Pay What You Can

Would a "pay what you can" restaurant succeed where you live?

At a cafe in St. Louis, the prices aren't what you have to pay; they're suggestions!  If you don't have enough money, you pay what you can.  If you have extra, you can leave it to help the company stay in business.  And if you have no money at all, the managers say you can offer to wipe tables or help clean up.

It's an interesting idea that you don't see done too often - especially at a time when so many people don't have jobs.

Would it work where you live?

I think it is an WONDERFUL, idea. I don't think it will ever happen where I live! It might in a few years, but not right now. 😦 If it does happen hopefully, people are honest, becuase they could just say they don't have money, but they really do!!! So, i am hoping it will happen.:)

I think this is a great way for people who can't pay. I just hope people don't abuse the fact that you can pay less!

I think that is a very intresting way of doing things, It would really work in this town that i live considering alot of people are unenployed and cant afford to go out to eat.

It's a good idea and I think it could work not only where I live but everywhere. It could help us a lot in a time where we need help. The only problem is the cafe might not earn enough to survive. Some people who have money might not give enough.

Fifty years ago I would say yes because morals and the a man's decency and character would help the restaurant stay in business, but now if there were a lot of these kinds of restaurants everyone would scam them or rip them off.

This returant would not last in my town because if we had the choice to pay or not most people wouldn't pay because time are tough and money is tight

It's a brilliant idea! This is one of the greatest way to share things fairly. The image of society will be more cleared if this idea spread out to the whole world.

Where i live the pay what you can probably would not work. the are alot of theives around where i live, and even if they can not pay they would eat and leave.

I would pay the suggested price. Knowing that I'm helping to sustain a business that is helping people less fortunate than I, while helping others, would bring me satisfaction

I do not think it would work where I live because it is hard enough to find a job but that's why they pay there employees to do their job, no for us to do it.

It's a great idea for that town. But it wouldn't work in my town. I know too many people who would take advantage of the idea and bring a penny in and eat a whole bunch of food, or stuff like that. I just know in my town it would be a dine for disaster.

I think this option is a very intelligent idea, which would work in the subarbs where the average median is usually higher. While in the city I would not expect this to a good option.

That seems quite fair enough and reasonable but if everything were to be like that it would tangle up everything and make life harder then what it already is.

It's kind of a good idea, because most people don't have a lot of money. But it could cause the cafe/restaurants to loose money, jobs, ect.

The restruants all around the country probably would not want to do this. All they care about is making money. And they aren't going to make money if customers pay whatever they want. The only thing that will give anybody a special price is something like a food place for homeless people.

Yes,many people have the money for it. I think that would work. But the disadvantage is all you have to do for food is wipe tables.

I think that the cafe is a great idea. It's a wonderful way to show how a community can work together to maintain something that means a lot to them. With the goodwill of people in my town, I think that something such as this would work.

I think it would work. It is not because we have a lot of money. It's because our town people are kind . We had a coin bank that all of us can donate, and it was full in short time. We send that money to world vesion.

I think it is a great idea. Everyone is really only a step away from poverty, and it can happen to anyone. Offering a service of food in exchange for anything you can give, monetarily or in service, is a great system True, there will be those who exploit it, but there will surely be just as many who will see it as a good act and contribute generously.
I live in Bellingham, WA, and it is a very community-oriented city, and I believe it would work well there for people struggling, and even for students who may not have the financial means to support themselves past the very basic necessities.

I think that people in my area would take advantage of this, and not in a good way. It may be successful, depending on the area. However, in order for it to work, people who have the money would have to pay more than the items they get. But isn't overpaying just wasting money? It may be considered generous, but you and your wallet would probably be better off just paying regular price at another cafe.

That seems super nice, and it helps family's or people that don't have a lot of extra money. This would work where I live because many people don't have a lot of extra money. The thing is people could only pay a small values and the business could fall.

I think this would work where I live. Since it is tough times nowadays, people don't really go out to eat alot. If this happens more people will go out to eat because they don't have to pay the full price and can pay whatever they can afford.

It will work where we live and how many homeless people are on the streets close to fast food restaurants, they can eat there! Where all they have to do is help clean up! It's a easy job when you come to think of it.

This would be a terrific idea in my town in Colorado because there's a good mix of people here-I think there would be enough people who gave more and enough who couldn't afford to pay the suggested price to allow the cafe to run successfully. It's a great idea-I think it allows people with financial problems to escape that for a little while and still have a nice meal.

I think that it's a great idea to have people pay what they can, so that everybody can eat good food. A shop like this would be a wonderful addition to my small town, because many people can't afford what other food vendors sell.

I think that that is a very kindhearted idea that the Saint Louis Panera bread store is doing the pay as you can because alot of people cannot pay as much as others because of the amount of money the food is priced. Yes, i Think it would work in our area because we are in the same situation.

  40. mikaylaa

i think it is a very nice thing to do, because many people cannot pay about certain amounts for the price of food today. a situation could be, if there were poor or homeless people could either pay what they have or wash tables to pay for it. when people buy something that might be six dollars, if they pay fifteen instead. it takes place for other people. it would work in our area, i think.

Yes, it would work – my community is really nice like that.
It would work in Bermuda because people often share back and forth. Not in D.C., people are more concerned about themselves. Bellingham WA it would work because it's a smaller town.
It could work anywhere because everyone's psyche when it's up to them they can be more fair than when the decision is made for them. It would work, because there are some kids in my town that don't have much money who would do something like that.
It could be successful, because people who do have money can help pay and those who do not can help out in other ways.

I think it is a bad idea to use because then the people that pay will be out money.Well the people that don't pay are just out s few hours. Also it is like just givein away free food cause u still have to pay ur employs.

How to stop people from taking advantage of pay as much as you can is to. Watch regular customors so that might mean the have the pay to pay regular price . Or more and the people that dont come in as often could mean they dont have the money to pay as much as the regular price. Also another way to provent this from happening is to watch what they dress in if they show up in a suit they can pay as much or more if they come in old dirty close they might not have the money

  45. berlinda

That sounds a good idea, but in reality, it may not work. First, people would not feel so comfortable when they pay the bill because they have to think over how much they have to pay and how much money would please both the restaurant and themselves. this is actually a little bit embarrassing moment; Second, What if many customers would like to choose helping clean up rather than paying? would that be freaky if the restaurants had so many table or dish cleaners?

    May 20, 2010 at 9:32 am |
  46. Alicia

Yes, a restaurant in which the prices are simply suggestions would work where we live because the economy is so bad. There are many people willing to work, but can't find jobs. They would also be willing to work in the restaurant to help pay for their food. At the same time, it may not work where we live because people may not give enough money . We live in a rural, agricultural town where many people grow their own food rather than going to a restaurant to get it.

I believe that this is a great system. I think that most of the people in todays society can regonize the fact that all people cant support themselves as well as others. This mutal responsibilty idea down in missouri could really help to jump start ta brigther looking future of food service and other aspects that are part of our everyday lifes every where else.

I really think it might work where I live, but in small towns there isn't really enough through traffic for people to know where it is. In the summer in towns that get busy it might really take off, but in the winter months, I'm not really sure how much business there would be.

I don't really think that a place like this would be able to work in my town. It would benefit many people, but I don't think that the the amount people paid would be able to keep it open. I think that this would work better in a larger place such as the city of Bridgeton for example.

We do not think this would work in our community. We feel that there are to many rude or ignorant people who would not pay any money, when they actually have money to give. In theory this is a great idea and we would love to see it work out, but we are skeptical.

We think that alot more people would be able to get food. 'Pay what you can' is a good idea because even people that can't afford to eat are satisfied.
We think it's an awesome idea. The restaurant is thinking about other people, not their business. We think that the idea of the donation box is very reasonable thing; people that can't afford to still get to eat. This is a very generous idea.
In our little community of Steinhatchee, it would be a very big help. We have people here that don't have jobs or enough to eat. People come from out of town to visit here (and usually are financially well-off), and hopefully they would make donations to help feed others. It would give Steinhatchee a good 'rep'!

I think it would work where i live. i think when people aren't being forced but are given the choice we are more generous. my community does a lot to help people in need, so i think they would pay a few extra dollars to help people in need.

I think the "take what you need, pay what you can" thing the bread shop is really good. I think it would be good for somewhere that sells food in our community. It does help people if they are less fortunate to pay less but then others can donate much more.

No it wouldn't because Most restaurants are to expensive to go to and not alot of people would go to expensive places especially when most jobs are also running low on money. Other restaurants like fast food plaes are so expensive so there ok to go to because it's cheaper then the fancy kind Of restaurants. Also our city doesn't have alot of restaurants around here anyway. I think to actuAlly go to a nice or an ordanary restaurant you would have to get a good job where you can get good money then maybe you will be able to get into a good restaurant and help pay for the stuff that they need.

I think that this is a great idea. People that really need help could use this for help. I like that if they don't have the money to pay they can just help clean tables. That's awesome! If this was in my township, I think it'd be wonderful! Adults that need to feed their kids can pay what they have.

I think the "pay what you can" idea would work in my community. As far as I've seen, my neighbors and I are all good people who wouldn't mind donating and helping others in need. I personally feel the restaurant plan is a good one and should be spread throughout the country.

I think this is a great idea because it offers people who don't have much money a reasonable option for paying for food. Also it gives people who are willing to, a chance for a random act of kindness by letting them give extra money for the ones who are in need. It is also a great way for the company to get business.

    May 20, 2010 at 10:43 am |
  75. Braden

I think its a very generous offer to people that cant offord it. Since not many people use this idea it will probably make more money than with regular prices. This will increase the population of people going there and probably encourage other people to use the same idea. Then if more people use the idea it will probably lose profits but since there the only ones it should be a good business move. Also it gives back to the community greatly!

Where I live, I think this system would work pretty well. I know that the number of people who pay more and the number of people who pay less would probably be about the same.
On the other hand, I don't think it would work as well in parts of the country where people don't have as much money. There would not be enough people who paid more to balance it all out.

I think that it's a good idea but, it probably will not last long if all people have to do is go in eat a lot and just wash a table. As long as other people keep over-paying, it will most likely last.

Its a pretty good idea besides the fact that there is a lot of untruthful people that can actually afford reagular food, and would go there because they can get it cheaper which isnt fair to the people that really cant afford it so i think its the same for every communtiy if it will work or not.

I think this could be a good thing for the econemy because then the familes without as much income can still eat and have a good time with out going in debt and the famlies with more income can donate more money, and people that can't aford to give any money at all can wash tables. This she be done in semi-rule areas and low income areas so that people will be able to eat every night.

i think the pay what you can is a very good idea, if people need food they can get food and pay what they have or if the need money for something else the can wash tables for a little while. i would probably pay what i have (no duh) and if i had more money i would pay $5-$15 extra if i had the money i would also clean tables for a while because i like to help people and it would help the company.

I think that it might work were I live. But depends on the people of course the kids would go and not pay anything.

I think it is an interesting experiment, but I do not think it would work where I live. Too many kids, teens, and grownups would come in and pay much less than necessary, so the cafe would have no way of making money. To many people I know it would be like free sample heaven.

We think that this restaurant idea has many pros and cons. On the positive side you have families who can have a possible healthier meal choice for a price they can afford rather then going to McDonalds and loading up on Fat and Calories. We also think this is a good idea for families or individuals who cannot afford a healthier option to work off the food they eat. We are concerned about the employees that work their (Cleaning tables, etc.) will they be out of a job or working hours due to a lot of people working for food?
On the other side of the issue, we are wondering if people are really going to pay more for the meal then the prices that are suggested. With the way the economy is we are wondering if people really have extra cash to be just "giving" away out of the kindness of their heart. To keep a business running we are wondering if with people just paying the minimum price, partial price, or working for the food is really going to cover all of the mortgage, utilities, supplies, food, employee wages, etc.

We think this is a good idea but we do not think it would work here because of the amount of people who are unemployed and are struggling as it is. We think people here would take advantage of the restaurant instead of being a good citizen and helping a business out. If the economy was in better shape we think this idea would be possible if it were in a City rather then small town.

We think that what they are doing is a great thing. They are making food affordable for people who couldn't pay full price. But others could take that for granted, and people who could afford it would be able to pay for what the others couldn't.

i dont think it would work. too many people would lie and say yeah, i dont have any money. i mean washing tables can help "pay" the bill, but not to help the buisness run.

i think this is a great idea with what they are doing. i think that they are going to inspire many people in what they are doing and that every one should try and pay as much as they can and een a little more if they need to so that they stay open and every one can just live in peace and we wont have to worry about not haeing food when we are low on money we wont get as much but we will get something and thats what counts, i hope that people around the country find a way to try this even if it isnt that long mabe just a triall period to see if it is right for them.

I think it is really dumb. Because people will obviously lie. No offense to them but that's how our society is. And people will say they dont have enough money and will take 3 loafs for like $3. I just think that they should have a set price.

I think that what they are doing is a good thing. I think that it could work out any where as long as you something balancing out the income. If people just come in and start taking advantage of this food, they're taking away from the people that cant afford it. If everybody can do what they can, that idea would work out

i live in coeur d' alene, id, and i don't think that that sort of resturant would work here cause there are alot of people who don' t have money to eat out and there are more people without money than those that do. if that sort of resturant came to cda, it would go out of buisness

I really don't think it would work where I live.I might depending on the person, some people might just want to donate because there good people, but most wouldn't pay at all. They would just take the food and leave.Theres also the possibility that they might actually donate becuase they might not want the restaurant to go out of buisness because they like that place so much.

    May 20, 2010 at 11:44 am |

I THINK IT IS A BAD IDEA! Why would you do that?! Of course everyone aren't going to pay what they they can afford. It's like with taxes the richer people have to pay more and the people who aren't as wealthy have to pay less in which it's balanced out because of the richer people. I think you should have to set a price for the cost of something. I think in time people will just end up not paying enough and it won't work out for the restaurant. .

I live in the state of Idaho, and I dont believe the business would be able to keep running if we were to not have to pay and just leave basically our spare change. People here in Idaho are not very appreciative of what we get and if we were to get a business like this one then we would just pay the change in our pocket and not give the owner what he/she deserves. We all need to pull our weight and pay the price (suggestion) of the food, if not more.

    May 20, 2010 at 11:45 am |
    • Nick

I think that it would work for where I life. The reason I think this is because people who don't have enough money can just simply help by cleaning up a little. And for the people who do have enough money they can just pay a little extra to help the company out. This could be very succesful for buisness people depending on peoples generocity. This also could be not so succesful because many people could just say they don't have money when they do forceing the restuarant to close. But you never know what's going to happen.

I think it's a great idea! It helps those in need and the people who don't have that much money. It's also a good way to help the community. It would be awesome if more restaurants did that, especially with the bad economy and such high prices on everything else.

I think it’s a good idea, and that it can help the economy. It’s helping people keep what little money they have, and they’re getting tips from people who have the money. I fear that it won’t stay open too long, but it looks like it might just work. It’s a great idea for those who don’t have a lot of money to spend eating out. I think it’s also good that they have suggestions of their menu board, so people can know what to expect. I think it’s a wonderful idea, and I also think that more cities and restaurants should do that.

I don’t think it would work because most people are really cheap, and only do as much as they have to. I think it would last for a while but then people would lose interest and wouldn’t pay enough to keep it running. But it just wouldn’t last.

    May 20, 2010 at 11:46 am |
  126. Trent

I think it wouldnt work in are city because people will just say they only have a little bit of money. Your people would say they dont have any thing and just wipe tables or something. The buisness would lose money here.

I think that the idea of doing this is interesting, but the people in my town are too cheap. No one would go there because everyone wants exact change. I would go there because I am too young to worry about money and it is a great idea. I think that this is a really good idea, but it would probably not work in my town.

I think it might be able to work. If the people who have a lot of money would donate more, even a dollar more could help. It might not work if people, who have enough to pay, but decide to pay less than they can, the place will go out of business.

    May 20, 2010 at 11:46 am |

I think that it is a really good idea. However, it can turn into an issue. After a while, people are going to stop paying what they should and think that someone else is going to just pick up their slack. Eventually, everyone will think that and the cafe will crash and burn. I think they should make everyone pay at least something so that they can make a profit to keep the cafe open.

I think that that is nice of them to do that. There aren’t a lot of people in the world that would do something like that to pay what you want or give how much you want. It’s an interesting idea that’s very cool of them to do.

I don’t think that having a place like that would be a good idea for here... The unemployment rates are higher and higher every day. Most people that would go there would be people without money or are living on the street. I don’t think that the people that can afford what they eat would pay for anybody else.

    May 20, 2010 at 11:49 am |
  137. Quinton

I think that it wouldn’t work here...everybody is either cheap, or doesn’t have any money here. Also, people would go in all the time with like a dollar and pretend they don’t have any money, in order to get a cheap bite.

    May 20, 2010 at 11:49 am |
  138. Kevin

I believe that it is a good idea. However, this would work only for a short time because, the amount of people who couldn't pay the actual price of bread will grossly outweigh the number who can. After awhile the store would go bankrupt and would have to close. This is the same reason why non profit organizations such as the YMCA have a standard price that everyone must pay.

The pay what you can idea i think
it's great for the homeless. Because

I think this is a good idea. Especially for those who don’t have enough money to buy good food. I don’t think it would benefit in some places just because there are people that will just take the food and walk away with it and pay nothing. But on the other hand there are people that will see what the community is doing for those in need and offer more money. I’m glad to see people helping others.

