Thoughts on Michael Phelps

The current controversy involving Olympic champion Michael Phelps started when a British paper published a photograph of Phelps appearing to smoke marijuana at a party in November.  Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, and whose endorsement deals are worth millions, has admitted to "regrettable behavior" and apologized.  He says he acted in an "inappropriate way" and promises "it will not happen again."

The U.S. Olympic Committee said it was disappointed with Phelps' behavior, adding that the swimmer "is a role model, and he is well aware of the responsibilities and accountability that come with setting a positive example for others."  The committee added, "We are confident that, going forward, Michael will consistently set the type of example we expect from a great Olympic champion."

Now, we'd like to hear what you say.  It's easy to look up to someone like Phelps; no one is better than he is at his sport.  But if he was using an illegal drug, as the picture suggests, does it change your opinion of him?  Do you think it should?

    Dear Carl Azuz,

Thats not right for a person that won 8 gold medels to be acting like that i think he is putting a bad example for us kiks we have D.A.R.E.at maryville intermediant and we know what to do and what not to do i think micheal just lost his populerity.

Normally when we notice someone does something well we look up to them. If people looked up to Phelps because of his swimming skills they should continue to: nothing has changed for him in that catagory. However, I don't think it was a good choice for him to smoke marijuana when so many view him as a role model.

Over the summer, Michael Phelps did everything with determination and skill – an example to us all. Hearing this, now I'm not so sure.

What Phelps did was wrong, but I think he did deserve those medals. He worked hard for them. Let's hope he's sincere and not a liar.

Yes, it most definitely does change my opinion on Michael Phelps. First of all, he is setting a horrible example for kids who aspire to be like him. And second of all, who is stupid enough to take pictures of themselves smoking what appears to be an ILLEGAL drug??? I think its great that he apologized, but sometimes, apologies don't cut it.

I am Michael Phelps' biggest fan and when I heard about these pictures I'll admit, I was disappointed. It's hard to see someone you look up to do something wrong. I still think he's great and since he apologized for his actions, I think he should be forgiven by all.

Nah. Everyone says don't judge a book by its cover. If he says it wont happen again, then i believe him. Just look at the great acomplishments he's already done!

No, because he says "it will not happen again" so I believe him. A lot of people make mistakes by taking illegal drugs, he is just one of those people.

I was horrified, a great swimmer like Phelps smoking a drug!
I have a feeling that he will keep his promise. Not because he's a great swimming hero, but because I take his word, he's the cool marine dude who shines America!

When Phelps decided to compete in the Olympics, he became an American hero. When he won eight gold medals, he became a legend. However, all legends come to an end; Michael Phelps, by his poor choices, ended his legend prematurely. People lose gold medals for steroid abuse. Drug abuse should be no different. Gold medals, after all, shouldn't put someone above the law.

If everythings gonna be okay, after someone made a huge mistakes and is forgiven becasue he/she apologize. then why's law or standards of behavior exist?

I think that it's sad that he made the decision to smoke an illegal drug. So many kids look up to him, and he's a role model to kids. He was a great swimmer, and others swimmers followed him and looked up to him. I hope that he keeps his promise and doesn't do it again! Everyone makes mistakes, so I think that we should forgive him, but if it happens again...

It does change my opinion on Phelps, because that is a really dumb thing to do, but everyone makes mistakes and he deserves a second chance at regaining his trust from Americans. At least he admitted it and didn't lie, that would have only made his problem worse.

    February 3, 2009 at 8:04 am |
  22. rachel

I think he should get a second chance. People make stupid mistakes all the time and he just happens to be the one who gets caught. If he said it will never happen again you should trust him. If he makes the mistake again then you know he cannot keep his promises! Wow one famous person get caught. If America knew how many celebrity's do drugs we would be shocked!

He said it wouldn't happen again and he set big goals to win the Olympics and this is a tiny goal. I think he means it when he says it wouldn't happen again. He admitted it so hes not denying it and I think hes serious and he can make it so he doesn't do it again. He set big goals last year and achieved I think he can achieve this too. I think hes serious.

We think that Michael Phelps has a right to do this. Only because all he has been doing is swimming and he has so much money now, that he doesn't know what to do with it. Now that he's out of the pool, he can't get away from people and camera's being all up in his business. We think people need to just leave him alone so that he can live his life.

So what if he smoked marijuana, he just got done with a big stressful time in his life and made a name for himself. Maybe he just wanted to sit back and calm himself down for a few. Once you do something as great as what he has done, then u can talk.

Well, Michael Phelps never asked to be a role model for one. Yes, I think it's wrong that he let down a bunch of kids that looked up to him. But there are a lot of celebrities out there that also do illegal things, and most of those don't change our opinions of them. Ringo Starr, anyone?

I think the famouse should be responseble for what he did, so what he apologized was good, concerning about his reponsibility. However, if he makes mistake again, the public would be disappointed and would not believe him again. Therefore, He should be more careful about his act and give his good example to people.

  37. CJ

.I think he should lose his swimming career because if he does those drugs a lot he won't be able to breathe... he will gasp...a lot.He will be swimming and have to stop to gasp for air.So I think that Phelps should lose his swimming sponsers and his spot in the Olympics

    February 3, 2009 at 8:52 am |
  38. Chad

I believe that seeing your role model, if it happens to be Phelps, doing an illegal drug should lower the esteem you hold them at. I never really had much of an opinion about Phelps, but I'm sure many people did lose some respect for him. I think you should lose respect for a athlete that uses drugs. I mean its common sense.

    February 3, 2009 at 8:53 am |
  39. cody

yes the drug's illegal but people do it all the time. the only reason everybody's making a big deal is because everybody watches him.
but he should have identified that everybody watches him and not have done it. in my opinion he had a right to do it.

    February 3, 2009 at 8:57 am |
  40. Anabel

To believe that somebody like Michel Phels would smoke drugs is just unbelievable! He is the winner of 8 gold medals in the Beijing Olympics, a role model to so many kids and adults, he is the one who beat the world record! And to think that he did drugs, well, it does change my opinion of him. But to believe that he won't do it again, I kind of doubt it. You do it once, you might do it again, but I take his word for it.

    February 3, 2009 at 8:57 am |
  41. hunter

If you have to do drugs to win a race what kind of athlete does that make you? Sorry doesn't change anything if you steal a car or rob a bank why won't it if you do illegal drugs? From this experience he dropped steeply on my rep. list.

    February 3, 2009 at 8:58 am |
  42. riley

The fact that he is an Olympic swimmer disappointed me. If it was drugs I only have one thing to say, "YOU IDIOT. If you were arrested for that there goes your career. I'm not much of an Olympics person, but I didn't much like him anyway. This just makes me not like him MORE!!!!!

Sure, he made one mistake, but what Phelps has to realize is that he is a role model for so many people and anything he does affects those people as well, especially the younger children. This seriously lowers my opinion of Phelps. I just hope nothing like this happens again.

It doesn't change my opinion of him, then of course i never had much of an opinion of him. It shouldn't change your opinion about him either, look at all of these bands that are doing illegal drugs, yet we hold them highly. Why do we always hate athletes for doing it yet we love bands

I think that Michel Phelps can do what he wants in his personal time if he wants to smoke weed he should be able to it is illegal and if he wants to take that risk he should be able to but it just shows that you can win 8 gold medals and still be a normal person and smoke weed

Come on CNN cut the guy some slack before this he was americas golden and boy and know that this picture has surfaced people want to pass judgement on him, that is wrong, plain and simple. the facts are america loved him beofre and this incident shouldnt change anyones veiw on him, i mean he is still the same guy he was before he is still a legend i think the world should stop riding people and trying to find every little thing wrog with someone and RELAX.

I belive that micheal should be able to light up if he wants to. He obviously has been the greatest olympian of all time so if anything I think that he deserves the right to. If people are so scared that he is a role model then why would you even talk about it on TV?!

    February 3, 2009 at 9:05 am |
  52. Jared

This doesn’t change my opinion about Michael Phelps because what he does in his free time is his own business. I mean he is one of the best athletes and has been training for so long. Just give the guy a break! If I were him I wouldn’t want people in my business all the time. If he wants to smoke after winning all those gold medals then I think he can because I don’t see anyone else breaking all those records.

    February 3, 2009 at 9:05 am |
  53. elisa

What happened does not change my opinion on Phelps at all (maybe because I don’t know much about him) but I do see how it can change many people’s opinion on him. As an Olympic champion he should know that he’s a role model to many people including children. When he smokes weed and the public finds out about him, kids will start to think that smoking weed is okay. They’ll probably start to think that if Phelps does it and still becomes an Olympic champion than smoking it probably isn’t that bad for you.
Hopefully children know better than that or will be thought better. I don’t think the event will cause too much damage. People’s opinions on Phelps shouldn’t change. Everyone’s done something they regret, he’s a normal person too, it happens to him.

    February 3, 2009 at 9:06 am |
  54. Jesse

Although Michael Phelps was caught with an illegal drug, it doesn’t matter to me since to me, he’s just another human being. Every human being that makes mistakes and that makes bad choices. As long as he didn’t cheat in his sport, I would say, “do what you want.” Maybe people should stop seeing him as a role model if his action was so low.

    February 3, 2009 at 9:07 am |
  55. Kayla

Yes, it changes my opinion about him very much. He has many fans, even young kids, and doing drugs is not showing them that he is a good role model. I think he made a mistake that he can correct and if he chooses to do it again, thats on him, let him mess up his career. It is great that he apologized, but just imagine how many fans he has lost, because he chose to do something very stupid.

    February 3, 2009 at 9:07 am |
  56. Ryan

I think that Phelps did not make a good choice when he began to smoke illegal drugs. He is an Olympic gold medalist. He probably has the money to buy tons of these types of drugs, but why would he smoke it? He is extremely successful in the pool and has gotten some pretty big commercial offers. He is very successful and i don't see a reason why he would smoke illegal drugs.

He is just a man and people make mistakes. But for someone that so many people look up to to make a mistakes like that is horrible. But as people we should be able to forgive him.

    February 3, 2009 at 9:11 am |
  59. Colin

Look. I've seen comments here at this blog and I was horrified. You guys actually forgave Phelps? Yeah. I can't underestimate his great deeds during the Summer Olympics. But this guy was caught using drugs! And marijuana for that matter. I think we should think about getting him suspended from the national swimming team. He gave America a national shame. Drug uses should never be forgiven, even for national heroes.
(In some countries, no matter how high or low a person's position is drug usages are considered a life in prison. Phelps should be thankful he wasn't born at THAT countries.)

