Afghanistan Troop Increase

Do you agree with the president's decision to send more troops to Afghanistan?

The decision has been made: President Obama is sending 30,000 more U.S. troops to Afghanistan. In the days ahead, you're going to hear reasons for the decision and arguments against it. But right now, we're interested to hear where you stand on it.

Do I agree with his decision to send more troops? Yes. Personally, I feel less troops should be sent overseas. However, it's the president's decision, not mine.

President Obama said that he would withdraw troops if elected. Now he is saying he is going to send more. This is turning out to be like Vietnam. We fight with them, men and women are dying. They have told us several times to leave. But no we have to stick our nose in everything that happens to the world. Yes I know they attacked us. But we took care of the many leaders. What we need to do is keep out of other people business. When we are attack or our allies are attacked we take action. But we should not fight battles that do not invalve us. In the last eight years we have taken out most of the leaders of the tele a band and ali kida. Why cant we just stop the fighting and let them deal with them selfs. In the last year over eighteen men and/or women have died fighting in Afghanistan and some have death in Iraq. When will we become a country of peace again. Will it not be till 2011-12. I am proud of the those that serve your country. And I am most thankful of what they do. But how long is it going to be before a mother is return to her family. A child to see his or her parents. What will the cost of war be? Will it be to rebuild a country? To give food to those in that country that are going hungry? What is live to you people is it all war and no peace? Is it living with the fact that people that serve are dying? Or the fact American are to stubborn to realize the danger that we are facing to day?

Using the generally accepted GAO figures, 1 American Solder in a war zone is 1 million taxpayer dollars per year in support.

Troop increase to 100,000 in Afghanistan alone:

100,000 American Soldiers = 100 Billion Tax Payer Dollars Per Year

Imagine how important and grateful Americans would be if 2 Billion extra dollars were given to each of 50 States that are literally falling into Bankruptcy and are cutting back on badly needed public services?

Hi I think That Obama sending the troops to Afghanistan was a bad choice because now American tax payers that don't agree with it have to pay for it. Well that is opinion. I love your show

To be quite honest, I believe that the troop increase is completely necessary. Without it the Taliban would just continue as they have been. Hopefully the troop increase will pressure the Taliban enough to have a significant impact on the rest of the war, both short and long term.

Now, United States have many problems like economy and jobs. I'd agree if the aren't problems in U.S, but I think before we send troops to Afghanistan, we sould solve the problems, first.

I think that people need to just see what might happen and what Obama has to say. Even though i dissagree with it too, I just think that we should give him a chance with what might happen.

I think president Obama should not send more troops to Afghanistan. It is irrisponsible to make more debts to make us to pay it all.

Obama became president mostly because we wanted our troops of war! Now he is sending more AND he is making us pay for it! That is just wrong!

i think the president should not send more troops because violence is not the answer to anything. If we all just get along then the world will be a better place for everyone.

Yes,i think Obama should send more troops in to Afghanistan so we could bond with another country , stop the war , and let the world come to peace.

I do think president obama should send the 30,000 troops to afghanistan but i didn't like the sound of the price of $30 billion being invested, I personely think he should have tought about this a little more, were talking about a war

I believe that we are already in this war and not sending more troops to end this war we will be quitting. This will make a difference for not only the Afghans it will give us the pride of never giving up.

i dont agree with doing this because he shouldnt sent all of them at once. More people that shouldnt even be there, will die when they shouldnt. He should just send a couple at a time. If he sends all of them at once he will run out of troops faster.

I think that Obama should send troops but not as many because of the economy its hard to have so many more soliders get killed.

I think we should send more troops because we will never know if

I think that President Obama's decision to send more troops to Afghanistan was a good one we need to get more leverage over alkaida and the taliban even if it does cost a lot of money to send them it is whats best for my country

  23. nikita

I think it was smart of him to send more troops. The others that are already out there need help. But it does have it's negative side. More people will probly be killed because there is more of them. So it does have it's pro's and con's but we just have to live with it and hope our loved ones come home.

    December 2, 2009 at 11:02 am |
  24. Rebekah

Well I do agree with President Obama's choice, because right now we have troops that have been over in Afghnistan for several years now and they came to win, so that is what we should do. We came over to fight, not just give up just because we have to pay billions of dollars. So i think that it is a good choice, and we should belive and pray everyday that when it is the right time we should take them home, but until then we have to have faith that they will be safe and have guardina angels surrouding them.

I think that sending more troops to afganistan was a wise and unwise desision, sending more troops would end most of the taliban but also end more lives, president obama needs to relize that by sending more troops, knowing that half wont return, he is killing their families and friends.

I think that Barack Obama should miniumase the amont of solider he sends. He should decrease the amount of solider's because some of them have familys to go to. The solider will have to tell there children that they might not comeback. On the otherhand Barack is protecting are country and making great decisions. When barack Obama send troops to Afghanistan to help out there situation overthere and that was helpful.

    December 2, 2009 at 11:19 am |
  27. Jimson

I think that Barack Obama is making a great decision sending more troops to Afganistan. I think that he should minimize that amount to 25,000.He should do that so the others can go back to the cite and be more prepared. Obama sending the troops out to assits in there situation is outstanding.

I think that if it will mean ending this long struggle that we have been engaged in, that it would be a good idea to troop surge Afghanistan. It is obvious that we are in no state of economic stability to pay for this troop surge, but if it could be done, and it did get us out of there within the next two years, it would probably save our country tons compared to the alternative possibility of staying over there for the next decade. As long as the troop surge is utilized quickly and effectively, I believe that it is a good idea.