The concept of paying what one can rather than a predetermined price is certainly a novel idea for food service. Whereas some musicians have had success with a sort of donations-only method (such as Radiohead with In Rainbows), this is due in large part to an already large following—and besides, most artists only make money off of touring and merch anyway. For a restaurant to attempt the same feat is to completely rely on the good (and wealth) of humanity. If the donation-Panera can survive on that good, then they certainly should. It’s an interesting non-business model. Like Jane Addams’ settlement houses, it allows for classes to intermingle more than they would at, say, a food kitchen, wherein the middle class only attends to give subpar food to men who make in a year what they make in a month. While that’s great for dissuading the terrible burden of white man’s guilt or covering service project requirements, it does little otherwise.
That said, I know plenty of kids with white man’s guilt that would jump at the chance to leave an extra five dollars of their step-dad’s money so that they can feel a little better. So sure, this could work.

I think that "pay what you can" is a unique idea created by the owner of the cafe. I feel that it really helps the community; especially for those who are unable to pay full price because of the recession. It will allow these people who are affected by our economy to eat and survive without worry. Unfortunately, I believe that in my community there are unmoral citizens who will take advantage of the kindness of the managers. I hope that this café will thrive and be successful and others will learn from it.

    May 20, 2010 at 11:56 am |
  144. Alison

I think that the idea of a café where people only have to pay what they can afford is a great idea, but I don’t think that enough people will make donations to keep it running. It will only work if so many people pay more than what their purchase is worth, which, in this economy, not that many people may be willing to do. Although the concept of being able to buy food even if you can’t afford it entirely because of other’s donations is great one, I don’t believe that it would work in my community. I think that too many people would try to take advantage of the business, but I hope that in that community it is able to prosper because it will help so many people.

The majority of the students in my Current Events class would like to see it work, but are sceptical. They believe that the success of the restaurant will depend completely on the generosity of people.

One student, on the other hand, doesn't believe it is possible for it to succeed. The reason is that if a billion dollar corporation like GM can go in the red for 3 years it is unlikely a non-profit organization like the restaurant will make it.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:08 pm |
  146. Stephanie

I think that’s a really nice thing to do, but also you have to be realistic and know that a lot of people would probably take advantage of it. You can not run a business not knowing if one day you’re going to even make a profit. I do not think it would work out where I live because of those reasons. I just feel like they are going to loose a lot of money. It’s very generous, but people are mean and you don’t know if they really can’t afford it or if they’re just looking to get a cheap meal because they can.

This economy today you don’t see many people offering this to the public it is… different. Many people I’m sure think this is risky but some probably think this is a very good idea and that the economy might bounce back a little from it. Keeping the company open must not be an easy task; I do though like how people will work for there food if they can not afford any and how some will pay extra to keep the restaurant open. This is a step in the right direction of turning the economy around and getting America back to what it was! America is going through a hard time and everyone has to put in the effort to get us back on our feet whether it’s a lot of a little.

I was surprised to see someone do this social experiment in these troubled times with the economy. I believe this experiment would work where I live because many people in my community have a heart and would give extra money for those who cannot pay. I find that this experiment will show that everyone is willing to help out others. It helps out those in need, just like a soup kitchen, except it offers people a wider variety of food for free so long as you do some work (like washing the tables). However, there is a downside to this experiment such as greedy people will not pay for any food and simply wash the tables in order to get food for a little labor. On the bright side of things, you will get those people who give way more than what the suggested price of the food is. In the end this experiment shows that people are always willing to help others even when times are tough and you can only pay what you can.

I think that people where I live would take advantage of this, I mean it’s basically free food if you don’t care about other people. Working for food is a good idea, but a lot of people may never pay and always clean up, so that wouldn't help the business at all. So, there are some obvious flaws in this idea. Personally, if a business is doing something like this then people should appreciate it and not take advantage of it, but that’s how people are these days.

I don't think this business plan will work. It is a good idea, but there's a problem with making a bet on humanity. That problem is that there is no humanity left. You will have poor people paying five dollars for a meal, and rich people paying one because they can. There aren't enough people left who genuinely care about others to make this plan work.

I think it is a good idea because the people who pay extra will help to cover the cost of the people who are having a hard time with their finances. The help cleaning up will also mean they don't have to pay as many employees. I worry that the company may not make enough money to stay in business, though.

I think it's a good idea, but if people begin to take advantage of it the business will obviously tank. I know if i were to live there and i knew i didn't have much money, i would take advantage of the opportunity to get food for a lower price then anywhere else, and not really worry about the quality of the food I'm getting. The idea is good in heart and soul, but won't make it for long in the real world. Eventually people will begin to take advantage of it and take much more than they pay for, limits will have to be set and it'll no longer be the perfect picture that it appears to be anymore.

I think that the bread cafe is an awsome idea, I think that it is going to work out good for the people that have enough to pay for all of thier expenses, the food prices have rised and are hard to get threw the whole month. I think that it is allot similar to a food cupboard and I know for a fact that when it come to not have the bear necessities life gets real hard and seems like things are hopless and then you appreciate the small things and the kind people that when they help they know that its is going to go to someone who needs it more than them.

I think that it’s a good idea, but I don’t think it will work. People anymore are to eager to take a handout. Every now and then you will get a generous person to help out and pay a bit more for the food, but I think overall a lot of people will pay very little or at the normal price. But, I suppose seeing someone else give a little extra could influence you to do the same. I think it could work where I live. It’s a smaller town where everyone kind of knows everyone and they are willing to help out.

  163. Denis

I think this is a bad idea for the people. The people there would start to take advantage of it. Because if I was in the situation I would take advantage of it. This idea is good and everything for good people but eventually it will fail. It will be an epic fail of epic proportions. There is no humanity left in the world. This system will be rejected.

  164. Levi

I think that this is a great idea for companies to help boost our economy and show their efforts in helping those less fortunate. Sense the recession many people have stop eating out due to a lack of money within their budget. Restaurants such as this one will not only allow people to receive quality food at a price they can afford but also give others a chance to help pay for others who may be in need of a descent meal. If I was to eat at this cafe I would show my support of their program by paying around 20% more (the amount you would tip at other restaurants anyways) than the suggested donation for my food.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:34 pm |
  165. Ebone

I think that having this restaurant would be a great idea, but do i think it would work where i live..probably not. Some of the people around here would just take advantage of the fact that its free and not pay at all. Now of course you may find a few people who believe in giving, but the majority of the people would just not care less how things turn out for the resturant as long as they have wat they need now.

  166. Carmen

It might be a good idea where I live.I don't know because a lot of people are out of work,so I really don't know.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:42 pm |
  167. Trevor

I think this is a really good idea. Sometimes people can't afford to eat and the idea of the people who can't pay just helping by cleaning is really good. Hopefully this will work out nicely.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:44 pm |
  168. Daneyll

i think its nice to feed people that are down on their luck. but its also not smart because people can dress up homeless and pretend they can't pay

    May 20, 2010 at 12:44 pm |
  169. Angela

I think that his café has a great idea. Many people don’t have enough money to enjoy things like that, also makes people feel good because they help over people.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:44 pm |
  170. Poco

I think it could work. it sounds like a great idea, I think people will make big donations. People will want to make donations so it will stay in business.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:45 pm |
  171. Maycie

Yeah, I think it would work where we live. It’s a cool idea, especially with an economy like this. Maybe one day, somebody in my city will open a deli like this. I believe it could stay open here.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:46 pm |
  172. BoB

I think this is a pretty good idea but for the workers there they won’t get paid the normal amount of money they deserve for the job. If they do this idea it won’t really get them anywhere.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:46 pm |
  173. ashley

No I don' think it would work where I live because there would too many people that would pay less just to save a couple bucks. And not enough people would pay a little extra. It's hard to find generous people.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:46 pm |
  174. haley

I think is a grate idea. A lot of people would like to have things they can’t have and this way they can. I think there are people who would pay extra just to keep this running because it truly is a good way to support the community

    May 20, 2010 at 12:47 pm |
  175. Selene

This sounds like an interesting idea. I don’t know if it would work where I live, but I think that it would work in a bunch if other places. I know that at least half of the people would pay for less and some for more. I suppose it’s a toss-up whether or not the idea would work.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:47 pm |
  176. marcus

I don’t think it would work very well because people who work there probably won’t get paid well enough to live well. People might just use it as an excuse to get free food or for a cheap price and most don’t want to or cant pay a lot for a sub sandwich when they can save money

    May 20, 2010 at 12:47 pm |
  177. Cole

I think this is a very bad idea. There could be people out there that have lots of money , but want a cheap lunch. If this was to work out, people would have to be more honest.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:47 pm |
  178. Carter

I think this business is a great idea. Just because it is not for them self’s it is a donation. I think it if people have the right mind set this business can do really good. If it was here in my town I think it would do well because we have good people in our town.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:48 pm |
  179. Alyssa

i think that it wouldent work because there are ALOT of poor people and i think that they wouldent even really last that long.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:48 pm |
  180. Haley

I think that this an good idea because if people don't have the money they should wipe tables and clean after other people that way they learn their leason and don't ever try to eat and get away with it..

    May 20, 2010 at 12:48 pm |
  181. Gabe

I think that this might be something that could change restaurants all over the country. It could not work if people aren’t giving when they can give money. That is the only flaw in this plan. I think I might work in my city.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:48 pm |
  182. Alex

I think that that is very very good for people to only have to pay what you can. That would really help poor people. It would really be nice to have a restaurant like that near were we live. When there are homeless people and they don't have money, they can just go there and afterwards they can clean up the restaurant instead of paying. One thing that would not be nice would be if someone that had a lot of money came in and just ate for free.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:48 pm |
  183. Maday

This Cafe Is A Good Idea For Cities With A Huge Unemployment or Homeless Rate. It Would Suceed If There Were Many People Who Needed Food. In Our City, It May Work Because Of The Many Poor People In Our Community.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:49 pm |
  184. AUTUMN

Yes it would because you can do the dishes or something to pay for it.So if you have two dollars and your getting a drink and it cost's six dollars. Now if you have enough you can pay the right amount you can give some to the people that can't afford it.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:49 pm |
  185. Trevyn

I think it is a good idea to do. I think it might work were we live. Their are a lot of people and when people here that they will all be their. It would be interesting to see what would happen.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:49 pm |
  186. Kelsey

I think it would work. This is a great thing to have. It is great because parents in their children can go out and not worry bout the cost. Yet still pay for it in a good price.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:49 pm |
  187. Bob

It would not work where we live because too many people wouldn’t pay and they would just be getting free food. People here aren’t nice enough to pay for the food they take.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:50 pm |
  188. tommy

I think what they doing is good for the economy and neighbor. It help out the people that is it needs and those who can effort the bread can pay for other.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:53 pm |
  189. selma

It sounds like a really good idea, and if people did it for the right reasons then it would work. But sometimes people get selfish and greedy and that is what will ruin it. Also, i think it would work better in small communities because everyone in the community is closer and more likely to help each other out.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:54 pm |
  190. Marina

I think it would be cool for that to happen, but I think it would get a little out of hands.People wouldn't pay and then they would not work and the business wouldn't stay.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:54 pm |
  191. Yuseli

I think in the community where we live it would not work because many people would take advantage of it. This would only work in small towns.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:54 pm |
  192. anel

I think this is a good idea, but if someone does not pay then everyone wont pay and soon the cafe will have to cose down, but it will help the poor.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:54 pm |
  193. Christine

If you can pay what you can, I think more people would eat there. The next time that you have more than enough money, you are a good person to pay back. I personally think that St. Louis Bread will lose money because too many people would take advantage of not paying the price of their food. This system will work, but the business might lose money, since people don't really donate their money in this hard economic crisis.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:54 pm |
  194. Karen

I think this is a great idea that will help those that are in need. However, this idea wouldn't work everywhere because there will always be people that refuse to leave money and not help out. This idea will work best in smaller towns because the community tends to be closer in smaller areas.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:55 pm |
  195. Alex

Yes I think it is a good than that someone made it up.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:55 pm |
  196. Antonius

Our community will not be having anything like this, since our [local cafe] is too focused on making money. No one around here cares about poor people, everyone is too focused on work.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:56 pm |
  197. Amaris

...I don't think the "pay what you can" policy will work here. I think it's a good idea, but I think it will only work in small towns.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:56 pm |
  198. Jennifer

I think this is a great idea. Hopefully this works because it could help a lot of people. I don't think this would work where i live because i feel people would pay the least they could. It's possible a few people would donate a lot but i don"t think it would be enough.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:57 pm |
  199. Lebron

...i think the pay what you can is a great idea. It gives a chance for people too be more helping and understand others. The owners are good people for taking a chance on other people.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:57 pm |
  200. Kelly

I think that this is a very good idea, because it's not asking for very much .Just what you can afford.I think it really helps the poor too.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:57 pm |
  201. lesly

i think it is a good idea and i hope the restaurant succeeds, but i believe it wouldn't work in all neighborhoods like mine. people should have more places like this because that way the world would become a better place.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:57 pm |
  202. Bryan

I think the efficiency of this social experiment would vary from county to county. It depends on the community because over here we have selfish people who care only about money.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:58 pm |
  203. Casey

I'm not really sure that restaurants or cafes would let us do that like the cafe in St.Louis.I do think it's a swell idea what the cafe in St.Louis is doing.People might not have jobs and they do not have a lot of money to buy food when there hungry.Well there is a cafe that if you don't have the amount of money to pay for the food your ordering you can pay what you can for it.That is a very sweet idea to and I hope that a cafe or restaurants would do that to.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:59 pm |
  204. Suri

Living in the Chicago area the 'Pay What You Can' idea would never work out here. It sure would be a help for those who need it but there are those who will take advantage of it. So the business wouldn't survive. It's a very generous idea but it will fail.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:59 pm |
  205. Makenzie

Yes it does because so many people are wealthy where I live and few are poor. Most people only care about themselves and many people would help. The poor could get a job and the wealthy could help.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:59 pm |
  206. Adali

I live in the Chicago suburbs and i personally think by knowing how things and people are around here that Pay What You Can would never work out and they would loose business if they would try. Although, i do think that Pay What You Can would work well in smaller communities.

    May 20, 2010 at 12:59 pm |
  207. Damaris

I think its a great idea. However, that social experiment wouldn't work in my town. These businesses would be to concern to take such a big risk like. But Good luck!

    May 20, 2010 at 12:59 pm |
  208. Summer

That is a wonderful idea. I think many people are really poor and need a little extra help. It would be a lot easier to have that here in Idaho because there are so many homeless people, its sad. I always see them on the streets and on the buses... There was a guy and he told one of these girls, 'if your mom needs me, tell her that I live under that tree in that tent over there.' it’s a horrifying sight to see and it’s just horrible. I would love to see more people with homes, hot water, food and water. I think that would be nice to just be able to pay a little for a lot.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:01 pm |
  209. Kayla

I think we should because some people who don't have extra money after paying the bills or something else and they may need food. So that is why I think we should have one were we live! That is my opinion.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:03 pm |
  210. Christopher

I believe the "pay what you can" thing will work where I live mostly cause almost all of the restaurants are so darn expansive.I would like to have the whole "pay what you can" thing where I live

    May 20, 2010 at 1:04 pm |
  211. Macy

Yes I do because its not healthy for people to starve.I think they should have a restraunt around here. The reason i think that is because a lot of people around here dont have that much money.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:04 pm |
  212. sierra

It may work where I live but it might work I have a clue that it would.I do not wont people to live

    May 20, 2010 at 1:07 pm |
  213. Mrs. Schulte's Class

We think this is a good idea [in a nearby city] because there is a lot of diversity with socioeconomic classes. We think that some people would get a $6 meal and pay $20, which could pay for the meals of people in the area that normally wouldn't be able to afford it. We are 30 minutes away, and we don't think it would work here. Our economic classes are too similar.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:07 pm |
  214. Tiara

Around my area, this method would work. When people help one another, they get to know one another, and that truly makes a community. Using this method, people would be helping themselves and the people that they may or may not know. Also, since it is a donation box, you wouldn't be able to get change and that would help the company stay in buisness for a longer amount of time and help the people who may not be able to pay for their food.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:08 pm |
  215. Isaiah

I think this would be very good for businesses because if you don't have enough money you can still get food for less or you help clean the restaurant and in return you get a snack and can help their business as well.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:09 pm |
  216. Kenzie

It is a good consept to help them clean up or donate money.I think they should make a bread store that does that.I think it is a good idea to do that because it helps them. That is my opipion

    May 20, 2010 at 1:13 pm |
  217. Isaiah

I think this would be verry good for businesses because if you don't have enough money you can still get food for less, or you can help clean and in return you get a snack and help their business as well.