To an extent it tarnishes his image for me personally. But we all know how the press somehow pressures young stars into doing stupid things. No doubt it was dumb and irresponsible on Phelps's part but he's a young guy and he'll learn.

    February 3, 2009 at 9:11 am |
  61. Deanna

The simple fact that the press should stay out of peoples personal life and stay on topics where they are wanted. I don't think that it is right for people that are famous or have done good things to have people breathing down there back all the time. I think that it would have been all good for him if he was smarter about it and did the things he did with people that he really trusted and knew closely so that things wouldn't have seeped out into the news. I think that he should be able to have a break because he has done so well in his swimming career.

    February 3, 2009 at 9:13 am |
  62. CK

That's not the best idea on his part. If he wants to be a role model and make a lot of money, he should definitly watch himself. Everyone makes mistakes, but he should be more careful about what he does, ecspecially having the popularity he does now.

    February 3, 2009 at 9:13 am |
  63. Jonathan

I think that it was very stupid and immature for Michael Phelps to do drugs. Being in the Olympics is a privilege. Most people work as hard as they can for half their life to be in the Olympics or to even go to states. I know how hard it is to make it to States because I have been wrestling since the beginning of this school year and it is not as easy as it looks. But I have gotten 2 wins. But I know from experience if I got to States in Wrestling there is no way in heck I would jeopardize it by smoking dewbies or drinking.

    February 3, 2009 at 9:14 am |
  64. Colin

But I do believe Phelps will keep his promise, both for his morality and considerable amounts of money that will be lost if he is found doing ilegal stuffs again.

  65. Eddie

Now I think he has the choice to do what he's doing, but this choice might haunt him in the future. Many people have made good and bad choices he just has to learn from his mistakes...

  66. Jon

It probably hurts his image, and it will probably make it harder for him to get sponsers. Many people look up to him, and when they see him doing drugs they may think it is cool to do them. I am disappointed in him even if he is an American hero.

Everybody makes mistakes, some bigger than others. Phelps made a bad choice and he has to face the consequences for his actions. But he apologized and is regreting his decision. Other than this setback, he is my role model, and everyone elses too.

I think that Phelps should have not done what he did. It does change my opinion on him .It changed a lot of people thought of him. It could change his reputation. He made a bad choice. He is not making a good influence to the people that look up to him.

My class voted, 5 said that Phelps picture changed their opinion of him, while 11 said the picture did not change their opinion. We all agreed that while he did use an illegal substance, he still is an amazing athlete. And this substance had no effect on the outcome of the events this summer (although it does effect your intelligence).

I think that micheal phelps should at least be a little punish for smoking and drinking illegal drugs and his punishment is that he goes to jail for 1-4 weeks and be in a hot box for 3 days.

no because people make mistakes and that is one of the big mistakes that he had made. also i think that it is kind of funny because i did not think someone like him would do something think that.

My thoughts on Michael Phelps smoking marijuana is him thinking he can do what ever he wants just like Michael Vick with him dog fighting. There just one thing to say is who cares if your a pro athlete if you do some thing illegal l you will be caught and put in jail.

WOW i would think that a person that little kids look up to shouldn't be doing that kind of stuff and it still surprises me that he has been doing that kind of stuff and no matter how much he says that it won't happen again he is still addicted to it and he won't be able to stop.

  91. br00ke

Yes it dramatically changes my opinion of him!!! I thought he was supposed to be an all american hero and from what I can see american heroes don't do illegal drugs or participate in illegal activities!!!

  92. Mitch

My thoughts in Michael Phelps smoking marijuana is him thinking he can do what ever he wants just like Michael Vick with him dog fighting. There is just one thing to say is who cares if you are a pro athlete if you do some thing illegal you will be caught and put in jail.

I think Micheal Phelps should loose his job for that problem... its hard to believe that he did it. 😦

If people see up to Micheal Phelps to much to where they do everything he does. They might do the same...

Wow, I can't belive it ! People look up to him why would he do that. He was just so awosome he was the best swimmer alive but Michael Phelps you're so not awosome anymore.

No. I think people should forgive him. It was a mistake and everyone makes mistakes. I do believe that he is truly sorry! GO PHELPS! And everyone who doesn't forgive him... all I say is THAT'S YOUR PROBLEM! I ♥ PHELPS!!!!!!!!!

I think that he is sorry for using the drug because now people might not look up to him as a role model. I think that he should have thought before he did it but everyone isn't perfect. I think he learned his lesson and now he won't do it again. I hope everyone forgives you.

    February 3, 2009 at 10:29 am |
  98. Leilani

I can't believe my eyes! How could he do such a horrible thing! I don't care that he said sorry and that he will never do it again. We don't know if maybe he's done it before. Maybe he even used drugs in the Beijing Olympics. I mean we don't know. How could a great Olympic swimmer like him go and do that! People admire him and now ever since the day he used the drug and people found out they really don't admire him as much as they use to now. If people still do then they should decide to choose a new idol cause this one has gone bad boy! Don't trust Michael Phelps any more! It's just not right to forgive him! Don't forgive him people he's just not right for him to do something bad like that!

We think that Michael made a mistake and hopefully he learned from it. Not all of us admire him, but our opinion of him has not changed for the better or worse as a result of his actions. He is still the greatest swimmer ever!

That wasn't smart for him to do that. He was lucky he's not going to jail. But I think he's fine is because he's famous and said he won't do it again, and I hope he won't.

Micheal Phelps is using DRUGS!? What's next? They're going to find out that Thelma Ruduolph was using steroids!? Seriously...he won't go to jail though for aleast a month, super-stars always get off easy.

No it does not. After giving our country such prestige, do we just put him down? We admire him for his achievements not his downfalls. Nobody is perfect!

  103. Michael

I think that he shouldn't get off that easy.We all know that he's going to do it again. So what's the point of leting him off the hook.He might not do it again but he might do some other illegal drug.He is famous and famous people lie a lot.Plus he's probally already hooked on the stuff.

I believe that Michael Phelps shouldn’t be attacked because of his drug usage. Taking drugs won’t affect his athletic career in any real way. People should still respect him for his swimming capabilities and focus less attention on what he does when he is not swimming.

    February 3, 2009 at 10:45 am |
  107. Devon

I really cant believe that he would do something like this. I think he could of done something better than just say "It will not happen again." What would make him do something like this I mean doesn't he know even how dangerous smoking a cigaret and that wasn't even what he did!!!

  110. Sean

To be honest with you it really doesn't surprise me. How many people that are as big of stars as he is there is a fairly large percentage who do bad things. Look at Santonio Holmes, superbowl MVP. He used to be a drug dealer. So people really shouldn't be suprised especially since he had a dui at the age of 19

    February 3, 2009 at 10:47 am |
  111. Allison

I think that he mess up big time he should know better then to do that. If kids look up to him and want to be just like him I hope that they don't do drugs.

    February 3, 2009 at 10:48 am |
  112. Griffin

It really doesn't change the way I see him, but if he's so committed to swimming and sports, then the last thing he needs to be doing is smoking illegal drugs. If it begins to affect his athletic ability then he could lose his endorsement deals and it could really send him down the drain.

    February 3, 2009 at 10:48 am |
  113. Trevor

I don't think Michael Phelps should be treated the same as anyone else. He did something wrong and he deserves to pay for it. This could hurt his popularity because there are a lot of people that look up to him.

    February 3, 2009 at 10:48 am |
  114. Dana

I think that this is going to affect him being so famous. A lot of people are going to look down on him now, but some people will get over it. Me personally, I now look down on him. You would think that he wouldn't do that considering he is really famous. He should not do drugs knowing that he is famous and a lot of people look up to him. He must be a great role model now! (for some people)

i think it is blown out of porportion. im sure that more than half of the people looking down on him have smoked weed in their life time to.

    February 3, 2009 at 10:50 am |
  117. Ross

I do not think this issue with Phelps is a big deal. Marijuana has for a while now been a part of modern, popular culture. This issue with Phelps has been blown way out of proportion, and it does not make him any better or worse than he was. I think that Phelps is just one of the millions of Americans who smoke Marijuana.

    February 3, 2009 at 10:51 am |

Idon't think he should get off that easy.So what he jest might go and do it again.Plus he's probley hooked on the stuff. And he's famous and they lie a lout.

Everyone keeps saying that they are dissapointed with Michael Phelps and how shocking it is that he smoked marijuana. The fact of the matter is that he won 8 gold medals and is a great swimmer. Despite the fact that he was caught smoking who is anyone to judge him for it? Would he have gotten criticized for drinking a a beer?
Of course the news and press would give grief about it because it is illegal, but in the end no one can deny that it does not changes his character.

    February 3, 2009 at 10:56 am |
  120. Seth

Why the heck would he, he has tons of money that he could spend on something cool like a water park at his house I mean I would rather have that than drugs. This example he is setting is telling me that if I want to be a good swimmer I have to do drugs?

    February 3, 2009 at 10:58 am |
  121. Jacob

Micheal doing drugs doesn't change my opinion on him! Just because he did something stupid, doesn't make him a bad person! I don't know why they think about all of that crap. So no matter what, my opinion of him won't change anytime soon.

    February 3, 2009 at 10:58 am |
  122. Geordan

If he was caught he should go and get rehab classes and stuff. He should not be a role model if he is doing drugs. If he used drugs before who knows if he used performance enhancers during the Olympics so he should get rid of all of the medals or the records the he made.

    February 3, 2009 at 10:58 am |
  123. Dana

It surprised me to here this. It does my change my opinion him. If he used marijuana, he could have easily used steroids or a similar drug during the Olympics. I hope he didn't, though. I wouldn't like to think that he's not a good role model after all.

    February 3, 2009 at 10:59 am |
  124. Sydney

People have a lot of different opinions and personally i think that my opinion won't change about him because of what he did. We are only human and we make mistakes even though he knew his responsibilities we all make mistakes and thats what i think people should realize. No one is perfect and the opinion shouldn't change because a silly little mistake in life.

