Should Pluto Be a Planet?

Should Pluto be a planet?

Most of you came through elementary school counting Pluto as a planet.  It was WAAAAY out there, small and cold and alone, but it was tough.  Pluto never complained about living at the far reaches of the solar system.  It just kept moving, right after Neptune, on a long, wide road around the sun.

Then, three years ago, Pluto was demoted.  Research showed that it didn't have all the characteristics of the other planets.  So Pluto was kicked out of the planet club, reclassified as just a planetoid, and erased from textbooks around the world.

Well, some folks didn't like that.  Some still don't.  Many of them live in Illinois and New Mexico, and they've decided to reinstate Pluto, restoring the remote rock to its former position as a planet.

It's like Pluto got its old job back - at least in two states.  So the question is, would you put Pluto to work as a planet?  Or do you think the position of planetoid is where Pluto belongs?

I think Pluto should not be a planet, mainly because everyone will get confused. Educators and science almanacs would have to change their facts once again. Imagine this: hey guys, Pluto's a planet. Never mind, it's too small. Wait, I take that back, it's a planet. If you're going to change something, don't change it once more, unless you want everyone to get the solar system wrong. Isn't one modification enough?

Even if Pluto is very small (and different.)it still is a planet!
look at the people who is short and peopses who are having a troble!(Like blind)Do you think they are NOT people because they are different? No! So I think Pluto still has to be a planet.Even if
    pluto is different.

The way I see it ,pluto is innocent. It isn't pluto's fault.People kicked it out just because Pluto doesn't have the characteristicks?come on,man don't let it out

I think the international group made the best decison about it. I really laughed at the third choice of the vote. "I thought it was a dog!"

Pluto orbits around the sun and it is round. So what if it is small? I think it deserves to be a planet. The Phrase "My very excellent mother just showed us nine planets" makes sense only we consider Pluto a planet.

The shouldn't say its not a planet just because its a little small! I think it should stay a planet.

I personally believe it should be a planet. If it was already considered one then why take it away? It’s too big to be a moon and it orbits the sun. I could easily see it as a planet.

I believe Pluto should be a planet. I grew up learning about Pluto admiring it for its attitude of being small but still getting to be included. To say Pluto isn’t a planet is like saying the underdog can never win. Everyone loves the underdog. Just as everyone should love Pluto.

Pluto has been a planet since 1930 – over 70 years. Why, after so long, should Pluto be disqualified from the list of planets? It hasn't made any difference in the 70 years it was a planet – in fact, scientists studied the dwarf planet much more when they believed it was actually a planet.

I don’t really care if Pluto is or isn’t a planet. I just think it’s really confusing that they change it and are still deciding if they should change it back.

I think that Pluto should be a planet, because like they said it does rotate around the sun. All though it was way out there and it is really small it still rotates. It’s not like anyone is planning on going to Pluto anyways so why are they so worried about if it should be a planet or not.

I think Pluto can be a planet I mean if we found it I think it should be ok. What I’m trying to figure out thou is why and how is it NOT a planet who came up with the idea and why are they trying to see if this supposed planet X really is a planet.

I do remember Pluto always being a planet when I was going through school but I kind of remember a few years ago when they said that it wasn’t. It is not really that big of a deal to me because it doesn’t really affect my life. In the end, I do think Pluto should be a planet just for no reason.

When I was a child Pluto was my favorite planet. I guess I took for granted that it was a planet. But in 2003 it was changed and everyone was surprised. I was surprised; I was even upset about it. Now, in retrospect, I don’t really see what the big deal about it is. I don’t really see why it’s such a big deal that Pluto suddenly isn’t a planet. People should just let it go, it’s not like it’s some big deal that it’s not titled as a planet anymore.

No, it’s not really a planet because it is so far away from the sun. The reason why people say it’s not because it is so far away from all the other planets, and it is so small.

I think that Pluto is a planet because I always thought it was. It’s been there for a long time and people believed that Pluto was and will always be known as a planet. If it orbits the sun than it is a planet.

I think that Pluto was a planet and should always be a planet. I think that it would confuse the people who learned that it was a planet. I also think that it a celestial object has most of the characteristics of a planet then it should also be a planet. Pluto orbits the sun so it should be a planet.

Pluto was discovered as a planet. They researched it and found out that Pluto was not a real planet because it did not have the required things to be a planet. I think Pluto should be a planet because I learned it was being a planet. Scientists should stop changing things and keep Pluto as a planet.

Pluto is a planet because it does go around the sun and there is no point in trying to change it knows.

Well, yah I think Pluto should be a planet because I was taught there were nine planets in the solar system. Saying there are only eight seems weird to me. It doesn’t matter that it doesn’t have all the requirements to be a planet it still should be one.

Pluto has been a planet for years and years. Just because it's smaller doesn't mean it should be ranked any lower than other planets.

I think Pluto should be a planet because even though it’s a dwarf planet. It’s still circular. It’s still in the solar system and it’s behind all of the other planets even though it’s so small it still should count as a planet.

Pluto has always been a planet: It has moons that revolve around it, it revolves around the sun, so just because its really small doesn't make it below bigger planets such as Jupiter or Mars.

Pluto should be a planet because it is all in one solar system. I think that even though it is far out there it is still in our solar system.

Pluto is just to small to be a planet.Sure it orbits around the sun but so dose the rock and ice with it.

The planet seems just kind of too small to be a planet, and there are too many things that could make it NOT a planet, so no it shouldnt be a planet, and we already decided that I dont know why people are thinking about it 3 years later, again, just kind of pointless.

I feel sorry for pluto because it was out there minding its own business doing what planets do and then boom. some scientists who cant even agree on characteristics of a planet demotes him. its just not right.

I think that Pluto should be considered a planet because it rotates around the sun, and its round. So I don’t understand why it wouldn’t be. They shouldn’t have even said it wasn’t 3 years ago, because they might have to go through all of the stuff again to say that it is now.

    August 25, 2009 at 11:57 am |
  30. Ian

Why should Pluto not be considered a planet? Far be it for some international board of scientists to change the name of that heavenly body that was discovered in 1930 and declared a planet long before many of those board members are likely to have been born.

I belive that pluto should be classified as a planet..I mean it revolves around the sun and has other characteristics or a planet. Pluto shouldnt be demoted because of its size!

I believe that Pluto should be a planet, it fits the description of a normal planet, and how else are we going to remember the acronym MVEMJSUNP?

I think yes Pluto should be a planet. It’s have a round shape and the sun is get in to the planet and I think mostly people going to remember that Pluto is the planet anyway. Why don’t just make it a planet. Why we need to make anything complicate ?

I think Pluto should still be a planet. It has always been a planet now all of a sudden they dont wnt it to be one. THAT'S NOT COOL

I think that Pluto should be a planet. I mean now that it has been discriminated against and feels like a lesser kind, there’s no point of trying to heal it. Like your mom buying a toy for you after timeout – the damage was done. Planets have feelings too, and just because it’s so small, it should be given the chance to shine.

Pluto is a planet, sure it may be undersized and a cold remote piece of rock, but kicking Pluto out is just like bullying. Imagine a large person (Earth/Saturn/Jupiter) deciding that someone wasn’t cool enough to hang out with them, so they suddenly shunned them and started calling them a new name, Planetoid; thus this is what happened to Pluto. So in my opinion, Pluto should be reinstated as a planet, as should every other piece of cold rock that orbits the sun.

  37. Draco

Duh Pluto should be a planet! Why do scientists say that it can’t be? I know why. They only say that because they really don’t know what they’re talking about and they just want to pick on something. If anything they should pick on the sun. why does the sun get to be all big and bad like “oooo I’m the sun you can t come near me because I’ll melt you.” Thats not cool d00d.