  29. Rylie

I feel that this is a good idea. We do need more troops to help out the other troops. I don't think that pulling out troops in 18 months is going to help though. Why send all these troops over to start more work and then start bring home troops a little more then a year later. This process takes time.

    December 2, 2009 at 11:29 am |
  30. Randy

I believe if there is more troops, there will be more violence. On the other hand, more troops could scare the terrorists into hiding. For when the troops are called back, I think that it should be at least 14 months.

    December 2, 2009 at 11:29 am |
  31. Presley

I think sending more troops to Afghanistan is a good idea because our troops are struggling trying to get everything organized and under control there and with the insufficient number of troops it is almost impossible to do that. If they send more troops to Afghanistan there will be a better chance things will move quicker and more efficiently. I have a friend who is serving his second tour of duty in the Middle East and he is lined up to go to Afghanistan in 2011. I think this is a great plan, because we need to maintain a presence in the Middle East.

  32. Kacie

In My oponion I do not believe that we should send more troops over, I think that all that is going to do is make more people mad and it will never end even if he is going to try and take the troops out, and if he is going to take them out in the next 18 months there is not a whole lot of time for them to train.

    December 2, 2009 at 11:31 am |
  33. Ashley

I disagree with President Obamas decision to send more troops into Afghanistan. We are complaining that the troops have spent to much time in Iraq but here we are sending them to Afghanistan. Personally i belive that we should just bring our troops home and reunite them with their families. They have already been there for eight years, if it hasn't improved yet what makes us think it will in 18 more months. If there hasn't been a change yet it's pretty likely that there wont be much of a change in a time period of a few months. The entire country has to want and put for an effort in order to cahnge, not just a few people and thats obviously not going to happen. Our troops have help alot already so lets just reward them for what they have accomplished and bring them home to their families.

    December 2, 2009 at 11:31 am |
  34. Zach

I don' t think we need to send anymore troops to Afhganistan especially 30,000 more. Not only is it not going to do any good it's going to put the US 30 billion more dollars in debt. In order for them to be sent over there they're taking money from us the citizen to pay for something most of us don't even agree with. The United States is already trilions of dollars in debt so why keep adding to that.

    December 2, 2009 at 11:31 am |
  35. Brock

I personally agree with President Obama. He has made the right decision to send more troops over and use them to train the Afghan troops to better protect themselves. The only part I do not agree with is the time table that he has proposed. I believe that we should stay there for atleast another 2 years instead of just 18 months that way we can make sure that the Afghan troops can sprotect there country without our help.

    December 2, 2009 at 11:32 am |
  36. Tyson

I agree that we should send over more troops. I would much rather be fighting over there for the next 18 months then having terrorist attacks go on in the United States. Yes the war does cost a lot of money, but it also provides more job opportunities for the citizens of the United States.

    December 2, 2009 at 11:32 am |
  37. Auston

I think he made a good decision on sending more troops. If he would have let them come home they would've done more terrorist's attacks. I don't think anyone wants 9/11 or anyother terrorist attacks to happen again. If we let they didn't send more troops they would attack the whole world so we aren't the only ones that are getting attacked. So it would make the world safer.

I disagree with Obama's decision to send more troops. We have been over there for 8 years now and if they cant fix the problems over there in that much time i dont think that sending 30,000 more toops over there will end it any sooner. He plans on being out in 18 months after sending that many troops over and i cant really picture that happening especially while there are still troops going over.

I think it’s good that president Obama is sending more troops over there. I think if we just pull out right now we will have Afghanistan over here in the US. When they become stable on there own, I think we should work our way out.

I think that it is a good idea to send troops, he could have sent moe, and I think that the time to take them out shouldn't be 18 months, but whenever the jod of overthrowing the Taliban is done.

I do believe that the troop do need to be sent but I don't think the president should have said when and where in Afganistan the troops where going to be sent because in reallity that should of been cassifide information. Now they know where we are going to be to increase attacts there or move other place to continue. So far as the time frame that should of never came out becuase it may take longer than planed and they will have angery people when that happens.

I think it was smert for Presedent Obama to decide on a time line of the troops, we need to understand that Afganistan needs more troops.

I think that this idea of President Obama's is a bad because it's just killing innocent people. And what about this whole 2012 thing. I remeber Obama saying that in his run for President of the United States, he said that he would try to get the troops out as soon as posible. I am a big supporter for President Obama, but 2012 is not soon enough!

I think that he should not have made the desicision he made to send 30,000 troops to Afghanistan because some troops will eventually die and there will be less troops.

    December 2, 2009 at 11:36 am |
  47. Emily

I think that we should just drop the war in Afganistan. Many of my friends and me dont have the money to pay extra for war because they play sports that cost like 5 grand a year. Our soldiers are dying, and the Taliban isnt going to quit. If they come after us, than so be it. We should be the bigger country and not fight. If they want to be immature and plot to wipe out our whole country, than they will die trying. The only way to end the war is take ALL the troops out, and just drop nuclear bombs till they understand that we are done with them. That is what we did to the Japenese, why not Afganistan?

I think that president Obama should send 40,000 more troops to Afghanistan because it will be alot of money to send 30,000 and take them back in 18 mouths and it might not be over so just send 40,000 troops and bring them back when we have it under control

I agree with president Obamas idea of sending 30,000 more troops! The more he sends the faster this mission can be completed and they can come home faster to there family. Also when they have more troops they are safer cause theyhave each others back at all time just like there family. The only bad thing is that more people die but still the faster we finish the mission the less people die!!!!!!!!!!