    February 3, 2009 at 10:59 am |
  125. Veronica

I really don't care what Micheal Phelps does because he's ruining himself! If he wants to do illegal things it's really his choice, but I would advise him not to. What you really have to think about though is that a bunch of people do illegal things every day, he's just another person fallowing so........ I don't know. I've never thought good or bad of him so it really doesn't make a difference.

    February 3, 2009 at 10:59 am |
  126. Alayna

It kind of makes you wonder if he was using drugs during the Olympics and if he does deserve those metals. I am disappointed that he was using drugs because a lot of younger athletes look up to him and want to be like him. If those athletes see him using drugs then they might get the idea in their heads that drugs help you out and that's not true.

    February 3, 2009 at 11:00 am |
  127. Heidi

Not only does he sully his own name, he has reaped the benefits of millions of dollars of endorsements. I would have to wonder at how many of the companies that use his name will still want it!

    February 3, 2009 at 11:00 am |
  128. McKenzie

There are different opinions between people. Some may not change how they feel about him because of him admitting to it and saying that he was sorry. Others may think that saying that he will never do it again is not enough. What I think is that yea he said that he will never do it again but people say those kinds of things but they feel like they mean it but really they don't. I am not saying that everybody does that but yea people make mistakes by doing wrong things. This one he knew what he was doing. Even though I never really had an opinion on him in the first place.

    February 3, 2009 at 11:00 am |
  129. Wyatt

I think that people are taking this way to seriously I mean just because he was smoking a pipe people suddenly think that he's a pothead. No he's not give the guy a break I mean he's 23 he can make his own decisions if he wants to have a good time at a party leave him alone he had 8 freakin gold metals if he wants to smoke a bit it's fine. I'm sure he's going to be just as good a swimmer as he was before so he's not killing his chances at winning again

    February 3, 2009 at 11:00 am |
  130. Kelsey

The picture of Michael Phelps smoking marijuana kind of changes what I think about him because he is supposed to be a positive role model. I would think that he wouldn't do something like that because of how bad it is for him and because of all the people that look up to him, so it changes what I think a little bit.

    February 3, 2009 at 11:01 am |
  131. Kyler

I don't really care. If he wants to ruin his life then let him. He's a great athlete and he ca make his own choices.

    February 3, 2009 at 11:01 am |
  132. Adam

Michael Phelps on Marijuana! I was incredulous when I heard it, and incredulous when Michael managed to stay out of jail, just by promising not to do it again! If he was put in jail though, he could probably use his gold medals to buy his way out.

    February 3, 2009 at 11:01 am |
  133. Allison

What Michael Phelps did was wrong and disappointing. For being as big as a role model he is, I would think he would take better care of himself than that. Even though what he di dwas wrong and I do have a little bit of a change of opinion, I will forgive him and i feel everyone should. He is only human just like all of us and he will make mistakes. Hopefully he makes a smart decision and doesn't take drugs or set a bad example again... that would really be a disappointment.

    February 3, 2009 at 11:02 am |
  134. Alexa

I think that this definitely changes my opinion about him. But I understand that everyone makes mistakes, but he still should pay for what he did though. I think that he was a really good role model, until now, because people won't look at him the same anymore now that he did that. I mean come on, Michael Phelps smoking pot?

    February 3, 2009 at 11:02 am |
  135. Summer

No it don't change my opinion. I don't know him so its all good. I have never even heard of the name before. My opinion stays the same.

    February 3, 2009 at 11:03 am |
  136. Chris@UC

Yes it changes my opinion of Michael Phelps. Smoking marijuana is not a good example and even though he apologized, that doesn't make him a good example. I think that it might not make a big difference to other people just because they think that other athletes do it so it just makes him like them and is not a big deal.

    February 3, 2009 at 11:03 am |
  137. Olivia

Honestly I think that he made a mistake. Everyone does. I think that they should get him drug tested regularly. I also think that they should punish him like they do everybody else, just because he's famous doesn't mean that he should get special treatment.

    February 3, 2009 at 11:03 am |
  138. Catherine

I think that he deserved his awards because he worked hard for them but when it comes to drugs they shouldn't just say sorry and get off the hook they should go to jail to serve the time they owe.

    February 3, 2009 at 11:04 am |
  139. Martha

The way I look at it is that everyone makes mistakes. Almost everyone has done something stupid. And he has apologized and admitted to it. I guess this could be an example of the influence that fame puts on you.

    February 3, 2009 at 11:04 am |
  140. ~Sarah_92~

Well i think if people look up to him then yes. If people look up to him they will think it is ok to do them to so if he was really doing them then yeah.Like if your parents did them you would think they were ok to right? So since he did do them and he has an influence then yeah it does..

    February 3, 2009 at 11:06 am |
  141. Jamie

He should be free to do whatever he wants without the press on his shoulder all the time. He is probably taking the drugs to feel relaxed. come on give him a break!

I just want to say that even though he is in the wrong for smoking he stiil has over come of being a worst drug user. I still think that he has a lot to got to go though with the law. Another thing is that the person that showed that picture to the police should be ashamed because they could ruin his job.

Well, honestly Carl I don't have much to say on the whole Michael Phelps controversy. We all make bad decisions and regret them later. But besides that I would just like to say that my government class loves watching you. We love to try and predict what dashing outfit you might wear the next time. Our favorite though would have to be your sign-offs! Keep 'em comin!

I am a little disappointed in Michael but how many movie stars do you know that take drugs like that on a daily basis. I mean have they done drug tests on him? Maybe he doesn't even do it often if ever. And he apologized any way. I think he learned his lesson now that a bunch of people dislike him. I don't thin that he will do it again

Michael Phelp's is a hero to a lot of us, and his use of drugs brings him down in our eyes. How can he be a good influence to young kids when he's out of control?

I believe that Phelps should not be put in the spotlight because of his actions. Although it is illegal, marijuana really shouldn't be because little to no one dies of marijuana and hundreds of thousands of people die from alcohol abuse. Marijuana is no worse than an anti-depressent pill.

  180. Diven (devin)

Well I like Phelps because he won all those gold meddle's and i know he is telling the truth. If it was in his past and someone finally put a pic of him on the internet after he won all those olimpic meddles then I think he is telling the truth about saying he is sorry and is not goin to do it agin. Give a chance to make it up.

    February 3, 2009 at 11:47 am |
  181. brendan

i think he shouldnt have done that because it will ruin his athletic career

    February 3, 2009 at 12:01 pm |
  182. Bukner

Smoking for someone like him is very suprising because of the fact that he is such a great swimmer and he can hold his record as long as he can keep his health.

    February 3, 2009 at 12:02 pm |
  183. Sam & Poly

It changes our opinion on him. He has already been caught drinking and this just makes it worse.

    February 3, 2009 at 12:03 pm |
  184. Rachel

I think that he did something very wrong but i also think that hes gonna keep his promise and i dont think that he'll do it agian:)

i think michael phelps is stupid for doing that stuff. i think hes a little wrong in the head.

    February 3, 2009 at 12:04 pm |
  186. samantha

he should have known what he was doing was wrong and he should have known this would probably get out, but i think he still derserved thoses medals because he worked hard fo them.

    February 3, 2009 at 12:04 pm |
  187. Oleg

If he wil not stop people mite think that he cheated in the olympian games too .

Michael Phelp was one of the coolest people in the Olympics, but now he is one of the dumbest. Michael Phelps has now ruined his career just like many famous people.NOT COOL!!!!!!!!

i think michael made a wrong choice and it has changed my view of him. he should be more carefull about what he does so people don't get the wrong impresion of him. 😦 😦 😦 shame!!!

    February 3, 2009 at 12:10 pm |
  196. Jacob

what kind of an idiot would do that? He wins money/ gold and fame for doing what he likes to do and he is an idol to people and an inspiration so how could he be stupid enough to do drugs. I'll tell you this he lost my respect.

    February 3, 2009 at 12:24 pm |
  199. Courtney

Yeah, I really can't agree and say that its bad.
marijuana doesnt do anything bad, maybe he was smoking a ciggerete. So it shouldnt make him go slower.
I don't think he should of appoligized.

    February 3, 2009 at 12:24 pm |
  200. Nick

The funny thing about this incident is that if any other nobody off the streets did it, nobody else would care. But if a celebrity does... well... BOOM.

    February 3, 2009 at 12:25 pm |
  201. L4L Ethics Class with Ms. Richards

Young people looking for an excuse to smoke pot will now be able to say,"Michael Phelps does it!" Few stoners will understand that swimming, not marijuana, is a focal point for his life. As Michael Phelps is confronted with his actions, he has the opportunity to reach out to teens whose lives are centered on drug use. Is he up to the challenge?

    February 3, 2009 at 12:40 pm |
  202. Chelsea

Sure it will change the way some people think of him, and it wasn't right. But he's still a great swimmer amd he represented our country well, so we should cut him some slack.

    February 3, 2009 at 12:43 pm |
  203. ana

I THINK HE SHOULD BE SORRY ON WHAT HE DID BUT HE SHOULD STAY CAUSE HES HOT!!!

    February 3, 2009 at 12:46 pm |

I don't think that is right that they didnt arrest him. There just giving him special treatment.

    February 3, 2009 at 12:53 pm |

Well, I do believe he wronged, but he did connfess to the crime, so it doesn't change my perspective on him.

    February 3, 2009 at 12:56 pm |
  208. Bethanny

I think that he made a mistake and that he's human. I don't think we can automatically dislike someone because of one bad choice.
Sure it wasn't his best choice, but he did apologize.

    February 3, 2009 at 1:01 pm |
  209. Laura

During the olympics Michael Phelps came across, yo me, as very athlectic but not really bright , I stil think he is a great athlete but he made a bad choice

    February 3, 2009 at 1:06 pm |
  210. Taylor

I think Michael Phelps has nothing to worry about, so he smokes weed. Who cares he set a world record being someone who smoked weed, so whats it matter. He is an individual and should be allowed with reason to do what he wants. Right on Phelps.

    February 3, 2009 at 1:09 pm |

    ITS JUST A LITTLE POT

    February 3, 2009 at 1:13 pm |
  213. James

I still think that he is a great swimmer and he shouldn't be able to play in the next olymics but thats the only way we will win the 8 golds again is with him on the team

    February 3, 2009 at 1:16 pm |
  214. Monica

That is really dome that he did durgs i would not and i say do not forgven him

    February 3, 2009 at 1:17 pm |
  215. Brennan

This event definetly taints my image of him but that doesn't mean i still don't admire him for his accomplishments in the olympics.