I think Pluto should be named a planet. It orbits around the sun just like any other planet. Just because it has rocks in its orbit does not mean it can’t be a planet. Pluto was the smallest planet and farthest away from the sun. I think that it should keep that title.

i think that is should not be a planet because like they said anything that is in the way of the circle thatr makes it not a planet and they have had pluto not a planet for about 3 years now

Pluto is a planet as it has been a planet for years. Thought it is way out there it still revolves around the sun. Not only this but it has a moon that revolves around it. True it is the smallest planet, but there is no requirment yet for how big an object needs to be to be considered a planet. Either way i have grown up told and read it was a planet and it will stay that way.

im cind of in between yes and no because it is know not considerd to be a planet but it is also been a planet for many years. i think it should still be a planet because that is what a lot of people learned, so i think it shouyld still be a planet.

Pluto should have always been a planet. That planet was a planet all my life and to see it go just out of the blue. It was just sad. I cried for 27 minutes. Pluto should still be a planet in every single state. Just because it orbits more than just the sun doesn't mean it can't be a planet.

    August 25, 2009 at 2:05 pm |
  45. Alex

I think that Pluto should remain in its position as a planetoid. Pluto may have been considered a planet four years ago, but is now realized to have not fit the description as a planet. Its far away and it has crystals in its path so Pluto does not need to be classified as a planet.

    August 25, 2009 at 2:24 pm |

i think that Pluto should become a planet because it had been for so many years and then the scientists just kicked it out of the category. how would you like to be kicked out of a group? i bet you wouldnt like it either.

Pluto should have always been a planet because it has been a planet for a very long time and once a planet, always a planet. Since it is gone, children can't learn the planet song!! It revolves around the sun and it is round, let it be a planet!

    August 25, 2009 at 2:26 pm |
  49. Taylor

I think Pluto should be a planet because it has been a planet for as long as I can remember. Just because there is some stupid ice in the way doesn’t mean it doesn’t belong as a planet. I think the scientific board should change their decision and make Plluto a planet again.

    August 25, 2009 at 2:28 pm |
  50. James

I belive that Pluto should become a planet once again. Despite previous comment of it causing confusion it actually would not. It has always been taught to be a planet plus material before 2006 still has it listied as a planet and schools update their books reguraly. It would not make much of a difference finacially wise if Pluto was redeclared a planet and it would not take long to update most of the material back to saying it is a planet. It has only been 3 years that is not that much time when you think about it.

    August 25, 2009 at 2:29 pm |
  51. Maddi

Yes, I think Pluto should be a planet. Everyone has grown up learning Pluto is a planet and then all of a sudden it is not because it has ice in its pathway. I don’t think that is a very good reason. Didn’t they know it had ice and rocks in its pathway when it became a planet?

    August 25, 2009 at 2:30 pm |
  52. Brandy

I think Pluto should not be a planet because it has stuff in its path of orbit. And a planet does not have anything in its path. Pluto is a small rock that is in orbit.

    August 25, 2009 at 2:30 pm |
  53. Joel

I think Pluto should become a planet because it doesn’t matter that there is ice in its path. Some people think that it should not be added back because it would add too much confusion. I agree that everything that is round and orbits the sun should be a planet. Pluto looks like a planet, and I think it should be a planet again.

    August 25, 2009 at 2:31 pm |
  54. Kishan

Pluto should be a planet, because it used to be everyone’s favorite. And I think for a planet to be considered a planet it should orbit the Sun, be big, and have a definite structure. And Pluto meets all the requirements according to my opinion and meets all but one of the Space Associations requirements to be a planet. So it has my vote.

    August 25, 2009 at 2:31 pm |
  55. MR

I think Pluto should still be counted as a planet. It's been a planet for so many years and then they say its not. The important thing is that is orbits around the sun so it's a PLANET!!

    August 25, 2009 at 2:32 pm |
  56. Jack

I do not feel that it really matters if Pluto is a planet or not. If it stays demoted, it will continue to orbit the sun. The only thing that changes is its name, and a name will not change the planet.

    August 25, 2009 at 2:33 pm |
  57. Chase

Pluto has always been a planet and that is what people grew up thinking. Now they want to change it and screw up the curriculum up. That is like telling the whole world that all the stuff you learned in school about planets is a lie. That is why they should make Pluto a planet again.

    August 25, 2009 at 2:33 pm |
  58. JOHN

Yes, I believe Pluto should be a planet. It was first recognized as planet in 1930 and there is no reason that after 76 years it should be disowned. It is the only planet discovered by an American and it is an important part of the solar system. It was unfairly “plutoed” into a dwarf planet and honestly, who really cares about one little pseudo-planet at the edge of the solar system?

    August 25, 2009 at 2:34 pm |
  59. Mason

Pluto should be a planet. It has been a planet my entire life and it is not now because of a little peice of ice, it just quits being a state. It meets all the other requirements. Now my children have to grow up with 8 states.

    August 25, 2009 at 2:35 pm |
  60. Miranda

I think that Pluto should be a planet, because, one, if it isn't a planet, then what is it? Do scientists have some sort of name for round floating objects that orbit the sun? Pluto is, in fact (for all you dummies that don't know), actually round and orbits the sun!

    August 25, 2009 at 2:35 pm |
  61. Aislinn

Yes, I think Pluto should be a planet. Pluto should be a planet because it orbits around the sun. It has been a planet all my life. I think it’s unfair to everyone just to say its not a planet anymore.

    August 25, 2009 at 2:35 pm |
  62. Kishan

I think that Pluto should not be a planet, because they have already changed their minds about it once. The astronomical committee said it was too small and that it didn’t have a clear path so I believe them. Pluto also doesn’t meet the requirements to be a planet, so it shouldn’t be one.

    August 25, 2009 at 2:35 pm |
  63. Lana

I think that Pluto should be a planet. The only thing that really prevents it from technically being one is that there is ice in-between its orbit with the sun. I think that is a very unintelligent reason to not classify the planet with the coolest name, as a planet.

    August 25, 2009 at 2:37 pm |
  64. Alayna

I think that Pluto needs to be a planet. So what if it has ice shards floating around it, it’s obviously going to, it is the farthest away from the sun. Pluto does orbit our sun and it has a round shape, therefore it is technically a planet, and should be referred to as one.

    August 25, 2009 at 2:37 pm |

I really dont care whetether pluto is a planet or not i think that we shouldnt worry so much about whether or not a planet is a planet we should focus on the economy.

    August 25, 2009 at 2:38 pm |
  66. Leah

I definitely think that Pluto should be a planet. It has always been a planet. Just because it is a little different than the other planets does not mean that it can’t be considered a planet. There are some people that are different than others and we still consider them a person, so why say Pluto is not a planet because it is different.

    August 25, 2009 at 2:39 pm |
  67. Skiman10

I think pluto should be a planet. Come on you scientist out there Pluto was classified as a planet a long time ago why should you strip it of its fame. Pluto was famous and noticed because it was different. Some times things are different then others and we have to deal with it. Crazy Carl Rocks!!!! Well, that's my comment.

I think Pluto should be a planet, just because lots of kids, and maybe even adults, grew up learning that Pluto was a planet. Why should History be changed?

I think pluto should not be a planet because mostly all the other planets have gasses and clouds on them pluto does not.

No way, Pluto is way to small compared to ALL the other Planets.

I heard some people complaining about people always making things more complecated but that was the adults. I was in elemantry school three years ago and my friends were real interested about facts being changed. But that was only once. I think if it changed again now, more people would complain about it. I can just hear them saying "why don't they make a definite decision for once!" :)

    August 25, 2009 at 8:59 pm |
  77. Anaral

They should make a firm decision. Already many people agree on it and there's bound to be some people complaining about it one way or the other. They should go along with the decision they made. If there are proof pluto is not a planet people can't do anything about it.

  78. Lime

OK PEOPLE MAKE UP YOUR MINDS! Is it a planet or not?!? I totally think that it should be a planet though. A planet is a sphere shaped object that orbits around the sun it IS a PLANET!

    August 25, 2009 at 10:29 pm |
  79. Nicc

There is no law that say size matters when it comes to a planet, just because its orbit is a little different then the other 8 should not mean its not a planet, could it not be that it was drawn into our solar system over time a different way therefore it revolves around the sun differently? There is no scientist that knows where Pluto came from to disprove that statement. Pluto should be a planet, not a "dwarf" planet.

