More Time at School?

No, I do not agree. Some kids can barely survive school as it is. And then the schools would have to pay for the extra hours thru payrolls and material costs. Not a good thing in a recession.

I think school days for middle school and high school should start later. Although the school days are long enough!! We all need are rest!!

I think having about 8 hours of school is enough for everyone! I would like to see Obama to spend the same amount of hours, he wants us to be in school, in the White House working nonstop. I don't think that is fair. Plus, EVERYONE needs at least 8 hours of sleep right?

I agree with President Obama because there are a lot of things for students to learn, for example environmental problems, world and US history, a legal structure, foreign languages and so forth. I think these are essential to live in a democratic state as a citizen. However, only extending time of classes doesn't make sense. Teachers should change their style to adjust new education system.

I've researched about countries which have a similar points with Obama's proposal. Almost 2% of that country's students die out because of stress, suicide and number of other greasly things.

I just hope our statemen aren't that willing to bam around.

I personally like school. I can study better if I am in school rathur than when I am at home. And I think some of my friends would agree on longer school hours because then they would have to go to less acadamies and that means less homework. Homeworks from school isn't that much. YES. Longer school days would accomplish so much. Children would have less time to get involved with drugs and illegal/immoral (by whoever's standards) acts. There was never enough time to finish what we were trying to study and I don't remember how many times we did not make it all the way through the topics that we were told that we were going to discuss that year. With more time a discussion session could be added to the end of classes to make school more interactive and interesting.
Of course adding hours to elementary would be incredible as long as schools bring back recess and imaginative classes like art, music, and lots of gym classes to go with recess for the little ones. With longer days the kids could have the breaks that they need so that they can sit still better the rest of the time. If teachers didn't have to spend as much energy trying to get kids to sit still because the kids were burning off the pent up energy we could slow this push to medicate all the little boys because so many kids on ADHD meds are NORMAL. Little kids don't sit still well. It is a fact. Give them recess, play-time, and breaks and most will function better and longer days would allow for that. This could also help out parents everywhere if they no longer had to shell out so much money for babysitters or after school programs because they're kids get out of school 2.5 hours before they get out of work. We're still running off of the old system where the school expects mom to be sitting at home with nothing else to do but take care of her kids. (Not knocking those who do. If you have the time and money more power to you, but most simply don't.) Longer school days would help so much.

NO!!! no more school hours. I absoutly disagree. 8hours is enough. After all, all you do at school is play with your friends at recess. Some kids acturly think that an academy and home is a place for studing and doze during classes. It would mean more tests too! The school uniform is uncomfterble also. I think that the average school day is fine, although I wouldn't becuase I live in Vienna Austria. I am in an American school so it might be the same as when you are in America, but how will longer school days help the econemy if it makes parents pay more for school.

Today the biggest problem is that the school or college is not fun anymore. Like the teachers will give more homework to do or some good projects or research to do. I believe that today there is no life of a student out side of school as he has to do so much of submission each and everyday. On the other hand for some of the students things get piled up because they let. I mean to say is that some don't even do homework on the day it is due, some don't even come to school or even care a little bit. Where you see these type of kids everywhere but college. In this busy generation and this world we don't need anyhting extra.

President Obama needs to appoint a "blue ribbon" committee of educators from all levels (do not leave out classroom teachers) to re-construct American education. Only men and women in the trenches truly understand the needs of our childrren. Although well meaning, with no experience as a teacher, it is impossible for him to grasp the attitudes and goals of today's kids.

Also, as a 37 year social studies instructor, it is not clear to me why the federal government believes that it can mandate change without a constitutional amendment that moves the responsibility to educate from the states to the feds.

When you talk about change, schools are not the fastest in the world. We have had the same time schedule since 1900. I think we have increased the number of things we need to know since then. I think we need to add two more years to the k-12 and make it k-14. I also have no problem with a longer day!

We can agree with the longer school day so that we can get more done and gain more knowledge, but the longer school year is something we don't agree with. Our families live all over the country, and we need time to visit them. They're important, too.