    February 3, 2009 at 1:20 pm |
  216. Jared

He shouldn't of done it because now people might think of him as not as great of a person or he shouldn't of won the olympic medals. He may have been using drugs during the olympics which might of helped him win the gold medals. I believe that he just threw out his entire career of swimming and the olympics. Now he is just the guy who used drugs to win.

    February 3, 2009 at 1:20 pm |

Lets hope he's not a lier.

    February 3, 2009 at 1:22 pm |
  219. Alyssa

I think that Michael Phelps was let off the hook a little to easily. He should have at least got a fine of some sort or something.

    February 3, 2009 at 1:22 pm |

  221. Mr. Doherty's 6th Grade Class

We were disappointed in his actions. He is looked-up to by many people. We are happy that he apologized, and his actions have not changed our opinion of him. One bad decision shouldn't ruin a person's reputation, but if he does it again it would be hard to respect him.

    February 3, 2009 at 1:25 pm |
  222. G's 5th period class

It should not take away from his accomplishments, although his endorsements might be threatened. He is not any less of a person. Everyone makes mistakes.

I thiknk he is a failure at life

    February 3, 2009 at 1:29 pm |

I think that it will affect how people see him, only if he continues to do it, but it might just pass over, and in a few months if anyone mentions it, no one will remember.

    bad bad decision

    February 3, 2009 at 1:32 pm |
  228. Addie

yes, I think that it will affect his image but come on he is a big boy he can do what ever he wants. Im sure it was probably a one time thing and he probably regrets it big time! I think that we should forgive and forget. He can make his own choices.

    February 3, 2009 at 1:32 pm |
  229. Elizabeth

Of course this affects my opinion of him. You can't have a role model that uses drugs.

    February 3, 2009 at 1:33 pm |
  230. Matt

i think smoking pot will hurt this Olympians amazing reputation, i also think if phelps smoked most others at the party would to

    February 3, 2009 at 1:33 pm |
  231. morgan

I think it's going to affect his image because many kids and teens look up to him. He used to be known as the healthy, fit, swimmer but now that he has made this choice, adults will not want their kids to still idol him even though it is probably only a one time thing.

    February 3, 2009 at 1:34 pm |
  232. Colin

pot is not good especially on little people bad influence

    February 3, 2009 at 1:34 pm |

Yes this affects my opinion! He says he won't do it again but I don't think that's the case.

    February 3, 2009 at 1:35 pm |
  234. Beau

I agree with Nick because if you see someone doing it in an alley or something and you just walk away, but if a celebrity award winner does it then people go crazy it is that big of a deal!!

    February 3, 2009 at 1:35 pm |
  235. Elizabeth

This definitely changes my view of him. Only a moron would have something good going and then feel the need to do drugs and ruin his life.

    February 3, 2009 at 1:39 pm |
  236. annie

I CANT BELIEVE HE WOULD DO THAT, OTHER THAN LOSING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN ENDORSEMENTS HE PROBABLY LOST HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF FANS....AT LEAST FOR NOW. I THINK AS LONG AS HE NEVER DOES IT AGAIN HE WILL BE FINE.

    February 3, 2009 at 1:42 pm |
  237. Darren

I think Michael Phelps should be forgiven because everyone is making a big deal out of it because he is a celebrity it was a one-time thing all kinds of celebrity's go through break downs and do illegal drugs. All this is because of people following them around and they start to lose it a little. Michael Phelps should be forgotten.

    February 3, 2009 at 1:45 pm |
  238. Carley

During the summer I watched the Olympics and was rooting for Phelps the whole time. It stinks that he had to take these drugs! Sorry doesn't do it. He just ruined his career. 😦

    February 3, 2009 at 1:46 pm |
  239. Justin

I think that Michale should not get a second chance and should be charged for what he did and should get about 48 hours in jail so he can learn his lesson.

    February 3, 2009 at 1:47 pm |
  240. jordan

My mind is totally different for Michael Phelps .Now i think he used steroids to win the all those gold metal and say oh opps it will never happen again yea well thought are already made Michael .

    February 3, 2009 at 1:49 pm |
  241. Kayla

I will never think of him the same way again! But I think he should be forgiven because everyone does at least one thing they want to take back in life!

    February 3, 2009 at 1:50 pm |
  242. Aijay

Hi!!!! I think that some people are just going to let this whole thing pass by like they did with the arrest for drunk driving. I think that people should take this more seriously. I know that he is famous and all, but he is a role model for many people!!!!! He should watch what he does and set a POSITIVE role model.

    February 3, 2009 at 1:51 pm |
  243. Symphony

Because if he is your role model and is out there looking stuiped taking drug that would change my thoughts.

    February 3, 2009 at 1:56 pm |
  244. Zane

The only part of this story that made me mad was the fact that he apologized for smoking. He should have taken the time to explain that he does not view it as a demonic plant, as it is viewed much too often in our culture. The only reason he didn't do so is because he would have lost his many sponsors.

    February 3, 2009 at 1:57 pm |
  245. shaunell

i think sometimes people are under presser and do things the regret we all do. so maybe he was depressed but that still should not let him off the hook.

Yes, it did change our opinion a little, but we think it was good that he fessed up to his mistakes.

People are making WAY to much commotion about this! When proffesional sports players (like Randy Moss was one) there is not nearly as much publicity. Phelps said he was sorry, says he won't do it again and that's that.

    February 3, 2009 at 2:42 pm |

personally i think pot should be legal in the U.S but with a 50% state tax, imagine the the state income from that

i think kind of diff on him because i an a swimmer and i looked up to him but i cant now if he does drugs i just don't see him the same as i did before but i forgive him if he doesn't do it any more 🙂

    February 3, 2009 at 2:53 pm |

I don't think one use will do anything negative to his physical ability, and I don't think people should be freaking out about it, unless he starts doing it every week.

  257. Madeleine

How could someone throw away everything they've worked for, I mean 8 medals in China, and 6 medals in Aspen? Just for having a good time, wow

michael phelps is to good of a athlete to be wasting his time on drugs

i think phelps and his drug issue is so stupid! i think he is very talented and could go really far in his career but he kinda already ruined all those chances. BOO! go to rehab loser! 😦

We think that decision was not made wisely. And that he shouldn't have done that because now it will probably ruin his reputation, and his fans will probably be very disappointed in him but it was dumb on his part.............and he aint cute!

    February 3, 2009 at 3:03 pm |
  262. Brandon

I think that phelps is clueless on how much people like him and how big his career is

    February 3, 2009 at 3:03 pm |
  263. Owen

I belive that he is relly dumb to even try the stuff. He was good at swiming and should get back to it, not any drugs.

    February 3, 2009 at 3:03 pm |
  264. Logan

Well I don't know or have any idea why he would do that thats not very smart I wonder what his parents have to say about it.

    February 3, 2009 at 3:04 pm |
  265. tj

i think he is a good swimmer and all but i dont think he should get in too much trouble cause marijuana does not help you be better at a certain sport

    February 3, 2009 at 3:04 pm |

He is a DRUG user and should climb back into his hole

    February 3, 2009 at 3:06 pm |

I think that Michael Phelps should not do drugs. Its bad for him. Carl, you're really corny.

    February 3, 2009 at 3:08 pm |
  268. Kaylaa

    Honestly,
Everyone needs to have some fun in their lifes, And just because He's smoking Marijuana or drinking or whatever, It should'nt effect his Career Or what people think of him.
People need to grow up and realize that this is reality, It's not some drug- free materialistic world..

    I say,
Good job for having a Freakin' life Michael.

    February 3, 2009 at 3:09 pm |

It does change my opinion about him. Marijuana is dangerous.
I hope he stops his addiction soon.

hes a good man that has a clean record but if you cant do the time dont do the crime. but he did say sorry

I am dissapointed that he did that because he is a role model to many people but we are humans and we all make mistakes. He said he wouldnt do it again so lets hold him to his word.

My opinion of Michael Phelps has changed dramatically. Many people look up to him because of his success in the pool and it is dissapointing to see him taking his responsibility as a role model so lightly.

    February 3, 2009 at 4:39 pm |
  287. Jeremy

I dont think Micheal was thinking when he did it because for an athleat like him he should know better.

    February 3, 2009 at 4:40 pm |
  288. thynter

just because micheal phelps smoked some drugs doesn't mean he is a bad man. i mean you have to give him tips for winning the most gold medals ever.
he is still awsome because he was in the olympics and he won sooooooo many gold medals. that must be really heavy. like fifty pounds or somthing. HUGE man that guy crazy, he IS a fish, not just part fish, completely fish!;) :)=)

    February 3, 2009 at 4:41 pm |
  289. ANTHONY

Micheal phelps is... no offence by the way not using his head . he is a international hero showing that you can do what ever you want to be. hes not being very smart to throw away all his accomplishments he was the U.S. hero for winning those medals but now he'll be remembered as the guy who smoked marijuwahna not our nations hero.

    February 3, 2009 at 4:42 pm |
  290. Rachel

it doesnt change my opinoin because i dont really care that he did because that a lot of famous people do that stuff. and he can do what he wants also he said he will stop so i believe him.

we think that he is a human and people make mistakes. but he is one of the fastest swimmers to live and they sey if you smoke weed it slows you dawn. but it dosent apear to slow him dawn. we think it shouldent matter cuz if he likes it then let him be.

    February 3, 2009 at 4:44 pm |

It doesn't change what i think of him. I still think he is a role model so what he made one little mistake. He apologized and he said that he will never do it again and I believe him.

in my own opinion micheal phelps is just like us. we can do what ever we want why not him?

I can't believe Michael Phelps t drugs. What Olympic medalist would do that such of thing?

As a member of Mrs. Heckts class, I represent a class of people who all agree that people need to chill out and realize he just won 8 gold medals for our country!

No wonder he eats some 1000 calories a day.

No it does not....everyone makes mistakes. He will learn from this or maybe next time it will change my oppinion. Its amazing how everyone else makes mistakes but yet michael gets used as a posterchild.UH arent we in america?

    February 3, 2009 at 5:07 pm |
  300. Trever

I think that when someone is a role model they are put on a pedstal and should act a certain way. Many kids look up to Michael Phelps and seeing their role model do this makes them think that it's okay, when it's not. Yes, everyone makes mistakes but he should know better.