    August 25, 2009 at 11:31 pm |
  80. David

i believe Pluto should be a planet, i mean just because it doesn't have certain requirements a planet has doesn't mean it cant be a planet.

If science has proven that Pluto does not classify as a planet then why should we argue? The classifications are set for a reason so why not follow thier guidelines?

I think Pluto should be a planet because it is still in the solar system and its still a planet. Also on models of the solar system it still shows Pluto on it. It can still be a planet because it has atmosphere. Everyone knows Pluto as a planet and lots of people still want it to be a planet.

I think Pluto should be a plant, just because it's smaller than all the other planets does not mean it can't be a planet too. One of them has to be the smallest.

Pluto deserves the right to be a planet because it's in orbit with our solar system. I mean who cares if it's really small, it's still a planet. It still orbits around the sun, so technically it's a planet no matter what they say. Who

i agree that Pluto should become a planet again. For most of us, since we were born we have grown up beliving and thinking that pluto is a planet. They have thought us that there are 9 planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and last but never least Pluto. Although Pluto does not keep up with the requierments of a planet it is still a planet to everyone. Sometimes I ask if Pluto doesn't have what it needs to be a planet then why did they name it a planet in the first place. It just isn't the same with out Pluto and although its way way out there i and many still belive its a planet.

In my opinion Pluto should stay a planet. Even though people found Pluto to lack the characteristics the other planets have doesn't make it right to stop thinking of Pluto as a planet. In 1930 Pluto was discovered after all this time scientists should have been able to decide if it was a planet or not. They didn' have to remove Pluto after it being known as a planet for 76 years. Just because they found other objects that were larger than Pluto doesn't mean anything. In my opinion the scientists should reinstate Pluto as a planet.

I think Pluto should be a planet because we all ready have it down in the science books. Also other documents so somthing that has all ready been a planet should stay one.

I believe that Pluto should be a planet, most of us got thought that Pluto was a planet. Pluto may be a small planet but not just because of that it doesn't mean that they should disqualified Pluto from our solar system. Pluto should stay as a planet(Pluto is part of the family alredy so what's the used), because it revolves around the sun just like the other planets do. If professional have find that Pluto doesn't have the elements to be a planet, then why couldn't they just told us this from the beggining, why were they saying that Pluto was a planet then. But if they think that Pluto sholudn't be a planet they have their reasons why and we can't argue about that because they decided that Pluto wasn't going to be a planet and they are the professional.

Pluto has been embedded into our minds as a planet, now just because of that fact we're supposed to ignore evidence dictating otherwise? See, people also believed thesolar system was geocentric, eventually everyone learned to adapt to the heliocentric model. If mankind can adapt to that, im sure we'll eventually get over pluto not being a planet and just as a side note, the category isnt planetoid, its plutoid, they messed up.

This is a very opinionated topic. Although Plutos revolution is just like any other planets, it just doesnt reach the standards. Its like going to an amusment park for the frist time. You can get in, but you cant ride the big roller coster if you dont reach the hight requirments (trust me I know first hand). Pluto is like the kid no one likes. You only recongise it to point out its flaws. Plutos hanging in there so why not give it the credit? We dont gain or lose anything from calling it a planet ... I think pPluto just got alittle colder!!

I think pluto should be a planet. In my opinion If it is one of the
eight planets it should be considered as a planet. If they think
that it is not a planet why do they still show it in classes as
a planet. I think they should make it official and get it over with
already. They should just go on air and have a vote on who thinks it should be a planet or not. Its pointless make up your minds.

Pluto should be counted as a planet because it was there for all that time. It orbits the sun just like every other planet. I feel that if it wasn't a planet it would have never been counted as one in the first place. Many planets have different charateristics so i don't see why it can't still be a planet however different in its own way.

I definately think that Pluto should be a planet again. I mean, when I was a kid, we used to have a planet song, and you can't end a song without the last cadence, which for us, was Pluto. It's been permenantly infused into my brain (and everyone else's that shared music class with me) that Pluto is the last planet in the line-up. It's really off for me to say all the planets and not say Pluto. It's just not... right to me, you know?

I agree Pluto should remain in his old job being part of the planet club.
What 's the point of Pluto not being called a planet. They always taught us that there is 9 planets not 8 . As for me i still consider Pluto a planet and i always will even though they say its not.It may be the smallest one and farthest as well but it doesn't feel the same announcing 8 planets.Next time they should make up their mind and not confused us if it a planet or a dwarf. But doesn't it revolves around the sun????
So therefore it must be a planet and they should add in all the books that Pluto is a planet not a dwarf or some strange thing

YES,I think pluto should be a planet. even though it is very small doesn't mean u have to over look it. It doesn't matter small it is it is still a plant . Whatever happen to MY VERY EARTHLY MOTHER JUST SERVED US NINE PIZZAS. Without pluto how would the saying that has been around for a long time would go.Thats why i think pluto should still be a planet

    August 26, 2009 at 4:59 pm |
  102. Jessica

I believe that yes, Pluto should be counted as a planet again. Ever since I remember, Pluto has been a planet. It's always been NINE planets, not EIGHT. Pluto may not have the "requirements" to be a planet, but who made those requirements either way? So, apparently its too small? Well why not say Jupiter's too gassy? Or,say that Earth is too watery? It should still be counted as a planet, that's what it was before, and that's what it should be now.

  103. Tiondra

I believe that Pluto should in deed still be a planet even though it is so small. Teachers have even taught students a little saying for them to understand the order in which the plant are. My very educated mother just sold us nine pizzas. If Pluto was not going to be a planet anymore then they would've made it a star or dwarf or something, not a dwarf planet.

i dont think that Pluto should be a planet because if its not classified as a planet then it should not be a planet. But maybe because its so far away from earth then maybe the scientists cant see it and they may be wrong.

    August 26, 2009 at 5:32 pm |
  106. Jeremy

I believe that Pluto should be reinstated as a planet in all books around the world. Even if Pluto does not have some characteristics of most planets is what makes it unique. Earth is the only planet with life currently on it, so should Earth not be a planet if the others don not have life? Every planet has something unique about because nothing in this universe is alike.

i think pluto should be a planet its round,it orbits the sun so i thik it should just because its small doesn't mean it can't be a planet.but every one has there own opinion so that's what i think it is!!!

  108. raul

yes, i think if pluto is not classified as a planet i think it should stay like that. Their are scientists that study space and are good at it and if they say that pluto is not classfied as a planet then that should be right.

    August 26, 2009 at 6:16 pm |
  109. Francis

We should not classify Pluto as a planet even though we've been calling it one for so long, scientist make mistakes and as the world and its population evolve we eventually fix our mistakes. Calling Pluto a planet was a mistake we should not let the next generation be exposed to our ignorance about Pluto being a planet. If we call Pluto a planet then we might as well call the hundreds of different dwarf planets and rocks out in ever expanding universe a planet also. If we call Pluto a planet we will destroy the precious minds we desperately need to our world because of one little greedy ignorant stunt people today are pulling... PLUTO CAN'T BE A PLANET!!!

Carl my good friend, I miss my Pluto. I would enjoy it returning to me. With the subtraction of Pluto, most textbooks are wrong now. Meaning schools will have to pay to get new ones. Carl please bring back Pluto. I have known Pluto as a planet all my life, why should size matter?

I think that Pluto should not be a planet . Even though it is historic, it will confuse people to call a non planet a planet. We all know it exsists. And have heard of it before. It does not classify as a planet. And there are other things like pluto should they be planets too? I dont think its far.

    August 26, 2009 at 6:41 pm |
  112. brianna

I feel like pluto should be a planet for the simple fact that, it's been including in the solar system this long. Pluto is the smallest planet of them all and it is the coldest, I think they should not exclude it now. It's included in all types of science books and theories, so why now a change of mind keep pluto in. Pluto does not meet the requirments of a planet and it is does not classify, ok but it is still shown and is apart of the solar system, therefore i feel it should still be or become again a planet.

