Bike to School?

Posted: 09:26 PM ET

If you do, then tell us what you think of the electric bike you see on Tuesday.  Would you want something like that to get to school, or do you prefer pedal power?

Now I know that some of you guys are gonna think what I did:  It ought to be faster.  You might be more likely to buy it if it went 40 miles an hour instead of 20.  But this story isn't about speed; it's about getting somewhere without having to pedal.  And we'd like to know if that would make you any more willing to travel by bike.

I drive to school and walk home!

MrAndrewMan   April 21st, 2009 12:52 am ET

Its either walk or bike. All human powered. Save some energy and some money.

matt   April 21st, 2009 2:25 am ET

i think its a great way to get to work and back. My dad bikes to his work at lest once a week. I try to bike everywhere also.

Pierre-Jean   April 21st, 2009 2:34 am ET

We are reminded that the Artic ice would melt in 2 years if the gasoline is spent like the present state, For the love of seals, use this bike! It's good at speed, it doesn't let out gases...what could be better?

What does 'Feedback' means?

Pierre-Jean   April 21st, 2009 2:35 am ET

But if you can, be a Walkaholic!

Jing   April 21st, 2009 2:43 am ET

I'd like to go everywhere by bike, but I don't know how to ride a bike, haha

Dave   April 21st, 2009 4:40 am ET

Definitely this would be my choice because I won't need to worry about the gas. I would not need to worry about getting anywhere at anytime. For example if a friend of mine called me and told me to come to a party, I would then will not need to tell him taht I don't have a car home. But yes the one problem will this would be rain and snow, or in other states hurricanes and earth quakes... also what if it is so windy then what is the gurantee this bike will function.

cody   April 21st, 2009 8:47 am ET

I like good old fashioned pedaling. Whats the point of having legs if your not going to use them? Any way pedaling is also heathy. It strengthens your legs and helps you lose weight.

Steven   April 21st, 2009 8:50 am ET

Electric bikes sound like a really cool alternative to cars. I think kids would love to ride them places. They not only provide another way to get around, but they let you have fun while doing it. I would definetly get one if I could.

John   April 21st, 2009 8:51 am ET

Well the electric bike seems like a good investment, but the only thing i really worry about is looking like a dork while driving to my job. Can you imagine getting asked by a co worker "What do you drive to work?"
and then you say " I drive an electric bike that goes 20mph, it is almost like driving a scooter." then once again your co workers would laugh at you, like you don't have enough stress on your hands. So, no, i wouldnt be favored to riding an electric bike, eventhough it would help the environment.

Hunter   April 21st, 2009 8:53 am ET

I'd much rather ride my bike to school than have to ride in a car for 20 minutes. This new electric bike is great because now i can do this without as much energy being used in my efforts to get to school. Now I just need to live closer to school...

CJ   April 21st, 2009 8:55 am ET

I think that having an electric bike is much easier to get to school than have to pedal all the way. Also you will be going a little bit faster. So in my opinion its a good thing, but you need tot ake into consideration the batteries. If you don't dispose of them properly they may pollute the enviroment even more, but overall it's an excellent idea.

Riley   April 21st, 2009 8:55 am ET

If gas prices keep going the way they are my mom might not beable to bring me to school in the mornings. A bike would really help my parents with gas so I think the bikes are a goodc idea.

Sara   April 21st, 2009 8:58 am ET

I agree that it's good for the economy and the enviroment, but I personally wouldn't bike to school if my life depended on it. I'm too scared to get hurt in a automobile accident of some kind...until I start to see more bicycles on the road, I'll be just fine riding in a car to school and then carpooling home.

Guy   April 21st, 2009 8:59 am ET

First of all, if the top speed was any higher, I think the number of crashes in the U.S. would increase dramatically, because bikes don't have an age limit. Do you really think an eight year old kid should be riding at 40 mph. What a tree just happens to be in the middle of his path. I actually think it would depend on price, because I would pedal anyway because of the exercise.

Chad   April 21st, 2009 8:59 am ET

I feal that riding an electric bike to school does give energy efficency, but it won't help the environment a noticable amount unless the bikes were inexpensive enough for most average families to own one. Although I do think it is a good idea.