I don't believe in war at all. But since we are in debt we might as well pay it all back before it gets really bad.

    December 2, 2009 at 11:46 am |
  59. Renee

For starters I don't agree with Obama at all. When Obama was elected at President, he promised America a change and a start at a new life, but the only thing Obama has done for America, is dug us into a bigger hole. He was against the war and had the idea or bringing troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan. He has kept his promise with Iraq but has decided to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan. America alone is 12 trillion dollars in debt and with him sending more troops, will make our debt go up more as it is. I just hope America will open their eyes and see what President Obama is doing to our country. They say the world will end in 2012, well with the rate that we are heading, it will end in 2012. What Obama is doing is wrong.

umm.i think that they should put in more troops till the job is finally done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wow, because if they take them out they will just cxome here and kill us!IF you risk the troops life to get the job done finally then its bettter then risking all our lifes!

    December 2, 2009 at 11:50 am |

    Yes.

If those 30,000 troops are required to do your job as quickly as possible and as efficiently as possible, then by all means he was right in sending those troops.

i think it is a good idea but at the same time i don't becuz whats the point of sending more troops if he is going to take them out in 18 months. As i said it's a good idea because the people in Afghanistan need to be trained so they can fight on there own so they wouldn't need are help anymore.

    December 2, 2009 at 12:03 pm |

I dont think that it is a bad idea because we have already lost a ton of money to the war...why waste more if we are $12 Trillion in debt. I think that it is just a waste of the money that we dont have! We should just finish what we have started with what we have! >:P

    December 2, 2009 at 12:03 pm |
  66. Sam

i think that they shouldn't send more troops over to Iraq because there are already alot of people over there so why send more we should bring back all the troops and end this war. and the presidents should talk this out and put people in between them.

I agree but disagree at the same time i agree because this will help stop the war but i dissagree because its taking people from home?

I agree with the presidents descion because the troops there need to be relieved and be sent home. I don't like Americans going and getting shot at but they have to do what they have to do. I agree as long as Obama keeps his deadline and withdrawls all the troops from Iraq.

    December 2, 2009 at 12:04 pm |

I like te idea of sending more troops to Afghanistan because then we have more heathy and energetic troops in the war and the ones who are injured can get some help from the new guys.

i do not agree with the decision obama has made because i dont think it is worth all that money and all those people and putting us in debt and maybe killing all of those people lives just for a war it isn't worth it

Yes ,because presidant Obama did think this over and make dates when he is sending them over and back . This must have taken much time to plan all this , and to say that he all so plans to make the U.S. stronger while this is happening..

I'm not so sure that Obama should have sent 30, 000 more american troops, I mean we already have a lot there so I think that others countries should have sent troops. But if other countries weren't going to send any, then I think it was the right choice.

    December 2, 2009 at 12:17 pm |

I think it was good to send more people to Afghanistan, because they need to catch the people who might be planning another attack as bad as 9/11 or worse. If they just stopped now then the Taliban would continue and we will probably have another attack that threatens many peoples lives.

i think that sending more troops is a good idea in the way that it might stop any terrist attacks tord the United States but,I also think its a bad idea because it of all the debt it brings along with it.

I am glad that Obama finally made a decision and put some troops in. I think it was wrong to just have the troops that were there just die. I do not think that he should have taken them out of Afganastan because then they would be mad about it and try to hurt us. =)

I stand in the middle for the Presidents decision. It is a good thing he sent U.S troops there becasue they will help to train Afghna troops and hopefully then Afghanistan will have the freedom we have. Also Al'Queda is there and if we didn't send that many troops who knows where they would have gone next. It isa bad thing because sending 30,000 troops is like throwing away 30 million dollars. The economy is bad enough and know it's going to take even longer to get our ecinomy pack on the market again. So for this story I stand at the middle.

I think Obama should send the troops because Al Quida will probably bomb our country.

I think that President Obama made a good choice. I agree that we need to protect our country. Though I am going to probably going to have to pay it of when I grow up, I would rather pay of a debt and live, then have my country attacked.

    December 2, 2009 at 1:00 pm |
  92. Dylan

The president should not send troops because it will ony make make the economy worse due to provisions, transportation, weapons, etc. This is a war that will never end. Alkaida, the Taliban, and other terrorists will never give up and we cannot change their opinoins. I don't even see the point of this war. The terroists know how to fight and it will only lead to more American deaths.

    December 2, 2009 at 1:01 pm |
  93. Mikayla

I don't think they should send the groups out yet. I don't think they should do this because the U.S already owes so much money in debt, and i think they should pay that off before they start sending troups out. I'm not saying that they should never send them out, but we should probably pay that money off before we start anything.

    December 2, 2009 at 1:03 pm |

I think that it was a good idea to send more troops to Afghanistan. I think that this was a good idea because it said that Afghanistan attacked our country. So it is a good idea to send more troops to fight for our country. Barak Obama you made a very good choice.

    December 2, 2009 at 1:03 pm |
  95. Nicole

I think that they should start taking troops out, not adding more. They need to start bringing them home not sending more out.

    December 2, 2009 at 1:04 pm |
  96. Kaitlin

I think that if we want this war to be over why do we keep sending troops to Afghanistan. Why can't we just pull them out now and leave them be, there are beyond our help now.

    December 2, 2009 at 1:04 pm |
  97. Shenay

I don't agree with his plan at all. The longer we keep the troops there the more the Afgans will just rely on us to keep them safe. Training them is a good idea, we should do that then just leave. We aren't really obligated to help them, why are we?