    August 26, 2009 at 6:52 pm |
  113. brianna

    yes

    August 26, 2009 at 6:53 pm |
  114. Nyla

Yes i think that Pluto should still be named as a planet because it has been named a planet for many decades and now since it doesnt match the characteristicsof the other planets it has to be excluded. Every planet in our solar system are not alike. For example, Mars doesnt have the same characteristics as Venus or Mercury. and Saturn doesnt have the same characteristics as Earth. So what planet our we going to excluded next from our liswt of planets, Neptune? I think we should allow Pluto as a planet, it nothing wrong and there is really no proof wht is really on Pluto until the U.S. travel there with human beings, so give Pluto another chance.

    August 26, 2009 at 6:54 pm |
  115. trevo

I think even though it not a planet it should still be called a planet. For a couple of reasons are when everyone was in school that is what we learned was our solar system had nine planets. That is what learned in school; the sun was at the center of our galaxy, next was Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and finally Pluto. When I went to elementary school we used an anagram to rember it; My Very Educated Mother Just Sent Us Nine Pizzas. This is what learned to do to rember them how can you change it so it only has eight words to rember it by.

i believe that pluto should be reinstated as a planet. why? because now you have very confused teenagers that were taught that pluto was a planet and now they dont even know what it is. it may not be fit to be a planet but they had already named it a planet and then then they say it isnt they just need to make up there minds already.

i think it should not be a planet. Because if it is all that cold like they say and so far away from the solar system then that means that there could not be any possibility for the to be living thing. And also if it is so small and there is nothing important that we can study what is the point of having it there. Because to me that is the point of a planet even though we need all the information we can have to understand where we live and around us.

  120. Lanisha

I think Pluto should be a planet.Pluto should be considered a planet because it was taught that way years before to students.Another reason is because the only way Pluto can be mistaken for a planet is if it has similar characteristics. Also it should be considered as a planet because it orbits the sun like all other planets.

    August 26, 2009 at 7:29 pm |
  121. Isabella

Pluto should be a planet, just because it's small doesn't mean that it can't be a planet. I don't understand why scientist decide to change it after like forever! Now it's all confusing because it's a planet, but not really. And they are teaching little kids that it's a "dwarf planet" and stuff. It's just dumb that they decide to change it NOW. Although it's tiny, cold, and small IT'S STILL A PLANET ! Poor pluto, it's not fair.

My personal opinion is yes Pluto should be considered a planet. It was discovered in 1930 so why all of a sudden should it not be considered a planet? Pluto was my favorite planet because it was the smallest one in the solar system. Also it helps make up the solar system. Without it would it have an effect on Earth?

i think pluto should ba a planet. my reason iz why? i think that cuz itz formed az a planet and looks like a planet.also cause itz part of the sloar system and milkyway.sicenstis report it as a planet before why should thay report it as not a planet no more?my opion why they think its not a planet anymore there only reason would be that PLUTO.its smaller then the other planets.

Pluto should be classified as a planet because that's what it originally was. By now saying that Pluto isn't a planet this means that the scientists who supposedly know what they're talking about their theories are no longer reliable, because they keep contradicting themselves on their own statements. Also if Pluto now doesn't meet the necessary requirements to become a planet now, why weren't the requirements the same before? Sure Pluto is different but its always been.

i think pluto should stay a planet. even though it is far away from the other planets it should be classified as one too. science is always finding the answers from what things are. sometimes things should stay the same like pluto being a planet.

    Pluto...
First off let’s make it clear that were not talking about Micky's weird yellow mutt Pluto, were talking about an odd ball wanna be. Once referred to as a planet Pluto has always been an outcast among all of the other planets orbiting our sun. Pluto is the coldest planet containing roughly about 30-50% of ice on its surface (like no other planet in our orbit). Pluto is the only thing in our orbit that an anti-green house effect occurs. Older people (like my mom) are not very happy about Pluto not being a Planet anymore. I feel that these people should just get over it!! Really what is you not being happy about Pluto being classified as a planetoid gonna change? NOTHING ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING GET OVER IT!!!

From what i'm told in science class pluto is a now just a moon, but i think it should be a planet and it should be , because it was one of the1st planet the Untied States had discovered from what i'm told . I think if anybody should try to removed us of that Honor they sholfa least have som facts to support that it not a planet and should tells us why it sould remain in it's current state. Those who made those changes should come and plea their case in the court of public opinion. It only fair right ..........!

In all honesty I feel Pluto should still remain a planet. For one, I have grown up knowing about Pluto and when everyone was growing up, in one point of there life was taught about and made sure to remember that Pluto was a planet and the farthest in our solar system. I must admit nothing that was a spherical ball of gas that was placed in the line of other planets would be considered a planet but after such a long time it should still remain and be considered a planet.

I think pluto should be a planet because it does the same work has the other planets just because is far away from the sun it doesn't mean is not a planet. Also pluto still orbit around the sun,i think pluto deserve to be called planet again because we got use to saying we got nine pluto and in all the science books when I was little I learn that pluto was one of the smallest planet in the solar system so if pluto got it name famous in the science book and we started learning about that planet then for sure it deserve to be called pluto and that would be my opinion. Pluto Pluto

I think pluto should be reinstated as a planet. Just becouse it doesnt have the same characteristics as "the" planet doesnt mean squatt. No two things are alike. Pluto was discovered on the 1930s and after years of people growing up, and knowing theres 9 planets some scientists are gona say "Nah its tooo small n too far lets unplanatizing" I mean its silly its not a big deal. Why not call it a plant???????????...........................

    August 26, 2009 at 9:24 pm |

I believe that Pluto should not be considered a planet because it does not have the characteristics of a planet. Although it has been called a planet for many years it has recently been discovered that it is actually not a planet it is a dwarf planet.

pluto should be a planet for our solar system becuase it still revovles around the sun. since it is kicked out of our solar system it will have no star of it's own.

    August 26, 2009 at 10:06 pm |
  135. nicole

I believe pluto should be a planet. I mean sure, it doesn't have the same characteristics as a "planet" but scientists have always considered it a planet until now. Why should the rules change now? So perhaps Pluto shares an orbit with Neptune. But it fits in with most other regulations and rules a celestial body must comply with in order to be considered a planet. I've known Pluto to be a planet all my life... It's still hard to believe that there are only eight planets now. I think we should give Pluto a chance. :)

    August 26, 2009 at 10:08 pm |
  136. Kimberly

I think pluto should be a planet because many of us were taught with nine planets in the solar system. Now scientists want to say we only hav eight planets just cause pluto is to far and to small but it stil rotates around the sun and if pluto dosen't become a planet again theres going to be alot of confussing in science class cause everybody is use to nine plants not eight. so we should just leave plute has a planet.

    August 26, 2009 at 10:10 pm |
  137. yasmin

I believe that pluto should not be a planet. My opinion on why pluto should not be a planet because if few years back many people and scientist believed it was a planet then it was,but my truly opinion is that if scientist is not able to see or know what's going around in pluto and the moons it has then it shouldn't be. If u want to make pluto a planet at space u should know every information about it and stop doubting about it....

    August 26, 2009 at 10:41 pm |
  138. cristian

In my opinion I think Pluto should be a planet, because it had been a planet for many years. It shouldn’t be pick on because it’s not big enough to be compared to the other planets. Pluto should be classified as planet because its biggest moon is Charon. I mention this because all the other planets have a moon or more than one moon. It also rotates around the sun or so called the solar system.

I think Pluto should still be a planet. Even if it is small and barely there, its been a planet ever since i learned about planets. Making it not be a planet anymore would confuse everyone that grew up learning that it was one. I think they should have just kept it a planet, like they always have.

I think pluto should be a planet because it was for so long and they just say its not a planet anymore because... It doesnt mean anything. I may be small i still orbits the sun. It has a moon. It sounds like a planet to me.

I believe that Pluto should be a planet not only because it has a moon, but because it has been known as a planet for a long time. When we just suddenly say it is not a planet, people will have arguments, fights, and battles. People will lose friends just because some "scientists" can't make up their mind.

I was reading some of the the post's and a lot of people said it used to be called a planet why not now. I do not agree. If you think back you'll find that people used to think flies camed from rotten meat, and that mice came from hay. And I hope most people out there know that that that's not right. So why is this not just another discovery somewhat linked to the perviously mentioned.