Adam   April 21st, 2009 9:08 am ET

I don't bike to school, because I live right next to it. But I would buy an electric bike to ride around town. I love feeling the breeze whistle through my hair... I mean the holes in my helmet.

Jenn   April 21st, 2009 9:23 am ET

An electric bike is good for kids like me. I'm 18 years old and have never learned how to ride a bike! This would save me a lot of time when i need to get some where in a hurry!

Darcee=)   April 21st, 2009 9:39 am ET

I dont bike to school but you would think that you would want the exercise!!!

CK   April 21st, 2009 9:50 am ET

Although it isn’t as warm and comfortable as a car, a battery-operated bike helps the environment and cuts a lot of pollution. As people who currently take regular bikes to work, it would save them sweating on the way to work and time getting there. It may not be too convenient for others, though, if they live very far away. It could be a pain, and might cause them to be late for work. Over all, I think it is a very good idea.

Chloe   April 21st, 2009 9:53 am ET

First of all biking to school would probably save you time depending on where you live. If you are in a crowded city, biking through traffic would easily save you time. But in a county like this it would take a heck of a lot longer, and then, whether rural, suburban, or urban, the risk of theft or vandalism is much higher as opposed to a car.

Brandy   April 21st, 2009 9:53 am ET

I would use the electric bike to travel back, and forth to school. I would because it helps the Earth. It does, because less pollutants are going into the atmosphere compared to cars. If every person rode one of these bikes to school then the effect on Earth would be astronomical.

Samantha   April 21st, 2009 10:03 am ET

I think that the electric is cool because we don't have to pedal. I think it would be kind of cool to ride to school with that kind of bike.

Shawn   April 21st, 2009 10:04 am ET

i would like to have an electric bike it would be fun

Anonymous   April 21st, 2009 10:04 am ET

I think that the electronic/petal bikes are a grate ideal and it`s grate for the environment to I would ride.

Drew   April 21st, 2009 10:05 am ET

I think having a electric bike would make thing a lot batter for me to go to school and back I would like to have a electric bike.

robby   April 21st, 2009 10:16 am ET

that would be cool ... and i wish i had a bike like that.

...the only problem my parents won't let me bike to school which is about 5 miles away.
anyways i would prefer the electric bike because.
1- you can just let the elctricity work it ,
2- you can pedal
that would be the bike for me...........

ALEXANDER   April 21st, 2009 10:41 am ET

yeah it would because it would be a lot more fun to do and you could show it off to friends by the way you should work on your jokes

kyladi   April 21st, 2009 12:36 pm ET

i think u should becuase it is not polluting the air and the kids are getting exercise

carley   April 21st, 2009 12:41 pm ET

i dont even have a bike

carley   April 21st, 2009 12:43 pm ET

i would end up falling of the bike and getting run over by a car if i rode a bike to school...

Kyladi   April 21st, 2009 12:52 pm ET

I think that walking to school or work is good, because you can get fresh air and/or excersice, while helping the environment!

ruby   April 21st, 2009 1:00 pm ET

that would be awsome!!!! cool

John   April 21st, 2009 1:12 pm ET

I think I would bike to work. It is good for the Earth and is probably cheaper! However I would only go on this superbike if I didn't have to pedal at all. If I could go there and back without pedaling I see no reason not use that bike instead.

Chaise   April 21st, 2009 1:20 pm ET

I think that those bikes would be awesome to have but the question is how much would they cost?? I think that if they were expensive then that might be the problem of lots of people getting them.....

James   April 21st, 2009 1:20 pm ET

yes this is what we need maybe we can make a new GM for bikes because the cars just aint working. Maybe we could not make them so pricey to because then it will be just like the old GM. And plus it would be pretty sweet if the school would let us

Jared   April 21st, 2009 1:21 pm ET

Yes I would love to have one of them to go to school. I like pocket rockets and that would be even better because I don't get to ride my bike a lot because I live in the country I usually just ride my four wheeler.