8 hours is long enough for school. Who wants to be in school longer? If school was longer, the teachers would run out of stuff to teach. Besides, this might REALLY cut into summer vacation. Hey carl, i do not believe that this is a neccesary form of our tax spending money! students that don't get good grades need to go to summer school. The students that pay attention in class and get good grades should not have to go to school more. A longer day will only be beneficial if it is funded properly. Students today are not the same kind of learner that most schools are currently teaching to. Students need to be taught as digital learners. I think that a longer day of school would make kid's hate school even more, because most kid's as it is dont like to go to school! Most of the classes are extremely boring and kids sleep in them. A longer day would leave the students tired and it wouldn't be fair to those who want free time or do sports or activities after school. It would just be like a punishment. Students go to school for about 8-hours for educational purposes, if the students try their best they get good grades. For the rest who just go to school to have fun or passed are not interested with grades. By adding more hours to school days does not prove that grades or intellectually will improve. This is not including sports, clubs, etc....

Something needs to be done with the school system. I think that some people are just skating by in school too easily without even learning the useful information. Also, paying the best teachers more than other teachers makes more sense. It's not fair for someone to do their job exceptionally well and get paid the same amount as someone who does a mediocre job teaching.

I think it is a good idea to be in school more. You need to have more teachers to have smaller class. Now that is going a little unfair. Children need to have time out side of school to play. School hours should not be extended due to the fact some children get home at 7:30 due to parents working, if school was extended it could cause some children to only see their parents for only one hour. Also it would cause the school's to pay more for education and for learning materials and there is hardly not enough money for that. If they had money, they would want to save it because we are in a recession. Most children pay attention during school, why make them stay and pay attention even more? I know this would increase the education of America, but it could still backfire, everything we do has a good side and a bad side.

I disagree with President Obama. I think the school day is long enough as is. It's hard enough to stay focused for the 7 almost 8 hours of school each day. I play sports, and it's hard to go to practice or a game, and then find time to do my homework, and if they lengthen the day, then it will be almost impossible to get enough sleep, do all my homework, and maintain good grades.

i think that increasing school time is a bad idea because it is possible that if we learn to much in one day then that can create stress and then you wont pay attention so there was no point in raising school time

We spend atleast 6 hours each day locked up in school all day. We get only a half hour of exersize every day, witch is not enough for one day. Longer school days will wear us out and make us attend less. I think that if we had longer school days more people would most likely drop out. School time is needed, but is not manditory. Better teachers are more important because they teach us what we should know. Sometimes they don't, so extending days wouldn't help that much.

I think there is no more time needed in school because, since there is a problem with kids dropping out of school it wouldn't help do anything but make even more kids want to quit because of the increased time in the place they do not desire to be.

I don't like the fact of longer school days because we would not have sports at the end of the day and that will be a bad thing. I totally disagree with more time at school. Some people agree because they are intellectual and studious type, but some people are not all like that. Some don’t do anything at all in school which is like running a car wasting fuel for no reason. The only reason why teachers support this idea is because they want more money.

I disagree with barack on the longer school days. There could be a lot of cosequences to this. The amount of highschooloers or even middle schoolers who drop out of school becase they dont like it will deffinitley go up there will be alot more drop outs because they wont want to go to school this long. No, I don't like it because if there are longer school days people won't go to school. But longer school years are ok because I know people that go to a year long school and they say that its fun because they go to school for 2 weeks and get 1 week off. He says that the only down fall is that they don't have weekends off.

Schools are to long compared to other day activities. Even though school days are longer classesare to short. an example is math and science classes dont have enough time ot teach the whole days lessons.

I think that it would be an bad idea to extend the school day because when its longer by the end of the day we will be very annoying to everyone else and the teachers will be pulling their hair out.

I think school is importent but we need time off of school. kids need time off because we need time to do homework and time to eat we need good rest. More das at school wont help we need time to viset are family.

Making the school day longer doesn't necessarily mean we will learn more, especially for everyone who doesn't even like being here as much as we are now. It all depends on the student and how much we are willing to learn. Also, making tests harder might make students want to try less.