I think pluto should be a planet because it orbits earth like any other in our system. It doesnt matter if it has stuff in its orbit. I am just saying my opinion!! =]

The controversy over Pluto's planet status is sort of ridiculous. It might just be me, but I honestly don't care what kind of planet it is. Pluto being a dwarf planet is not all that bad. In fact, what's wrong with being a dwarf planet? Whether Pluto is a planet or not, people shouldn't be reacting to like this. No offense.

I think pluto should be a planet saying pluto is not a planet is like trying to change history millions of people have grown up thinking there are nine planets you cant change that now.Thats not right. Thats not cool.Thats just wrong.

  147. Alyssa

I think Pluto should not be instated as a planet because Pluto doesn't have the characteristics that all the other planets have. And if the scientists said Pluto doesn't count as a planet, we should just accept it!!! It's very confusing to make a clear fact about the Pluto if we keep disagreeing to each others. And there is no problem with Pluto not being a planet!! You don't die when Pluto is not a planet, right? So I think it's OK for the Pluto to not be instated as a planet.

    August 27, 2009 at 10:14 am |
  148. Kasey

I personally don't think that Pluto should be a planet. I think that it should remain a planetoid because it is so much smaller than the planets and it orbits on a path that isn't clear. So Pluto technically is not a planet at all, its a small piece(compared to the other planets) of space ice and rock that happens to be orbiting our sun.

    August 27, 2009 at 10:16 am |
  149. Matthew

They shud make Pluto a planet agine becouse it is in the solar system. We all have been groing up noing that Pluto is a Planet. I no it is to small to be a planet but we have alwaysed have 9 planets not 8 planets. So why not just not call Pluto a Planet.

    August 27, 2009 at 10:51 am |
  150. Chloe

I Definitly think Pluto should be considered a planet. Not all the planets are going to be exactly identical, so I don't understand why Pluto has to have the same characteristics. Also, It still orbits around the sun, just like the other planets.

    August 27, 2009 at 11:06 am |
  151. Sara

Pluto should definitely be a planet. Just because it has "ice and other space materials" surrounding it isn't a good enough reason in my honest opinion; it orbits the sun. I, for one, will always classify Pluto as a planet.

I won't to right about pluto because it goes ared the sun. pluto is a great planet because it is a planet. If all the other planets are in the skey because it make pluto a planet.

I think that pluto should be a planet because it is conected to the solar system as the rest of the planets. It doesnt matter if it does not have the same characteristics as Earth an Jupiter an the other ones. Its stupid that scientists say that there are only eight planets. Yet I belive there are nine planets. I dont think pluto should be known as a dorf planet. It does not matter if its smaller an made of ice/water. There is not one planet that is the same >:(

Honestly, I don’t care either way. It’s just a rock floating around in space. Whether we give it the title of planet or not isn’t going to have any benefits. Plus why should it be categorized as a planet? That’s just one more thing for younger children to learn.

i believe pluto shuoldn't be reinstated as a planet, because if the scientists found a thousand other planetoids that are the same size as pluto, then what should they do name make all of those planets too. That wouldn't make any since and that would be too many planets to teach to the kids. Pluto is too small to be considered a planet, anyway. Even the second smallest planet isn't as small as Pluto is. in fact i am happy that Pluto is not a planet because that's 1 less planet to worry about.

The senior class of my school says that Pluto should be a planet. That is what we learned when we were little kids, and it should not be changed now. Pluto has moons and orbits the sun. Just because there is something in its path doesn't mean it should lose its title as a planet.

I agree with one of the people that left a comment. Pluto shouldn't be a planet just for our sake. It cause's to much confusion. One day they tell you pluto's a planet next day they tell you pluto's not a planet. There's so many text books that says pluto's a planet and text book s that says pluto is not a planet. It's like HELLO please just stick with one thing! talk about annoying. How about on quizzes when there's a question that asks if pluto is a planet what do we say? what if the same day of the test pluto is still not a planet. Then the next day the teacher grades the test then scientist announce that pluto is a planet. I honestyly think it's very stupid and confusing they should just stop changing their answer.

Pluto. I learned Pluto was a planet when I was in kindergarden! About 9 years ago and now there telling me its not a planet? Pluto has been considered a planet since the 1930's! And it should stay that way! Who cares if it dosent have the other characteristics the other planets have it still follows Neptune around and its also a round object something similar to a planet , another reason why it should be a planet is because Pluto does the same job as the rest of the 8 other planets it still rotates the sun.I believe Pluto should stay as a planet!

I think pluto should be planet because just because it has a worthless name does not mean it's not a plant every plant has it's characteristics even through it's far out in space and close to us does also not mean it is not a planet it does what a normal planet usually does and icy can fix it or change it after if It doesn't look relevent for for it to be a planet then it's a star which every body will ofcourse will say in the that IT IS A PLANET!

My Opinion Is That It Should Be A Planet Again. It's out There Circulating The Sun Like All Of The Other Planets. We all know Pluto Is Small But So Is The Earth and Aren't we a Planet. Besides We All Have Learned That Pluto Is A planet since We Were Kids. Why Take Poor Pluto Away? Pluto Should Be Put Back To Work As The Planet That It IS!

I believe Pluto should stay as a planet because all this time that Pluto has been out there by itself and far away, did they just now notice, why is it now they want to remove it.Pluto should have never been demoted, all planets arent the same,so you cant expect all of them ti have the same certain kind of characteristics. Some planets may be big, small, round, maybe not to round, bright, dark they come in all different shapes and sized, some are gas planets an others are different.Pluto should have not been demoted because for many years people have known it as a planet and that is the way it should have stayed no matter what. Some people really believe that or Illinoes and New Mexico would not have reinstated Pluto and stay teaching it as a planet.People went so far into taking it out of textbooks and not speking of it,now instead of nine planets there are eight.Makes no sense.

Pluto should not be considered a planet. The solar system only consists of eight plants which are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. All eight of these planets meet characteristics of a planet. The characteristic require of orbit around the sun, has sufficient mass to assume Hydrostatic equilibrium, cleared the neighborhood around its orbit ect.ect. Pluto does not meet all the requirements. Just like an animal, in order for a reptile to be consider a reptile it has to have scale and have warm blood ect.ect so if a reptile does not meet that requirement then it is not a reptile. Pluto is a dwarf planet and it shouldn’t even have the word planet in it. I would prefer to call Pluto 134340.

I think Pluto should be considered a planet beacause thats how it has been taught in shools for many years and they shouldn't change it now. Additionally Pluto is part of our solar systems so it should not be left out. Also even though pluto is small it doesn't mean it shouldn't be called a planet. Moreover, even though pluto is an outsider among all planets it stil should be considered a planet due to the fact all planets are different so why don't they just call it a planet? That is how they have been calling it since thr 1930s and they should change it now!!!!

Well I believe that the reasons for keeping it a planet and declassifying its plantery marking are both substantial and have good reasons for both sides of the story. Pluto is located very close to a region where there is alot of space debris called the Kuiper belt , which is a fundamental fact of why Pluto was down graded, furthermore I beleive that it orbits our sun the same way we do and is in our solar system so I believe it should if any have some status as a heavenly body, and should be qualified on a new status bases as a planet without disregarding our memory of its 9th place in our solar system

I think that Pluto should be reinstated as a planet. Pluto was discovered long ago & was classified as a planet. Many people went to school and learned about Pluto, and learned about it as a planet. Know all of a sudden it's not a planet anymore? Just because the Pluto is smaller than other planets does not mean that it is not a planet. It has other characteristics of being a planet. But i also dont think that people should get so worked up about it. It's no big deal. Pluto is not a living thing. It does not have feeling. It's just an a rock in outerspace. People need to act more maturely toward this. Everyone makes such a big deal about a little thing. Yes, it should be kept a planet. But people seriously need to grow up.