    December 2, 2009 at 1:04 pm |
  98. Tyson

I don't think we need to be sending more troops into Afganistan. This will only cost the United States more money, and put us farther into debt. I think we have enough troops there already. Sending more troops will help the Afganistan country, but we need to think about our debt crisis we are in now and worry about that. We went there after the 9-11 attack and have not done much good since then. We went there to capture Osama and stop terrorist attacks. We have stopped terrorist attacks, but yet to find Osama.

    December 2, 2009 at 1:06 pm |
  99. Ty

In my opinion i think it will help a litte but we also have to think about how long we have been there and wat all we have done. yes it has done good but at the same rate we have been going, it won't dp much good. it may help ubt unless we in a way sit back and let them deal with it we will be running everything with them in our footsteps. we have to let them learn by taking control and let them choose wat is best for them. We can still stand by for help but its time for them to be the leaders.

    December 2, 2009 at 1:07 pm |
  100. Zach

No because I'm Republican and I want to be just like congress and disagree with what ever Democrats propose. Even if it is a good idea I don’t like it because a Democratic president came up with it and just like our legislature that’s how I roll.

    December 2, 2009 at 1:07 pm |
  101. Victoria

I do agree with it but then again I don't. Yes, I think that some troops should be sent to help train troops from Afghanistan. However, we have been sending more and more troops over there for years. I think it is time we start using what we have. If we would train their troops first then we would have more troops that would be fighting right along with us as we fight terrorists. I do not think we should keep sending more troops. I think we need to train their army and slowly start pulling our troops out and getting them back home.

    December 2, 2009 at 1:08 pm |
  102. Shailynn

I beleave that sending more troops will olny make Afghanistan people think that we are going in to wipe them out. i think that this will olny cause more hate and they will try harder to attack us.

    December 2, 2009 at 1:08 pm |
  103. Carson

I don’t believe that it is necessary to bring more troops to Afghanistan. I think the better thing to do would be to get the troops already over there fighting home to their families. We have been there for a long time and think that things for the most part are some what under control. I do not think we should risk any more American lives over in Afghanistan then we already have.

    December 2, 2009 at 1:08 pm |
  104. Zachary

I think that the president has made a good decision this time. The current troops in Afghanistan have needed support for a long time. This new troop increase will give our forces the ability to get Afghan security forces trained quickly and get the country under their control, so we can get out of there. The sooner we are out the better.

    December 2, 2009 at 1:08 pm |
  105. Kaylie

we do not need more troops over in Iraq. our war with them should have ended a long time ago. when we first went to Iraq we had one goal, and that was to capture the people in charge of the attack and put an end to this madness. after we accomplished that goal we decided to stay and rebuild their villiages. that is when they got tired of us being there and attacked our troops. If we would just leave their country and let the afganastan troops fight then we wouldn't have to deal with this war anymore.

    December 2, 2009 at 1:08 pm |
  106. Jesse

I really don't think we should send more troops to Afganastan. I think it's a little out of line to be sending more troops over, then start bringing them back 18 months later. And personally, i think we have been over there long enough. I also thought that President Obama said he wanted to pull our troops out when he was elected. And now he wants to send more troops over there.

    December 2, 2009 at 1:09 pm |
  107. Regan

I think that sending more troops will ehlp us advance in the war. We need to win and get out of their so more troops don't die and we can focus better on our economy!

    December 2, 2009 at 1:09 pm |
  108. Courtney

I personally don't think we need to send anymore troops into Afghanistan. The U.S. is already in debt by a huge amount of money and by sending 30 thousand out will put us back even more. And by doing that the U.S. will then raise our taxes, and I'm not one to really agree with that seeing how high the tax pole already is. What's the point in sending more troops in for combat anyway? Has the U.S. not already done what was needed to be done after 9/11. Because they are now deciding what to do with the supposable suspects from the bombings in N.Y. therefore i honestly don't want to send more of my nations people to fight for something that seems over. So keep those 30 thousand here, and bring the rest home.

    December 2, 2009 at 1:09 pm |
  109. Garett

I think that they should send more troops becasue we do not want the Afghan people to bring suicide bombers coming or other bombs. If they do then we will send more troops. So no matter what we will have to sent troops. It is either getting alot of collateral damage here or send troops now.

    December 2, 2009 at 1:10 pm |
  110. Taiya

Personally, I think that more troops could be used over in Afghanistan because they seem to need as much help as they can get. By sending more troops over, we are giving them much more help than expected. Yeah, it is kind of going out of our way for them, but if we don’t help get them into a better way of life then we could just be facing another terrorist attach. Granted that a terrorist attach could happen anyways, helping them out could make the chances less likely. However, I don’t think it’s fully our responsibility; they have to want to change their economy and their ways of life, and work at it. It won’t come easy but it can be done. This doesn’t really seem likely due to their beliefs and whatnot. I hate the fact that we are risking so many lives over there, I’ve had friends and family over there and it’s a tough thing to go through. While I’m against the war, I think helping the Afghanistan people will eventually help out more than we can see in the long run.

yes, i agree with president obamas choice to send more troops to afganistan because i think we need more troops to stop the war. It will cost a lot of money but i think it will be worth it in the end. i really hope they dont bomb us or attack us even though if they did they would be making a terrible mistake

    December 2, 2009 at 1:11 pm |
  115. Radell

Please help america and afghanistan it would bring us togethere and get rid of the taliban. It maybe even make the other countries around afghanistan trust and believe in us to help them and maybe even have them hel us in the future for our wars. So it is really a good idea bringing in troops to help afghanistan. So help us by helping others.