I think having more hours of school is only a waste of time.First of all bacause many students cant even stand the idea of going to school every single day even though its not that much time we spend at school. Students would stop going to school but what Obamma could do is have more hours of school for those who want to progress and for those who need help and want to succeed. As a country who's suffering as a whole in test scores, if more time is needed in the classroom, then so be it. We've got to put forth an effort, and we should support Obama's decision, even if it is a pain, if it will be beneficial for us in the future.

I dont think that people that got into harvard or yale needed a longer school day. they just studied like they should when they go home. They did their homework lie they were supposed to. I feel that the student day is long enough as it is. A longer school day is detrimental to both students and teachers. Student's attention spans are limited enough, as well as the fact that most students are sleep deprived. Adding time to the school day and more days to the school year will put undue stress on already stressed out students. As a teacher, the burnout rate for a teacher is already under five years. The pressure of a longer school day and more school days will lead to tensions in the faculty room and in the classroom!!!

we think, it should stay the same, because in our case we have jobs and other activities that are already acomodated to an schedule. Also we wouldn't have enough time to spend with our families. Spending extra time in school would just be working on the same stuff so it is no use. No way! Thats probably the worst idea ever. Already, most high school students have jobs. You go to school all day, then from school straight to work, get off work at about 12, then go home and do homework, then get to sleep about 1 or 130, and a longer school day would make that worst and take away hours of sleep we could have, therfore worsening our actual performance in school. This would encourage more students to drop out, and would hurt all students- its not a good idea.

I don't think school needs to be any longer than it already is. Kids are already overwhelmed with homework and sleep deprived a lot of the time. Also, most kids participate in sports, like me. I play soccer and am a gymnast and have practice everyday of the week and weekend. I have a very little period of time to finish my homework before my activities. If school becomes longer, we might have more homework and less time to finish it. I think longer school days will lead to more tired and stressful students and lower grades and tests scores.

Merit Pay!! Many kids are just happy to be at school. It's the safe place for them. We don't keep statistics on things like: single parent homes, divorce homes, parents that are addicts or alchoholics, kids that are vergally of physically abused. Most teachers are unaware of these things. The furthest thing from many of their minds taking a test. They just want someone to listen to them.

I feel as if the school day should not be longer because some if not most students already have a rough time getting up when they do and focusing all day. This is mostly because school starts so early and teens at the high school level age are not meant to get up that early. If the school day were to become longer students would not do as well in school because they would be too tired and worn out. the school i attend is Hempfield High School in Landisville, Pennsylvania and we have one of the longest school days in the state. Having said that i really i don't thin it is necessary to have longer days. Eventually it would put to much of a burden on the students and make them much more exhausted at the end of the day.

I'm a real supporter of O'Bama, but really, think about our social life Mr. President. If certain kids are getting bad test scores, you can make them stay after school toutering. I'm not a fan of school, but kids need a good education, but my school day is long enough.

In my opinion, this is a semi-smart move on Obama's part. He is trying to increase the amount of education we are getting. But I also think that this should not be done, I personally don't go crazy about school. So it should stay the same length, so we can have some time for family and friends.

I think this proposed bill is ridiculous. We already have a seven hr. day why do we need more time. The test scores are fine, why should the students who try suffer because of the students who don't try and bring the test score average down? I think for the teachers there should be a fixed salary. If they are great teachers and their kids test scores show they should be able to make more money for their great job, and for giving their kids the info they need and having it stick with them. I think this bill should just be thrown to the side.

I think that the school day is long enough, its going to cost more money keeping the schools open longer. The money should be put towards higher education and helping those students who aren't able to go to college, go to college. I understand that the economy needs the future generations to be more experienced and more educated but isn't that what college is for? I think its a little crazy that Obama is even considering this. Kids already have way too many things to do after school. In this recession some kids may have to work just to help their parents get enough money to make rent. We are at school long enough to begi with, about seven and a half hours. On top of that, most of the students here are sleep deprieved, due to studying, working, and families. So by the end of the day, most of the students are ready to jump out of their seats and run out of the building. The teachers, wo are just getting use to an 80 minute period, have had a hard time adjusting, and are in the same condition by the end of the day. So causing us to be here longer will only create tension inside the school building......