Nicholas   April 21st, 2009 1:23 pm ET

When I went to my old school I would ride my bike to it school everyday. Now I that I've moved I can't ride my bike to school.

Aryanna   April 21st, 2009 1:24 pm ET

I would hate to ride a bike to school it wouldn't be as fun as sitting with my friends on the bus talking and listening to music.

Cailie   April 21st, 2009 1:24 pm ET

Biking to school is a good idea Because it saves energy. I thing it's a good Idea because it will save gas and not pollute the earth. I would bike to school but I live like 10 miles away. At the same time the energy powered bike is not helping you loose any weight/ burn calories.

Mckenna   April 21st, 2009 1:24 pm ET

I think it's a pretty god idea. If you only live around the corner from your job why don't people just ride their bike instead of taking a car. I want one though it seems pretty fun.

Anonymous   April 21st, 2009 1:24 pm ET

I would love it. Plus no gas involved. Then I can pick up buddy's of mine.

Anonymous   April 21st, 2009 1:25 pm ET

I think it would be awesome to have an electric bike because now more people will ride bikes because it's less work and it's also saving the environment!

Travis!!!   April 21st, 2009 1:25 pm ET

I would ride or drive that bike to school. I would prefer electric powered bikes instead of pedal power.

Benjamin   April 21st, 2009 1:26 pm ET

I say this would be alot of fun. It would give you exicise and you can relax on your way to work or home.

Austin   April 21st, 2009 1:26 pm ET

I ride the bus to shool and back.

Alisha   April 21st, 2009 1:29 pm ET

OMG i couldn't do that...... I already have to walk to school..... even tho a ride now and then would be nice........

david   April 21st, 2009 1:29 pm ET

i dont ride my bike to school but if i got one of those fancy bikes iwould cause i dont live very far. Also i think that biger people that need to ride a bike would just get bigger.

Brittany   April 21st, 2009 1:30 pm ET

I would like the electric bike so I can take a break on pedaling.

Gracie   April 21st, 2009 2:17 pm ET

I would like too ride an electric bike to school but, money is one thing I don't have. Plus I haven't seen you dance in a long time Carl!

Maverick   April 21st, 2009 2:18 pm ET

I would not ride an electric bike, I mean where is fun in that? Besides, you get more exercise on a regular bicycle. Also how much do those things cost?! I probably couldn't afford one.

Mrs. Qualls class   April 21st, 2009 3:05 pm ET

Hey Carl, Mrs. Qualls thinks your awesome! We would love to get our feet on those bikes.

-Mrs. Qualls class

mikhayla   April 21st, 2009 3:13 pm ET

i think it would be good for people to bike to work to help the enviroment but i dont know if people would wanna do that because it would probably take longer and its easier to just jump in the car...

Ben   April 21st, 2009 3:16 pm ET

Well personally I ride my bike to school a lot. But that would be kind of cool. By your still indirectly polluting because to make electricity you have to burn fossil fuels.

mikhayla   April 21st, 2009 3:16 pm ET

the elecctric bike seems kinda lazy, and people need exercise so i think the pedal bike is better....

Pedro   April 21st, 2009 3:30 pm ET

I would use a electric bike to get to school quicker.

Schills   April 21st, 2009 4:00 pm ET

This is ridiculous. This bike is just going to make people lazy because they do not have to pedal. What is the point of buying a bike if your not going to pedal the bike. If people are buying a bike so that they do not have to pedal the bike, then they should just drive to work.

Utau   April 21st, 2009 4:20 pm ET

Well...I take a bus because I live to far away from the school, but I'd prefer regualr biking over an electric one, a regular one is proaably much safer and an electric bike seems lazy...people can get a lot more exercise if they just use a regular bike. And regular biking is better for the enviornment.

Rosemary   April 21st, 2009 5:43 pm ET

I dont ride my bike to school ,but if I had one of those I would ride my bike to school.

Alec   April 21st, 2009 6:52 pm ET

I would never ever use pedal power to get to school. Since there something called an electric bike now. i think the electric bike is lot better mostly for those who is lazy.

John   April 21st, 2009 10:06 pm ET

I'm homeschooled. A bike won't get me down the stairs very well – with or without an electric boost! No matter. :) Go electric!