  219. Alexis

I think that the idea of "Pay what you can" will change the world. It is a very good idea and way to help lower income people. If the cafe's all over the world use this ,we could start a revolution and hopefully change not only cafe's but other places all over the world.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:22 pm |
  220. Sarah*

I think that they really need to find more people that will do this this will be great maybe a homeless person doesn't have money and they are hungry and need to eat. They will show the community that they really care.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:24 pm |
  221. Christian

I think it would work in my town because a lot of people are homeless and poor. It would affect my community a lot due that almost everyone is unemployed. And there is a lot of rich people in my town and they could help donate money to the poor and the resurant.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:30 pm |
  222. Mackenzie

I think it will work. I think it will work because people will payless. 🙂

    May 20, 2010 at 1:35 pm |

I think that is a good idea. I hope people will do help that.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:36 pm |
  224. Meraisa

This is a very good idea because people who only have a certain amount of money can spend what they can and they will be able to eat with the money that they have. Many homeless and low income families will be able to eat daily.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:39 pm |
  225. emanuel

i like the idea of the resteraunt is a very good one. it will help the people that cant afford food, but i do think people will take advatage of it but at least the resteraunt still gains money. but i think when the resteraunt gains enough money they should start putting more of these resteraunts all over the country.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:43 pm |
  226. Adriana

many off the families can't afford to pay to much because what if they have to pay the bank because their getting kicked out off their house. WE SHOULD NOT WAIST ANY ONEY FOR DUMB THINGS . many people can only pay small values and business will fall because many people are not working, it would be nice if the president will give us money to help families

    May 20, 2010 at 1:46 pm |
  227. Paulina

I think it may work where I live. Because my town has a lot of tourist activity I think the buisness would be a hit for people from out of town.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:51 pm |
  228. Ekpe

I think that it would work in our city. I think that it would be good for the community to have something like this. It is great for both the lower end people and for the higher class people.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:52 pm |
  229. JD

i thiink its a good idea nut im not sure it would work. in all places when ever there is some one trying to do something good, some ..... is going to try an take advantige of it for thier own selfish means.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:52 pm |
  230. weedy

it wouldnt work where i live because everyone here is too greedy and all the kids would give them a penny for a sandwhich and stuff like that. i am also one of those kids but i wouldnt do that everytime i would sometimes go over the price if i had enough money...

    May 20, 2010 at 1:52 pm |
  231. Shiann

I think that if you were a giving person and had plenty of money to spend you could donate more than more than its worth. I do think that that company would last in [my town] because there are many people that have the money. I know that if I were going to go there I would donate more than the actual value of the food.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:53 pm |
  232. Olivia

I think it would benifit my city because therer are alot of people have recently lost their job. I would pay more for mine [meal]. I think this is a wonderful idea. More places should have one

    May 20, 2010 at 1:53 pm |
  233. stewie

i like the idea because it lets people who dont have much money get food and those who have money can pay a little extra. i dont think they will lose any money by doing this. i wish monster would do this cuz its good.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:53 pm |
  234. mitch

I think that it would work in [my town]. It is a good town and we are very generous. I would go there and probably pay around 3-5 dollars for 1. it is for a good cause so yeah I think that it is a great idea. It is very cool.

  235. bri(:

I think that the cafe is a great idea. It's a wonderful way to show how a community can work together to maintain something that means a lot to them. With the goodwill of people in my town, I think that something such as this would work.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:54 pm |
  236. Charlie

I think it would be a great idea. There are so many people that can’t buy food at super markets cause they don’t have enough money, this is something that would be nice for everyone and enjoyable. Things get rough and people need this pick me up. Although I think it could also be dangerous in a way because people would just steal. Other wise it would be a marvelous idea.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:54 pm |
  237. Jeremy

I think it is a good idea to make it where some people don’t have to pay if they have enough and some people have to pay extra if they have more. And that some people just have to pay what they can. And it would work where I live. I like the idea, because there are some people who don’t have enough money to pay for it, and if they don’t then they can have them clean it up. I wish we had a place like that around here.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:54 pm |
  238. Caitlin

I think that it is possible for it to work where I live. Plus I think that it is a really good idea he came up with. It could most likely work anywhere and as long as no one take advantage of the ‘Pay What You Can’ thing that it will be in business for a while.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:55 pm |
  239. Madi

It is a wonderful Idea. There are some problems in that some people are not honest. Some people might thing “I’m hungry; the food I have is boring! Hey I’m going to go get a free meal!” And I’m sure there were also be people that have plenty of money to pay…. But won’t. Don’t get me wrong it might work out fantastically but, I guess we will just have to see how it goes.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:55 pm |

I think it would work in our city. This would help our community, because it helps everyone. It helps people with not a lot of money and people with a lot of money.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:55 pm |
  242. jessie

I think people would rip them off. You could lie and say that you don’t have enough money and not pay the real price. Or they could just run off and not clean tables and that means they got it for free. So, don’t think it’s a very good idea for where I live. It might work, but I doubt it would keep going.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:55 pm |
  243. kendyll

i think that its a good idea in a way, beacause alot of people cant afford to eat. but i also dont think it is such a good idea becaus alot of people that are cheap and have money just wouldnt pay at all. and i dont think that the resteraunt would make very much money, but i think its a nice idea.

it would be successful where I live. Because not many people can go to a fancy restraunt. Many people aroumd here have lost their job and are going through difficult times. So I think more places should have them. It would be a great idea and benifit many people.

    May 20, 2010 at 1:58 pm |
  247. Kacie

I don’t think that a lot of people would pay for their food. Money is tight right now, but some people might pay.

I think it would be a very good help for people who don't have enough money or just they don't have anything to pay their food. And this would reduce that many people and their families don't have anything to eat.

is a ggo idea of donate money to feed pople that dont have to take som food or also drink a coffe... God bless that kind of people.

I think it is a great idea, but one problem where does the money go. this information would be nice. It might just work where I live.

i think it is a semi good idea

I think this might work in my town it is unlikely but possible. p.s. Meow

i think its a good idea. but i think people won't pay what they really can. Hopefully they can keep it up and running.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:08 pm |
  257. Shelby:)

I think it is a amazing idea, although i think people are going to take advantage of it. I also think a lot of people will give what they actually can and be honest. I think some people will give more than it was to help the company stay.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:08 pm |
  258. joy

I think that in certain areas it would work but then in others it wouldnt because theres people that will leave a good donation but thens theres other people that will take advantage.

i think its a great idea but it depends on what metropoliton area it's located in.

  260. Siasja

I think this rule should not be invented because what if you had no money and they didn't feel like wiping the tables down but you made them do it.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:08 pm |
  261. Tyler

I think that some people with be helped incredibly by it, but that others will take advantage of the free food.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:08 pm |
  262. Emily

I think this is a good idea because it can really help people that don't have enough money for food. I also think that this isn't a good idea because people that have money will not pay or not pay enough for their food or enough to keep the restaurant open.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:09 pm |
  263. Alese

I think that it might work in their city and might in mine but then again there are people that would say that they don't have any money but really do.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:09 pm |
  264. Kathryn

I think this is a good idea, but it won't work everywhere. Not all the people that can afford to pay more will. I think most people will pay what they can, and it will be interesting to see how it all works out.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:09 pm |
  265. Cole

I think it is a good idea and hopefully people will take it seriously.

I believe that his idea is a brilliant idea, but there are downsides. It teaches people to be helpful of each other, but it may encourage greed and hoarding. I think the end result depends on the community itself.

  267. austin

well that is true kasie, but as you seen on the video they donate money to keep the restraunt running.cause the people that dont got enough money could get food.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:09 pm |
  268. Keri'ellen

I think that some people will take advantage of this. Alot wont, but some will.

I think that the St. Louis bread company CARES is a great idea! People who can will donate more, and make up for the people who can't donate. I think something like this would definitely work where I live. The area is full of middle-class families who are willing to donate. Just recently, we raised 3 Million dollars for our schools, so people here have big hearts!

    May 20, 2010 at 2:09 pm |
  270. Amy

I think the idea of a "pay what you can" cafe is great. It makes healthy food more affordable for some and is a great way for community building. In my area, I think it would work out fine. When such an idea is presented, people usually step up to the plate and are people of integrity.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:10 pm |
  271. Arshi

I think that this is a wonderful idea. People who don't have that much money can get food and pay how much they can afford. People who have a lot of money can eat and donate. The restaurant will grow popularity and maybe even make a profit over time.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:10 pm |
  272. Jason

I think the truth is, the idea may not work that well. I think people would just pay less, and think someone else will pay more to make up for the debt.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:10 pm |
  273. Ian

I think it is a good idea to have a restaurant that gives away food by donation. Although having it could also be bad because people might not be honest.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:10 pm |
  274. Ben

I think it would only work if the economics were better. People these days don't have much money to spare.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:10 pm |
  275. Dylan

I think this a good idea because i think not to many people will take advantage of it

    May 20, 2010 at 2:10 pm |
  276. Divya

I believe that "Pay what you can" is a great system because in this economy, many Americans are not able to afford a meal at times. This way, hungry citizens can get to eat, and with such a kind and caring system, they will pay back eventually.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:11 pm |
  277. nathaneal

I think that people will take advantage and go in there every day.
but some people won't some of them will pay there amount. and some will pay extra. so i think that it is a good idea.lol haha.......

    May 20, 2010 at 2:11 pm |
  278. Marcellus

I think it is a good idea that the price is only a suggestion, and not necessary. It seems to be working were it is, but it would not work here because many people here would rather wipe a table or sweep the floor than to pay for the food.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:11 pm |
  279. Navneeth

I like the theory. It definitely would help communities to offset costs on people who can pay them more easily.

But in our community, most people are employed and are not affected much by the recession. We all can already afford the food we eat. But we're an exception, and it would help everyone else.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:11 pm |
  280. Mani

Paying what you can is an innovative idea. The restaurant might even get more profit because people would like how they are run. They also might not have to hire clean up workers, which would save money. This restaurant is deemed to be a success, and should be a model for restaurants in communities across the nation

    May 20, 2010 at 2:11 pm |
  281. Varun

I think this is a great idea, People who cant afford to go out to eat now can, plus the ones who can afford it can pay more, it is a perfect balance and will make the community a better place.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:11 pm |
  282. Isiah

It would be cool if could choose your own pay but no.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:12 pm |
  283. Akshat

I think that the idea would work brilliantly in our community. With the loss of jobs, people would greatly appreciate the "Pay What You Can" program.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:12 pm |
  284. Aniksha

I do not think this will work over here, because people who can pay the full price will pay less on purpose.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:12 pm |
  285. Kathryn

I don't think that this would work for my community and everyone should pay what they can.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:12 pm |
  286. Farshad

I think this idea is good for the people, but bad for their business. People financially challenged will get support from the donations and people will get enough to eat as well. At the same time, how will they pay the taxes and bills for their building?

    May 20, 2010 at 2:12 pm |
  287. alondra

I think this a very good idea. This idea is well help so many people. With the money they give to people they could buy food a house and things they need. But it well also give them hope.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:13 pm |
  288. Jimmy

I think people around my area would give even more than the suggested price. Around here (San Jose), people are generous and caring. Not many people around here were hit by the economy as hard as people from other places.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:13 pm |
  289. Harsha

I feel that the idea of paying what you can is a good idea because some people may not have enough money to get the food they need. Also, the people that have more money will be able to pay more and help out the restaurant . I feel it would work where I live and it would actually get a lot more money than in other places.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:13 pm |

    May 20, 2010 at 2:14 pm |
  293. Dhiraj

I think that this may work in my area because the community I live isn't very poor. People here have money to spare and the economy hasn't affected us as much. There are many fundraisers that occur here and may people contribute. Another fundraiser would go a long way here.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:15 pm |
  294. jamie

it would work for like in pour areas where people have less money . it just one little thing the restraunts want make no money but i think you should have the restraunts for peopel it will losts of people save there money on gas and other stuff.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:16 pm |
  295. Aniksha

  296. Rebecca

it dependes on the street and place that i live in, how things work and the things that happen on my street. By the way i think it is a good idea.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:16 pm |
  297. KEVON

it would be so awesome cause you can make your own price like a burrito it would 50 cents&a dollar.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:19 pm |
  298. Chingo

The idea would work where we live because we have both people who have money to feed themselves and those who don't have enough. If the community is all lower income the idea would probably not work.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:23 pm |
  299. Simone

I think this is a great cause for our community. I'm happy we opened our eyes to finally realize people are going through hard times.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:30 pm |
  300. Radell

I think that woul'd be radical dude! Paying what you can is a great idea even poor people can afford it. The crazy part is what if people start taking adventage of the store. If i were you watch the customers at all times. 8-|

    May 20, 2010 at 2:30 pm |
  301. Sarah

i think that it is a great idea to help feed people that can not feed themselves. i is a great way to help the community. i wish i had it in my town.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:36 pm |
  302. Andrew

It's a good idea and I think it could work not only where I live but everywhere. It could help us a lot in a time where we need help. The only problem is the cafe might not earn enough to survive. Some people who have money might not give enough.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:37 pm |
  303. tatiyona

i think they should use pay as you can so what they do they earn money by the people giving money to them and for how hard they work so that A good idea.

    May 20, 2010 at 2:54 pm |
  304. Price

If the food tastes good, I think this idea will work

    May 20, 2010 at 2:56 pm |
  305. Watson

I think that this concept is a good one for mankind. One of my students stated that if you can't afford to pay a lot than maybe you could stay around and wash some tables. I think this is the mentality that the rest of the country should take to heart. You may not be able to afford a meal but everyone is capable of chipping in and helping out. AH YA!!!

    May 20, 2010 at 3:02 pm |
  306. Morgan

I think that this is an amazing idea because it encourages people within their community to help each other. Also, it's like the people of the community own a part of the restaurant. 🙂

    May 20, 2010 at 3:08 pm |
  307. langka

I think it is not fair and i love your show

    May 20, 2010 at 3:24 pm |

Well i think it's fair because some people have more money than others. And the police is cool pay what you can!

    May 20, 2010 at 3:27 pm |

I think it is a great idea but people would take advantage

    May 20, 2010 at 3:27 pm |

    May 20, 2010 at 3:34 pm |
  311. jossy

This I like because you get to buy some treats at the price thats more affordable whereas other cafes, you have to pay more than $6.00 probably for something simple like a cup of coffee.

    May 20, 2010 at 3:45 pm |
  312. cruz

i really have no interest in this and i think it would be good for the community i guess for the people who cant afford food they can pay a lower amount to at least get some food so they can eat so they wont stARVE and turn little and get sick and die like people for africa

    May 20, 2010 at 3:46 pm |
  313. mathew

I think it would be a great idea if it works , I hope it works. If it doesn't come up with a different strategy of getting money so (again) I hope it works. It is a great thing for the community and it makes a change. We all need something different in our lives. I wish the best for the restaurant and again I hope it works.

    May 20, 2010 at 3:51 pm |
  314. Stephanie

I think that this cafe is great for people who dont have enough money to pay so they can still get food but pay a lower price for it.

    May 20, 2010 at 3:52 pm |
  315. Jared

I think this is a fantastic idea. It is really good that people only have to pay what they can because then they don't have to worry about affording food at restaurant.
    Go Carl Azuz!

    May 20, 2010 at 3:55 pm |
  316. Corissa

That is a wonderful idea due to the economy and everything that is going on right now. I think that they should make a lot more restaurants like that. 🙂

    May 20, 2010 at 4:02 pm |
  317. Mr. Reed

i would achualy think that it mite work where i live.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:10 pm |
  318. Brad

This is a pretty interesting idea. It might actually work if people are generous and not just cheap greedy takers. This would most likely work where I live because not many bad things go on around here. Everyone I have met is nice and giving. I think this is an excellent idea.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:10 pm |
  319. jasmine

i think it will work but people who have money will pay less and t i dont think the cafe is going to have enough money to survive on its own.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:12 pm |
  320. ALLHA

I don’t think a pay what you can restraint will survive. Simply because people will go in there and think that they can under cut there food bill by 3 or 4 dollars. Most people now a day are trying to survive and aren’t going to donate much.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:12 pm |
  321. Freddy

We live in low income city. Our town would take advantage of this shop, and it would be ruined after the first month. Not saying its a bad idea, but it just depends on the people you live around, and your towns economy.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:12 pm |
  322. Matthew

I think that will work. With the economy the way it is, some people have been laid-off.Some people have very little money, too.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:12 pm |
  323. Jake

I think that the idea is actually a really good one. If people are generous enough, and really want the food, they will gladly donate to the store. It’s really interesting to see if the residents of St. Louis actually will.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:12 pm |
  324. Nick

I think that the company wouldn’t be needed in our community because the majority of us all have jobs. So the idea would be pointless. But if you go to post falls it might work cause of the low unemployment rate.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:12 pm |
  325. Valarie

I think that a restraunt that lets you pay what you can would do well in a community. If they liked what they were served then they would pay a decent amount for food so that the place can stay. If they didnt like what they ate then they could pay and make a suggestion. Also, people tha cant afford a good meal could go there to eat what they need and pay what they can. It would make a difference in the persons life so be able to eat what they want and pay what they can, it could make them feel better knowing that someone cares about those who cant afford a good meal.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:13 pm |
  326. Siringahh

Even though many people would take advantage of it, I think the restaurant would be good for our community. I previously found out that so many people are homeless in Coeur d’Alene and need food. This system would give them a chance to eat, and it’s very giving, poverty is something that’s swallowing America, so why not try to fix it?