Over the years, we have tried to cram more and more learning into the same amount of time. Thinking that we can increase learning by taking a speeded-up assembly-line approach has weakened our country’s education system. No wonder test scores are down- many students are stressed out and under performing. Ditto for some teachers. Lengthening the school day and the school year could be beneficial if it’s structured in a way that promotes creativity and critical thinking.

I don't really think that it's a good idea to lengthen school days because students tend to tire easily. When you try to force them to do things like that, they end up spending more time at school and less time with their families or finding jobs. But I do agree that America needs to get educated. I think that as a more education impowered country, we will all stand united and be able to understand the situations of our nation. This advancement would be very beneficial to our middle class too and more students would be ready for college.

School days and years should NOT be longer. Academic classes should be longer and electives should be nonexistent, if anything must be changed. If President Obama feels that the education of US students must increase, there are other ways of doing that than extending the school days and years. Also kids who have D's AND F's should go to summer school. Personally, we would get bored and anoyed if the school day and year were longer and would preform worse than usual.

I disagree with President Obama, I think the school schedule is fine the way it is. I love going to school, however; there just doesn't seem to be enough hours in a day. I take drama classes and I don't get home until 7:00. So by the time I get home, eat dinner and get settled, I still have a lot of homework to do. I study and read in my spare time (which is slim) but it happens occasionally. Plus if you extend the school year it would mess up our tourism on the Outer Banks. People wouldn't be able to stay for the summer and rent houses. The lack of income would continue to hurt our economy!!! Now do we really want that?

I don't think that we should have longer school days because we would be too tired to do anything. By last hour we would be tired of being at school all day then I would just want to go home. But when I get home I would have to eat then go to sleep and that's not how I want to spend my day.

I disagree with President Obama because I believe that school days already are long enough. If students are in school to long then I think that we would get on our parents nerves by knowing so much. I think that more school days would cut out our summer and would make children really mad.

As a teacher, I can see the need to extend the school year or possibly change it to a standard that some districts have; 9 weeks on 2 weeks off, 9 weeks on, 2 weeks off. That way the need to spend up to 4 weeks reviewing in September would not be necessary. You would get the same amount of days off, they would just not be clumpted together. As to the lengthened day, it would only be good if it is a research backed decision.

I strongly disagree with Obama. Its not that we need longer days and years, we need better cirriculum. The stuff they are teaching us isnt at all necessary for the real world. If it actually counted in life I know that I would study harder(because you know I already do). But extending the hours and days isnt going to help because the teachers are just going to make the lessions extend they arent going to teach us anything new. I have no complaints. I find it refreshing he finds education an important and powerful thing. Before you damper my argument with how "unfair" adding hours is, hear my side of the story first. With my peers, who attend school with the only intentions to chat with friends, I find they take their right of an education for granted. I detest seeing my peers sitting there brainlessly spacing out, sleeping, and texting while their teachers put so much effort into a lesson. It really is no wonder why (the majority of) America's television shows depict a culture of uneducated individuals. This affects me directly, seeing students leave for school thinking they are wasting a day and wasting sleep. Some will argue the students don't require these additional hours. I dare to you to prove this. Prove to me you aren't my peers. My peers, who rather attend school to ask what people are doing on Fridays. My peers, who believe that education isn't nessisary because somehow they will become a celebrity and be rich. My peers, who walk through the halls just so they can eventually get home and sit before their gaming systems. There is but a sad minority left who value education, and thus a sad minority will agree this is necessary.

I don't think that more school is needed. The more you pay attention, the more you get out of it. The amount of days already instated are enough to get the job done.

I am a high school English and journalism teacher in Idaho. Teachers do not make much money, so if the president wants to make the school day longer, and have more of them, he better be willing to pay us more money. Teacher salaries should be increased to match the increased demand on our time.

No way Jose, if Obama does do that, that would mean less free time for the students, AND the teachers wouldn't be able to spend as much time with their families, plus, some students might not even go to school at all because they wouldn't want to spend that much time in a stuffy classroom. im a student in high school, and i get enough of being in boring class all day. Making it longer i think will make kids not want to go to school or just ditch classes. I think President Obama should think this over before he gets to caught up with kids staying in class longer.

