 23, 2010 at 8:59 pm |
  608. Miguel

I think we should have better lunches. Our schools food is always uncooked. The school is very long and boring most of the time. i also think we should have less homework because they use to much paper.(=

fixing the school thats better than paying $400 for bus ride we could save a lot of things. You could even recycle stuff like bottles paper ect. Well thats my opinion about this bye.

    September 24, 2010 at 10:13 am |
  614. SB

I think that the teachers should make learning more fun. We sit in class for 90 minutes and sometimes we do nothing but read out of books. I want it to be fun to learn.

    September 24, 2010 at 10:15 am |
  615. Cheyanne

I think schools should start recycling more to help the enviroment. I also think that there should be after school clubs for people who want to join in to help the enviroment. :]

  616. Paolo

One change in my school would be the water fountains they taste a little weird and you have to go across the hallway just to get a drink. Another change would be bathroom passes at our school we only get 3 passes for the semester it seems unfair during classrooms. I think fixing our school is a great idea to help with us students.

    September 24, 2010 at 10:23 am |
  617. legit

one thing i would change about my school is the time school starts i think it is to early. that means alot of people ar tired during class. that is wat i would like to change.

Many things could fix my school, but due to budget cuts we can't make those changes.:( We've even have to have 3 days of school cut OFF! At least now we can have a fall break for Thanksgiving πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ :)!

    September 24, 2010 at 10:32 am |

we would be helping the school to go green and it would be helping the economy

    September 24, 2010 at 10:33 am |
  622. Zuhayr

I would definitely like to fix our school, and i would start with changing the class change times to even times. like instead of getting out at 9:02, add some extra time to certain classes so that it could be 9:10. I think that this would help students get to class ontime

    September 24, 2010 at 1:38 pm |
  623. Maryanne

I think it will help the envirment if we throught paper in to the recycling bin. Some people don't even do that! I mean that is so wrong not to save the envirment! πŸ™‚

I think when its nice outside to have lunch outside.I also think we need prettier p.e uniforms.I also think we shoul have a little free time like to play outside.

    September 24, 2010 at 1:43 pm |

I think many schools should School Uniforms. It would help with many school porblems such as being bullied for your clothes, And going against the school dress code.(:

  626. Leigh

I would change the books from the library. They are all old and nobody reads them I feel they should make better copies. A nd get some new books... we don't want to see the same ones over and over again. They should do a raffel for books at our local library for all they schools. πŸ™‚

    September 24, 2010 at 1:50 pm |
  629. Ethan

Our silverware should be metal so we can stop wasting all of the plastic we use. We should also have Solar panels for light. We should have a longer P.E for more Physical Education.

If I had to change one thing about how my school taught it would have to be either of two. The first choice would be to have less or no homework because that way we do not have to stress at home. It would give the students a time to rest. My second choice would be more hands on and "fun" lessons. If we had more hands on and "fun" lessons people would pay attention more and since they (the students) had fun they would remember the lesson better.

    September 29, 2010 at 6:06 am |
  649. Kaylee

My school is not a bad school to go to. But there are a lot of schools that can't have what we have, and I feel bad for the kids that go there. I also think that people should help schools that can't afford to do "normal school stuff".

I would change the amount of teachers we have for one class to maybe two or even three for the bigger class rooms because the one teacher cant help every body and he cant see every thing that is what i would change

    September 30, 2010 at 12:11 pm |
  653. mahdiah

I would change cell phones because students need cell phones what happen something is wroung but not in class i am talking about at lunch break time when you are not in class. And teahers should not take are phone just because they see they take it when we are playing with it not cause they take and they see it. We should have free lunch just because we are in school we should pay for anything in school they suppsed to pay for anything, lunch need to be free for kids just for they should it serve lunch then thats my comment.

    September 30, 2010 at 12:17 pm |
  654. erik

The one thing i would change about the school is the time the school starts. The reason i would change that is because alot of students are tired and don't pay attention to the work. The time we should have school is at 9:20 because students at that time are awake and are not sleepy and they can pay more attention to the teachers.