    February 3, 2009 at 5:15 pm |
  301. taylor

yes, it does change the way i look at him, but not completly because he confessed to making a mistake and said he would never do it again. we all make mistakes.

    February 3, 2009 at 5:17 pm |
  302. Jack

He made a very bad choice by smoking marijuana, even if he's good I don't think he deserves a second chance...a lot of kids my age looked up to him,and I hope they don't follow in his footsteps and do what he did.

    February 3, 2009 at 5:22 pm |
  303. Natasha

I think that Micheal Phelps should be considered a role model in swimming but just not in social aspects of life. If you look up to someone you should try to have a quality of theirs instead of their whole personality.

    February 3, 2009 at 5:26 pm |
  304. Zane

He is 23 years old, is it really shocking that he did this? And the only thing that made me mad was the fact that he apologized. There is no way he is truly sorry for it, he just cannot speak his mind because he will lose his many sponsors.

    February 3, 2009 at 5:26 pm |
  305. Paper

So what if he was smoking marijuana its his life he should of atleast tried not to get caught. he is a bad influence for younger people who admire him. For example, my brother looks up to Phelps and now he wants to start smoking all of a sudden. BAD PHELPS

    February 3, 2009 at 5:30 pm |
  306. Carlos

That's right. Everyone does make mistakes.

    February 3, 2009 at 5:39 pm |

I saw the Michael Phelps report and was astonished by it. He had such a great reputation and was an insperational role model. He should only use his lungs for swimming, not inhaling any smoke from illegal substances. It does certainly change peoples outlook on him since he is found doing something that is not at all smart and impulsive. It will drastically alter his reputation, and it it won't be a good change. I know that it changed my outlook on him that way.

    February 3, 2009 at 5:39 pm |

I think marijuana is nasty . And that is a bad impression on my part i think he should probably get in some trouble for it

I think Micheal should know that he had a big influence on kids beacause of the 2008 Olyimpics and that oding that was wrong and could influence kids to do drugs. What a mistake.

  312. Laine

I think MIcheal should know that he had a big inlfluence on kids because of the Olympics I hope he knows he could cause kids to do abuse drugs. What a mistake.

what i think is everybody makes mistakes and you should be able to get a second chance. He will learn from that mistake he made and fix it because you only learn by doing. So thats what i think and people should forgive him. And yes i think people will still look at him the same, as a HERO.

    Thanks.

Phelps was amazing in the 2008 summer olympics! This doesnt change my view on the athlete at all but he should face charges. Just because he is famous doesnt mean he doesnt mean he doesnt have to have the same consequences

Phelps was amazing in the 2008 summer olympics! This doesnt change my view on the athlete at all but he should face charges. Just because he is famous doesnt mean he doesnt have to face the same consequences as us! He really owned it and apolagized.

I think that what he did was extremely foolish. He is a huge role model for all ages, and so he is held to higher standards.

    February 3, 2009 at 6:17 pm |
  317. Isaac

Yes, because little kids look up to him and now that he did drugs there going to look at him like bad guy or even yet grow up and do the same thing as he just did

  318. Ashley

I really looked up to Micheal Phelps because of all that he acheived in the 2008 Bejiing Olympics but this has changed my view of him. He is a role model to a lot of young people and this is sending them the wrong message. I still think he is a really good athelete but it will take some time for him to redeem hisself.

I THINK THE SAME OF HIM. LIKE EVERYONE MAKES MISTAKES. AM SURE THAT MANY CELEBRITYS LIKE BRITTANY SPEARS OR LINDSY LOHAN ARE STILL CONSIDERED A ROLE MODEL TO SOME PEOPLE AND LOOK AT ALL THE THINGS THEY HAVE BEEN INTO. IT WAS WRONG WHAT HE DID AND NOW HE KNOWS NOT TO DO IT AGAIN. HE WILL STILL BE A ROLE MODEL TO ME BECAUSE HE HAS ACOMPLISHED SOMETHING IN HIS LIFE AND HAS BEEN A LEADER AND HAS NOT GAVEN UP HIS DREAM.

This guy was caught doing illegal drugs. And just because he's an Olympic gold medalist means he can get away with it? I just don't get it.

    February 3, 2009 at 6:26 pm |
  321. Andrew

As much as it disapoints me that a person that is looked at as an american icon could be dumb enough to do drugs, i think we should give him a secoend chance. The reason is, is that Michael has been an insperation to millions of americans. all those who watched him in the olympics would agree with me. so lets not dwell on what happened in the past, lets focus on what can still come from Michael

    February 3, 2009 at 6:34 pm |
  322. Pnut

It doesn't change my opinion of him as a person, just his judgement, he's the best swimmer in the world, so I'm glad he apologized to his fans that were disappointed in him. He should be treated like any other illegal substance abuser.

    February 3, 2009 at 6:36 pm |

Michael Phelps should'nt be forgiven. He is supposed to be an inspiration to kids, and imagine young tots smoking drugs behind the barn.

He won't last 5 minutes after being parted with drugs. Like alcohol, drugs are addictive, and can make your life a heck of a lot worse then a drunk or a hobo.

    February 3, 2009 at 6:42 pm |
  327. Anna

As much as i love Michael, that was a horrible decision for him to do drugs. I just want to let all the other people out there who look up to him like I do know that it is ok to still look up to him but whatever you do dont ever do drugs!

    huh
that was kinda dumb of him
i mean hes famous so you think that he would

yes, because drugs are bad, and I always say "HUGS NOT DRUGS"

It is a bad think he needs to be a better role model but at least he appoligised and he is really cute

    February 3, 2009 at 7:06 pm |
  333. Wyatt Morovits

I think that Phelps should be thrown in jail for what he did, because if the average person got caught doing something like what he did they would be thrown in jail; so how is it any different for him? Just because he is famous doesn't mean that he should be able to do anything he wants to including drugs. He probably lied and is off somewhere right at this very moment doing it again just because he got away with it.

    February 3, 2009 at 7:06 pm |
  334. Clare

It definitely changes how I look at him as a person, but I still think he is an amazing swimmer.

    February 3, 2009 at 7:10 pm |
  335. Sara

Even though I was dissapointed and sad that Micheal Phelps would made such a mistake as doing an illegal drug; I didn't forget that nobody is perfect. We all can fall and make terrible mistakes. It's doesn't change my image of him, it just reminds me that he is human and will fail sometimes.
The difference between us and him is that he has more publicity to disparage him than we do.

    February 3, 2009 at 7:12 pm |

all of the kids that are fans of michel phelps are going to do marjuana now because michel phelps did it and they think its cool

so he doesnt get in trouble if he does that, but i get in trouble when i dont do my chores

    February 3, 2009 at 7:14 pm |
  338. Claudia

Let's be honest; this is really no surprise. Every 2 out of 3 athletes will have usage of any kind of drugs...but it does dissapoint me, and of course it changes my view on him. Aren't athletes supposed to be someone to look up to? Or healthy people who know what they're doing? He, obviously, has no clue how dumb he looks and how he hurt his reputation. So yes, it changes my view from a well-known, healthy athlete to a naive and unknowledgeable human being.

    February 3, 2009 at 7:18 pm |
  339. Gus

I think this presents an interesting question about the true underlying nature of people we hail as national heroes and slap onto boxes of Wheaties. Because someone excels at sports, that does not make them a morally good person.

    February 3, 2009 at 7:20 pm |
  340. Tyler

This took my entire view of Mr.Phelps, and made me think that he is not what we look at him to be. If only he would have listened to all those Above the Influence commercials.

    February 3, 2009 at 7:21 pm |
  341. Natasha

yes, it does change my view of him, he was looked upon as a role model by many and now he just starts doing this, i just hope he ment it when he said it won't happen again!

    February 3, 2009 at 7:22 pm |
  342. josh

i think if he wants to do drugs he should go

    February 3, 2009 at 7:22 pm |
  343. Zack

I think that Michael Phelps made a very very bad decision. I think that since a lot of kids look up to him, they will think "Hey, Michael Phelps does drugs, so I think I will too." That totally changes my opinion of him.

    February 3, 2009 at 7:25 pm |
  344. Amanda

Michael Phelps was a role model to lots of people, and swimmers, around the world after the Olympics. And part of that was because he didn't do drugs. Athletes have to do through a drug test before they're admitted and he passed, so that's how we know. But, just because he's some famous athlete who made history doesn't mean we can just turn away from his mistakes, and neither can he. It's good that he apologized, but if he's banned from the Olympics, then that's a suiting punishment. And yes, drugs can slow you down when you do any kind of sport because they mess up your body functions. I'll say this: Michael Phelps used to be one of my top five role models. Now, he's not even on the list. Let's just hope that he learns from this mistake.

    February 3, 2009 at 7:30 pm |
  345. greg

i think that if he wants to do that its up to him its his body so leave it alone anyone else can do it and they would just get a little slap on the wrist and when he does it everyone goes crazy about it i mean ya its bad but its him not you

    February 3, 2009 at 7:30 pm |
  346. Michael

It totally changes my mind about him because in the water he was the man, but out of the water he got too carried away like many other famous celeberties, and made bad choices leading him down the wrong path.

    February 3, 2009 at 7:34 pm |
  347. Mr Hughes

Ehhh I think that the kids wont be affected at all by it or
videos that show drugs. Kids make up their own decisions
and should learn how to look out for themselves.
Nobody ever told me to do drugs or not to, i turned out just fine.

ps, i told the class that i would be on student news

    we will all be watching!

    February 3, 2009 at 7:38 pm |
  348. Evan

I think that he should have to donate money to either DARE or GREAT
to show that drugs are bad.

I agree with "Mr hughes" we should not be so easily affected by this

    February 3, 2009 at 7:41 pm |
  349. Elizabeth

no wonder he's the fastest swimmer. He probably does drugs to get high and then that will make him go fast and win the tournament!

    February 3, 2009 at 7:46 pm |
  350. Marcel

Evreyone makes mistakes. Phelps is a really good athlete and as long as he won't do it again then everything is okay.

    February 3, 2009 at 7:48 pm |
  351. Jessie (;

give him a break. i feel that everyone makes mistakes. yes, drugs may affect his swimming, but don't we all still love him in the end?