We believe that the school day should not be extended for many reasons. Most importantly, there are activities that go on after school that help us become more well-rounded students. As long as children are staying active after school and getting their exercise, then school should end at the same time. Since most students have homework and activities after school, teachers should eliminate homework if the school day is extended.
We hope that president Obama thinks about this decision and makes a wise choice.

I think that it would be a good idea to add more time, but it is also taking a risk that more students would drop out because they are bored. I think it might help with students failing, but it might jsut make it worse....

I would say it depends how many hours we mean. Also, when school starts. I wouldn't mind if school started and ended later.
I would have to know have many hours you mean and how that would change the schedule and/or length of our classes.

I think making school longer would be a bad idea because half the reason that education is low is because of drop outs who think school is too hard and feel they cant make it, making school longer would make it harder and make them drop out faster and make others drop out as well. I'm homeschooled and I do the same amount of schoolwork in less time because I'm not goinig from class to class. Also, I get high grades because I study hard for my tests. What Obama really needs to do is get the schools to encourage hard work, diligence, and good principals. If the school did that, America wouldn't have so many high school dropouts. I think the reason our country's education standards have dropped so low is because our country doesn't encourage kids to believe in something worth while. well, when i was sitting in my classroom today, and we were watching ur show, and when obama said that he wanted longer school days, the classroom when crazy!!! everyone was yelling at him, saying where is mcCain when u need him, and all this other stuff. so, im sure u know what im going to say. i think we shouldnt because we ahve a lot of after school activities and then we still have homework to do, there is not enough hours in the day to do all of that. we need to consintrate on school, but getting out on the field and playing sports are alos important, so they balence out. there for, in we add mroe school hours, then that is just going to mess with everything. people will have lower grades b/c they didnt have enough time to do homework, and they have to be in bed at a certain time. some people get up at 5:30 to got to school, so u cant add hours in the moring!! we r fine the way we r right now. perfect amount of hours

Our class feels that our day is long enough as it is. If the school day was lengthened that would cause a number of issues. Children that already have a difficult time focusing for 55 minutes in one class would be exhausted by the end of a longer class period. It would cause more stress for that child, the other students and the teacher as well. A longer day would take away from evening family time and extra-curricular activities for students. From a teacher's perspective, a longer day at school would leave less time for our own families and the work that we already do outside of our work day.

I think the school days are fine were they are. If Obama does increase the school days then the US will see a definite increase in the Drop-Out Rate. The US is already one of the Stupidest Countries in the world, do we really want to be know as THE Stupidest Country in the world?

I do not agree with the longer school day/year. School is longer enough. to go to school for 6 hours and then go home and have 4 or 5 hours of homework is rediculous. Extending the school day wont really do much more for us. It will only create less time to do homework. Its bad enough that some kids dont learn anything sitting through an hour and a half class, and extending it wont help in the long run. I also think the drop out rate could increase majorly if this happens. If the school year gets any longer we wont have enough time to relax and chill before the next school. If this gets passed, sooner or later we will all probably be going to school year round, 6 days a week.

I know this applies to me but about the time spring break starts rolling around I'm getting sick of school and My A's start turning into B's and my B's to C's. Too much of anything is never a good thing. We already spend a ton of time in school and we don't need any more. A mom... I homeschooled my kids for three years to get away from the long school days. This year, I put them back in a school district with shorter days and they are doing much better than at the other longer-day school. We don't expect adults to work much more than 8 hours per day, why should we expect our kids to work longer? Oh, they already do... it's called HOMEWORK. 2-4 hours of it PER NIGHT! In communities where afterschool childcare is an issue, especially with the teen set, a longer day would be a lifesaver. BUT, it should be an opportunity for kids to complete schoolwork in a fun, relaxed learning environment, not heap more meaningless work on them. A longer school day and year would have to mean a different style of teaching and learning - is our country prepared for that shift? I already see so little of my kids because of school, why would I want to see them less?