    May 20, 2010 at 4:13 pm |
  327. Seth

I think that people will take advantage and go in there every day.
But some people won't some of them will pay there amount. And some will pay extra. So I think that they are doing it for the right reason but i don’t think that it would succeed

    May 20, 2010 at 4:14 pm |
  328. mike

I THINK THAT IS A VERY GOOD IDEA IT MIGHT WORK WHERE I LIVE BUT IT IS A VERY GOOD THING TO DO BUT SOME PEOPLE MIGHT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT AND NOT PAY WIN THEY HAVE A LOT OF MONEY SO IT IS VERY NICE TO DO BUT SOME PEOPLE ARE NOT VERY NICE AND CAN GET FREE FOOD FOR NOTHING

    May 20, 2010 at 4:14 pm |
  329. yvette

I think it is a good and bad idea. People who can't aford to pay a lot won't have to, but people who can do. The bad thing is that some people are cheap... and might pretend to not have enough and really have a lot. I don't know if this will work well in my comunity.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:14 pm |
  330. Jeremy

I think that it is a good idea. Is why is because some people like to buy what they can because it help them and also they don’t have to pay that much because everybody gets to leave with something. If you can’t buy anything then they will probably give you something because there sign says everybody leaves with something. I think that some people cant get thing s so they should be able to get something.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:15 pm |
  331. Anonymous

I think that this was a very good idea for a restaurant, but I don’t think it will last very long. Maybe at first, but after a while it will get old and people will just start getting lazy and just take food. I don’t think it would work where I live either. I don’t think it would work anywhere.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:15 pm |
  332. Lopez

People are not always nice. With just "get what you need and pay what you can," there are going to be people, mostly rich people, that will take advantage of the company. This is not a good idea. The company owners are doing something good, but it's only going to last so long until supply and demand overwhelms them. Rich people demand food, the business supplies food, runs out, and then tries to keep others calm until they get their supply back.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:15 pm |
  333. Brittney

I think if they did this 20 or 30 years ago, when people were all honest it would work. But now a days when we have people that aren’t always honest it would be hard to keep the business going. I don’t think It would be fair to the employees, too, because are they going to get paid for their hard work when the community isn’t giving back.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:16 pm |
  334. Carli

I think the Pay What You Can restaurant is a great idea! That’s actually the way that I think everything should be. I like the idea of not having a set price… Actually I like the idea of not using money at all, but trading skills or just doing things to be nice. I think lots of people would be happier if that’s how we ran our communities.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:16 pm |
  335. Anonymous

I think it would not work where i live. There aren't many people here that are in dire need of food or money. We pay the right amout for what we eat . It would get too old to fast and it wouldn't be making any money anymore that like give you food a way for free because a lot of people just have a couple cents and the bread costs a lot more than that.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:16 pm |
  336. Peyton

I think that it is a very good idea. And a lot of towns or cities should use them, and maybe not just for bread, other foods too. The only problem would be that some people might take advantage of the store. Use it for the wrong reason and take things for free even when they have money.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:16 pm |
  337. Jake

I think it’s a great idea. It’s a way for hungry and under privileged families and people to get food for a price that they think is good and one that they can afford. I think it’s also a good thing for the community and generous people who have money that theywant ot give to a charity. I think in some places in my town it could work byt I think that some people may not be as generous. I think some people may take advantage of this and not pay at all or near a reasonable price.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:17 pm |
  338. Hailey

I think that some people that live in my area would take advantage of a "pay what you can" business. It would be nice to pay what you can in an economy like this, but I think that people would just use the economy as an excuse to not pay for a full meal. There needs to be a limit for everything; it's what keeps businesses functioning. With a "Pay what you can" restaurant, it's risky because you never know what people will "feel" like paying.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:18 pm |
  339. Haileigh

Well, I think that this is a good idea for many reasons. For one, people can contribute what they can so, that means if they can't contribute they can wash tables, instead. This is also a very brilliant idea because what you contribute helps the restuant stay in business. The people that are less fortune with money can't contribute as much as the more fortunate. The people who have more money can contribute more.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:20 pm |
  340. Franklin

I've been to couple restaurants in my area where people don't have enough money too pay. I think this is a great idea and its to help the needy.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:27 pm |
  341. Renny

I think the idea would most definitely prosper. Idaho is full of people who are always looking to give back, whether it is religious or just kindness. I think that a Pay What You Can Café here in our little town would be just the right way to brighten up a day.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:28 pm |
  342. Sarah

I think its a great idea but I also think it wouldnt work. Lots of people are nice and honost but still some people with this opertunity might get gready and pretend to be poor or just barely pay at all. I do think it is a great idea because it shows that companys care about people and there needs, and that companies are trying to help people in this economy. The only downside is really there isnt perfect communities every place has people who can handle it and who couldnt handle it. So thats why i believe they would end up going broke in most places. I hope they do fine places to do this program and actually have it work because i think it could really help and change peoples lives.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:48 pm |
  343. daijahna

It's a great idea that people are donating money to the restaurant.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:50 pm |
  344. Nicholas

I think the idea behind [pay what you can] is to let those who dont have anough money to eat at other restaurants, be able to eat a good meal without having to worry about not being able to pay.

    May 20, 2010 at 4:52 pm |
  345. Nick

I think that this is a nice way to give to the community. On the bad side though i think people will try to take advantage of it by saying they cant afford it. Most people should know though that they shouldn't because the cafe is just trying to help people who cant afford. Lets hope they dont do that though

I think that this idea is the best idea to come!!! I would have to agree with Akshat about that people would greetly appreciate the "PAY WHAT YOU CAN "program. Would HOMELESS people be able to pay? If so would they be able to pay with the change that they find on the street.

Bread is good i like the fact they let you choose the price its like burger king "HAVE IT YOUR WAY!"

  348. Annalise

WOW! That would be an awesome idea!!!!!!!!! I know it would work on my community, and more companies I'd love to visit would stay in business! Also, it helps the poor!!:)

  349. Nash

i think it is a great idea for people that are getting laid off its cool to do that for people and people that are wealthy it makes them feel good that they donated money.

    May 20, 2010 at 5:14 pm |
  350. Chrissa

That's a good idea. I know it would work on their community. But, in some communities(sometimes even mine!) people would trick them so they get more for less.

    May 20, 2010 at 5:15 pm |
  351. Mindy

With so many people in financial trouble, I think the idea is wonderful! I believe the program would work in any community. I would pay more than my share to help others less fortunate, so I'm sure many others would do the same.

    May 20, 2010 at 5:18 pm |
  352. Bryan

I only agree with the fact that if you don't have enough money to pay you can help to clean the restaurant. Also, instead of paying more money than usual just leave a jar at the table for tips instead of paying more than what you payed for.

I think it would work were i live because there are a lot of people near my streets that have no job or that sleep in there cars, also it would help people with a big family , i think these people are very nice and they should really be blessed these are the tipe of people that will make a difference,so i think it would work and i hope it travels to other cities:).

I THINK THAT IS A GREAT IDEA CAUSE SOME RESTURONENTS GIVE TO HI OF PIRCIES BUT AT LEAST THEY CAN GIVE WHAT THEY CAN THIS IS A GREAT IDEA

  357. Lucy

I think it is a good idea, but people might be dishonest. Other than that I think it is really nice.

    May 20, 2010 at 5:35 pm |
  358. Genan

I say that it's a good idea for the less fortunate but some may take it as a privlage for free food. In some towns it may work great, but in others it may be a disaster. Although who ever came up with this idea is genuis

    May 20, 2010 at 5:47 pm |
  359. Alec

It should work that way. You see homless people on the streets that have nothing. It would be a great way to save lives of the homeless and the needy.

    May 20, 2010 at 5:52 pm |
  360. Genan

It may work great in some towns, if there is alot of generous people, the place might even make a profit, they might even need to hire alot of workers.

    May 20, 2010 at 5:53 pm |
  361. Allison

I think with this program you would have to be careful of scammers. It is a GREAT program for those unfortunate people, but some of the cold hearted might not pay when they have enough money to.

    May 20, 2010 at 5:55 pm |
  362. crysta

I think things like that can actually help people and give them food and shelter

    May 20, 2010 at 5:56 pm |

I think that it's a great idea but what I'm no sure on is if the baseness can sustain that because it is a big financial risk. If it does succeed yes but if it doesn't it would be a sad day.

I think the "pay what you can resturant"wont work because you never know when they can afford it or not. Also, it might work in some ways because are economy is very bad.Still not everyone is honest.

    May 20, 2010 at 6:21 pm |
  366. Arth

I think it is a great idea because you pay what you can so if you just lost your jobs then you can just come in and help out in the kitchen or wipe out the tables.

    May 20, 2010 at 6:32 pm |
  367. Ameselda

I think it is a beautiful idea. When it comes right down to it, all we have is one another, and we have to care for each other, and our lovely earth. It is truly a lesson in altruism.

    May 20, 2010 at 6:40 pm |
  368. Gunnar

I think that it is a creative and caring way to run a business, but it is also bad at the same time. It is great they are caring for those less fortunate but they might go out of business. I don't think this will work in my area because most people are living with what they need but there are always people who can't afford to feed their families.

    May 20, 2010 at 6:40 pm |
  369. leah

I think it would be cool. But if people are just abusing it i would feel bad for the owners. Because they're not getting the money they deserve.

    May 20, 2010 at 6:43 pm |
  370. Jack

I think this would be good in a small city lke Mattawa with not alot jobs right now. This will help out many people that arent as wealthy as others.

The mainstreet in our town is dead. Instead of being a happening place, it is filled with a funeral home, a bank, and an optical center. It has three really nice local shops, but thats not enough to keep it alive. I think a restaurant like this would be really cool, and it would influence more kids to walk down the street from our school to get a bite to eat with friends when classes are over.

    May 20, 2010 at 7:18 pm |
  372. Jenna(:

I think this is an awesome idea! It would work in Chicago because there are people in need of food around every corner. But at the same time there are a lot of people down there that can pay that are on business, tourists or just regular people that live in the city. I think that some people would really benifit from it and that The Bread Co. would most likley stay in business here. I think that it would be a good experiment in Chicago and would be a great thing to see what people over here would do with it!

    May 20, 2010 at 7:21 pm |
  373. Natalia

I think it would work greatly where I live. It is a great idea to have a food restaurant like this for people who can't pay much for food but need some and for people who would like to eat good quality food for a price they can choose (fairly).

    May 20, 2010 at 7:23 pm |
  374. Maggie

I don't think this idea would work in my area, because we have many low-income families who would take advantage of the freedom and not repay the business for their generosity.

    May 20, 2010 at 7:27 pm |
  375. Anthony

I think its a good idea to pay wat you can. There should be more stores just like that.

I think that pay what you can is a wonderful idea for our community and it helps with the donations that the restaurant makes, i think that the idea would be the best plan for the area where i live and would help so many people in need.

    May 20, 2010 at 7:47 pm |
  379. Makensy

I think that it is a great idea to make a cafe laike that so that people that don't have enoghf money they canstill eat something. If I were there I would go to that cafe every day!:]<3

    May 20, 2010 at 7:51 pm |
  380. Areeba

I think that the pay-what-you-can restaurant is a good idea, but it's really unpredictable. I think it would work in my community because many people would pay more than the suggested price, and the labor would be free because people who can't pay at all wipe tables and things. People may take advantage of the restaurant by paying less than they have to, just because they can. And running a business is expensive, so relying only on donations will probably be tricky, because some months are better than others.

    May 20, 2010 at 7:52 pm |
  381. jack

I think that pay what you can is a bad idea because people might act like they are poor so they can pay less!

    May 20, 2010 at 8:07 pm |
  382. Amanda

I think that a restrunt like that around here would totally suceed!!! In fact I think that it would do even more than suceed. I think this because my school's student council is bragged about by our principal which means that our student council is caring, honest and loyal. If kids can do it, so can adults!!

    May 20, 2010 at 8:23 pm |
  383. Mary

I don't know if this would work in my area. So many people are out of work, so it might not be enough to keep the restaraunt alive. But this is an amazingly nice thing that they are doing and i think it will really make a difference in their area. It could help some people who might otherwise not be able to afford food because of unemployment or other circumstances. I really hope that this place stays in business. I can't wait to hear whether or not the idea catches on!!!

    May 20, 2010 at 8:33 pm |

I think that it's a great idea to have a cafe only suggest what you need to pay. In my opinion, the buisness would never last where I live. I think that even if people did have the money to pay the fair amount, people would pay the bare minimum. Although, I would love to have tose kind of stores all around the United States, i just don't think the buisness would last very long.

    May 20, 2010 at 8:51 pm |
  385. Conor

I think "Pay What You Can" is a great way for people who dont have alot of money to save and for people who have alot of money can donate some money.☺

    May 20, 2010 at 9:04 pm |
  386. Bobby

This is an excellent idea, and I truely believe it will work for the better for not just Americans, but the world as well.

    May 20, 2010 at 9:14 pm |
  387. Carly

    Pay what you can:
I think this would be a very good idea for my community. Most people around where i live will pay what they can and even more to help others who cannot. But in other areas of the country this would be a very bad idea because some people would try to take advantage of this resturant, even if they have enough money to pay for there lunch. This will hopfully last for a long time and i know my community will alwys help there peers.

    May 20, 2010 at 9:18 pm |
  388. Benny

My teacher brought up a good point, if it was a rich restaurant, then it would be no problem to pay a dime on a twenty dollar eating bill. If it was a small family restaurant, then he would feel a little guilty not paying a full twenty dollars.

    May 20, 2010 at 9:19 pm |
  389. Andrea

I think It would be awesome if it opened where I live! It would work because people here are so honest, they would probably pay more!

    May 20, 2010 at 9:22 pm |
  390. Megan

I think people in my community would try to pay the least amount of money possible.

    May 20, 2010 at 9:29 pm |

I think it's a good idea but then I do think people will take advantage of it

    May 20, 2010 at 9:39 pm |
  392. Ryanne

I dont know how much buisness would be around my community but if you were to go to the nearest city then im sure it would plenty of buisness because there are many people that can afford to pay for their food but there are also alot of people that probably cant. I think the concept of the pay what you can is very good and I hope that is gets enough buisness and money to stay open but i would be worried about people taking advantage it.

    May 20, 2010 at 9:39 pm |
  393. Kaiken

A business like that wouldn't survive where I live. Although in theory it may be a good idea, people in my hometown will take everything and anything they can get for free, free.

    May 20, 2010 at 9:40 pm |
  394. Harley

I think the "Pay What You Can" will be helpful because of how the economy is right now. Even though they are givig money to charity I am sure they would keep enough to keep their bussiness running and I don't think many people would take advantage of it either.

    May 20, 2010 at 9:49 pm |
  395. yosief

    May 20, 2010 at 9:50 pm |

it would work where i live but today companies like burger king etc wouldn't do it because it wouldn't not make enough money

    May 20, 2010 at 9:55 pm |
  397. Alyssa

I think this "Pay What You Can" restaurant is a great idea. I am surprised no one has thought to make one until now. I think it would work in Chaska where I live because the people who can't pay would do anything to contribute to the restaurant, and those who can pay more certainly would. This restaurant will be a big hit, especially because of the economic crisis we are in today.

    May 20, 2010 at 9:55 pm |
  398. Andrey

I don,t know if it would have worked at my city but if it would people would rather clean a few tables to earn a meal rather spending ten bucks for a meal and the business would go out of business. I really wish it would happen but who knows if it's going to or not.

    May 20, 2010 at 9:58 pm |
  399. Amanda

No, this buisness wouldn't work where I live. Food would be eaten but, everyone in our town wouldn't pay. Just eat for free.

    May 20, 2010 at 10:06 pm |
  400. josephine

i don't think it will work because I know some people in my class would pay nothing! They wouldn't care. I also think maybe some people would pay money and even more money than expected because they care about our economy!!!

    May 20, 2010 at 10:12 pm |
  401. Aryelle

it may or may not work because some people are more selfish/ greedier then others. But there are always people who enjoy helping out in there community.

    May 20, 2010 at 10:37 pm |
  402. Erinn

I like the choice of what they did because the money they put in the charity box goes to people who need it most. Also the money they use they can buy food and help other just buy donating money! I think what they did was a great choice.

    May 20, 2010 at 11:02 pm |
  403. Huang

I chose yes...But I don't think the brilliant idea could work at any places. Cafe is a good testing ground for this kind of moral experiment because the money it needs to run itself is at a medium level, which means the restaurant can basically afford it if they get less profits than they originally expected. What if it was done in something bigger, a bookstore or a supermarket? Don't you think it's impossible for the owners to risk their businesses by testing humanity? By the way, I still see it more of a moral game than money-raising so as to sustain a business or help others. Maybe we can choose to believe in people's philanthropic nature and wait till we find out the truth. As far as I can see, the truth is that most people will just pay the bill according to the suggestions because they don't bother worring about what will happen if they do pay less. If I don't pay my coffee and clean up some tables instead, I still feel like being a freeloader. If I pay more ,then the extra will go to donation. I'm not sure why I should make a donation to a cafe instead of a formal charity or organization. And if the cafe wants to raise money for the at-risk youth, why can't it just sets up a dozen donation boxes. Do you want to test people's responses when facing a moral dilema or to extend a helping hand to those in need? Don't turn charity into a bet or something...

    May 20, 2010 at 11:14 pm |
  404. ALEXANDER

i would pay as much as a can to support people who value their customers

    May 20, 2010 at 11:15 pm |
  405. Marie

This would be a good idea if there was a way you could make it fool proof. Unfortunately, people would most likely try to take advantage of that situation and just pay a low price when they can pay much more than the suggested price, or at least close to the suggested price. Too many people try to get away with things they shouldn't now, though there are SOME people willing to be fair in this, I think this is a bad idea.