I really don't feel as if, whether Pluto is a planet or not it will have a significant difference on the world today. Whether Pluto is a planet or not....... it won't change the world around us, SO WHY DOES IT MATTER?? However, if I had to choose yes or no..... I would probably say yes. Simply, because why should we change it from the way it was before?? We all pretty much grew up knowing Pluto as a planet, so I would more than likely rather it stay that way. Pluto should also be a planet because one minor detail shouldn't be so drastic as to cause Pluto be a planetoids. Also, if Pluto was classified as not being able to be a planet... WHY IS THAT FACT JUST BEING DISCOVERED!!??

I highly belive that pluto should be a planet. it always has i don't understand why they had to take it of.Eventhough it said it didnt have any characteristics like every other planet. But it sure looked like one. It would just be better if they let pluto be a planet anways, its always was known as one. Everyone loves this planet and grew up to know it was the smallest and last planet they have to put it back in the textbook around the world.

i believe Pluto should be a planet. Just because its way out there dosen't mean anything. Or the fact that its small in size and mass.A planet dosen't need specific characteristics to be considered a planet. In elementary pluto was considered a planet why would they change that? If anything they are confusing us. Pluto should be a planet.

I think Pluto should be a planet because it does the same work has the other planets just because is far away from the sun it doesn’t mean is not a planet. Also pluto still orbit around the sun,

In my oppinion, Pluto should not be re-instated, Due to the fact that to begin with its way to far out, its small and whats the point of adding another "Planet" to the solar system when according to scientist it isn't a planet. Pluto, being the farthest, makes it more difficult for scientist to find out any information about it,so in my oppinion keeping it as a planet isnt worth it, all its going to be around for is to have all 7 planets , the whole situation with students who have learned all there lives that pluto is a planet, need to be taught, the reason why Pluto isnt really a planet and what it really is now.

    August 27, 2009 at 7:51 pm |
  173. Michelle

Pluto should be a planet because it has always been one. They say it doesn't have what it takes to be a planet, but arent all planets different? It orbits the sun and don't all the other planets orbit the sun, so therefore pluto should be counted as a planet.

I think pluto should be a planet because all this time people thought it was and now It's when scientist are saying It's not a planet i think they should just leave pluto as a planet so people wouldn't argue more about It and waste money on eraseing pluto from textbooks which cost money to do.

Pluto shouldn't be a planet! Scientists say that a planet's orbit cannot cross with anything else, and unfortunately, Pluto's orbit crosses with Neptune's.

I think if Pluto was always considered to be one of the planets-it didn't need to be demoted 3 years ago. Even if Pluto is different & smaller than the other planets it should still be considered a planet.
So yes-if I was a scientist I would put Pluto to work as a planet & not a planetoid.

I believe that pluto was and is a planet to me. Pluto was name a planet because all planet are round and spin around the sun. Pluto is a dwalf planet because it's smaller than the moon but it still says planet on pluto. Pluto is unique like every other planet. This is why pluto should stay a planet.

Pluto has always been a planet in my mind. Just because Pluto is far away from us that does not mean anything. I do not hear that Neptune can support life or that it is relatively close so why is it allowed to be a planet and Pluto can not? I have already started my learning knowing that Pluto is a planet so for me it is to late. I understand that as years change we learn more about the world we live in but I think that we should not forget the other ideas that got us here with that knowledge.

I grew up learn the solar system with Pluto as a planet. We even did a play celebrating Pluto! I think Pluto should be a planet because all the planets are different. I mean, it has everything else that all the other planets have! It revolves around the sun, its huge, and it has a moon. Doesn't that make it a planet? If it doesn't then just take Earth off as a planet! The Earth, 1) Revolves around the sun. 2) Is huge. 3) Has a Moon. And so does PLUTO!

I think pluto should be a planet. Its small but it is still big enough to have its own orbit. If it has an orbit going aroung the sun, then its a palnet. It shouldn't how big the a palnet has to be. Let's just call it a planet and move on.

I think pluto should be a planet because everyone grew up knowing that pluto was a planet. If they change it now kids will start to get confused. Their grades in science class will probably drop because of the sudden change. I also think that it should be a planet because it will cost more money to take pluto out of all the textbooks in america and we're already in recession. we don't need to waist anymore money on nonsense.

I think pluto should be a planet because its almost like a legend. It's so small and it is cool that it is the smallest planet, I mean it's so unique without it I dont think anyone would really care about most of the planets like pluto.

Well in my opinion ti think Pluto should be re-instated.i think that Pluto should stay planet because all my life I have know it like that . It's size doesn't matter HE IS A PLANET FOR ME . What is the goverment going to do with all the books from school that supposely don't work any more .Haven't they realized tha the U.S is in a crizes millions of dolars are going to have to be wasted for replacing all the science books in the U.S. Instead the can use this money to help the economy in the U.S. Who cares how big pluto is he has been know as a planet of the solar system a lot of years .I think pluto should be re-instated.

Pluto should not be a planet again! We have so many books that claims pluto is a planet and so many books that claims pluto is not a planet. Its like omg just stick with one thing. Who cares if pluto is a dwarf planet or a dork planet. Really?! is it that important are we going to die if we dont figure this information out . And plus pluto is apart of the solar system so why shouldn't it be a planet. Its like scientist are telling us a strange creature that barks, lots of fur, long tail, and eats dog food is apart of the rooster family. All i'm saying is that scientist should just move on unless they have some unarguable facts!

    August 29, 2009 at 12:29 pm |

I think Pluto shouldn't be considered a planet because of it's size and orbit. Scientists say that meteors have been found that have a bigger size than Pluto. In other words, Pluto has a different orbit than other common planets such as Mars, Mercury, Earth, ect. Also it is the most smallest "planet" in the whole entire solar system. It also is the most farthest "planet" in our solar system. So to conclude I don't consider Pluto a planet.

I think pluto shoudl be a planet because it has been a planet since i can remember. and now randomly people change it? it shouldnt be like that. i think it should be a planet , now its a just a big confusion. Some people dont even know pluto isnt a planet anymore. Just because its small, or very far away that doesnt mean it cant be a planet. Pluto should be a planet.

    August 29, 2009 at 12:44 pm |

I think Pluto should still be a plant. Pluto is a dwarf plant and I like it because it reminds me of me. I'm small, I want to be a planet, and I want to be remembered in the future. Also, Pluto is made out of rocks and I love to throw rocks in the water to watch it skip. A little girl gave Pluto its name and i love that because you don't really hear a lot about little girls.
Without Pluto you wouldn't be able to say," My very educated mother just served us nine pizzas". If they don't keep Pluto a planted they would have to chance the old saying.

i think pluto should be a planet because i knew all my nine planets since kindergarden. Many people are argueing if pluto is a dwarf planet or a regular as other say it is. This arguement is causing money prombem just to take pluto of textbooks and science books. Pluto should stay in space and the shouldnt do any harm to the little planet we adored since we were small kids. i truely believe the should give pluto name back an come again to our beautiful solar system and cheerish to what the planet is. I dont care if pluto is considered the dwarf planet , not all planet are identical , for example jupiter is the biggest planet compare to the other that are regular size planets. It doesnt matter if pluto is a ice/water planet, not all planet are the same. All plnets have different characteristics to who they are.

there are reasons why they have desided that pluto is does not have the caracteristics to become a planet and there are the following for a planet to be able to be called a planet has to be able to clear all his orbital path and plutos grabitational force was not and is not strong enoff to clear his orvital path from all the asteriods this is the reason why pluto is not a planet eny more i think that is fair that it was removed from the solar system because it dosent have all the carracteristics of a plane.

    August 29, 2009 at 2:31 pm |
  195. Kyle

I think Pluto should still be a planet ! Scientists are going crazy just randomly declaring that Pluto is not a planet. Although it is one less thing to learn about in science classes, it has always been a planet and always will be in my eyes. And I hope all of you agree and ignore the stupid scientists.. so I disagree with K-Patt

In my opinion, Pluto should be consider a planet. It doesn't matter if it is the smallest or largest planet but it was once known as one. They taught us kids as Pluto being the 9th planet, and have no reason to change that now. Even though Pluto doesn't have the characteristics as a planet, It’s still out there circling the sun, like all the other planets. The only thing they're going to win with this controversy is confusing students.