Everyday, students get loaded down with tons of homework, especially if you take advanced classes. We as students struggle just to finish all of the work through the day, and it just keeps piling up. Students get tired the longer the school day goes, and starts losing focus in their work because of it. Teachers get worn out from teaching all day, and start slowing down by the end of the day. If we had longer school days, it would just be more stress on teachers and students, and make everybody even more tired. Being tired, would bring down test scores and grades which is exactly what President Obama wants to improve. Making school days longer is not the answer to that problem. Students will end up getting fed up and that will increase the drop out rate instead of decrease it. Students need plenty of time to do their homework after school is over, and if there was longer school days we would not have enough time. Plus, it would interfere with after school activities such as sports and clubs. That is why i think it is a bad idea for longer school days. thank you for your time.

From a parents perspective....I can't for the life of me figure out how Obama thinks this will help. What needs to be focused on is "STOP CUTTING BUDGETS FOR SCHOOLING". I can remember as a child having PE everyday!! My children have minimal physical activity during the day and one now has none at all. Obama you are putting a bandaid on a larger problem. It's also mind boggling that you think taking away from family time is a better consideration. Parents need to also get involved with their childrens schooling. This is a recipe for disaster and I feel sorry for the children that you are not allowing to be children....Activities are also important as well as family time!! I don't think more school time is the answer because a lot of schools have bad teachers who don't engage with students. A lot of them just walk in, tell kids to read some textbook for 20 minutes (while he/she sits there playing with an iphone), and then gives a test right off the bat. And if President Obama just adds more school time, it'll just be more time wasted in the day!

p.s I go to private school and went to public school. Even though you have to pay, students learn much more in my school, plus its real fun!

I believe that we don't need more school. After a certain amount of time kids just get bored of school and need a good long break. It will help them in the long run.

i think what President of Obama is doing to the school system is great idea we go for three months and then we get one month of school off. With the United States Education System at the way it is we don't have some of the worlds smartest youth and by changing the school system like this we could defiantly improve the intelligence of Americas Youth

I have to say that school is fun, especially because you get to learn more and more every day, and you get to hang out with your friends at recess. Well, at least in elementary school. Me and the rest of my Civics class was debating about this. We already believe that school is long enough. Our teacher, Mr. Dalman, believe we do need a longer school year, just not make the days longer. We all finally agreed to 9weeks of school, then 3weeks off, 9weeks in, 3weeks off, ect. until summer time. We were debating this for like 20 mins into class and while going over things the subject kept coming back up.

Really, What is the use in making us go to school longer? The students would only get upset and not give any effort because they are in protest of longer school days. I think the regular length day gives us a chance to go home, study, do all of the tons of homework we have and let what we learned sink into our brains, not to mention the chores and responsibilities many kids have after school. I think that Mr.Obama just needs to cool his jets and tackle the important things like THE ECONOMY before he jumps into much more. Before he knows it he will be so deep in tons of different projects that he will have a mental breakdown. I think school is already too long! I already have to get up at six- thirty in the morning and not go home until three o'clock and when I do come home I have to do homework!! I don't need ANYMORE school. My mom said if the school years are longer, she will home school me.

This is a good idea but only to a limit. It shouldn't be pushed so much that it stresses students but enough to let have more time for explanations, questions, and instructions so they can better understand what they need to learn.

I love school! You get to spend more time with all of your friends. Most of the kids in my class would disagree but I can barley stand being away from my friends over the weekend so more school would be like heaven!!

we spend plenty of time in school as it is. 8 hours a day for 9 months is enough for any child, teen, or young adult. our summers are short as it is, and winter and spring break arent really a break when you have testing right when you get back. i may be one in a million but at least i can speak up and say that i know im not the only one who doesnt want to spend my summer or early fall in school....2 months of summer break really isnt enough.