    December 2, 2009 at 1:11 pm |
  116. Madi :)))))))

okay. i think it is terible that Obama is sending hundreds of other people to Afganistan to fight. It may be good for our sake but is it good for theres? So many inosent people are going ot die because Obama is sending them off. And i dont have anything against Obama but why? We already have people. Well, if he had to send people, like it was forced he should send people who want to go. Like make people and there family be able to say no. Not only the people in the troops.

    December 2, 2009 at 1:11 pm |
  117. Kellie

I think that President Obama's decision to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan is a great idea.We need more troops to help defend the good people of Afghanistan, but by doing so, protecting ourselves from terrorists too.

i think that they should hold out and that the more troops they send out the more money the united states of america would have to pay for there transportation and for there food and all the other need that they need and i think that they should just train some more people in afganistan cause its therre country and they need to help to and we are just there to help are nieboring country.

My opinion on this discustion would be that i agree with president obama because we should try and stop this problem that we are having and try send the troops so that they can help destroy what is wrong. It would also be because then we could protect our country so they do no harm to us and try to kill us when we did noting to them.

I don’t think that the President made the right chiose, because we have big enough problems in the United States. I will back the President all the way with in reason. When you are in a war for 8 years, you need to know when to find the stopping piont. When you can find the stopping piont to end a war you come up with a plan for both countries. We’re there because we were attacked on our own ground and we have to protect it with the cost of life or war. So I think the president is doing the right thing, but the wrong thing at the sme tim. We’re slowly going back into a Depression that we’ve been out of for almost a hundred years. i think that the President should worry more about what's going on in the borders of the United States.

I can not believe that the Republicans are not willng to pay a tax to help support our troops in any way. I am willing to increase my taxes even if it would help only service person be safer in combat or get the needed help when they get back and try to adjust to live in the states again. Enough with the mean spirited people in this country

I disagree with this because Obama will tear apart family members.30,000 troops is alot of brothers/sisters moms/dads that have a risk of dieing.

It was a good decision to send more troops to Afghanistan, but I think

I disagree with President O'Bamas desicion to send more troops to Afganistan because of our current Economic State. We need money for food stamps and other governmental funded programs.

I think that it is the right hing to do by sending more troops the people that say we shouldn't send more troops must have forgotten 9/11 and all the people that died if we do not stand up for them America will be viewed as a easy target by all terrist groups many others will die many more would die if we did not go to war and the brave troops that have been deploed decided to go to Afganistan they were not drafted they belive in the cause.

I think that we need to send troops to Afghanistan. This way we can knock the Taliban out of power. This way we can stop the war and attacks like the one on 9/11.

I believe that we should not send more troops and I personally believe that we should get out of afganistan and come home to the usa. I think Obama should only have sent over 10 thousand or 15 thousand because it is important to support the Afghan people and stop Al Queda from bringing terror to our lands again.

I do agree with Obama! That is because when the soldiers in Afghanistan got interviewed and said that would be helpful. If the soldeirs there want more soldiers and know whats happening there then I would think that the president would listen to them... I think that Obama is doing a great job!

The war isn’t something we can ignore. We have to deal with it now, or we’ll just deal with it later. It will cost a lot of money, but at least the war might be over. This is simply the cost of war.

This is ridiculous because we are sending way to many troops to Iraq. If they send more troops to Iraq because we are going to have to pay a whole bunch of tax. Little ids will have to start working.

I think that we have to remeber that these troops are workers, fathers ,sons and they have other roles than being a recurted soilder. With alll these soilders being killed i think that we should just leave the troops we have and not just focus on fighting and focus on training the Afhganistan troops to protect the their country. We are world leaders we should help not hurt countries.

Why are we even sending people over there in the first place? We are teaching and mentoring the Afghans to get a better military, but how do we know they aren't just going to attack us? Why do we need to send MORE people over there to fight a pointless war? I think we should be worrying about OUR countries issues and help OUR people before we go out and help all these other people, but that's just my opinion.

    December 2, 2009 at 2:31 pm |
  154. Fredo

I think that that’s a dumb idea! We are already the country in the world that has the most debt. We don’t need anymore! Why can’t we just care deal with the issues we have here in the USA? Why do we have to go and help other people? THEY NEVER HELPED US! All of those people that are going into Afghanistan are going to be far away from their families. It is a stupid idea, I don’t stand for it.

    December 2, 2009 at 2:31 pm |
  155. Ivan

I think that training the Afghani people to fight for themselves is a good idea and we should focus on that instead of sending more troops. Of course that would cost money too, but it would get us out of there faster and cost less in the long run. Then we can work on getting out of debt(if that even is possible), which we never should have got into.

    December 2, 2009 at 2:32 pm |
  156. Popcorn

I have somewhat of a split opinion. I half think that we should be taking our troops out to save our debt. I don’t think we can hold it out for too long. Yet, the other side of me feels like we should keep fighting. Sure we may be in debt, but if we are to win hopefully, we could become great allies with Afghanistan and they might repay us. I think I agree more with that. I am leaning toward to agreeing with our president.

    December 2, 2009 at 2:32 pm |
  157. Anonymous

i dont think that they should because we are already in the hole by 15 million dollars and it will cost use another 30 bollion dollras to send more troops to afghanistan and the will have to stay thereanother five years.

  158. sciencefreak

I don’t agree with President Obama sending 15 to 20,000 troops to Afghanistan. It would be good for them to be able to control terror threats in their own country, but we will have to pay for that straight from the paychecks.