    May 21, 2010 at 12:12 am |
  406. Alexis

Yes this would make a difference but not a whole lot!! Even though you pay what you can people would take advantage of this. Some would eat more than their share and pay about a dollar or two. This would make no money!

    May 21, 2010 at 12:25 am |
  407. Francisco

I personaly think it would be better for the company and for the public. So the people could pay what they can to get something eat from the menu and don't have to pay alot without taking at vanige but on the other side people could even pay more of what he/she had to pay for the meal.

    May 21, 2010 at 12:59 am |

It depends on whether the town is rich or not.

    May 21, 2010 at 3:07 am |
  409. Nick

I think it's a good idea and also a great chance to test people's humanity. As for me, maybe I will give more money while in a good mood , less while in a bad mood

    May 21, 2010 at 5:50 am |
  410. Grace

No, I don't think that it would work out in my city because the same people would keep showing up just because the food is free. But I still can see why some places are trying to be helpful.

    May 21, 2010 at 7:50 am |
  411. Maggie

The pay what you can resteraunt woulnd't work in my opinion because the resteraunt wouldn't get any money so it wouldn't be able to stay open, but maybe they have a certain way to work out the money

    May 21, 2010 at 8:03 am |

I think it is a great idea! I wish more people like them would give and be helpful like that in my town but it seems like no one has the guts to try with the economy being so messed up. 😦

    May 21, 2010 at 8:31 am |
  414. xavier

i think its a good idea to do that but woundnt you lose more if the pay what they can pay and thats a better while the ecomy is down then when its up again there only pay like three dollar they be rich if you ask me and the more they get the less they get

    May 21, 2010 at 8:36 am |
  415. amber

I thinka pay what you can restuarant would do AWSOME in my town so people who cant afford food will not go hungry! Also some people will pay more like if thier food only cost five dollars they may give a twenty.

    May 21, 2010 at 8:44 am |
  416. Jorie

What is the point of that? Yeah, I understand the fact that they are going out of business, but... why have people pay what they want. If you think of it this way what if this person only has one dollar. How would they keep the business going, but letting them pay whatever they have is just stupid. Then what if nobody makes like a donation then what is going to happen? Use some common sense!!!!!

    May 21, 2010 at 8:49 am |

I think the "pay what you can" system is a good idea. It is helpful for the less fortunate and can even teach people about generosity.

    May 21, 2010 at 9:24 am |
  421. Justin

I think that a pay what you can is a good idea. I really like the part where if you don't have anything, you can wash tables. I think for homeless people, this will be a great help to all, especially in the economy.

    May 21, 2010 at 9:25 am |
  422. Kaley

I think it's a really good idea! Espically in these hard times. Also I like the fact that if you don't have any money you still get your food, but you have to help clean up because everyone has the fair share.

    May 21, 2010 at 9:26 am |
  423. Courtney

I think it's a great idea and could really help the people that can't afford to pay full price, but I don't know if everybody that can afford it would pay the full price, some people aren't always honest. I really hope it does well. I think as long as it gets off to a good start it could do really well if it's in the right place. I know I would definitely pay at least full price and the rest of my family would too. I hope it works.

    May 21, 2010 at 9:26 am |
  424. Allison

I think that the Panara Bread Company would be most successful in a place where everyone knew each other and their state in life so that they would all be able to help each other without coming out and trying to give someone money.

    May 21, 2010 at 9:26 am |
  425. Cody

I think where I live it would work because there is a lot of people going with out jobs

    May 21, 2010 at 9:26 am |
  426. Connor

I think that the pay what you can is a good and kind hearted idea. It helps the people who don't have enough money to get a whole meal. Though some people could try to get a nice meal out of it without paying enough. Other wise the idea should be one that is tried out all over the country.

    May 21, 2010 at 9:26 am |
  427. Tommy

I really hope that the store will work out but i don't think everyone will be honest and tell you if they really have the money or not to pay for their meal.

    May 21, 2010 at 9:27 am |
  428. Anonymous

I think that the place would have a ruff start at the beginning but since i live near Bowdion College which is a pretty expensive college so they have money and i think that would love to go there and maybe sometimes pay over the price and they would love to do their homework there cause it is quiet and calm.

    May 21, 2010 at 9:29 am |
  429. Emilie

If the idea of people paying what they can (or what they want to) works, the company will stay in business. I think this idea will help prevent hunger and bring communities together. The question is, how many people will be honest? If a café like this opened in my area I don't think it would do that well. There are already many cafés and restaurants where I live. If I were to go into a café like this one, I would pay a little extra each time.

    May 21, 2010 at 9:30 am |
  430. Allison

I think its a great idea to have that restaurant in a small town community, If it gets a good enough start it will keep running,I'm sure the business would go far if they really tried.

    May 21, 2010 at 9:30 am |
  431. Ben

I think that the cafe is a good idea because it could really do some good. But I also think that many people might take advantage of the opportunity. But there are also many good people who will pay more than necessary. I think that it is a good idea but will have a hard time staying in business.

    May 21, 2010 at 9:31 am |
  432. T.J.

I think the cafe has a good idea for helping people, but I am afraid that other companies will try this out and fail. Companies like Wal-Mart or Apple did not get so successful by having their customers pick the prices.

    May 21, 2010 at 9:31 am |
  433. Natalie

This idea of paying what you can is a great idea. Even though people could take advantage of the fact that it's free, it could help significantly with people going hungry in America.

    May 21, 2010 at 9:32 am |
  434. Emelia

I think that what this café is doing is really great! I think it is very important for everyone to get a good meal and not just people who have the money for one. But, some people may not be honest and have the money to pay for their food but decide to not pay any way. If a lot of people do that then the café may go out of business. I hope that they can stay open though because what they are doing is really good.

    May 21, 2010 at 9:37 am |
  435. Connor

It wouldn't work because you could have an enormous meal, but then only pay 25 cents for that meal. That would possibly shut down the business.

    May 21, 2010 at 9:39 am |
  436. jeff

i dont thin kit would work where we live

    May 21, 2010 at 10:00 am |

I don't think it would work where I live because people are cheap around here. And they would pay the bare minimum.

    May 21, 2010 at 10:36 am |
  438. izabelle

I think that pay what you cans is a great idea. this helps many people, especially the poor. People like the poor cant afford to eat at resturaunts and now they can. Also when the donate the money they could help hati or even the oil spill. These people are doing a good thing for other people.

    May 21, 2010 at 10:50 am |

I think it will help people with out wealth.

I say yes to have that restrsaut it will help losts of people who are on the streets starving to death like in san jose people are generous and caring . not many people around here were hit by economy as hard as people from other places.:)

    May 21, 2010 at 11:14 am |
  443. austin

I sure would be:) if I could get a free meal when i needed it.;)

it is a bad idea because if you don't have the money to donate.
What if you were paralyzed in your legs.:( 🙂

  445. Sam

I think it is an amazing idea. Because where I live there is a lot of people who do not make enough money to get food on their own. So if they could go to a restaurant and clean up the tables. or do the dishes to pay for their dinner, it would be a very good thing.

    May 21, 2010 at 11:30 am |
  446. Eugene

I think that's nice to care for other people. then being selfish with the money.

    May 21, 2010 at 11:40 am |

I think its a good idea so if sombody only has a dollar they can get anything they wont.

    May 21, 2010 at 11:49 am |
  448. bonnie

Great idea! I am worried that it will not work, but I hope that it does. If this restaurant is successful, perhaps the idea will catch on and people will begin to trust each other a little more.

    May 21, 2010 at 11:54 am |
  449. Katie

I think it is a good idea, some people may not be able to pay as much, though some kids may take advatenge my family and i would pay the suggested amount or above.

    May 21, 2010 at 12:10 pm |
  450. max

pay what you can would be nice beacuse theres some people out there who like to eat alot of good foods but dont got all that type of money to be paying for and expensive dinner

    May 21, 2010 at 12:55 pm |
  451. kyle

i think its a great idea because there are some meals that are expensive but i don't see it happened where i live.Maybe in time but now NO :[

    May 21, 2010 at 12:57 pm |
  452. Mitch

I think it is a pretty good idea for the people that don't have much money but people could take advantage and not pay the full price even if they have the amount of money they need to pay full price.

    May 21, 2010 at 1:09 pm |
  453. Nate

I think it is a good idea because some people cant afford to eat out and they still will want to .

    May 21, 2010 at 1:11 pm |
  454. Leanne

This, "pay what you can" idea seems great, but in reality, who is actually going to offer to help clean up? Some people may actually help, but others may just take advantage because it's just a 'suggestion' it's not a demand. Most young people especially might just go in, order, eat and leave without a single word. Others may be generous but, you never know. This idea may work out, but if people aren't honest, or kind, it may all go down hill.

    May 21, 2010 at 1:12 pm |
  455. Mallory

Most people in Michigan, Ohio, and all the other middle states would say that it dosnt really matter because it will never ever get to them. Well it kind of will because their prices will go up. But the people in Florida and other ocean coast states are struggling with water and other resorces. Soon the people win those other states will be.

    May 21, 2010 at 1:42 pm |
  456. Raven

I think it's an amazing idea, it reminds me of pinera but they are exspensive and this will give the less fortunate some good tasting food for a low price or non at all. i think in my area if we got rid of our pinera St.Louis wouldn't go anywhere for a long time.

    May 21, 2010 at 3:58 pm |
  457. Lizzie

I think that is a beautiful idea, and I would be proud to eat there, but I don't really think very many people who are well off would choose to go to a cafe where people can choose to pay or not because of public image.

    May 21, 2010 at 5:53 pm |
  458. crystal

i think its a great idea because it will help the people who are in need to get food and actually pay what they can afford and i think it will work in my town because we are caring and generous and actually care about the economy

    May 21, 2010 at 6:53 pm |
  459. Jonathan

It might be a good idea, but it will be very tricky to keep the cafe afloat! Sure, there are very generous people in the world, but there are also some very dishonest people as well.

    May 21, 2010 at 7:03 pm |
  460. Tessia

No we wouldnt even make a profit. Its just like other places full of poverty, some people are jerks(the ones who have money) and those who already had an impact from the recession months ago but still cant cope. So either way no one would pay a suggested amount that they should pay like they already do. But i think its still fair for others who do suffer from job loss and dont have money for food and are part of the 15 million and + people who suffer alongside with them.THATS MY POINT OF VIEW JUST FROM A KID BUT GOOD!!!

    May 21, 2010 at 8:18 pm |
  461. Annalise

personally in my town people would really be thrilled about it [people who cant really afford food] But some other people might take it for granted and go there for every meal not even thinking about the cause.......

    May 21, 2010 at 8:41 pm |
  462. Ryan

Its a great idea but theres always the a chance that a majority of the people will think that it is a place to get free food, which might not be able to get paid for by the people that do actually pay for the food.

    May 21, 2010 at 8:54 pm |
  463. Megan

I think people might take too much advantage of it. If they pay just a little bit but really have enough than thats wrong. It would be bad where I live.

    May 21, 2010 at 9:36 pm |
  464. kaleb

i think they should try more to fish and find good fish to eat because the prices went from like low price and now it is like more than i five bucks more fish and other food because we need sea food please do more sea food is awesome .

    May 21, 2010 at 9:41 pm |
  465. Libnan

i think it's very generous because it really helps the people that don't have that much money and are in need of food. But then again, what if some people do have money but don't want to pay? i think it will be successful and a great idea.

    May 21, 2010 at 10:38 pm |
  466. Emmalee

i believe this is a good idea and project because if you think about the economy , how it is now, most people won't have the money to pay high prices for food all the time , and this way they only have to pay what they can!

    May 21, 2010 at 11:40 pm |
  467. Jamie

I think the resturant in Hong Kong might work, as people here know how to enjoy life, and may pay according to how yummy it is. But in Mainland China, it may not work as well. The people there will pay as little as possible, as the people in China want cheap items with a good quality, and the resturant provides it, but the resturant would go out of business really soon. I think the idea of the resturant is good though, and it may help many people out of jobs, as they can pay what they can, and not pay the full price. I think the resturant should set a minimum price, or people would pay really a unreasonable amount like a cent.

    May 22, 2010 at 8:37 am |
  468. Marissa

I think this would be a good idea, especially for those who are in need. My state wasn't affected much by the economy, but I think they would understand for them, so they would be kind of enough to help the community. Caring people, are helpful people.

    May 22, 2010 at 8:42 am |
  469. Lauren

i think this is a very good idea i have never heard of that happening anywhere.

    May 22, 2010 at 9:56 am |
  470. Keaton

you cant make buisness like that people would always be like ill have it 1 dollar please cause of the loss of jobs

    May 22, 2010 at 10:20 am |
  471. Jen

I think it is a great idea. Therefore, people won't starve of hunger and giving people would give more to help the store.

    May 22, 2010 at 11:36 am |
  472. Naomi

I think that the oil spill has taken a turn for the worst, and it will hurt seafood restaurants, plants, and fish. If there was an oil spill near my area (Kansas), it would greatly be affected because fishing and stuff like that are important in and near our area. I'm glad that it's NOT near my area.
    -Naomi

    May 22, 2010 at 11:37 am |
  473. Alvin

I think that the fishing industry is greatly being affected by the oil spill, and I think that all the people that were involved with the spill happening should take a little bit of blame. This is awful, and everyone has a part in it!
    -Alvin

    May 22, 2010 at 11:45 am |
  474. Naomi

I think that the oil spill is getting worse, and taking its turn for the worst, too. This is getting serious, and I think that all the people involved with it in the first place have to share the blame. This is really affecting the fishing industry, and this is not good!

    May 22, 2010 at 11:49 am |
  475. Danielle

I think this is a great idea and it could work anywhere if people put enough effort into ensuring its success. I know i would be a frequent customer, as long as the food was good!

    May 22, 2010 at 1:42 pm |
  476. Beluga

This is a very good idea for a restaurant, and I would hope that people would be kind enough to pay extra for their meal to help the restaurant. Personally, I think this restaurant would not work very well where I live because of a high rate of unemployment and the recession. The restaurant would most likely go out of business shortly after it opened.

    May 22, 2010 at 1:46 pm |
  477. Shelby

Around here in (Illinois) I think most people would use it pretty well while others will use it for bad reasons, such as not paying then leaving.

    May 22, 2010 at 2:31 pm |
  478. Shelly

I think that the the "pay what you can" program is a great idea in theory, and many people could benefit from it. The problem is that, even with as many as many good, honest peolple that there are, there are just as many selfish people who wold take advantage of the system, ruining it for the rest of the people who actually couldn't afford it. Like amy great ideas, it just wouldn't work in practice.

    May 22, 2010 at 2:32 pm |
  479. Molly

I'm sure most people might agree that this proposal is a good one.
Although, what if people don't supply money for the company to stay in business and everyone decides they rather wipe down tables or do extra tasks instea dof actually paying.

    May 22, 2010 at 4:50 pm |
  480. Ally

That would be cool but people might lie about their price choice, and clean up a bit instead of actually paying a good price for a fine meal.

    May 22, 2010 at 5:44 pm |
  481. Amanda

this is a good idea but, where I live it wouldn't work so well. Alot of food would be ate, but it wouldn't make money. But it'll be very clean.

    May 22, 2010 at 6:06 pm |
  482. Ramses

I think that it will work, but not everywhere, because some people can take advantage of it, and they won't pay to help the company stay in business.

    May 22, 2010 at 6:25 pm |
  483. Cj

Yes it would because of the economy , a pay what you can restaurant would work great , a bet even some people would pay more than what the estimated price would be.

    May 22, 2010 at 9:09 pm |
  484. Marisa

I don't think it would work in my area.I don't believe that many people would pay extra. Some people are dishonest too. So they might not pay, and not wipe tables.

    May 22, 2010 at 10:03 pm |
  485. Sammy

I think this would be a very good idea because if you don't have money you can help them clean and wipe up and you can get food. This could be good in America for all restaurants.

    May 22, 2010 at 10:33 pm |
  486. Connor

Yes I think where I live because i live in a big city so somebody could get a good meal and help a business.

    May 23, 2010 at 12:40 am |
  487. Ladasha

I like the idea of paying what you can, but unfortunately in this economy it would be difficult to make a smaller amount of the money someone would actually give you. In some cities around the world this would be helpful but in others it would not be as successful. But because you have an option of the money you choose to spend, a certain place might have more customers than places where you do not get to choose the amount of money you pay, so a place might make the equivalent amount.

    May 23, 2010 at 2:38 am |
  488. Arielle

I think it is a great idea, because if you thought about it restaurants that make a large amount of money, with people that do not have the option to pay what they request, do make enough money. But at a well known restaurant, they might have more customers if they had the ability to choose the amount they pay. So both restaurants might be making the an equivalent amount. In this economy it is hard to determine.

    May 23, 2010 at 2:43 am |
  489. Kevin

Yes, it would not everybody has the money need to pay for food, if you do a pay what you can business people would keep coming back, people who don't have alot of money would go there and be able to eat. It's the little thing's that change the world.

    May 23, 2010 at 8:26 am |
  490. Desiree

I Think That It Would Work Very Well Because People Here(Groveport) Are Generous And They Would Want The Restaurant To Stay On There Feet Because They Are Happy That Someone Cares About People That Are Less Fortunate.....

P.S. Shout Out To Mr. Ling's Class

    May 23, 2010 at 9:17 am |
  491. Sara

I think it's a good thing because it's not a direct price, and the people who don't have money can still eat.