I don't think that kids should have more time at school. Yes, we have a lot of vacation time but that's to relax our minds and spend a little time off work. It's not a job, but kids do deserve some time off. Plus, we have school five days a week, eight hours each day. I do not think that making school longer with more days would be fair to some kids. How are we going to have time to do after school activities if the school day is longer? There won't be enough daylight hours left in the day and we can't make the day longer. i think that President Obama is taking way to much into his hands...we were born with freedom and just because we are teens and young children. Dont justify us sitting in our classrooms for an extra 1 or 2 hours. We like our free time.. and i speak for many youthful people when i say it is robbing us of our life.

Our school system runs from Labor day to about the second week in June. We have breaks at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter, and a few other days here and there. Our school days starts at 0725 and ends at 1425. For me, high school was always looked forward to because of the responsibilities, and the privileges that came with it. I also enjoy starting so early, and getting out with some time left in the afternoon that allows everyone to do something after they finish with their homework. It may not sound like we are in school for a long time, and to most adults it doesn't seem like a long time, however, to the students, it seems like a lifetime. I think that extending the school day would not be beneficial towards education. We may be in school longer, and therefore have the opportunity to learn more in a given day, but I know I can speak for myself and some other friends when I say we burn out from being there so much. In a given day, a person can only focus on certain tasks for so long, much like people who have jobs, that are done with school. Your average person works a 8 hour day, goes home, and relaxes for the next day, so that they can give their job the utmost concentration that they can. If that person suddenly had to work say 10 hours a day, they can't do as much at home with their families, and would have to put aside more time for resting, to reach the level of maximum capability. I believe its the same situation with students if the school days were to be extended. Students wouldn't be able to have as much time out school to do homework. When I come home from school, I can't do my homework right away, because I just spent the entire day doing just that, work. Taking some down time, just to relax and unwind allows me to be able to do my homework. If the school day was extended, that down time would decrease, effecting my ability to concentrate and do my best on my work. I believe my sleep time would also be compromised. These are just a few reasons why I feel that the length of a school day should be left as is.

I don't think we should have longer school days unless you want to stay at school, but I don't think a teacher or the prez should be able to make you. Then we might get way more homework and sometimes we don't even have enough time to study now.

I agree with Mark. How are we going to pay for the teachers extra time in school? Some states have already had to lay off thousands of teachers because of no funds. Also, a full week for adults is considered 40 hours. A school week should definitely not be any longer than an adult work-week.

Personally, I believe that the solution is not to extend school hours, but to make the activities in school more rigorous temporarily. This is because that would benefit the kids who are smart but need more work, and identify the kids who cannot work at that level. Then the kids who could adhere to the new level of work would stay there, and the ones who could not keep up could go back to their original work level. The most common problems with education these days are that they are making the difficuty able to be done by the students of the lowest level, and therefore are making it so that the kids who may eventually find the cure for cancer are not learning, but merely just gliding along with only one hundreth of their brains paying attention, so they may not be able to contribute anything to society later in life because in their early years they weren't learning anything.

School should provide students with more opportunities to intercact with community than with school. The attendance communities will help them to have a wide range of perspective, and it will be desierable situation from viewpoint of formation of personaliry.

I think that the school days are already long enough. The school days should be at most 30 minutes, enough time to get directions about new work and then do your homework in class. Enough of this stacking kids with homework crap every single night. : ) Also with that 30 minutes, teachers could even spend 20 of that showing the new work and then doing problems from that work showing us how to do it. Then you could get the last 10 minutes to start homework and you will still not have that much homework after. We already get out at three thrity and that takes alot of time out of out personal lives. school is alright once and a while but still no.....if we have longer school days some of us (me) would get sick of school and would burn down the school...well at least i would...no longer school days!!

While it would give students more time to get homework done, we wouldn't have alot of time at home. But we wouldn't need as much time becuase we wouldn't need to finish our homework because we would have done it at school. How would we fill the time we don't already use? Even thought it would give me more time to finish work i don't want a longer school day because some students might have sports or extra-curricular activities and they, too, would have to end later.

I think that it's a good idea and bad idea to have more time at school. First of all, some kids might have some after school activities and they might just have to miss it because of the time. But, we get more education so we can be more smart for the next grade we would be heading into. It would also help those who are getting bad grades. You could also have some more time playing and hanging out with friends as well! All of this, but in my opinion though, if we have longer school days, we HAVE to have longer recess durations! Overall, I would say for me it's 50-50.