Nikki   April 21st, 2009 10:40 pm ET

I think having an electric bike to ride to school would be awesome! You could go up hills easier and could get there a lot faster! I think whoever has one already, is very, very lucky! (I wish I could get one for my birthday!)

Joshua   April 22nd, 2009 8:48 am ET

I am 18 year old in high school and rding a bike to school would be great. But who me pidding is not the thing. Its that i have to go on a major highway to get to school, So going fast has to been one of the main things and there no way to piddle that fast, so electric bike as to go fast.

Carl   April 22nd, 2009 8:54 am ET

The whole point of a bike is to pedal. If you are going to use one of these electric bikes to get to school you might as well get a moped or something, They are probably cheaper and more effective. If people want to get a bike its because they actually want to pedal not just ride. If they wanted to ride they would get another type of vehicle.

Laura   April 22nd, 2009 9:06 am ET

think it is great that you can bike to school. It would be a lot healthier then riding in a car. In a car we are lazy. If we could get out and move around on a bike we would have a lot better life and the earth would be less polluted then it is.

Evan   April 22nd, 2009 9:12 am ET

I prefer to use a bike, in this way would get exercise (to stay in shape) and it would help to save the earth. Instead of being lazy and trying to act cool with an electric bike help yourself stay in shape and get a real bike.

Darcee=)   April 22nd, 2009 9:15 am ET

this is a joke I guess its ok if you are trying to save up gas money but come on you lazy people you can pedal!

Meghan   April 22nd, 2009 9:29 am ET

Not pedaling takes all the work out of biking. One of the reason people bike to school is take get a little bit of exercise. If you rode an electric bike, you wouldn't be doing anything active. You might as well be riding in a car. Our generation needs to get active.

Grace   April 22nd, 2009 9:38 am ET

This is an interesting way of getting to work and school but I live really far away from school. And you also need electricity to fuel the bike so there are some flaws... Why not just ride a real bike it saves electricity and keeps your body fit. And when you get to work/school you can put on some deoderint, or spray on some perfume/cologne.

kevin   April 22nd, 2009 10:14 am ET

I am going to clean up trash.

Jacob   April 22nd, 2009 10:58 am ET

Environmenatally, the electric bike is good. It would also reduce the amount of fuel usage that we might need for other important things. And personally, if the world were to run out of fuel, there would be a whole lot less fat people because they would have to walk to wherever they were going. So yeah, the bike is good.

Jacob   April 22nd, 2009 10:58 am ET

Beau   April 22nd, 2009 11:23 am ET

I use a mechanical pencil. I also give old clothes to the salvation army. My school recycles paper.

Chris   April 22nd, 2009 1:24 pm ET

I can't bike to school because I live 40 miles from school but I walk to people's houses within a distance of 14 miles.

Larsonsclass   April 22nd, 2009 3:54 pm ET

Yes, because it rides itself but its ugly.

Eagle   April 22nd, 2009 5:05 pm ET

If I had a choice of riding a bike between a bus I would chose a bike hands down because a bike is more ecofriendly and you lose weight so what is the point of having a electric bike you mize well ride the bus

Ericka   April 22nd, 2009 5:14 pm ET

When I was in 1,2,3 grade, I rode my bike to school. I would have gotten there a lot fster if the bike had been electric, but it was fun to pedal down hill(up hill wasn't as fun, and a lot harder).

George   April 22nd, 2009 5:27 pm ET

I'd do it. And after reading the past comments saying you can't pedal, that's a lie. Like in the broadcast for it, it has pedals on there, and she said you can still pedal. Anyways, yes I would. It can help you if you get tired, it's not much money (Proably 100-200 dollars. Regular price of a regular bike right?) and it helps the Earth. Totally good idea! :)

Chenille   April 22nd, 2009 5:53 pm ET

i thought biking to school was lame only because you had to put in work for it...but now since they've came out with the electric bike...il just sit back and relax...not too much or il crash!!!