    RE DO.

There are reasons why pluto is not a planet eny more. Pluto has been removed from our solar system because it does not have the carecteristic of a planet. To be able to call a planet a planet it has to have especial carecteristics and one that pluto does not have is the following. Pluto does not have ennof gravety pull to be able to clear all his orvital path, there are asteriods on his way that he has not clear in thousans of years. By pluto not being able to do that it cannot be called a planet . SO I AGREE THAT IS NOT A PLANET ENY MORE.

I think Pluto should be considered a planet because everyone grew up learning that Pluto is a planet with the riddle " My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas." Although now its " My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos." The non consideration of Pluto being a planet causes alot of confusion for the kids who are now in elementary school. Also, we now have to make new books stating that Pluto was demoted and there is only 8 planets. In this economic situation, we shouldn't be rewriting books just for that small detail. Just because it doesn't have all the characteristics of the other planets and its small, it doesn't mean its important. I with TEAM PLUTO!!

  199. Isa

I believe Pluto should be a planet. Ever since we were little we were taught that Pluto was part of the nine orbiting planets. That is the reason that "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas" was invented. It was invented to remember ALL nine planets which includes Pluto, but then all of a sudden there isn't a Pluto? Even if science facts state that Pluto doesn't qualify as a planet it should still be kept as a one. I think the biggest mistake that scientist did was to take Pluto out of the system because there are many angry kids who love Pluto. Pluto may be small, and lifeless, but somehow Pluto was everyone's favorite planet and we want him BACK!!

I think Pluto should be classified as a planet. First of all, a planet is a large body in space that orbits a star and does not produce light of its own. Pluto does all of those things, it orbits the sun which is a star and does not produce light of its own. The only things Pluto doesn't have is an atmosphere and life, but that is still no justification for Pluto not being a planet. Take Mercury for example, it has no atmosphere and does not support life, but scientists still classify it as a planet. I don't see any reason in which Pluto should not be considered a planet

    August 29, 2009 at 4:36 pm |

I believe that Pluto should remain as a planetoid, and not be back in the solar system. as mentioned it doesn't even include all the basic characteristics that each and everyone of the other planets contain. It wouldn't make any sense to have Pluto as a planet in our solar system, remove it, and then add it once again as a planet, it would just confuse people. And what would be the point of adding it if Pluto's not considered a planet either way, its just basically a huge cold rock out far in the ends of the solar system.

Well im my opinion i really think that Pluto should be a planet because most of us have been growing up knowing Pluto as a planet. Well Pluto should also be a planet because Pluto revolve around around the sun just like the others and is in our solar system also. People will get confused because lost of people have learn Pluto as a planet but now they saying Pluto not's a planet and that just get people all confused.! But i respect the opinoin of the scientist because if they think that Pluto shouldn't be a planet that's on them because they know what they doing so i respect their opinion, but i really think Pluto shold be a planet.!!!!

I agree with everyone that posted a comment about pluto being re-instated into our solar system but i also believe that pluto is just another body off mass orbiting our sun and that they should just leave it alone because cmon lets get real is not like we'll have the opportunity to step foot on that small planet known as pluto because we still do not have the propper technology to travel wayyyy over there at the edge the solar system. Until we find a way to travel there i think people should just simply ignore it and focus on whats happening here on Earth specially here in the U.S.A where the ecconomy has its nose near the ground. P.s CNN keep it up

Pluto should be keep as a planet because even though it doenst have the same characteristics of the other it rotates around the sun. Why would thwy change that. Some of the teenagers grew up learning pluto was a planet and then in the middle of their learning they have to forget that? Why? Pluto In my opinion deserves to be a planet because it rotates around the sun just like all the other planets.

I think that pluto should not be a planet because it does not fit the quality of an actual planet. Even tho it has been a planet for some time, the came to conclusion it is not. If and when they do find a probable cause that it is a planet than it should. It is not in the solar system so immediately it should be disqualified. If it is not a planet then there is nothing we can do about it.

In my opinion Pluto should stay a planet. Even though people found Pluto to lack the characteristics the other planets have doesn’t make it right to stop thinking of Pluto as a planet. In 1930 Pluto was discovered after all this time scientists should have been able to decide if it was a planet or not. They didn’ have to remove Pluto after it being known as a planet for 76 years. Just because they found other objects that were larger than Pluto doesn’t mean anything. In my opinion the scientists should reinstate Pluto as a planet.

For as long as we all can remember, Pluto was a planet. Then, some scientists got to decide that right in the middle of my education, Pluto would no longer be a part of the planet equation. I do believe Pluto should be reinstated as a planet, even though it's the black sheep of our solar system.

I dont believe pluto sould be a planet. Yes even though we grew up believing it was a planet it does not meet the standards to be one. I know we've all needed our parents atleast once just to ride a rollercoaster. Pluto isnt a planet anymore people get over it! Besides Pluto is smaller than the moon so just i mean atleast Pluto was considered a planet for a while i mean be thankful for that.

I think pluto should Be a planet. Ever since i strated to learn about planets pluto even though it was far away and small compared to the other planets it was still counted as a planet. its not like it just move away and got smaller all of a sudden. Scientist should just leave pluto as a planet because all this change will do is confuse people. I THINK PLUTO SHOULD BE A PLANET!!!

I say it doesn't matter. Pluto doesnt need to be a planet. Pluto is still up in the sky. The scientist just said pluto is not a planet they didn't take it out of the sky. I think that if you want it to be a planet okay think of it as a planet but thats it it's not such a big deal.

Okay pluto quite frankly is of no importance. See many people say oh were used to pluto being a planet. Too bad! People were used to believing the solarsystem was geocentric until proven otherwise. Science continues to move forward and we just have to accept that

No I don't think that Pluto should be a planet for the simple fact that scientist have found and concluded that. Pluto is to small to be a planet compared to the planets in our solar system. Also it doesn't have the characteristics and make up of the other planets. Pluto is considered to be apart of the asteroid belt and asteroids can not be a planet because we all know that they don't have make up, size, and etc. I just don't believe that Pluto can be a planet because of the information and evidence that the scientific community have presented to society.

I believe Pluto should be considered a planet because the definition of a planet is a celestial body larger than an asteroid or comet, illuminated by light from a star, such as the sun, around which it revolves, and Pluto does exactly this. Pluto orbits the sun like the rest of the planet, just because it’s a little father and smaller than the rest does not mean it is not a planet. I also think that two states should not be allowed to just decide whether it is or is not, it should be the whole world’s decision based on scientific research.

I think pluto should be a planet because since we were in first grade we were taught that it was and for it to just not be a plant anymore is confusing kids all over cause if scientist were wrong about pluto then its like what else are they wrong about. I think that just because pluto has diffrent characteristics than the other planets doesn't mean that it should be kicked out , it just means its diffrent .

    mr. perez :
i think that pluto shouldnt be reinstated as a planet. Even if it rotates around the sun it doesnt have as much mass to be even classified as a planet. Ofcourse we were taught that it was but that doesnt mean that it should be one again because we learned it was. It should at least be classified as a meteor or a moon to one of its closest planets.this should be considered and make things alot easier.
finially i dont think we should be wasteing any money researching it because it would be a waste of time.

I think Pluto shouldn't be considered a planet, because scientists have found meteors that were bigger than Pluto. Pluto also has a different type of orbit than other planets in our solar system. In other words, Pluto is on the most farthest extreme of our solar system. Normally planets are way bigger than a meteor. So if scientists were able to find meteors bigger than Pluto, I wouldn't consider a planet of our solar system.

Honestly I think Pluto should Be a planet. I was one of the many who cane out of elementary thinking Pluto was a planet even though it was smaller than the other planet and frther away. Pluto aways had these charateristics its not like Pluto got smaller and move away all of a sudden. Scientist should leave Pluto as a planet because it not going to the world any better or worst if Putos a planet. I think PLUTO SHOULD BE A PLANET.