    May 23, 2010 at 10:47 am |
  492. ashley

I think that people could definetly use some place like that in my town . Sometimes people who have no money would rather work for thier food then just take it from a soup kitchen . Working for thier food gives them a sence of purpose.

    May 23, 2010 at 11:01 am |
  493. Charmaine

Yes I think its a good idea. The idea is wonderful because it can help out people who lost their job. So that the when the person gets their paycheck, they can pay off what they have to pay off and they can buy food and provide for their family. And they can have hope, faith, and courage.

    May 23, 2010 at 11:11 am |
  494. sophia

This is very risky. People could scam them or rip them off very easily. This shows that are couyntry is becoming more trustworthy, but the cafe might not be able to survive.

    May 23, 2010 at 11:19 am |
  495. elijah

I think that people could be the riches people in the world and come in in torn dirty out of fasion clothes and order 5 long bread sticks that cost 7 dollars , and pay for it by washing tables but they still have money in there pockets because they didn't just pay with the money in there pockets. And some people really can't afford the food they chould be ashamed of thereselves.

    May 23, 2010 at 12:34 pm |
  496. Jake

I think a pay what you can restaurant would not work. Because there's lots of cheap place to eat.

    May 23, 2010 at 12:40 pm |
  497. victoria

I think this ideal is a great ideal. This plan helps alot of people that cant afford alot of stuff to be able to have a nice meal once in a while. One of the main things though are people staying honest to this and not being rude and stuff about it and it can be really hard to keep a buisness going off of this so we just have to be careful and see what happens.

    May 23, 2010 at 12:47 pm |
  498. Shelbee

I think this is a great idea. I wish we had more places like this, i just hope that this idea works.

    May 23, 2010 at 12:59 pm |
  499. lydia.

I think nice doing that because some people don't have enough money to buy food .So if they don't money they can wash tables to pay them back by the thing that can do and if they have extra money they can give it to the store to keep in business.

    May 23, 2010 at 1:59 pm |
  500. Meghan

A cafe' like that would succeed in many places all over America due to poverty, and many people can't afford necessities like food.

    May 23, 2010 at 2:56 pm |
  501. poornima

this is a wonderful wonderful idea. it is a true litmus test of a community's honesty, integrity and generosity. Will the people who have money be willing to share and subsidise the meals of those who cannot pay in cash but will work for a meal – if it is successful – it is a wonderful example of "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need."

    May 23, 2010 at 3:43 pm |
  502. Natalie

I think it all depends on location. The Cafe's idea might not survive in a city that has been hit hard by the suffering economy, as opposed to one that hasn't had much damage. If the Cafe wants to spread this idea, it must first take into consideration the employed to unemployed ratio. Overall, I love the idea and would enjoy seeing it spread and influence others to care.

    May 23, 2010 at 3:55 pm |
  503. Annelise

A "pay what you can" restaurant would definitely work where I live. The people here are generous and nice, but I'm not sure what they would do in other places.

    May 23, 2010 at 5:09 pm |
  504. Erik

My neighborhood is filled with very honest and good people, so most people would pay most of the time as much as the price was. My neighborhood is also fairly well off, and for the poorer districts in the country, it may not work as well or at all.

    May 23, 2010 at 5:55 pm |
  505. Natalie

I really think that here in a tourist town, It wouldn't work. First, So many people in tourist towns are "Penny pinchers" and would pay very little, or as little as possible thinking someone else will take the burden off the restraunt. Seccond, people would take advantage of the food, and probably come too often for a lower priced food, and eventually wipe out the businesses, and just tear up the economy, even though the rescession hasn't hit Wyoming that hard yet. Just wait, it will, and the businesses would fail if it just suggested the prices. It may help some, but it wouldn't help. It wouldn't suceed here.

    May 23, 2010 at 5:58 pm |
  506. Ben

This idea of a pay-what-you-can restaurant is a great idea for any town or city. Some people may be less fortunate than others and may not have a lot of money. So, getting food by wiping tables is like a dream come true to them. Also, people who are very fortunate may give more because they may see as it is a way of giving back to the community.

    May 23, 2010 at 8:03 pm |
  507. Rehan

I don't think it would work her in D.C. because people here would take advantage of the opportunity.

    May 23, 2010 at 8:12 pm |
  508. Lary

Yes, because here in Philly people are generous and I'm sure everyone would be appreciative of the idea.

    May 23, 2010 at 8:39 pm |
  509. Sarah

i think it is a good idea to have a pay what you can, because people are short on money and need food.

    May 23, 2010 at 9:13 pm |
  510. blake

Great idea! But, people would try to rip off. Its tough to say

hi, Carl. i m a guy from Shanghai. And i have watched your video for a long time. This is my first time to coming up the Website. Through the comment, i poll the "yes" although i do not think the resteraunt will not be successed.I think the boss of the resteraunt is just for a testing. Maybe he is not lack of money, just for testing the human being when they meet this kind of free meal, what would they do...

    May 23, 2010 at 10:02 pm |
  512. Tiffany

yes because in my town the people would pay for the service and kindness they have got

    May 24, 2010 at 6:22 am |
  513. Jacob

In tuff economic times like these, we all need to lend a helping hand to one an another and things like this inspire people to reach out and help those less fortunate

    May 24, 2010 at 7:31 am |
  514. Weston

This is a great idea to help people in need but where we live I am sure that too many people would be paying much less under the recommeded price even though they can afford it.

    May 24, 2010 at 8:51 am |
  515. Justin

    not happening =D

    May 24, 2010 at 8:55 am |

    Thats an awesome idea.

    May 24, 2010 at 8:55 am |
  517. Mike

I think it is great idea, They are definitely standing up for the llittle guy, who doesn't have much cash on hand. However someone could walk in, ask for let's say, a burrito and a Milkshake, and only have $1.50. That could get frustrating. So it may not make as much money. But it is still a great idea. 🙂

    May 24, 2010 at 8:58 am |
  518. Matt

Oh no... no no no no no no.... these resturants are supporting the homeless!

    May 24, 2010 at 8:58 am |
  519. Sam

I think it is a great idea, but i wouldn't think that a buisness would be successful working on the honor system. Where i live people would probably say they only have so much money, when really they have enough for the whole meal. 😉

    May 24, 2010 at 8:59 am |
  520. Kyle

I think that it wouldn't work because most people don't usually bring a lot of money with them if they are going out to eat, but if they find out that they wouldn't have to pay for their meal in money, then they would stop bringing money with them and then the resturants would lose their business because they aren't getting any money.

    May 24, 2010 at 8:59 am |
  521. Will

I think it is an interesting idea for a cafe.

    May 24, 2010 at 9:07 am |

i think it's great because some people don't have a lot of money . so they get to pay what they can

    May 24, 2010 at 9:59 am |
  524. Shelby

i think it would work in Georgia very well because some people can pay a lot and some can pay a little I'm pretty sure no one in Georgia would not pay for no reason.

    May 24, 2010 at 10:17 am |
  525. Danni

If there were resturants that were "pay what you can" they would probably go out of buisness because everyone would pay about a dollar for a fifty dollar lobster or somthing! The resturant would not make money and go bankrupt!

    May 24, 2010 at 11:03 am |
  526. Darrient

i wont that pay what you can thing because some people dont have that much money and they need to do that in other states bye 🙂

    May 24, 2010 at 11:09 am |
  527. Ger

I think the "pay what you can" restaurants are not such a good an idea. They can have a lot of customers but i think that not a lot of people will leave tips. Also the people who have no money will just do the dishes and wipe tables. I don’t think the restaurants can run that will.

    May 24, 2010 at 11:34 am |
  528. kieandre

if you pay what you can the company might not have the right amount of money and might go bankrupt 😦

    May 24, 2010 at 11:46 am |

its a great idea for people that dont have the money to buy food.

i think that is an awesome idea of pay what you can... because in the world have many people that did't have to pay something to eat and that is a good idea to help poor people.... i think that is a good idea to put one of that kind of restaurats in each city to help poor people in the USA.

I think that it is a cool idea. Although i do not think that it would work where i live. I think this because too many people would take advantage of the situation. Its such a good idea but the time we live in i think it would be a bad business move.

i think it is a bad idea because people can take advantage of it!!!

I think it is a great idea because you pay what you can so if you just lost your jobs then you can just come in and help out in the kitchen or wipe out the tables.

  538. Lotus

I think that its a cool and different idea, i like it because there is room for bargaining for amounts of work to pay it off, sounds fun to me

  539. india

I think that it is a good idea because people sometimes can't pay what they say the can,

  540. Arriana

In my opinion the pay what you can resturant sounds like a thoughtful and generous idea on paper but as a business i dont think it will survive. ithink people would take advantage of the idea and only pay little of what is necessary and i dont see anyone offering to clean tables of food as they might see it as and embarrasment to them. The idea requires people to be thoughtful and kind and lets be honest not everyone is that way. it may work in a smaller town where everyone knows everyone but i dont see this working in a large town such as New York or L.A. If its a non profit organization how do they pay the employees?

    May 24, 2010 at 3:29 pm |
  541. Erika=)

Sad to say, there are some people in the St. Petersburg area that cannot pay for a full meal at the cheapest restaurant. I believe that if that restaurant were in our area it wouldn't quite work because many would believe that it was just a joke, yet most would believe that they may get a full meal for their stomach.

    May 24, 2010 at 4:28 pm |
  542. Lily

I think that is is a sweet idea but it would never work! Its as if you could eat icecream everday without getting fat it only works for a little while! In this world everything cost money and a girl can only eat do much icecream.

    May 24, 2010 at 5:36 pm |
  543. Theoni

I think that a pay what you can restaurant is an ok idea. It could go both ways. When people come to eat, they could just eat for free all the time. On the other hand, people could pay a good price for the cause.

    May 24, 2010 at 7:00 pm |
  544. Nico

they might get more customers but some people will hardly pay so they might have to close

  545. austin

that is awesome. i like it! if somebody went there to buy somthin or eat there, and they have like, $19.50, then they have the choice of paying all of it (which is a good chance that it wont happen.) or a portion of it, ITS AWESOME!!!!!!

    May 24, 2010 at 8:42 pm |
  546. Theoni

I think it's a great thing because people who don't have a lot of money can get a good meal for their price range.

    May 24, 2010 at 8:43 pm |
  547. Hannah

Having a resturant with prices that are suggested is an interesting consept. Though this might help people with little money feed their familey what do the workers get back for their service? If too many people come that can't pay a decent amount of money this will make the resaturant have to shut down. The idea is surreal considering most people are looking for a way to save money.

    May 24, 2010 at 10:28 pm |
  548. Hank

I think this is a great idea. Especially in this time of economic problems, and so many people being out of work, people need ways to get food cheaper. Also, if people don’t have any money, and they can still eat if they clean tables, this would be great in helping homeless people and people who can't afford to buy food eat. If this were to happen where I live, people would be very happy that in these hard times something is still cheap to buy.

    May 24, 2010 at 10:59 pm |
  549. Cameron & Quinn

It is an interesting idea. But it realies on the honor system and not alot of people honor that.

    May 25, 2010 at 8:09 am |
  550. Brandon

Its seems like something i would do but other people might not. I would just ask to work there for free if they were in a money crisis

    May 25, 2010 at 8:11 am |
  551. Alan

I think it might be a good idea, but the only problem might be is that people might not always be fair about it. People might lie. I think it could work in our area but i dont think its good for a big city like Philadelphia or New York but i think it's good that they do that and that if you have no money you can wipe tables oro clean up.

    May 25, 2010 at 9:00 am |
  552. MIchelle

I think it would work because some people may not have enough money then they won't have to go without because they can have they don't have to go without.

    May 25, 2010 at 9:02 am |
  553. Chelsey

I don't think this would work in my town because we have a large kid population. I know that a lot of kids wouldn't pay if they knew they didn't have to. The business wouldn't make a lot of money, and would probably go bankrupt.

    May 25, 2010 at 9:03 am |
  554. Jenna

I think that the cafe would work in my town because we have such a small town that there would be enough people would pay and keep the cafe in business.

    May 25, 2010 at 9:03 am |
  555. Randy

I think it would work because our town is very giving and the people who could pay would.. And those who could not, would not but they would wipe down the tables and clean up.

    May 25, 2010 at 9:04 am |
  556. Kaitlyn

I think that it might be a good idea for some places but for a small town I don't think it'd be a good idea because there is too many kids bored, wondering around looking for thing to do and they'll just get bored and go in and take your food. A lot. And not pay. DONT DO IT.

    May 25, 2010 at 9:04 am |
  557. Alyssa

I think that the pay what you can project would be very helpful where I live. This is a good opportunity in this depression to at least try it.

    May 25, 2010 at 9:04 am |
  558. Matt

I think that this would work in my town because we have a small neighborhood, and everyone in our town trusts one another. We have a trust worthy community. Doing this would be a good idea and would create money for our town!

    May 25, 2010 at 9:04 am |
  559. Sophie and Isabell

No, we do not think this idea would work. This is because most of the population is children and teenagers. Most teenagers would be most tempted to go in and take the food without paying or helping with cleaning.

    May 25, 2010 at 9:05 am |
  560. Erik

I think that this would work in my town because my town is fairly well off. Most people would at least pay the amount that was quoted, or more. I dont think that it would work in many other towns though, because people may be untrustworthy or really don't have the money.

    May 25, 2010 at 9:05 am |
  561. briauna

I think that the pay what you can program would work in our area in some ways but we have a large children population that would go in everyday because they would know that it was free and they could eat as much as they wanted

    May 25, 2010 at 9:05 am |
  562. Kari and Holly

We don't think this would work where we liver because we have a low population. We believe that most kids wouldn't pay and they would just take food. Most teenagers would probably attempt to pay full price but a lot of them wouldn't. We do not believe this idea would work where we live. 😦 😀

    May 25, 2010 at 9:06 am |
  563. Park

I think a Pay-what-you-can cafe would work well in my town, because it's a relatively close knit community. Most people know each other, and everyone would pay the greatest amount they can. It would help many people. Any families in need would agree to help the restaurant in anyway they could.

well lily it is a good idea but it is very helpful as pay what you can because poor people needs food if they find a penny on the ground they might be able to get something to eat so it actually a good idea it will cost less so
    pay what you can

I think its a revolutionary idea! I think it will be very useful to alot of people, but I also think it won't work for long, becuase most people who can probably won't pay extra, and a lot of people could take advantage of the store and get a lot but not work much.

    May 25, 2010 at 3:08 pm |

i think it is a great idea because poor people or poeple who dont have a lot of money. And, I have been to this restaruant and I am not a very wealthy person so I got to pay with the amount of money I had.

    May 25, 2010 at 3:42 pm |

Sometimes people who arent the wealthiest dont have enough money to have breakfast, lunch, or dinner so a restaruant like this is good. I hope for other peoples sakethat they would have more restaruants like these!!!

  580. Josh

    May 25, 2010 at 8:44 pm |
  581. Stelee

I think that this is a good idea but if you have one in your city or state that they need to help out if they cant pay. For example cleaning tables, or thee floors.

    May 25, 2010 at 10:09 pm |
  582. Alex

It would work in our town. The people are always thinking about each other and ot would show how much our community cares. It would also be a good experience to have in your lifetime. Although I can see why it would not work on cities. As long as people could pay with checks. Most people don't carry around a lot of cash anymore.

    May 25, 2010 at 11:26 pm |
  583. Mohamed

sorry i don't drink coffee in cheap cafe's who can't even hire a worker.

    May 26, 2010 at 7:48 am |

    May 26, 2010 at 8:48 am |
  585. Grant

I don't think the cafe would work anywhere and that cafe will soon go bankrupt. There isn't enough good people in the world. People would eat and just walk out the door without helping. It's a very good idea but it won't last long. Your business will get little to no profit.

    May 26, 2010 at 10:12 am |
  586. Devon

I think it would work until people start "cheating." I think some people will just say they dont have enough so they can get a cheap meal. I do believe there are people that would not do that but there are people the would. In the end I think it would go out of business. But it all depends on the honesty of the people. But it seems like this restuarant in particular is doing well, I guess everyone down there are just good honest people on that community.

    May 26, 2010 at 10:15 am |
  587. Ryan

I think that this is a great way to test peoples honesty and help out those who would like to eat but have liittle money. I hope thy make one around wherei live

    May 26, 2010 at 10:15 am |
  588. Lauren

I think that this is a really cool idea! It's a system that really brings out the best in people! If you expect the best then people usually do their best. I think that while it might not be a sure way to stay in business the fact that the business is still thriving is sign that it seems to be working. I definately think it would work in my city!

    May 26, 2010 at 10:16 am |
  589. Vi

I think its a great idea but not in this economy. People will take the chance and not pay, as long as they can save money. But what about the workers in the cafe? How are they supposed to make money at this rate. I don't think this idea would work where I live.

    May 26, 2010 at 10:16 am |
  590. Danna

I think that too many people in my city would take advantage of the free meal. In MN there would be way more people who would eat for free or cheaper rather than paying, working, or over-paying to help the buissness out. If we did have a buissness like that, it would go out of buissness very quickly. There could, however, be a variation on this kind of buissness. For example, you could get a meal for cheaper if you don't have the money and HAVE to work back the difference, or even recieve a card that requires you to pay or work so much before you get a free meal. I could definatly see that working out where I live.