    December 2, 2009 at 2:33 pm |
  159. Mihael

I am honestly so confounded with this issue. The Republicans and Democrats are both working so hard to convince the public that their side is right. In my honest opinion, the numbers of troops keep rising. It sounds like we're fighting a losing cause. Al Qaida(sp?) is made up of such dedicated members that I highly doubt this will falter them in the slightest. This war in Afghanistan has gotten to be such a heated debate that I can barely force an opinion on President Obama's move! I guess your opinion on it really depends on your opinion on the war overall. And since I do not know what exactly my stance is, I cannot present my view at this time. Maybe if this move does help, we will all think back on this later and change our opinions. And the issue of taxes? Well, it would be better to pay for something now then have to wait for it to be over and possibly have to pay for a 'lost' war.

    December 2, 2009 at 2:34 pm |
  160. Chirag

Why do you want to have more people to risk their lives!!!
I mean, if anything you want to take them out of there.
They should all come together and say they will talk it out and do it all in peace.
Also it will be more money.

I do not agree with the president. Our economy is bad, our troops should come home and help their families, friends, and there country. Plus, if we have to pay these taxes for the war, subtracting 34,000 of people in the country, more people might lose jobs and won't supposrt their families!

    December 2, 2009 at 2:50 pm |
  163. Max

I totally disagree with obama because i think we're being foolish. this like that child's play where you stick your hands out turn your head and try and slap each other! If we send more troops it will be plain stupidooooooooooooo. if we stop sending troops they might win they might lose. Who knows but if they win they win, and because of that they will stop fighting, the tax payers of america dont have to keep paying for the war, and who knows maybe that will get us out of our 12 trillion dollars in debt.

I think we should pay as we go, not in the future, because everyone in the future will go broke and wont be able to pay for it, and if that happens the government wont be able to fight any more wars or terrorrists

Our economy is going down the drain and our president wants us to pay even more taxes so we can send our family members to a country to fight. I don’t think that we should be doing that at all but the fact that none of us have very much money right now I think that it is a extremely bad idea. No one should have to pay more taxes right now. We shouldn’t even be going to war when we don’t have money. War is bad and spending money when you don’t have it is bad. Why are we doing something that is so bad for our economy?

I think that this whole thing is stupid! I get the fact that we are fighting a war here but that doesn’t mean that we need to send more troops. They need to come home. They have loved ones here in the states not in Afghanistan!!!! Its like if I was sent out with the kids in school & the husband with out a job. That’s how it is. Either a mom or dad is sent out of state with children in school & the husband or wife is unemployed. All I’m saying is that they need to come home & help there loved ones here. Life is too short. We should make the best of it.

I think that this is a horrible decision to make ….. Like you said we are in 12 trillion dollars in DEBT…. That is insane ….. Now with this we are going to be in even more debt … this is not a good decision that president obama has made… I think since we have held them for 3 years without more troops that we don’t need any more. And also you can not put this on future generations because we have no money for anything we would barely be living. This was a horrible DECISION….

Obama’s decision to send 30,000 troops to Iraq is good and bad at the same time. This is good because these troops will make us beat them quicker and easier. But, the bad thing is that were going to have to pay for this war. This is not that good because it like a couple trillion of dollars. Also, it’s not good for our kids because when they get to be adults they will have to pay taxes and pay off the war from 20 years ago. In the end, I think Obama did the right thing and he seems very confident about his decision.

i dont think it is right to send 30000 troops to afghanastan because there are already a lot of troops there.. plus the fact that i dont wanna pay taxes in the future. that is alot to payand that will be a lot of free money we will lose.

I think the sending the troops to Afghanistan is the dumbest decision that obama ever made!!! He needs to learn that there are family’s that want to spend time with there daughter and son that are in the army, and we have a lot of debt that we Americans have, we cant keep paying all of our money that we worked for!!! That is just totally stupid, it is wrong!! We have homeless people because they spent on the war. Obama needs to let this cool for at least a year so that we might have money then. quite wasting our money like this!!!!!!!

    December 2, 2009 at 3:08 pm |
  181. JCT

I don’t think they should send more troops because it all equals money. I don’t know how they are expecting to get all that money! I have a feeling it’s going to fire on the US citizens. They are going to make us pay more money! One way or another we are going to loose lots of money. Like it’s not hard enough with the economy down! I think its going to go down hill if he sends all those troops because people are not going to have the money and people are going to be living on the strret!!!!

    December 2, 2009 at 3:10 pm |
  182. Rudy

I do not think that troops should go over. It’s to much money and we are already getting out of a repression. We already owe 12trillion dollars why make us kids have tog o through a depression and have to payback all the money! It will make it harder for kids! Especially for the drop out rates in high school. It’s just going to worsen our countries debt. I personally don’t want to go through a depression at any age and in doing this I already was going to have one butt I don’t want to worry about having one in the future. Especially when im planning on having kids a husband and a house and bills to take care of I don’t need my money to be taken away for something that Afghanistan can learn just with the thousands of troops we already have over there. One way or another we are going to be in debt if we send our troops over. We can either stay here and bring back all the troops in 18 months and eventually get our 12 trillion dollar debt paid up! Its already hard with our economy being down and we have millions and billions of kids and people living on the street! I just want to ask “why out more on the street?” Its just going to back fire on us! As a kid and if I had a choice to vote I WOULD SAY NO SENDING TROOPS BACK!