    September 30, 2010 at 12:20 pm |

I have one question: DOES IT REALLY MATTER WHETHER THE SCHOOL I FANCY OR NOT!!!!!!!??????? All that matters is the education we recieve. This is a shoutout to the kids in my class.

I personaly think my school has the worst luches [health and taste wise]. Yesterday we had a cheese burger. The burger look VERY dry! I bring sack luch everyday but people who were eating it hated it.

I would replace all the teachers with people actually qualified to teach.

    October 1, 2010 at 5:51 pm |
  659. Jessica

I would defenitly chose for the middle school's and high school's a longer passing time. If the teacher shuts the door on us, or we are marked tardy, we miss part of our class. How are we going to learn anything, when we can't have time to go to our locker for our books?

    October 2, 2010 at 3:12 pm |
  660. Fiona

Umm I do not know my school is amazing we just finish some remodeling and it's beautiful. I would think that there might need to ba a little more diversity but other than that I love my school and how it is made and I would do nothing to change it. (not to sound all perfect though).

    October 4, 2010 at 6:37 pm |
  661. iliana

First i would like to say i can change something from my school in would change uniform cause we all look alike, and wearing different clothes would help us express ourselves. Also, another thing i would change, would be lunches they're not so good.

    October 5, 2010 at 11:15 am |
  662. Haylee

I would put more more after school activties in for free.dances for middle schools because they are all 8 grade and up not cccooollll:(

  663. Erin

I think if there was one think that i would change about my school i think they should adress the rumers that people are spreading aroung i hate the fact that people will start rumors about other people and they dont like when people start rumors about them. To do that they should have a day were all the kids in one day could come together and confess that they did start a rumor and be freinds.

The thing that i would change would be the costs of the whole school....
first the lunch price should be lowered and and the game costs should go up that will raise better money for the school instead of the state.

    October 5, 2010 at 7:35 pm |
  666. Tim

I think my school needs more windows and fresh air. Some days when I go outside to leave, the regular sun light hurts my eyes. I don't think that is very good.

Maybe when your school has social events, be more creative with how you spent your money. Or make the events more fun and enjoyable to attend.

    October 5, 2010 at 7:42 pm |
  668. JASHA

I think my school needs better lunch food and not exactly better foods but more varieties I think kids would eat more instead of just throwing everything on their tray away............................

  670. Mrs. Mittermann's Social Studies Class

Probably the only thing my school needs is a Mens Volleyball team. There is just one problem, we wouldn't be able to play against anyone. The closest school with a mens volleyball team, i think, is an hour and a half away.

    October 6, 2010 at 10:27 am |

If I could fix my school, I would hold more fundraisers for my school. I believe that my school needs the money to improve our education. I would also try to stop education cuts, because we (the students) are the future of this country. If we (Us citizens) want a better future, we should really consider stopping education cuts.

    October 6, 2010 at 8:10 pm |
  677. Gary

I think we need better ways to cool are selves off in the fall and spring. If we only have one fan in each classroom not everybody is getting cool air. We also need a water bottle machine for kids to buy waterand a drinking foutain outside because its not fair that we are only allowed to get drinks from drinking fountain down the hall and the teachers get a pop machine. and then we have to wait until the end of recess to get a cool drink. Its burning hot out there!!!

    October 7, 2010 at 6:14 pm |
  678. Emma

OOH OOH I KNOW! I'd change my school by creating middle school play grounds. seventh graders can have fun too you know!

    October 7, 2010 at 8:24 pm |
  679. Anna

My idea of CHANGE OUR SCHOOLS is that we should make school fun because a lot of teachers are making it boring by just telling them info. when we should really fun fun like games and stuff to make it fun so more kidz come to school and less bored, tired, and sad looking faces!!!! πŸ™‚

    October 7, 2010 at 8:48 pm |