    February 3, 2009 at 7:49 pm |
  352. JOSHUA

I know Michael Phelips is a great swimmer but he did something wrong and he should get in trouble with the law. This is the perfect time to tell everybody that you could get in trouble with the law if you do something like this.

    February 3, 2009 at 7:54 pm |
  353. Sydney

I don't see why people are making such a big deal out of this. I mean I know that it's terrible to do drugs and everything, but it was 3 months ago! And he's out of college, at a party, I mean I think that we should give him a break. If anyone else did it, they'd be fine. And besides, I love Michael Phelps!

    February 3, 2009 at 7:54 pm |
  354. Ashlyn

Michael is so unnaturally good at his sport that sometimes we forget he's still just human, and humans make mistakes. It doesn't change my opinion of him, because everyone will have to face drugs sometime in their life, and even though he made the wrong descision, hopefully he can learn from it. Since he saw that it put his career in jepordy this time, maybe he won't do it again.

    February 3, 2009 at 7:55 pm |
  355. Rachelle

Everyone makes bad mistakes and he said he was sorry and he whon't do it again and i believe him i still think he is great and im still a fan and it was a bad thing to do but like i said everyone make mistakes.

    February 3, 2009 at 8:01 pm |
  356. Rachel

Celebrities make mistakes too. I think he was probably sick of all the paparazzi and just gave them what they were waiting for. For him to do something STUPID!!!!!

    February 3, 2009 at 8:02 pm |
  357. Mina

Phelps may have the medals, but he needs a good backround for them too. Illegal drugs, not a good way to be representing our country.

    February 3, 2009 at 8:04 pm |
  358. Michael

No, it doesn't change my opinion of him.
There is no proven medical or scientific evidence that marijuana is harmful. NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse) often refuses funding for research on it's medicinal purposes. Obviously, smoking marijuana has not harmed his athletic abilities. If he was doing a harmful drug however, this would be a problem.

    February 3, 2009 at 8:07 pm |
  359. Mary

well he use to be my idol but now im not to sure.. he did apologise. he was truthful for saying he did it though so i guess i could still look up to him

    February 3, 2009 at 8:09 pm |
  360. Rachel

I believe that everyone makes our own choices in life and Michael choose to make this one. Does it change my opinion of him? No, because we all are human and we will all make mistakes in life, some are just worse that others.

    February 3, 2009 at 8:12 pm |
  361. Heather

I really think that should change a lot of peoples mind about him because know he is not a good role model. Another person got cought doing the same thing and they got there medel taken away. Why not Phelps.

    February 3, 2009 at 8:13 pm |
  362. Nikk

Yes he did a bad thing, but that does not make him a bad person. I still look up to this great man. He is still the best athlete in the sport of swimming

    February 3, 2009 at 8:13 pm |
  363. Mr. Paughs Class

No, Michael Phelps is gulity as charged. Just because he is a famous person in anykind of way, doesn’t mean he should not get what any other unfamous person would get, for that matter, and It really does not change the picture of our opinion about him; It just changes the way the people should think of him.
    -Mr.Paughs class

This does not change my opinion of Michael Phelps. He was just having a good time.Sure he is a role model but he is just human and humans make mistakes were not all prefect

    February 3, 2009 at 8:38 pm |
  365. Trevor

I don't think any less of Phelps after the incident. Yes i do believe that he made a poor decision but we, as fans, cant just outcast him after one incident. Everyone should have a second chance.

    oh my gosh
i didnt know that michel phelps did that!
i just found out about it today!!

    February 3, 2009 at 9:06 pm |
  367. Kiera

I dont like that he dose it but just because he is famous it is such a scandel.. thats bull.. people at my school do it all the time and no one thinks twice about it... It is not like he was doing during his training for the Olympics.. everyone needs to relax just give him a break it just shows he is a human with mastakes

    February 3, 2009 at 9:10 pm |
  368. Ashleigh

i think that it should change your opinion becasuse he is a very good athelete and doing something like that could ruin his career and over 1000 people can't even belive he would even think about doing something like that!!

    February 3, 2009 at 9:11 pm |
  369. Claire

I think that what Phelps did was wrong, considering that he is a role model for many young people, and they look up to him. If a kids role model is using illegal drugs, it will send out a bad message to him or her.

    February 3, 2009 at 9:17 pm |
  370. Hannah

He messed up big time. A lot of children looked up to him.But it does not change my opinion about him.Michael knew what might happen if he did this, but at least he didn't try to lie about smoking.

    February 3, 2009 at 9:17 pm |
  371. Max

I always thought that Michal was a good person but when I heard when he smoked marijuana I thought to myself why would he do that.

    February 3, 2009 at 9:42 pm |
  372. Maddy

Phelps used to be my role model. His illegal drug use has even affected me. I used to absolutely think he was smart, talented, and knew how to treat his body. Now that he has taken drugs, I don't think of him as a role model anymore. He is still very talented, but I am having second thoughts.

    February 3, 2009 at 9:43 pm |
  373. venecia

well it would probably shouldnt matter but some people might not like him anymore but i know my teacher will always think of him as her future husband no matter what!!

    February 3, 2009 at 9:51 pm |
  374. Lizzy

When I first heard about this incident I was REALLY disapointed in Phelpy. I mean what was he thinking alot of people, especially kids look up to him. He has a chance to take that to his advantage and set a good example for kids. Then when I was just as I was about to take down the picture of him off of my bulletin board, I realized that I was being completely too harsh on him. Everyone makes bad mistakes all the time and his are just blown up because he famous. I really hope he learns his lesson from this though. Even though I was disapointed I still will be cheering for him in the next olympics. Please DON'T let us down again Phelps!!!

    February 3, 2009 at 10:09 pm |
  375. TJ

Even though Phelps was doing drugs he didn't try to hide it so even though it is bad to do drugs we shouldn't shun Michael for doing drugs, he was open about it and he promised not to do them again but if he's does them again sham on him!!!

    February 3, 2009 at 10:11 pm |
  376. Brayden

He has millions of kids around the world that look up to him as someone they want to be like. Doing something like this sets a bad example that everyone will see. He does not deserve to have anyone look up to him.

    February 3, 2009 at 10:22 pm |
  377. abby

It doesn't change my thoughts about him. It's good that he apologized
and it was the right thing to do. But if he does any more illegal drugs, he should get some kind of punishment.

    February 3, 2009 at 10:26 pm |
  378. Matt

Phelps is a great swimmer and his eight medals proves that i do think it is wrong for them to strip his medals for something he did after the Olympics but he should definetly not be doing anything like that again....If he continues this behavior then it might be suitable to make a punishment for him

    -Back to you Carl

our oppion shouldnt change because he did ine thing wrong we all did

    February 3, 2009 at 10:47 pm |
  380. Carl

I think it's ridiculous that he is being criticized like this just because he's an Olympic athlete, people get in trouble for that all the time and no one cares so why judge him just because he's in the spot light? he apologized and says he regrets doing it so no harm done. (to us anyways)

    February 3, 2009 at 10:56 pm |
  381. Danielle

I think that everyone makes mistakes, so Phelps would too. He's already dedicated most of his life to the sport he loves and inspired many Americans. Even though he made a horrible mistake, he apologized, so I think we should forgive him.

    February 3, 2009 at 10:57 pm |
  382. Michael

I don't think that you guys should be so hard on him. Sure, he made a mistake, and this shouldn't change his reputation. (As a swimmer) Smoking has no effect that gives you an advantage at swimming. I know it was wrong for him to take those illegal drugs. But this still has no effect on his accomplishments. Everyone who has been encouraged shouldn't let this stop them from wanting to accomplish their dreams.

At least Micheal Phelps was honest about it. Everyone makes mistakes, Oh no... Hannah Montana song.

  385. Cori

I think that when great athletes waste their time doing drugs illegal or not, it can destroy their career and ruin there life. Even though it is stupid to use drugs, Micheal Phelps is a great athlete and should not be criticized for this one mistake. Now, if it happens again then he should be in trouble.

    February 4, 2009 at 12:27 am |

I think that this picture should change some opinons about Phelps and I think he should be a better role model.

he is a role model for many people! and what he did was wrong he is setting a bad example!=( I understand that everyone makes mistakes and I think he should be forgiven but just because everyone makes mistakes and he apologized it does not make it right!

Yes i believe that this will change alot of peoples minds about him and I do beleive that he should have to pay a consequence for his actions but he should be givin a second chance. We all judge people harshly but once we are in their spots we beg for forgivness. "Treat others the way you want to be trusted" thats what I was tought and thats how I believe we should be

i think that Michael Phelps is truethfully sorry but i guess you can say Phelps Olympic career is "up in smoke"

I think Carl Azuz should get a gold medal in anchoring!

Michael Phelps defienently made a mistake, but he is only human. Everybody makes mistakes, and there is a lot of pressure put on you when you are an olympic athlete.

Having MIcheal Phelps use drugs doesn't lower my thoughts about him, it raises them! I don't mean that I encourage drugs, I'm just saying that it makes him more real! I mean 8 GOLD MEDALS? Everybody makes mistakes, Micheal's life shouldn't be ruined just because he got caught making his!

I think that Michael Phelps made a mistake, but that's no reason to look down on him. He's my hero still, and I don't think anyone's opinion of him should change.

I dont really know, this could be a lie. I was actually standing up to him.

I think that it probably does change him a little bit because a lot of young people look up to him and if he is doing something illegal than people will not want to look up to him because he is doing bad stuff

Smoking shouldn't affect his carer as a swimmer, it was a mistake and it would probably affect his health more than his carer. They shouldn't criticize him.

I think he's going to do it again because with most drugs you get adicted to them and can't Quit.

    February 4, 2009 at 8:16 am |
  408. david

I think he shouldn't have mercy. I used to think of him as a role model, now I think of as a lier a drug user and a cheater. I wonder if he is gonna do it again if he does he might be done with swimming. If he is he is only in his 20s he is very young. He still has a carrier and could maybe even die! I couldn't believe he did that.

I THINK HE MIGHT DO IT AGAIN BUT ITS JUST LIKEL ALL STARS/FAMOUS PEOPLE THEY DO SOMTHING BAD AND THEN THEY
GO AND FIX IT. HE PROBABLY WON'T DO IT AGAIN 'CAUSE HE STILL WANTS HIS FANS.