    December 2, 2009 at 3:10 pm |
  183. Mckayla

I think that sending more troops to Afghanistan is a very poor choice because all its doing is putting our country in more debt and giving Afghanistan’s the idea that we’re always gunna be there. We are already 3 trillion dollars in debt and this 8 year long war isn’t helping. Where are we gunna get the money from this time. China I bet is through giving money out to people who can return the loan. There’s no reason why Americans should be put to higher taxes and less pay because of terrorists in anther country. I say that we’ve tried to give them our help in building a government and there obviously not taking it. So why send more troops if they’re going to end up being killed?hmmm

it might seem like a strategic move but it is a bad idea due to cost. The u.s is in enough debt we dont need any more on top of it. Imposing a new tax is just unfair to the people struggling to pay their current taxes.

In my opinion, I think they should pay the taxes in separate. It is not fair for the future generation to pay for the war, so they should have it so that this generation pay two thirds, and the next generation to pay one third..

    December 2, 2009 at 5:00 pm |
  195. lexie

I think that we should pay a little now instead of a lot later because some people cant fork up money like that. It would be easier to pay a little now because people cant actually do that.

  196. bob

i agree because we need to make sure that the afganistan soldiers are trained with their weapons. If people think that he should pull troops out i disagree. We didn't pull troops out of world War2 so why should we pull them out of Afganastan. If we did pull the troops out they would have an oppertunity to regroup and take over again. We need more troops to take out the threat.

I think that we should keep them in Afghanistan till the 18 month period is over and train the Afghanistan’s just like its going and I think that obama finally made a good decision

    December 2, 2009 at 5:02 pm |
  198. Paco

I mostly agree with Obama, but I somewhat disagree, too. First, Obama is trying to end it, by training Afghanistan troops. Also the Afghanistan troops are leading the American troops, to build up trust. On the other hand, Obama shouldn’t be just stocking up all of this debt. Children weren’t able to vote for who they wanted president, and we will be paying for his decision. Next, I do like how Obama set a time table up for the troops. If we don’t then when will it actually end? It was a smart decision to say this is when we are getting out. I think that Obama’s decision is smart, but I don’t agree with the tax.

We want to get our troops back in America and to their families. Not take more people away from them. America is already in a lot of debt. If we sent more troops over that could only make things worse. Some people can’t afford to support more war. Some people can’t even afford to buy food. Also, Obama said that he would bring the troops out of Afghanistan.

i agree to make more troops go to get it over with but itss hard to see your loved ones go. i think its stupid that they are going to make the citizens pay for what the government has done. I think president obama makes SOME stupid decisions.

I DIDN’T THINK WE SHOULD SEND MORE TROOPS TO AFGHANISTAN, EVEN WHEN PRESIDENT OBAMA SAID HE WOULD BRING BACK THE TROOPS.

I agree with the decision to send troops to Iraq. We raided their country (they did nothing to us), killed their leader, and took away all form of government. The only right and smart thing to do is send more trrops over there to set back up their government so we do not have enemies. If we do not send troops, Irag can either attack us back or can get their sister countries to attack us or cut us off our resources. We should send troops there, hands down.

I think that it is a bad idea to send more troops to Afghanistan. I do think it is a good idea to start paying for the wars because the war is already trillions of dollars in dept. the price is going to get higher and higher. The sooner we start paying the sooner we will get out of dept. we are going to end up sending all the fee to our grand children and they are going to have to pay for all of it very fast. That is my opinion on this matter.

    December 2, 2009 at 5:39 pm |
  217. Alicia

I think that we shouldn’t send more troops. It will only raise more taxes and cause more debt. I think that American troops should just train the security correctly, possibly pick a new leader, and leave. They could pick and leader that was from Iraq or even America. I wish that the war hadn’t even started because of the long term effects. Bush was not a good leader to follow when it came to war.

    December 2, 2009 at 5:40 pm |
  218. Bobby

I think we should not send anymore troops. I think we should pull the rest out in the next year or so. If we do send more were going to be there longer losing more money. If we get out we won’t loose any more money then we already have. So I think we should get out.

think that the government is doing all of this stuff. They should have to pay. We are all in a tight spot. The government keeps making it so we are even more in a tight spot. So there for the government needs to ether stop do stupid evens that don’t matter or need to be done. Obam is doing all this stuff and he has not done one thing he promises he would so he ether needs to start or get out of the white house and do us all a favor. We all now the only risen he won was because he is African American and he now that so he just say stuff so that he was ok.

    December 2, 2009 at 6:15 pm |
  222. Peyton

I feel that Obama shouldn't send more troops over because when he does then people's family have to go off to seas and we already have enough of that. My own family member has to be sent out to Afghanistan because of him. So I think he is making a very wrong descision on it. Also, we have to pay our own taxes on this delema and we already have a bad economy and why do people have to spend alot of money on this? People should be able to give donations for the cause but not be forced to.

    December 2, 2009 at 6:34 pm |
  223. Sarah

I think that the president's decision was indeed the right choice. It makes sense, to send 30,000 more troops into this predicament. Think for a minute, if we just took everyone out of Afghanistan, (which is what most people want to do) then how would we be protected against another "9/11"? We would be puting ourselves in danger and would be very vulnerable to another attack on our country. To me, this makes absolutely the best sense.

I completely support our soldiers in every way, but they have been away from their families long enough and need to come home. I do not support Obama's plan to send even more of our people over there. We need to concentrate on first and foremost bringing our soldiers home.

    December 2, 2009 at 7:51 pm |
  227. Catherine

I believe that we need to concentrate on helping people in our own country before we go worrying about other countries. This may seem selfish, but look at how many people in our country are homeless or starving. We need to worry about them first.