If we, as the United States, choose to lengthen our school days and add to the amount of days in the school year, we will not be guaranteeing quality. Adding more hours to an unproductive and below standard classroom won't change the quality of the education received therein.

More time in school would not help us as students, it would hurt us. Students spend the majority of their days in school as it is. If we increase the time we spend in school, activities like sports will be cut, along with a high rate of part-time job losses. Also, many students would spend less time with their families, a crucial piece of character developement for the real world.

I also think that if you make students go to school longer they would get worse grades beause it is hard enough to do all of your homework in the little amount of time you get to do it at home.

I think that longer school days aren't good for a lot of reasons. One, it is proven that after 6 hours of school, we stop concentrating as well, I think it's 6 hours, I'm not sure. Two, even when we're in school, we're still learning A LOT!!! Maybe even more then in school. Three, we do have lives that we need to live, let alone all the homework we get! Four, as important as school is, we also need breaks from work.

Longer school days are unnecessary because they will not help with any of our current problems. The extra money that teachers get pay will have to come from somewhere, so all we're really doing is moving the debt, not illuminating it.

I think that is stupid because we spend almost all day at school and if it gets longer I will not go.

There are two charter schools in Philadelphia who incorporate longer school days and Saturday School. Saturday School is for struggling students. These students also get mandatory tutoring. President Obama may not know what is really happening in the school!!!!!!! Just making the hours go up doesnt' really mean that the quality of the education will go up nor the relationship between friends become better. Also, about his speech that the world requires schools to expand the time that students at school is with no PROOF or EVIDENCE. But the most shocking thing was about his example of South Korea. I researched his speech and he mentioned South Korea's education policy is better because the students spend more time at school. But as a South Korean High School Student myself, I don't find that very effective as well as my classmates. My mom works at the elementary school and then comes home and cooks us dinner. I am a very strong supporter of President Barak Obama, and I think that his proposal to lengthen school is a very smart idea. A couple weeks ago we were talking about shorter school days to save money on buses and everything and now we are talking about longers school days i think we should have shorter school days not just because almost everyone hates school ,it saves money and way easier on the economy.

Longer school days is a terrible idea! Most students are tired & shut down later in the afternoon. Our school currently gets released at 4:15 which is way too late. I definitely notice more participation and activity in the morning hours.

I think it is a good idea. It gets students ready to work for more hours a day. Teachers also seem to need more time to teach. The only probelem would be that the teachers may run out of things to teach by the end of the year.

Personally, I think that six or seven hours of school is enough work in a day for a student. Also, keeping a student in school for more time is depriving them of having a social life at home especially for those with long bus rides. If Obama were going to extend the day to let's say, 5: 30, some kids wouldn't even get home until six, or six thirty. It's not right to make a student work longer at school because then they are torn away from life at home.

Longer school days would accomplish so much. Children would have less time to get involved with drugs and illegal/immoral (by whoever’s standards) acts. There was never enough time to finish what we were trying to study and I don’t remember how many times we did not make it all the way through the topics that we were told that we were going to discuss that year. With more time a discussion session could be added to the end of classes to make school more interactive and interesting.
Of course adding hours to elementary would be incredible as long as schools bring back recess and imaginative classes like art, music, and lots of gym classes to go with recess for the little ones. With longer days the kids could have the breaks that they need so that they can sit still better the rest of the time. If teachers didn’t have to spend as much energy trying to get kids to sit still because the kids were burning off the pent up energy we could slow this push to medicate all the little boys because so many kids on ADHD meds are NORMAL. Little kids don’t sit still well. It is a fact. Give them recess, play-time, and breaks and most will function better and longer days would allow for that. This could also help out parents everywhere if they no longer had to shell out so much money for babysitters or after school programs because they’re kids get out of school 2.5 hours before they get out of work. We’re still running off of the old system where the school expects mom to be sitting at home with nothing else to do but take care of her kids. (Not knocking those who do. If you have the time and money more power to you, but most simply don’t.) Longer school days would help so much.