I think Pluto should not be a planet because it does not meet the requirements for it to be a planet. Even though maney people have considered it a planet for maney years the next generation of children will grow up being told that pluto is not a planet wich will fix the mistake of the previous generations. Pretending somthing is real does not actualy make it so.

Well to start things off... Why would you try and push something out of their place. Nobody is the same &just like Pluto isn't the same as the rest of the planets doesn't mean he deserves to be renamed &resign from the title as planet. Pluto is just as much as a planet as the rest of those orbiting balls. He may be smaller and farther and colder but if scientist before considered it a planet then sweet nibblets it is a Planet today. End Of Discussion. [Pluto is a Planet not a Planetiod... Give that little ball the respect it deserves. Gosh]

In my opinion, of course pluto should remain a planet. Its definielty wrong to just eliminate it out of nowhere. All my years in school I have been tought that Pluton indeed was a planet and oout of nowhere they decide to reasearch and declare its not a planet. If its not a planet then why not declare it 8 years ago when I was in first grade acknowledging the fact that Pluto was a planet. In my eyes, Pluto is still a planet and will always be a Planet. They say its a planetoid, it has the word Planet in it so what's the problem. Its okay PlutoN your still a Planet no matter what they say, your still my favorite.!

i grew knowing pluto to be a planet, which was my favorite. My belief on pluto being known again as a plant is that is shouldn't. If it doesn't have the characteristics it shouldn't. Just because it is liked by many doesn't mean that it should. I will miss being thought about pluto.

After livings most of our lives knowing that there are nine planets in total, it doesn’t really make sense to be told that from this day forward there will only be eight planets. What happened to the ninth one? Pluto should definitely be a planet. I mean, what defines planet? A planet is an astronomical body that orbits the sun. That is exactly what Pluto is and does. We shouldn’t believe what we are told. Pluto is a very unique planet and we should all fight for the little ones' rights. We have always lived with Pluto, and we should die knowing that Pluto will still be part of our solar system.

In my opinion, I think that Pluto should be considered a planet. We have been taught ever since we were little that it is. Just because it doesn't have ALL the characteristics of the planets it at least has some and doesn't mean that it should be excluded. Pluto still revolves around the sun, just like other planets do, and and if the Sun is powerful enough to keep in orbit then it should be considered a planet.. This planet has been some of the kids favorite planet and it must suck for them to know this and now learn that instead of our solar system having 9 planets it only has 8.

i think pluto should be a planet because it have the same shape of the other planets even if is smaller in size but that dont matter .Is like if you tell a dwarf that he is not human because he is short . i think it should be a planet because every thing got they own size.

I believe pluto should be a planet. The reason why i believe pluto should be a planet is because it exiists and it used to be called a planet. Just because it is very far and itr is mostly gassy and cold does not mean we should stop calling it a planet. I believe that once it is called a planet that it should stay what it is called. I do not believe that just because one day someone decides to make it a 'non' planet thatr it should loose its planet name.

    August 30, 2009 at 4:07 pm |
  227. Laetitia

To me, I think Pluto should stay a planet. It might not be close to the sun, but it does have the characteristics of a planet. It orbits around the sun. Pluto is the smallest and coldest planet out of the other planets. Technically you can live on Pluto but their are some drawbacks but its still considered a planet. Why shouldn't Pluto be a planet anymore, I mean it was already part of it, so why removing it now. Leaving Pluto a palnet would be a good decision

    August 30, 2009 at 4:15 pm |
  228. Alexander

I think pluto should be a planit because even thou its far out there, small, cold, and alone, it still orbits with the other planets in our solar system. Also it used to be a planet, why all of a sudden change it. Yes it has different charachterisitics but not everything is the same way. This also made alot of confusion. All this time we have been tought that there are nine planets in the solar system. Once youve been tought something at a young age its really hard to get it out. So pluto randomly being changed to not being a planet caused alot of confusion.

  229. juliette

In true honesty, i would have to disagree on pluto being a planet. it may rotate around the sun like the other planets but so do all the moons and asteroids. I know for a fact that we will not call all the moons and asteroids planets for many reasons, one being WE DON'T KNOW ALL THE ONES THAT ARE OUT THERE, and we certainly won't remember the names of all of them. So it's time to give up the habit of calling pluto a planet.

    August 30, 2009 at 5:16 pm |
  230. Nicolas

Pluto should be a planet, because it is in our solar system and it's not an asteroid. Also, it already has been classified as a planet before so why not keep classifying it as one? even though its small and cold at least its not made of gas.

    August 30, 2009 at 5:43 pm |
  231. Nicole

In my opinion, i think Pluto should still be considered a planet. It always has been, so why the sudden change? Apparently its just a small ball of ice which makes it different from the other planets but so what. It still orbits the sun elliptically like all the others. Venus seems to me like a big fire ball yet it is still deemed a planet. It is part of our solar system and it orbits the sun. Scientists say its not a planet because it hardly has any characteristics in common with the other planets but again, so what, all planets are different, pluto just happens to be a little more different. Plus how can they really know if that haven’t studided pluto much since it is far away?In any case, i believe Pluto should be considered a planet but i highly doubt that scientists are going to reinstate it just because they dont want to admit they were wrong, they dont want to confuse the public and they wont have to waste money on adding that in textbooks, etc.

In my opinion why all of a sudden should Pluto be removed as a "planet"? All of a suddent scientists believe that is is not a planet, why? What are the characteristics needed to be labeled a planet in the scientists eyes? I mean Jesus has not been proven to have existed yet we still believe that at one point he did. We have no apparent proof but we still have not banned the thought that at one point he did walk the earth. So now even with proof we want to banned Pluto? What's next?

i think pluto shuold be a plant because it might be a small one but it has very similar characteristics of a planet. for ex. it is round and gaseous. i think that they should go ahead and be a planet because they have classified it as a planet for so long and now they want to change it that makes it very confusing. that makes us think do they actually know what they are talking about after they have classified it for so long as a planet now they think they made a mistake after actually putting it into science books. i say if they were unsure futher study should have been taken place before teaching it to kids.

I think pluto should be a planet because it has been for a long time also, its always been known as the th planet.why all of the sudden they have to take it of. it dosent matter if they think its not. its always has been seen as a planet and looked liked one.they should research more and go find out if its actually one.because and every one elses opinon they also want it to be a planet. so i say it should be a planet.

I think Pluto should be considered a planet. For many many years people have known it as a planet until one day someone just said it was to small to be a planet. To me this sounds like a form of segregation. It’s just like if a really tall guy said that a midget couldn’t be classified as a person.

no pluto shouldn't be a planet!!!
although pluto revolves around the sun, pluto passes through another planet's orbit. the reason y they didn't consider it as a planet)
because of this, there are hundreds more of celestial bodies to be considered as planets even though they pass through another planet's orbit.so therefore, to stop us from memorizing all this planets,
lets not consider pluto as a planet

In my opinion I think pluto should be a planet! It should be a planet because we as people grew up our whold entrie life knowing pluto as a planet! When I was little Pluto was my favorite planet because it was blue and little. So why should it be removed now? Little children that knew Pluto as a planet now have to learn their planets all over again! It dosen't make sense for pluto to be removed as a planet!

I believe pluto should not be a planet. Pluto is simply just a large star. Pluto is not even visible. Or even that significant to the solar system. Pluto is always the center of alot of controversy and i dont think people should even care.PLUTO IS A FORMER PLANET AND THATS HOW IT SHOULD STAY

I believe pluto should not be comment for the mere fact that its small and shroudy. Pluto should'nt even be being discussed its very tiny and insirnificant compared to the rest of our solar system probaly universe. Pluto should just be classified as a star and nothing else. I don't even know what the big fuss is about pluto does'nt even look appealing to keep on our solar system map and in our dictionaries. In all i dont think pluto should even be disscussed.

Pluto should NOT be a planet!! JUST BECAUSE IT ORBITS THE SUN DOES NOT MEAN IT IS A PLANET! We have asteriods, comets, and pieces of ice floating through space orbiting the sun, should they be called planets? No, because they don't fit the criteria or definition of a planet, like pluto. If it does not fit the definition it should not be considered a planet.