  228. Taylor

I think that more troops are necessary, however Mr. Obama went on about security but he is only going to send 30,000 when 40,000 are needed! He went on about the cost of sending the troops and how much money is needed ( like he doesnt tax enough already) but his health care bill is just the same amount if not more, and... the majority of Americans do not even want the plan, but he does not complain about that! He also needs to sit down with Gen. Mcchrystal to see when the troops can safely come back home and not put artificial timelines on the soldiers.

Sending more troops is a great idea to help with training the Afgahn amy etc. The extra troops are needed for that purpose. But doing this will use even more of tax payers money and deepen our countrys' debt. I say we trust the Afgahns to run them selfs. Let them be independent for a couple of years, and see how it goes. If it worsen dramatically, then we can go back in and clean it up. RIGHT NOW WE NEED TO BE FIXING OUR PROBLEMS !!

I for one think Obama made the right decision. I'm a military child, I understand that sacrifices that my dad makes should he go to Afghanistan and deploy. If he were to go I'd be proud of him and support him all the way. Regarding the fact that "we face a massive debt"...I'd like to rebut that with... "think of the men and women who have already died fighting for the war on terrorism and for YOUR COUNTRY." Some of you may think this war may be a waste of money, however if we make like the cowards and run wouldn't THE LIVES THAT WE'VE ALREADY LOST BE WASTED TOO? WE SHOULD END THE WAR BY WINNING IT.

I dont think they should pay because if you pay it dont go on the kid its the parent that is paying and then the kid would not care if the parent was paying because it would not be the kid paying it would be the parent paying and then the kid would still not listen if you told them to get up because they had to go to school and i also think that the kid should do chores to pay it off if they do pay.

I agree because it's not the schools fault it's the parents fault. And some kids don't have their parents follow them and they could ditch school. So who's fault is that;the parents.

it's bad enough that troops are out there anyway, Why are we sending more????? More people are in danger and i don't think it is right to have more war with more people.

i think he should worry about debt, health care, etc.

I feel that because we are already in so much debt, spending money to get the troops overseas isin't going to help our poor economy. Also, think about all those families that have relitives in the army. I don't think it would make them happy if their family member gets sent overseas to Afganistan.Maybe Obama could ask contries that are near Afganistan to help them.

I do not agree with Obama! It is irresponsible of him to spend more money when our economy is in debt. The troops will be taken away from their families and some will die.

Obama shouldn't take the troops from their famalies he should put himself in the troop's shoes.

I think what president Obama did is right hae is just wanting to end the war

Sending more trops is just a waste at this point in time. We should finish paying off the debt before we send out more trops otherwise our debt to go up.

I don't think President Obama should send more troops, One of my many reasons is because in one of his speeches he promised to bring the troops home. Another reason is that the war in Afghanistan is not going to be won. The Taliban are a more serious target becasue the more people they kill the more that join because they are offended.

    I'm a slit descicson:
I'm for sending more troops, but I'm against Obama setting a date to take out the troops. We should stay there until we don't need to be there anymore (no matter how long). If we pull out then that will show Afghanistan that we are bunch of scared wimps. The United States I know would fight to the finish.

Obama was not in the wrong and not in the right. More troops could benifit the war effort, but think of all of the men that we are losing now! They are basically giving their life away right when they enter the battlefield.

Sending more troops is worth the cost if we can push out the Taliban for good. The only alternative is to pull out now and let the Taliban and al-Qaeda safely plan more attacks.

is't good because the shock of 30,000 new trops will give the enemy a big shock that we can get that many trops there that fast and hoopfuly they will surender!!!!

Obama needs to stop what he is doing and think .Obama is a great president, but if he wants to be a known as the president who continued Bush's war with Afghanistan,he should return the soiders home. it's their lifes and their family at stake.

Well I Agree With Obama's Choice. We Need More Troops. Not Everyone Is A Millitant Expert So Common Citizens Shouldn't Affect The Decision Of Making The World Safe For Everyone. Americans Need To Look At The Bigger Picture Rather Than Just Small One About Themselves. Obama And Military Leaders Feel Comfortable About Sending More Troops, They Should. It Is A Different World In Afghanistan. Besides, the Troops Know What They Are Signing Up For. To Keep The Country Safe. The Families And Friends Of Trooops Should Understand That Its Not Their Decision. This Is What Needs To Happen To Make America Safe.

I think that he should send half (20,000) of what was asked for,(40,000), because Carl said that we already are in debt of 12,000
and Obama should pay that off first.

I think that the president is doing a good deed by sending troops and fightion the talibon, but i also think he sho focus more on his own country. I believe that he wants to defeat the talibon in peace, not so much war.

I dont like Obama and I dont think that sending 30,000 more troops is a good idea because of the cost and if we lose more after we send more we will have to send even MORE.

No I do not believe the president should send more troops. My uncle got sent there and when he came back he was different. I miss the old him. It's just cruel what they have to do to families in Afghanistan.

I think sending more people to afgaasand will put more lives in danger. Some day there will be no troops in Afganastan.Because they are going to be DEAD.

we need to send more troops to get the job done like they did in iraq and if things don't work out by 2011. then we need to get out and let them handle it themselves.

I totally do not agree with the presidents decsion to send more troops to Afghaniston. He was the one that wanted to get rid of the war all together. I know he is going to bring them home in mid next year, but he is taking more troops away from their families, and also risking their lifes. If we all could just use our resources wisley we would'nt be in this mess at all.

I feel that Obama should send more troops into Afghanistan in order to finsh the war. Most Democrats like Obama stand against war. Republicans have always promoted war. Those Democrats who voted for Obama are now against him. I feel that Obama made the decision to send more troops into Afghanistan in order to have Republicans stand behind him.