I think that it was a very poor decision by Michael Phelps. Couldn't you find something better to do with you MILLIONS of dollars!?!?!?

Wow I don't know about this one its hard, however he said he promised not to do it again so I think his apoligy should be accepted

I think micheal phelps made a mistake he deeply regrets. he is a role model for people everywhere and what he does on reflects on what people thinks of swimmers everywhere.

I think Michael Phelps made a big ol' mistake. Its a darn shame when celebrities do dummyhead stuff like that.

    February 4, 2009 at 9:14 am |
  414. Hannah

I don't think its a good thing he did that, but he is an adult and he can make his own choices and if he chooses to do drugs at a party like once, i don't think every one needs to freak out about it!!! I'm pretty sure other Olympic gold metal winners do that once in a while, who ever got the photo of him doing that is just a wrong person cause this should have been kept private. I think we should forget about it and give him another chance cause i don't think he will do it again.

    February 4, 2009 at 10:18 am |
  415. Kayna

Well that wasnt the smoothest idea of his no...but we should still find it within ourselves to llok over that. even though his picture tous will always be stained.

Hey i mean sure the kid had some fun! I'm sure alot of adults have had "fun" in theri days! We shouldn't punish him that hard for what he did. It's not like he did it before a competition! He's an amazing athlete and he deserves a little support. I'm on his side! (not that i do drugs or anything because i don't!!)

Wow, my vision of Michael Phelps just got messed up. I hate him now. I never really like him before, though. He never seemed like he could do all that stuff he did. Who knows, maybe he cheated at the Olympics.

Why do all of those celebrities do drugs? It's weird...not just illegal, but still! Apparently it's not that great to be famous; you're always in the spotlight, judged by every move you make, and you do drugs! And why would someone let a person take a picture of him or her smoking an illegal drug? Strange...

I thought you were real Micheal! I looked up to u and now many will smoke and it will be ur fualt!!!! Drugs just wreck u! Im quiting the swim team and make everyone else in the world quit. Well it doesn't come as a surprise to me to find out that some famous athlete was caught doing some sort of drug. But I don't think that he should be getting judged when there are way more people out there doing that kind of stuff to and extreme level. Seriously it's stupid!! And besides it's not like there aren't other athletes doing drugs...

    February 4, 2009 at 11:27 am |
  430. Grace

I don't think it should be such a big deal. I mean if it happens a lot more times then we should worry but so far it's only been once. I wonder why he was doing it, it's not like he wanted to become famous or anything. It just sets a bad example for teens and kids, because people look up to him for his accomplishments and such. 😦

    February 4, 2009 at 11:31 am |
  431. Nate

I think Michael Phelps is a loser and I don't have much sympathy for him. He should know better. Why did he smoke marijuana? He needs help. Millions are looking up to you, start acting like the role model you're supposed to be.

    February 4, 2009 at 11:36 am |

I think that because Micheal Phelps is human he will make mistakes. Sometimes, the mistakes are very regrettable like this one, but I think that all people make mistakes and this is just one of those mistakes.

I think that what he did was wrong but that doesn't make him a bad person. We all make mistakes and do something stupid once and a while and though its not the best thing to do HUMANS MAKE MISTAKES! And I know that if I were him I would want forgiveness for making that mistake because he is a role model and I forgive him.

    February 4, 2009 at 1:25 pm |
  437. James

Well I never thought of him as a role model but if he was caught doing marijuana kids are going to try it cause they saw there role model doing it. Kids are going to think that it is OK because they saw an adult doing it.

    February 4, 2009 at 1:25 pm |
  438. Ashley

It really shouldn't be a big deal i mean come on! alot more celebraties do it! and its only the first time!! He shouldn't get in any trouble for the first offence.

I think that it was very wrong of Michael to do illegal drugs but if he promises not to do it then I think everyone should except his apology. I think it might have made his reputation not so good but people still look up to him and he really does need to set good examples.

I defiantly think that this makes me change my mind about Michael Phelps. I think that he had such good abilities and he might just waste them by using these illegal drug. I hope he makes the right choice by NOT using this illegal drug.

i dont know....... it is a little weird that after he won all the olympic gold medals, he would risk messing up his career with MARIJUANA!!!!

    February 4, 2009 at 1:32 pm |
  446. Jessica

I think what Michael Phelps did was very wrong. I think that he should have done something different at that party than smoke marijuana. Now because of what he had done some kids are going to look up to that and might try to smoke.

    February 4, 2009 at 1:32 pm |
  447. Bob

That #@$%&! is so stupid for smoking pot he should be taken from his medals.

    February 4, 2009 at 1:32 pm |
  448. Rachel

This totally changed my point of view of him! I think that this was really stupid, everyone else who is saying this isnt a big deal well why not??? He was a role model for millions of not just kids but all people! why would he even do something that stupid!? okay this WAS ILLEGAL!!!! thats a big deal! i dont care who he is why isnt he getting the same punishment that every one else would???

    February 4, 2009 at 1:33 pm |
  449. Gimme

HOLY COW Man!!!!! That is outrageously stupid that he smoked marajowanna and he should be like put in the brick man! 😦 😦 I think he is a filthy little liar man! I hate swimming even more now! Baseball is the way to go!!!! Woooooo baseball! Hay Carl which baseball bat should i get a Titan or a Rush baseball bat!!! Man!!

    February 4, 2009 at 1:33 pm |
  450. Brittany

I think someone like him who won 8 Olympic medals shouldn't smoke marijuana. He is a huge role model for many kids even if they are swimmers or not. So he has to realize it and change what he does. Even though he did apologize to the public, it probably changes many people's opinion on him.

    February 4, 2009 at 1:34 pm |
  451. Kaitlyn

I don't think that he should have done that. 😦 I mean it's not like it is that big of deal that he did that, I mean a lot of famous people do that in this point in time. It defiantly changes my thoughts of him and I don't think that any one will forget it. Even if he did apologize no one is going to forget it. 😦

    February 4, 2009 at 1:34 pm |

GUYS I THINK YOU SHOULD JUST LEAVE HIM ALONE!! HE ONLY DID IT ONCE!!! And everyone makes mistakes!! And if it happens again i really don't know.....

    February 4, 2009 at 1:35 pm |
  453. Javier

I think that micheal phelps should be arrested because he is just like any other person but he just swims really fast and that is still very dangourus to have marijuana in the commuinty .

    February 4, 2009 at 3:18 pm |
  454. Marissa

People make mistakes. I think we forget sometime that Michael is a normal person, just like all of us expect for that fact that he is a beast at swimming. He made a mistake and seems to be sorry for that. I don't see what the big deal is for him to do something like that when there are people around the world and in our country that are doing the same thing and isn't a big deal when they do it. He is a normal guy behind the surface. I will always be a Michael Phelps fan. He is an amazing swimmer and at least he admits to his mistakes.

    February 4, 2009 at 3:21 pm |
  455. Patrick

Something doesn't seem right. This is already the second time a drug related issue has occured for him. After his first DUI charge a few years ago, i assumed he wouldn't let drugs come back into play, but now this! I think people should think twice about looking up to Michael as an idol now that this happened.

    February 4, 2009 at 4:23 pm |
  456. Mateo

I dont think it's that big of a deal. He's a normal person and people do this stuff. His medals have nothing to do with. Bad judgment on his part but people have done worse.....

    February 4, 2009 at 4:25 pm |
  457. grant

I don't understand why anyone such as Michael Phelps would even come close to the kind of thing. I still can't beleive that after winning 8 gold medals that wouldn't be enough to convince him to not to do drugs. Why Michael, why?

    February 4, 2009 at 4:38 pm |
  458. Elizabeth

I think that was really wrong for him to do, I mean, he was a role model for soooo many people. Is everyone just going to sit there and pretend it never happened? Or are they going to do something about it? I can not tell if it changes my opinion on him or not... but if he does it again, then it definitely will.

    February 4, 2009 at 4:44 pm |
  459. Kerri

I do think that is was wrong for Phelps to do something like that, but I don't think that should change people's opinion. He made a mistake, just like any other human being.

    February 4, 2009 at 5:06 pm |
  460. Mallory

Michael shouldn't be suspended for four years because he's still a 'teenager'. We all know that teens can pull some pretty stupid stunts. Phelps is just another teenager.

    February 4, 2009 at 5:12 pm |
  461. Dani

Micheal Phelphs, more like Micheal Helps. Like everybody else he's not perfect, but he should still be punished. Just because he's famous doesn't mean he shouldn't be let off the hook. So what if he won 8 gold medals, I'm a big fan too. But I still think he should be punished for his actions.

    February 4, 2009 at 5:34 pm |
  462. Meghan

Hi! Carl all i have to say is that people who put those pictures on magizines are only looking for ways to detroy peoples lives and make a living by doing so.i find that micheal phelps has his own life just like we have ours and i find that what they are saying is most likely not true because people these days would do any thing to try and earn money .... by the way my 1st hour teacher says you are such a goofball but we love the show we watch it everymorning at school!!! love the puns!!!!! keep up the good work!!

    February 4, 2009 at 5:52 pm |

People make mistakes and their friends talk them into it. Heard of the word Peer Pressure? That could of happened to him.

    February 4, 2009 at 5:55 pm |
  466. Hunter

Just one thing doesn't blow his whole career. Yea, we seen that to other Celebritys, but they chose to keep doing it and they payed for it with their career going down the toliet. Phelps made a mistake, but that wouldn't mess up alot of work for 8 gold medals up. I would expect it would if he did again a few more times.

    February 4, 2009 at 5:59 pm |
  467. dubadidy

i really dont care because michael phelps isnt that great, my buddy andrew, who by the by got DQed cuz he didnt touch the wall:(, can swim faster then him if he just believes and he'll get more olympic medals than him, you'll see

    February 4, 2009 at 6:04 pm |
  468. mairlan(:

Phelps might have smoken the blunt but after he did it he realized that he had a career that was really good for him and recognized his mistake and apologized for it. and he also mentioned that he was acting inappropriately so maybe he was pressured into it. but anyway, phelps is still a record setting olympian and one puff of an illegal drug will not change thatt.. we love you Micheal Phelps 🙂

    February 4, 2009 at 6:21 pm |
  469. Nikhil

Like many others I thought highly of Phelps, this is now tarnished unless new facts come into light. This drug doesn't do anything to help him so the benefits of him doing this is zero, meaning he still deserves the gold medals and all the achievements he's won. However it's like your good friend doing drugs, there still your friend but you don't think as highly of them. But remember he's human and he makes mistakes.