    May 26, 2010 at 10:17 am |
  591. David

I don't think it would work. To many people are not honest now a days. To many people are not going to pay. We don't know if they can pay or not. After a while it will just go out of buisness. It would take a very honest place to work. Unfortunatly there aren't many places like that anymore.

    May 26, 2010 at 10:18 am |
  592. Quinlan

I think this is a marvelous idea. In a way, I think the people who work at these restaurants and run the place are doing the economy and the people suffering from it a huge favor. Pay What You Can is the perfect plan for people who are at a difficult financial stage of their lives; living from paycheck to paycheck, and after paying all the bills, some people that have lower income jobs have little money left for food and other necessities. If Pay What You Can is capable of staying in business, I would definately think it would be a great idea!

    May 26, 2010 at 10:18 am |
  593. Rachel

In the area I live in, this procedure would not work well. With many people in America jobless, they will always find a way around paying for goods and services. Now, with a suggestion given to them to con their way out of paying for a meal, everyone will take advantage of the offer. Some would even purposely come without money just to eat a free meal, slack off on cleaning up a table or two, and walk out. No matter what, for where I live, this offer would be just a bit to generous, and be completely taken advantage of.

    May 26, 2010 at 10:19 am |
  594. Tiana

I think this idea is a great way to help people. With the economy not doing so well, this is a great way to help people get the nutrition they need. If there were more restraunts like this I believe there will not be as many starving people in the U.S. Since there are so many people who cannot pay for food, the idea of having a place that can actually succeed by not getting the preferred prices, this will show other restraunts that they can do the same. With more restraunts doing this, people will have more of a variety of the types of food. Unfortunately some people may not be able to pay at all and they won't be able to help out around the restraunt either because of other plans they may have. I think this is a great idea for the econmy today and I definately think this will succeed in my community.

    May 26, 2010 at 10:20 am |
  595. Noah

The pay what you can system could work, however, it could cause people to pay more than they normally would. Also, if someone can't pay than you just wash tables or something. That would cause restaurants to go out of buisness because they won't recieve enough income. And then anyone that wants to save money will go in and say that they can't afford food, or that they don't have any money, just so that they won't have to pay. The pay what you ca. Idea could work in other areas, but I think that it would not work in my area.

    May 26, 2010 at 10:20 am |
  596. David

It couldn't work in my area. The reason why is people would just bring barely any money and cheat the cafe out of profit. It is a great idea just it wouldn't work in our area. Also this is an idea Ive never heard of or seen so my question is what other things do people with not enough money to make it up to the owner. Is it a non profit resteraunt? I don't know but otherwise it basically sends a message to everyone saying hey well find a way for you to pay us back and I think it's a great idea... If you're going non profit.

    May 26, 2010 at 10:20 am |
  597. Jay

I don't think this business would succeed. A lot of people would come to eat there, but they would not pay the full price. This would make the restaraunt lose money and eventually go out of business. So while many people would appreciate this kind of restaraunt, they would not be able to appreciate for long. This is why I don't think this restaraunt would succeed.

    May 26, 2010 at 10:21 am |
  598. Ryann

I think this is an extremely good idea. Right now with the Economy people are in desperate need of food and will do anything even if it means cleaning tables. The people that are doing good in the economy and have the money can help out the less fortunate and add some money to what they owe. If everyone is trustworthy and helps when they can the business could actually work. I think this idea is so new that people will be trying it out because of the originality that the restaurant cam up with. This idea could really work and would be a changefor the better. I don't know how well it would work where I live for awhile, but if that restaurant works then the word will be spread and I think lots of restaurants will follow.

    May 26, 2010 at 10:21 am |
  599. Emily

This is an interesting concept. For some this may work, but some it may not. With today's economy When it's at a low and many people don't have jobs it can affect the flow of businesses. It can help the economy when people have little money. Although there will still be those people that get food and don't pay. Also I worry the business won't stay in business for very long if people pay what they have, but not the full price. If people only help clean tables that does not equal the price of the food.

    May 26, 2010 at 10:22 am |
  600. Aiyana

I think it's a great idea(: I'm hoping this restaurant will succeed and flourish because it's a good thing to have in the world. Especially with so many people out of work and struggling for money. I think this type of restaurant would definetly work out work in my town and hope one comes along soon(:

    May 26, 2010 at 10:22 am |
  601. Matt

I think that pay what you can would work in my community. It only takes one generous donation and more people will be encouraged to donate as well. This way the more fortunate will donate which allows the less fortunate to eat for free. It's like a mass effect, the whole community will benefit from the resaurant and the homeless people could eat as well. However, you have to make sure that you arn't going broke so you should make a limit to how much free food someone should get.

    May 26, 2010 at 10:23 am |
  602. Ben

I think that a pay what you can restaurant would work in some parts of the state like where there isn't a very poor area. It would work if there was a mix of high, middle, and low class groups of people. If everyone in the area doesn't have very much money, then there wouldn't be enough funds to pay for the products and services. If the area was filled with people that had a lot of money, then the restaurant would break even because the rich people don't have to make up for the small donations made by the people with less money. I don't think they would ever get extra money.

    May 26, 2010 at 10:23 am |
  603. Jessica

I think it is a horrible business plan. Now a days people wouldn't pay even if they have enough money. People would just rip them off and they would totally go out of business. Though this a thoughtful idea for the people out there who don't have the money to pay for meals, it is just a really bad business plan.

    May 26, 2010 at 10:23 am |
  604. Amanda

I believe it would work. There are honest people, who will be respectful and courtious to the restaurant. There might be people who lie so they don't have to pay, but the restaurant won't have to pay as much to their employees. The restaurant could also gain more business because more people could afford the price of eating out. This is why I believe this restaurant would work in my state.

    May 26, 2010 at 10:24 am |
  605. Daniel

I am unable to have an oppinion at this point. I do not know anything about the affect of the recession in the city. Maybe this would be a better idea in shelters. I also would find it insulting if this idea came to my city. I also think that this restaurant may have complications in taxes as it tire ropes between non-profit and a business.

    May 26, 2010 at 10:25 am |
  606. Vincent

I think that it would in my state, even my city because my state is not very rich. My city on the other hand could because the city I live in is not very rich and we could use a store like that. The one problem that the store has is when people catch on they won't bring in money so all they have to do is wash tables and stuff like that. Still it would do in my city because we are some what of a poor city.

    May 26, 2010 at 10:27 am |
  607. Ryan

I think that this is a great way to test peoples honesty and help those who want to eat out but have little money. I hope that they make one near where I live because I would be happy to help out. I hope every thing turns out great with this new idea.

This way of where you can pay what you want might work in minnesota because some people don't have enough money to pay full price and some people do or even have more than enough money.

    May 26, 2010 at 10:51 am |
  610. Caleb

I don't think it would work I'm my state. My reason is too many buisnesses would be foreclosed or shut down.

    May 26, 2010 at 10:52 am |
  611. Kassy

No, I don't think it will work where I live. Too many people would go in with little or no money. The business would be high but there wouldn't be much pay for the workers. It's a cool idea, especially because there are a lot of people who don't have enough money for food.

    May 26, 2010 at 10:56 am |
  612. Maggie

No it would not work here. In Minnesota there are a lot of people without jobs so they would not have a lot of money to pay. The business wouldn't last very long because they would not be making a lot of money. People would be paying as little as possible. This would be a lot of fun and way easier for a lot of people to eat at and afford, however I don't think a business like this would last very long here.

    May 26, 2010 at 10:57 am |
  613. Lauren

I think that this is a great idea! But, I don't think it would happen where I live.. Not right now at least. I think it's a great opportunity for people who can't afford to go out to eat. And by having people do some work and help out when they can't pay for their food is a really great idea.. It wil help

    May 26, 2010 at 10:58 am |
  614. Nick

I do not think that this would work in our state. I think that because the economy is not good at this time. People would go and pay less or none at all. So then all the buisnesses or restaurants would go out of buisnesses because the workers wouldn't get paid enough and they would have no mo ney to pay off anything. That's why I think it wouldn't work here in our state.

The story is about if u don't have any money u can pay it off like clean tables or somthing. Or u can pay them back later for there meal.

  616. Rachael

I think that this is a good thing. I love to know that people are helping other people. I think it might work for my city. but only for The people in need. This Cinda compney should spread over the US!

    May 26, 2010 at 11:00 am |
  617. Khaliq

I think this would work because of the econmoy alot of people don't have alot of money. Also it would work because it would be helpfull to lots of people that don't have a good job. Well i'm kind of fence walking because I also think it wouldn't becasue they would be making less
money than they would be actually making if they didn't have this program.
Another thing I think is that they would run out of bussness cause their not making not much money.

    May 26, 2010 at 11:00 am |
  618. Julia

I believe that it wouldnt work where I live because then people would abuse the fact that's it free and it wouldn't be worth it anymore to go to restaurants.

    May 26, 2010 at 11:01 am |
  619. Calvin

Where I live this actually might not work. This is true because in my neighborhood everyone has a good job and can pay the price that the restaraunt giives you. The problem that would be created by this in my neiborhood would be people will try to free load the restaraunt and not pay anything. The other ronlem that might arise is that everyone may pay, but not enough to keep the restaraunt going. I realy think that the decision is all up to the restaraunt.

    May 26, 2010 at 11:02 am |
  620. Kitana

Yes and no that I agree it would work because if you think about it, people would get to eat for a low cost, but wouldn't have to do much work. On the other hand the workers won't get to do much work, and when you think about it they won't get payed because other people are doing their jobs for them and they aren't. So that's why I think it doesn't but does work.

    May 26, 2010 at 11:02 am |
  621. Alex

I think it would succeed cause alot of people are short on money and like to go out to eat. just like everyone else. But then people might ripe it off. I would support It cause it could help out alot of People, but then it could be ripped of a ton of money. And be put out of buisness.

    May 26, 2010 at 11:02 am |
  622. Maricarmen

Well I think it's a great idea to do that because the economy is bad right know & leaving many homeless people on the streets ,no home no food & more resturants should be like this it would really help many people out there.

    May 26, 2010 at 11:03 am |
  623. Robert

I think it would work were I live because some people don't have enough money and some people want to eat at resturaunts too.And some people need work.

    May 26, 2010 at 11:03 am |
  624. Dvonte

I think it would work bcecause people these days don't have money due to the economy. Also people without homes can't afford food and this is a good way to help those people when others won't. They may make alot of money because of the tips they may get. There will also be alot of job oppritunities because they have alot of options on the resteraunt. lastly who wouldn't go to a resteraunt where you can pay what can you can?!

    May 26, 2010 at 11:04 am |
  625. Tayler

No , I don't think that those suggestions would work around where I live . In our sociey if you don't have enough money you won't be able to purchase what you want to buy . They don't let you stay and clean off tables or do dishes .. They simply won't let you buy the product . If you don have the amount you need they don let you just pay what you have , you need to hav the right amount . Yes companies will let you pay extra to support there place , because of course they want more money .

    May 26, 2010 at 11:04 am |
  626. Lauren

I think that this is a great idea! But, I don't think it would happen where I live.. Not right now at least. I think it's a great opportunity for people who cannot afford to go out to eat. By having people work and help out when they can't pay is a really great idea! I think they should start to have more resaturants like this one.

    May 26, 2010 at 11:05 am |
  627. Alex

I don't think it would work. I don't think it would work because people need to be paid . It also wouldn't work because if people can't pay when would they work?....it also wouldn't work because if they can't get paid people would lose their jobs. People would also not pay for things if they can't pay for food

    May 26, 2010 at 11:07 am |
  628. Banin

That would be an exclence experence to try that but I know where i live that would never happen.
If we do that I think we would never have starving children and adults beuse all the have to do is go there and eat and then clean tabels or whatever they tell you to do.

    May 26, 2010 at 11:07 am |
  629. Brandon

I know that for a fact that it would not work where I live. If people could pay what they
want to, the restaurant would go broke but at least people less fortunate than us could eat and have a good breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They would have to make it so it is not a buffet but a place to eat with regulations to not go broke.

    May 26, 2010 at 11:08 am |
  630. aleena

    Seeing that my community has a lot of kids and college students, it would be extreamly successful. Many students would most likely enjoy this because they could "have their cake and eat it too". This would provide students a place to hang out, do homework, study, eat or relax in reasonable exspences. By reasonable exspences I mean that since most students do not have the greatest income or have minimum wage and are enable to Pay for there food, they can always stay for a little while after to help out (;

    May 26, 2010 at 11:10 am |
  631. Bucky

The cafe will let u pay wat u can. But if can't u hav to pay if off buy cleaning the place or washing tables. U can pay any price but u hav to do something after. This probly would work in my city cause people don't really hav jobs.

    May 26, 2010 at 11:11 am |
  632. Jack

I think that is a really cool idea because if you help clean up you are making other peoples jobs easier by cleaning up your own mess

    May 26, 2010 at 11:29 am |
  633. Eryn

I think that would be a good idea in alot of places, not just my area because the economy is low and people are losig their jobs and they should be able to eat good food if they don't have much money!!

    May 26, 2010 at 11:32 am |
  634. Chan

I think that college is a good idea because you could learn about more stuff

    May 26, 2010 at 11:32 am |
  635. Mikayla

Yes I think it would because some people don't have enough money to go to restaurants because it is to expensive. If they had a pay what you can one anyone can go and have food.

    May 26, 2010 at 11:35 am |
  636. Banin

I like the idea but it wouldn't work because people could say they have no money and just wipe some tables but the restaurant won't make any money.

    May 26, 2010 at 11:35 am |
  637. Aaron

I think it's a good idea because it would help the community become a better place and that would makes our community nicer.

    May 26, 2010 at 11:35 am |
  638. Guadalupe

I think this is a very cool way to run a cafe but I think people might take advantage of it if they never have money the Cafe will not have enough money to be up and running.

    May 26, 2010 at 11:37 am |
  639. Paul

A pay-what-you-can restaurant would not succeed where I live. People are just too greedy!

    May 26, 2010 at 12:21 pm |
  640. Tristan

In this economy, people are always looking for ways to save money and conserve what they have. I think that this concept would work in most areas.

    May 26, 2010 at 12:40 pm |
  641. LORENZO

YES IT IS FAILING OUR COLLEGE CHOICES. ONE IS BECAUSE WHEN YOUR CHILD SAYS HE IS GOING TO COLLEGE, YOU MIGHT THINK HE IS BUT HE IS ACUALLY GOING TO SPEND ALL OF THAT MONEY ON THINGS HE DESIRES AND WHAT HE DESIRES IS MAYBE NOT WHAT YOU WANT TO HAPPEN. SO I ADVISE YOU NOT TO GIVE MONEY TO YOUR KID UNTIL YOU KNOW FOR SURE THAT HE IS GOING TO COLLEGE FOR SURE. SO I THINK YOU SHOULE BE THE ONE WHO PICKS YOUR CHILDS COLLEGE. AND PICK A GOOD ONE TO SO HE CAN GET AS MUCH MORE EDUCATION AAS HE CAN ANND STAY IN THERE AS LONG AS HE WANTS TO. MAKE SURE HE WILL BE ABLE TO LIK,E IT WHERE YOLU ARE SENDING HIM. MAKE SURE HE GETS A LOT OF FRIEKNDS AND MAKE SURE HE HAS ENOUGH FOOD TO EAT. AND A LOT OF SUPPLY OF FOOD. AND ALWAYS BE THERE FOR HIM WHEN HE NEEDS YOLU TO BE THERE. AND YOU SHOULD ASK HIM WHAT SUBJECTS HE WANT TO TAKE . AND AT LAST MAKE SURE HE CAN GET IN WITHOUT HAVING TO PAY OVER 2,000!:)

    May 26, 2010 at 1:20 pm |
  642. Ellie

i do not think that is a good idea because everybody would say "i dont have enough money"

    May 26, 2010 at 1:42 pm |
  643. Neha

I will work because they have the ability to help other people.

    May 26, 2010 at 1:48 pm |
  644. Jesse A

I believe this is a wonderful idea, but I don't believe it will work out for the restaurant because there is to many bad people out there who would take advantage of what they are doing there.

    May 26, 2010 at 1:48 pm |
  645. Kaylin

I think this would work in my area. People would work for food or help the resturant. People could help with the economy or work for their food. People who do this are making a really big decision. People should think about doing this!

    May 26, 2010 at 1:50 pm |
  646. Sondra

I think it could work. It would be much easier then having to borrow money from a bank. I think many more people would like doing this, some others may not agree. I guess it depends on the person.

    May 26, 2010 at 1:53 pm |
  647. Deanna

I think it's cool they are doing this. At the same time it's not such a great idea because people could just say they have no money. The restaruant could be easily put out of buisness. Instead they could just lower prices because then they'd get more customers.

    May 26, 2010 at 1:53 pm |
  648. Emma

This time I won't sya "well". So, um, people need money, but they also need FOOD. Which one is more important? No one really knows. You need money to get food, and food to live. BUt saving money is good, so paying only what you can is good. But rich people don't want to pay extra, but they don't have to. It will seem unfair to the "poor" people if the "rich" people don't pay as much as expected and they are actually paying as much as they can. 😛 😦

    May 26, 2010 at 1:53 pm |
  649. Jake

Great idea! Although I don't think it would work where I live because people might not be trustworthy enough and might lie about how much money they have. I believe that this is good because many poeople don't have a good enough income to pay. This is a great idea and I think more and more restarants will follow it.