Sitara   April 22nd, 2009 6:27 pm ET

That bike is cool! I really don't like pedaling so I would love that bike!

tino   April 22nd, 2009 7:35 pm ET

My friend went 18 miles per hour on his bike with his feet i would not get it.

Julius   April 22nd, 2009 11:36 pm ET

Being very close to my school, I can bike without an electric bike. However, I think the electric bike is a great motivation to start biking more and to start thinking abour electric power.

Josh   April 23rd, 2009 10:07 am ET

The electric bike is awesome. Thatʻs cool how technology can make a bike go without pedaling. That will make me want to ride a bike more because I can go a lot faster than usual. Riding a normal bike is fun but an electric one would be more exciting.

brady   April 23rd, 2009 10:08 am ET

I think we should bike to school. It can save money, and the O-zone layer. It could also bring down the obesity rate with the exercise.

Sarah   April 23rd, 2009 10:09 am ET

i would like to bike to school everyday, but my mom says that she'd be too worried even though we live just around the corner. but i have to cross two really busy streets and there was something on the news about a guy going around in a white van trying to get kids to come with him. soo i guess i understand...

Lee   April 23rd, 2009 3:24 pm ET

I think the bike is an amazing idea, and I'll have to see about getting one. While it doesnt max out at tops speeds. It seems perfect for commutes that are within a couple of miles. It's clean. Perfect for someone who's place of occupation isnt far. I think inventions or improvements like this should be promoted more.

Gabby   April 23rd, 2009 6:16 pm ET

Absolutely! This bike is a great way for transportation!

It's quick, eco-friendly, and gives you some exercise!
It would bring the obesity rate DOWN because of that exercise.

I live about 6 miles away from my school, so I couldn't really do anything except ride the bus (Which is a good idea too!) or get a ride from my dad, but it's still a great idea!

Tiffani   April 23rd, 2009 6:19 pm ET

i think it would be amazing you go zoom zoom zoom on the bike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shaun   April 23rd, 2009 9:17 pm ET

I thought that the power biking to work was cool and after the show our teacher looked up the price for one of those and they are about three thousand dollars each.

dieukhong   April 24th, 2009 3:35 am ET

To Pierre-Jean: "Feedback" means response.

mitchel   April 24th, 2009 8:37 am ET

i do not ride my bike to school and i dont plan on it

Kayla   April 24th, 2009 8:53 am ET

That bike was pretty cool that we saw on Tuesday's show. I think it would be quick, eco-friendly, and you would not have to buy gas!! The down side is that it only goes like 25 mph, sp when you are on the bypass and everyone is going 65mph they just might leave you in the dust....plus if you were running late, you'll be even later! But over all I think it could help out the economy.

Robert   April 24th, 2009 10:32 am ET

While electric bikes are a good convenience, that doesn’t make it much easier to get to where you need to go. If people want to help with carbon emissions and greenhouse gasses and even the economy, they would carpool or take public transportation.

Bob   April 25th, 2009 10:48 am ET

I think you should ride a bike to school because it will save energy. Some parents would probably want to jump in a car cause it is alot faster to get there unless there is traffic. :)

Mr. Brooks class   April 25th, 2009 11:03 pm ET

We think that is an excellent way to travel. You can get exercise by pedaling, but when you have to get somewhere far away you just stop pedaling and zoom... off you go.

Adrienne   April 25th, 2009 11:30 pm ET

If i wasn't so paranoid of bugs and other things like that, I would bike to school! I am all for saving the planet. Also if school wasn't so far away and the roads had bike lanes. Hey that's another problem: more roads need bike lanes so it would be possible to ride a bike to school and work without being hit by a car or something.

ruby   April 27th, 2009 12:53 pm ET

i ride the bus to school but riding that bike would be pretty cool. and fun

Ryan   April 27th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

RIDE BMX!

Brenda   April 28th, 2009 12:11 am ET

i think riding bikes to school is a good idea, because kids could exercic that way.

Jorge   April 28th, 2009 12:26 am ET

Really? In society today, people are getting more lazy! An electric bike is just slacker-y. ha ha!