    May 26, 2010 at 1:54 pm |
  650. Hua

I think that it will work because some people might not have money for the foods that they order or they think that the foods are expensive and they go over to another restrant to eat that's more cheper then the first one that they went to so I think that the plan will work.

    May 26, 2010 at 1:54 pm |
  651. Jesse

I don't believe that this idea will work, because there is too many bad people out there who would take advantage of the restaraunt. But A for trying a wonderful new idea!

    May 26, 2010 at 1:54 pm |
  652. Eric

I don't think it could i livewere I live because people will pay the lowest price they can and. the restraunt will not have enough money to stay in bussiness. They could stay in bussiness if some one donated money to them or got funded by a orngization.

    May 26, 2010 at 1:55 pm |
  653. Leah

I think it would not work because where I live there are too many cafe , and too many people would do it, there would be no more jobs and too over crowded. I think they should just pay for what u got and if you can't pay for it, then you shouldn't get it. But then again we wouldn't have alot of hungry people because they could just work of there food they got.

    May 26, 2010 at 1:55 pm |
  654. Max

People might feel guilty about paying to little and pay a lot more than the actual price. Then again, if you don't pay you have to work for a short time. I heard about this in Portland. I heard one man paid $40 for a steak!

    May 26, 2010 at 1:56 pm |
  655. Hope

I don't think it would work now because people would be tocheap about way they buy. Or to many people who dont have alot of money would take advantage of them charging like that. So they would only last alittle with how our economy is.

    May 26, 2010 at 1:56 pm |
  656. Jon

It wouldn't work for me because I'm not that kind of guy, but I'm sure it would work fo tha peopl who live in my community because of how tha economy is today in the world and how in the article , the price at jus suggestions which is really good ! Becaus like if you hve no money you could do sme work and get food for free I guess.

    May 26, 2010 at 1:57 pm |
  657. Amanda

Yes I think it's a good idea to Do that. A lot of people might not have enough money but atleast they have a job. It would also work because the economy is really bad and the more jobs is better! This would be a good idea for my city!

    May 26, 2010 at 1:57 pm |
  658. Clare

I think having a "pay what you can" restaurant would work whare I live up to a point. If most people payed the sugested amount the restaurant would stay in buisnes. If people didn't pay much and toke advantage of the restaurant I don't think they would stay in buisnes. It all depends on how well of a economy we have, because that determines how much people would pay. That is what I think would happen if there was a "pay what you can" restaurant whare I live.

    May 26, 2010 at 1:59 pm |
  659. Nabil

I think that it would be an interesting idea and it might or might not work. Either way it doesn't matter in some way it would me useless becuase if it's a fast food resturant this rule would be abused no one would come to eat and then the busniess would go curropt and close done on the other hand everyone comes in and no one pays just cleans and that's good but then no money is comeing in so either way no money and that means no more fast food yet that's just where I live. So still all in all it's worth a try unless ur not up for it Witch some states would not be over all it's a good idea and should be alest be thought over and processesd and thought over till then bye Carl

    May 26, 2010 at 2:00 pm |
  660. Emily

This plan would not work where I live. My aunt owns her own buisness and if she gave her costumers the choice to name their price she wouldn't be able to keep up on supplies demands. It would not be balanced where I live. The money the don'tuse will go to another buisness and suggest the same plan and it would keep going and soon all of the buisnesses will use the plan. A lot of the buisnesses money goes to the government and that would not be good.

    May 26, 2010 at 2:02 pm |
  661. Jesus

I think it is a good idea. But I think it will not work in my area. I think it will help a lot of people. If people dont have enough to pay the restaurant will go bankrupt. Also if people do have enough money and don't leave money the restaurant will also go bankrupt.

    May 26, 2010 at 2:03 pm |
  662. Amanda

Being from a town with over 1300 restaurants (Myrtle Beach, SC), the lack of prices would prevent competition between all of the local restaurants. Tourists will not be able to make the connection with the business owner, by leaving a good tip, paying what they can, etc.

    May 26, 2010 at 3:59 pm |
  663. Casie

This is a really good idea! It could help so many people. The jobless and homeless could really benefit from restaurants like this. Honestly, I think it could work anywhere. If someone tries hard enough, anything could work. If my town had a restaurant like this, I am sure it would do very well. People now a days need all the help they can get.

    May 26, 2010 at 4:06 pm |
  664. Heaven Diana And Anita

No everyone here shouldent because we would probably put down very low amounts of money then the reasteraunt wouldnt recive very much money and they would go out of business

    May 26, 2010 at 6:29 pm |
  665. Eliane

i think its a bad idea because people can just take it and go without paying and be really rude

    May 26, 2010 at 8:51 pm |
  666. Ray-Von

I think it's a great idea for people who want coffee and don't have enough money to pay for it

I think the recession will affect us alot when we go to college. It will be very tough on us to go to a good college for the sake of money. When I'm a senior, I will be Going to my state college for 4 years and will be in the medical or culinary field. It would be hard for me to go out of state though.

    May 27, 2010 at 9:36 am |
  668. Jorge

I think this is a good and a bad Idea because some people may fake that they don't have money and have food for free but it's good because of the people that actually don't have alot of money.

    May 27, 2010 at 10:58 am |
  669. Abby

I think it would work where I live because alot of people don't have much money . and so they could clean tables or something . it would help people because if they don't have enough money to buy food for here family then they could just go there . but then if people have more money then some people they could give the restaurant money .

    May 27, 2010 at 10:58 am |
  670. Lexii

    Yes this would
work cause then ppl would not have to pay as much as your amount is and ppl ,could actually go out for celebrations and have celebrations .!?

    May 27, 2010 at 10:59 am |
  671. Tevin

I wish my school did this. I wouldn't have to pay for cookies 🙂

    May 27, 2010 at 11:00 am |
  672. Dana

Sure it would work pretty well here where I live. If my school did that I would be washing the table every day for cookies 🙂 ahaha. It would probably be nice working there too!

    May 27, 2010 at 11:02 am |
  673. Brett

I think it's a good idea although you should have set amount of money, because repaying with labor dosen't make up for the lost profit of the consumer not paying for their meal.

    May 27, 2010 at 11:02 am |
  674. Evelyn

I think that's an idea that would work because lots of people can't pay for what they want and with that, it could help the economy especially people who don't have jobs:)

    May 27, 2010 at 11:03 am |
  675. Charity

I think that it's a good idea but then again people can take advantage of this priveledge. But it's a good thing and maybe certain resturants should do it but if you don't have the money to eat in expensive resturants why bother? (:

    May 27, 2010 at 11:05 am |
  676. Max

I think people around the world should help. Hey if they could help haiti, why not them??

    May 27, 2010 at 11:06 am |
  677. Denise

I think that's a verry good idea because some people don't have the resourses to pay some things and that's good idea ,and it's going be really nice of the people that have money leave to the company.I think these is a really kind thing to do (:

    May 27, 2010 at 11:07 am |
  678. Caleb

I personaly think this would be beniditial due to the fact that with. The falling economy and homeless rates sky rocketing it would be an easy way to have nice meal withouthaving to cost a fortune so I think it's an amazing idea!

    May 27, 2010 at 11:09 am |
  679. Austin

I think it would be a great idea to do that for people that don't have alot Of money.I think this would be a great idea and it would help out.

    May 27, 2010 at 11:11 am |
  680. Bryan

Yes, the recession would effect me if I would went to college now. Or if it still does when I graduate from highschool. It would effect me by like how the things would be more higher price and more difficult to get in schools with the things I want to be as.

    May 27, 2010 at 11:43 am |
  681. Kevin

Maybe but with the things are today I don't think so . The economy is so bad .

    May 27, 2010 at 12:40 pm |
  682. Davidson

I think that it's a good idea. Unfortunatly I dont think that It would help the restaurants in my town . I know that 70% of the people would pay very low which would force the restaurants to go bankrupt.
This idea of " Pay what you can" would most likely benefit the customers than the restaurants.
People who do have money would pay the same as peolpe who dont have money. Now-a-days, people are just too selfish and greedy.

    May 27, 2010 at 12:52 pm |
  683. emily

i think that it is a good idea because many people dont have money and maybe go for it all the time...

    May 27, 2010 at 1:39 pm |
  684. KT

I think it would be a good idea because where i live a lot of people are out of jobs and are homless

    May 27, 2010 at 3:58 pm |
  685. Kalyn

It is a bad idea, but also a good idea. It is a bad idea because people would scam the business just to get more for their money. It is also a good idea for people that actually don't have enough money to buy something. I think the business should put a limit on how much you are allowed to purchace with a certain amount of money, so you dont have someone buying $15 worth of stuff for $5 because it wouldn't be fair to the business and the business wouldn't make a large profit, but it is a way to help people.

    May 27, 2010 at 9:23 pm |
  686. Lauren

I think that is an interesting way of starting a business. I think that you could put a little more of a boundry when giving people a discount on food. I think it's a good start to something that might catch on.

    May 28, 2010 at 9:25 am |
  687. Katie

I would hope that this idea would be able to work where I live. This new pricing plan could really help people who are in need. Those people that are able to pay more would most likely try to help the restaurant stay in business. I believe that people in my neighborhood would totally support this idea. It would help people receive full, healthy meals for not a lot of money. I think this would help my neighborhood's economy. In my opinion, this would be something that woud work in my neighborhood.

    May 28, 2010 at 9:28 am |
  688. Kyra

I think this is a great idea and I believe that this would work where I live. In these tough times anything that helps people I think is a good thing. I know if I didn't have enough money I would go to this place and work it off. I just can't believe that we haven't thought of something like this sooner. I would definitely donate money to help this restaurant stay in business. America we have found a solution!

    May 28, 2010 at 9:29 am |
  689. Barrett

I think this is a good idea. All people aren't greedy and will leave a good amount of money to help the buisness out. I think this could work where I live because we have good people living there.

    May 28, 2010 at 9:37 am |
  690. siasja

i think it is A BAD IDEA BECAUSE IF YOU DONT HAVE ANY MONEY U HAVE TO WIPE THE TABLES FOR A FREE MEAL:(

    May 28, 2010 at 11:05 am |
  691. elly

i think more places should do that! it would really help people that
don't have a lot of money!!

    May 28, 2010 at 2:17 pm |
  692. Krissi

I don't tjink that it is a good idea, because there are lots of dishonest people out there. But, Then again, there are also alot of people who can't pay for food.

    May 28, 2010 at 2:31 pm |
  693. Angel

It really wouldn't work in our city, because everyone would rip each other off, and it would cause major economic damage in the city. Everyone needs money, so I don't like the Idea.

    May 28, 2010 at 2:45 pm |
  694. Cassandra

I think it is such a wonderful idea. But I think many people won't pay much.
I've heard of a store which owner doesn't stay in. So the customer has to pay by the tag. Well it didn't go very well.

    May 28, 2010 at 5:38 pm |
  695. Bettina

well, i think it is a good thought. However, some people who have enogh money ... can even less. And that could effect the resturant,

    May 29, 2010 at 6:19 pm |
  696. Jaclyn

I think paying for what you can would help my community in Delavan,I wish i had it cause my mom cant afford anything much

    May 31, 2010 at 5:50 pm |

I think the idea that these people had was a good idea. The fact that they can offer what they can is good and if they don't have any money they can clean. It will bring customers to the door. I am surprised that we don't have these types of coffee shops around the U.S., especially in rural areas. The only negative thing is that people can say they'll help, but they would just leave. Overall, it's a pretty good idea.

i think that the pay what you can is good because some people don,t have money like ether people but some people be faking like they don,t got no money but they do be having money thats all i got to say bye

I think this is a great idea! It's a great way to help people out in the community. I gives people a chance to have a good night out even if you wouldn't be able to afford the bill. It gives people a better oppurtunity to help each other out in society.

Although there will always be some dishonest people, for the most part it would work. Instead of relying heavily on a set price and making a profit, this system helps people and the community. If more businesses were like this, we would hear less about people starving or going without necessities because they don't have enough money. A less rigid system would benefit our economy greatly.

i think this is a very good idea and that it is very helpful to people in small comunities who dont have enough money for essencial things like food, or water. on the other hand i think this would only work on small areas. this does say something about our society but some people would take advantage of this system and use it to their advantage even if they dont nessasarily need it the most.

that's the best thing that i have ever heard of. i know that if i were a customer i would pay more money because of their thought. they've put thought in to the fact that we are in a recession and many people are on a very tight budget so paying what you can is better than paying nothing at all. how expensive food is now makes you want to stay home and eat, but paying what you can gives everyone even the under privledge a nice meal.

bread is free? thats incredible, oh, if i was live there, i would be eat all kind of bread abundantly everyday. of course, i wouldn't pay anything

Why should we have to pay more money 4 college? We can get our parents to teach us.they can get even more moneyif they lower the price, I mean come on,more people can pay that price and BOOM more money.

This is one of the stupidest ideas i've ever heard. nobody is going to leave extra and anyone who does is ripping themselves off. I'm sure it wouldn't work where I live and I don't think it will work there they live either. It's probably just a publicity stunt or something to get recognition for their gracious efforts to help people out.

I think this idea is special. May it will be useful in my city? I would say half and half. In my city, this is a terrible conception. I see, It will likely success if we make a survey before we start the cafe shop. However, it is perhaps a greatest idea we have never heard!

in my area it might work because their are always people in need of a nice meal. also i think it is a great idea. People will like the idea and it seems friendly.

  717. dante

paying what you can is very different. And it probably won't work well in my town. Everyone is busy. People might not even bother doing the work. People might eat and run.

    June 14, 2010 at 11:18 am |
  718. Cathy

i think that's a perfect idea! it would make more business for the restarunt, and maybe some kind-hearted people would donate money to the company!

    June 14, 2010 at 11:19 am |
  719. Michelle

Yes, it will succeed, but there can be some cheaters. Some people might say "Oh no I only have $20," while in their wallet/pocket lies a $50 that belongs to a big fat liar. How can you be sure they're not lying? And there is no way a security guard will search them. Costumers complaining, cheaters cheating, and waiters waiting for a big fat lie.

I live in Philadelphia, so a pay what you can resturaunt wouldn't work because no one would pay it would go out of bisniss.

No, because a lot of people are losing jobs right now

There are ups and downs on this plan. The up side is that you can pay what you and the down side is that to leave extra and work when you have no money at all that's stupid.

  726. Marjanna

I'm not sure about my town, but I think everyone would just lie about how much money they have. Sure, it would make people happy, but the place wouldn't have enough money and it would be bankrupt in less than a month.

this won't work in my town

    June 14, 2010 at 11:39 am |

I think this idea was very thoughtful. The problem is that some people aren't honest and they'll just eat for free when they could've payed a little bit.

A "pay what you can resturaunt" is a cool idea and helpful in some places. Although it wouldnt be needed in my community.

I dont think this is a very good idea. While it is very nice of the owner, it seems like some people would take advantage of them and even if they had enough, they wouldnt pay the full amount just to save a few bucks. Also the way our economy is right now the owner cant offord to be ripped off just because selfish people are taking advantage of them.

It would definitly work in my community. Since the prices can be low, individuals have to spend less money. Since people will come because of the low prices, the shop will get twice as much money.

the stupidest idea i can think offf. IF you dont have money you should not be in that restaurant at first place you dont go and eat and see if you have money or not you see if you have money or not and then go to the restaurant.

One change would have to be going from periods to a block schedule. Having a block schedule would give it's more time on bigger subjects. I have never had block schedules and it would be fun just try it out.

what i would do to fix my school is to be able to put vending machines in the hall ways. Kids in my schol dont really like coming to school because we have no machines to get snacks. I would have better cookers in the calf. iF WE HAD MORE PEP RALLIES ALEAST EVERY THIRD FRIDAY!!!WE WILL BE THE BEST SCHOOL!!!

The thing I would change about my school would have to be limiting classes to 3 – 4 a day, so we can actually learn something without going to 8 different classes, and it would be awesome if we could do that, and even maybe leaving school earlier then 3:00, because trying to learn 8 different subjects can be very stressful and annoying, and you don't get much time to learn anything. But for the most part that would be the only thing that I would change about my school.

I would fix my school by making the food better. The kids got the right to eat what they want. The kids would like to eat what ever they want. We could also give some good food for the people that want to be healthy. this is what i would change in my school.

i would fix my school by getting more teachers and by getting more time to get to classes. getting more food and getting more buses to get us home faster and less homework and having more time in class. and putting more vending machines in the school. I think that would help because it could help bring more money in the school.

I think how my school could be better is having a beautiful looking school. Pretty lighting and colors on lockers, classrooms, and pretty decorations would make kids believe they are in a safe and comfortable learning environment.

What makes a school a good school? Just about everything. Its not just the facilities, its not just the teachers, its the school as a whole. If the food in the cafeteria is bad, the students will end up with a bad stomach ache and not be able to pay attention in the classes following lunch. If the teachers are bad, the students won't be able to learn what so ever. If the students themselves are bad, the whole school with end up in shambles. How would you feel if half of the school was shooting rubberbands at your face?

It would probably work in my town because we have many mom and pop restaurants as it is. If you are a few pennys short, they'll let it go. But there should be a minimum amount that you have to leave. It definitely wouldn't be fair if someone ate $80 worth of food and only left $2, now would it?