Corbin   April 28th, 2009 1:34 pm ET

Sounds pretty cool i'd buy one!

michael   April 28th, 2009 1:43 pm ET

that sounds cool how much does it costs?

todd   April 28th, 2009 2:08 pm ET

yes i think i would by a bike like that because i live in a small town called elmira in souther ontario in canada and the biger city of waterloo is about
10 minutes away by car but it can be a pain to bike there so if i didn't have to peadle as much it would give my more freedom so ya i would buy rhat i guess

Caitlin& Bradley   April 28th, 2009 3:30 pm ET

Yes, we would prefer electric power because our school is far from where we live.

ashley   April 28th, 2009 3:33 pm ET

I would want to ride an electric bike because it is not a lot of work and because if you are going somewhere nice and your hair is fixed and u look nice when you get there you might look sweaty and your hair might not be nice anymore.

Lucy   April 29th, 2009 6:07 am ET

I would rather ride a normal bike to school
It is so crowdy! I would bump into someone!

Hailey   April 29th, 2009 8:09 am ET

Well I don't bike to school all the time but if when I start again I would defiantly ride on one of those!!!

Kaitie and Brenna   April 29th, 2009 9:23 am ET

We would rather use the electric bike. You would get to school faster and you wouldn't have to use as much strength. Also you wouldn't be tired and sweaty when you get to school.

Sarah   April 29th, 2009 12:40 pm ET

Hey Carl your awesome just like Fridays!!! OMG I want one of those bikes!! Does it come in neon yellow? Pink?

karen   April 29th, 2009 2:11 pm ET

Well i thought that the electric bike was pretty nice. I'd say that would be alot more resourseful and helpful to our planet. Even if you like to pedal you could because it's like any other bike. So i say its a good idea!! ^_^

Cynthia   April 29th, 2009 2:14 pm ET

Right now I am an eighth grader and next year I will be in high school. My dad cannot drive me to school next year, and it would be a really long walk to get there if I were to walk. So, I will have to take the city bus everyday. Uggghhh, I really, really, really don't want to but it is really my only choice. The thought of buying an electric bike sounds cool, but those things don't go very far without dying. My younger brother has an electric scooter he bought from my cousins friend, and he never rides it because he can't go far at all before it needs charging.

Plus, at the school I am going to for high school, you are required to wear a "professional outfit," exceot on Mondays which is "free-dress day." Anyway, I would really not want to ruin my nice clothes riding (or driving) to school everyday on an electric bike. Although, I could wear something different to school and then change into my "school clothes" when I get there. Hmmmmm.... I'll talk with my dad about it. Though, he'd probably make me pay for it (or at least most of it) myself.

Otherwise, I think it's a good idea for people to start walking, riding their bikes, and taking public transportation anyway, so, this I guess is even better. But, it also does take the "exercise" part of it out, because a bike is used to peddle. Every once in a while, I would maybe use an electric bike (becuase they're super fun!) but for now I'll just stick with my normal bike.

Michael   April 30th, 2009 8:44 am ET

I wouldn’t always use the electric power on the bicycle because it would defeat one of the purposes of a bicycle, getting exercise. It would make going farther, easier on your bicycle as you could switch to electric power once you get tired. It would be how I used a bike with electric power.

The electric bike seems like an amazing invention. It would increase transportation for those who cannot drive, or those who would like to conserve energy. The only problem with it is that it has the potential to make people lazier than they already are. There needs to be a feature which repuires you to pedal on your bike to produce more energy to your bikes movement

I think that is a great idea for the students to ride there bikes to school.
I have to go six miles to my school on my bike.

I think you ride a regular bike. It would never hurt to get a little exercise. Plus, those bikes can run out of power, but the normal kind can't.

i wouldn't like that at all i would prefer to walk or use a pedal bike. the reason is because i am trying to loose wait and that is not the way to go. that would make it easer to travel and i would use but not to ride to school i would like to ride it for a while and i think that is a pretty cool.

I think that biking to school would be great, if I didn’t live too far away. If I lived closer to my school, I think I would certainly bike to school, or walk at least. That would be fun, and also good for the environment. I think that it is extremely bad when people drive a car to somewhere close, instead of walking and it really is Über lazy.