    February 4, 2009 at 6:53 pm |
  470. Britney

Other people have long and confusing ways of explaining their reasoning of why Phelps should or shouldn't be punished for his completely idiotic choice. I will make mine short and understandable: Drugs are illegal, Phelps knew and still knows this, he did drugs anyway... jail him.

    February 4, 2009 at 7:18 pm |
  471. Anally

I honestly think that Michael Phelps ruined some good opportunities. I know he will probably lose some fans but, I do think that he just made a mistake and eventually he can recover from it. But it may take awhile for people to just let this go. I really hate it how sometimes, some of your favorite celebs can just make one mistake and then everyone starts to hate them because of that one mistake they make. I think people should just remember that he is just a person and he just messed up, and everyone messes up sometimes.

    February 4, 2009 at 7:20 pm |
  472. samgc

i dont think that michel should be able to get away witha pat on the back for doing drugs. if this was an normal person and not an athlete they would probly go to jail and/or rehab.

    February 4, 2009 at 7:32 pm |
  473. Nate

I think that it was the stupidest thing he could do! He was everyones favorite. Why the heck would he risk not only that but MILLION dollar endorsements, and the status of most meals won in the WORLD! IDIOT!

    February 4, 2009 at 7:34 pm |
  474. Jacob

So many people are looking up to him and hearing about that makes a lot of kids thing different of him. He should of thought about all the people who looked up to him before he did that.

    February 4, 2009 at 7:55 pm |
  475. MARY

FOR ME IT DOES CHANGE MY OPINION ABOUT MICHAEL PHELPS BECAUSE HE WAS AN ATHLETE AND ATHLETS ARE SO NATURALY HEALTHY NOT USING MARIJUANA OR ANY OTHER KIND OF DRUG!!

    February 4, 2009 at 8:06 pm |
  476. John

Phelps is young 23 year old. Its not rare seeing other people of this age with illegal drugs. He's in his 20's people. Even though he has to keep up his image as a role model hes just a young guy. He made a mistake. I dont think its such a big deal. Hes human just like you and me. Its marijuana. I mean how many pictures on the internet have you seen of 20 year olds with bongs and other drugs. It was just a bad choice. Most of you guys are overprotected children. I mean seriously. What would you expect? He already got a DUI about 2 years ago and many people dont know that. These stories happen evryday. People should just stay out of his life and stop watching evrything Michael Phelps does evry minute of the day.

    .

    February 4, 2009 at 9:10 pm |
  477. Morgaine

I don't think that it should change ANYONE'S opinion of him. People these days are really good at photoshop, and I think it's idiotic that this happened in the first place. and if someone did want to "ruin" him, why send it in to a British newspaper, and not an American one? Wouldn't that have made more of an impact?

    February 4, 2009 at 9:41 pm |
  478. Emily

Just because Micheal Phelps made a couple of mistakes, doesn't mean he still isn't an incredible athlete. I believe Micheal when he says that he won't do it again.

    February 4, 2009 at 10:33 pm |
  479. Sam K.

I don't think that that he should have made such a big deal out of it. It's not like he's the only 23 year old out there smoking. I'm not for that particular drug but it's not like he was doing a hard drug. The only reason he made such a huge deal out of it is because his publishers, you know there standing back there saying, "Don't worry, they'll buy it"! It's not like he'll never smoke again, and if he doesn't I'll be quite surprised.

I think Michael is wrong, he should and can be arrested if he tested, or test positive for illegal drugs. An inspiring person said people like Phelps are not heros. The do stuff like this this is the wrong message. People's heros should be the hard working parents who provide for their kids

For me, I look at him differently. Phelps is supposed to be a great role model, but if he can't even obey the law, then why should we look up to him? He did make a mistake, but that was his choice and he is going to have to live with the consequences. I do not think he should be looked upon as a bad person, however. We all make mistakes and if he was big enough to admit it, then maybe he deserves a second chance.

This is disgusting... as if everyone hasn't made a mistake in their lives. That's not even the point ! The only reason smoking pot is illegal is because the government can't tax it ! Alcohol, which is legal, kills thousands of people every year. But all pot does is give you the munchies and put you to sleep. I wish the world would grow up and realize there are more important things to gripe about. Dude hit a bong and still won 8 metals. Could you do that ?

Has anyone considered the essence of the words forgive, rehabilitate, counsel, encourage, redirect and support? Because one exhibits errant behavior based on "societal norms" does not make them a BAD person. I personally believe that substance abuse is often a learned behavior perpetuated by validations of acceptance.

i think that he should be punished fairly. not treated with specilty because he's famous. if i was the juge i'd give him the regulated punishment for illigel drug use.

I love Micheal Phelps! Even though he did some bad things, I still think that he is a good person! I am disapointed in that man, because I thought of him as a leader of our nation!

Smoking isn't that big of a deal, every kid at my school does it and my principil doesnt care. Why should there be any Uproar on an Idol to many, (michael phelps) when there are plenty of kids these days doing the same thing

ohkay well i think michael phelps is a great swimmer and i think that one incident shouldn't have a consequence on his career everyone will make a mistake and i think its not a big deal because he is a very professional guy,he should be forgiven and end the story.

i think he is a great swimmer and shouldn't be judge by just one thing that happened. he is my hero and i think he made a mistake but should be forgiven.

Our class has a variety of opinions. Some feel that as an adult he can make his own choices and that it was okay. Others say that it was extremely inappropriate for him to do that because he is a national hero. Some think the Olympic commitee should take away his gold medals. Little kids look up to him, and now they might think it is okay to smoke weed.

I am a swimmer and I don't know what to think. I think he deserves to be treated like everybody else who had commited a crime, but it just made me so sad that he would do that. What kind of hero does BONG!!!

I think people are making a bigger deal of this than they should be. People get arrested for smoking marijuana every day, and it doesn't make the national news. Undoubtedly we wouldn't care if Michael Phelps wasn't famous.

Michael Phelps is a famous athlete and famous peoples lives are reall stressful with all the press breathing down their neck and all. It gets really stressful and one thing to make it less stressful is to smoke dope. So why not let the man roll one every once in a while. Its just as bad as drinking so everyone just needs to lay off and let the man be a man.

Some people are saying that he should be punished for what he did just like everyone else gets punished. Well if a britsh paper published it.. does that mean he wasnt in the United States? If so than no he shouldnt be punished for something that he DID NOT DO in the United States. Where ever he was has the right to punish him the USA does not have the right to punish someone who did something in another country. If he was in the United States than yes he should be punished because it is illegal.

I think what Michael Phelps did was right on telling that he did smoke pot or what ever it is called, but to me it is still a cigarette. He should'nt be judged becouse he smokes pot. He should be judged by his personality and his personality is fine to me.

I think MICHAL PHELPS should go to rehab. So he was being an idiot everybody can be an idoit sometimes, so who cares. But it is bad that he was doing drugs.

Michael Philps is a great swimmer and he did do something that is wrong. He said he was sorry. People should stop juging him. A lot of people smoked at least one time in there life. What he smoked is the same thing as a cigarette so dont judge.

I think that he screwed up but he said he was sorry and should be forgiven.
    He should quit doing drugs.

Who cares if Phelps screwed up once or twice. He is still the fastest swimmer in the world and is still my role model. Whoever took that picture of him is a jerk and screwed up Phelp's life just for some money.

  506. Kayla

Michel Phelps was a role model to a lot of people and i believe that this incident will definitely change peoples perspective on him. i think that he should be punished just like everyone else even though he is famous. What he did sort of changes my perspective on him. Sometimes though, people make to big of a deal about things. They should just learn to let it go!

    February 5, 2009 at 1:32 pm |
  507. Jillian

A lot of kids and teens in the world think of Phelps as a role model. I used to think that too, until I heard about him smoking marijuana. He should be treated as any other person who got caught smoking marijuana instead of having "speacial treatment" for being a "celebrety".

    February 5, 2009 at 1:34 pm |
  508. Travis

I think that Michael Phelps knew what he was doing and i dont think they should let him off so easy. Because if it was anyone else they would have been busted.

  509. Mattea

Whaat happened with Phelps was not to sweet . He should not have been doing drugs in the first place. If he is thinking about going for his nineth medal ,he probablely won't be able to breathe uunder water, rich could cause some very bad trouble. It was a good thing that he told the truth and didn't lie like some of the baseball players, who are sitting there saying "I have not taken drugs to increase my strenth and ablitie to play baseball."He shoud be given a second chance to prove he won't do it again.
People are not all prefect,we all do have our flaws in our character. For one thing is for serten he needs to go before GOD and ask for forgiveness, then go before the people and say he is sorry and ask for another chance.

Micheal Phelps is just a human and people need to see that he has pressure on him. I think that as long as he does not make the same mistake again he is a great role model.

    February 5, 2009 at 3:15 pm |
  511. Kayla

On one hand I think Michel Phelps is human like the rest of us and we all make mistakes. But I also think that what he did was wrong and that he should be treated like any normal person who has commited a crime.

    February 5, 2009 at 3:17 pm |
  512. Colin

I am a swimmer and Michael Phelps is my biggest hero. I looked up to him so much. Imagine how upset I was when i learned of this. I was devastated, I couldn't even be proud of the person I looked up to. At first, I wanted to change my hero to someone else. But, then I started thinking that even though he may not be human in the water, he is still human out of the water. He is human. Humans make mistakes. Especially in today's society where drugs and alcohol are everywhere, I think we can all forgive Michael. He even did the responsible thing of coming clean, he could have claimed that the picture was a fake, but he didn't. So, I think we can all move on and forgive him. Just as I did.

    February 5, 2009 at 3:53 pm |

If anyone besides Michael Phelps were caught smoking marijuana, they would be in jail. Just because he's famous, doesn't make it any better!:(This could have completely changed results in the racing as well

  514. Belerie

Michael Phelps has always been my hero! Although, after hearing the news about this incident, I am very disappointed. I thought he was one of those good people, you know. But I guess not. He should be punished. He is making the US look bad and disappointing all his fans. I still hope that he makes better descions in the future.

    February 5, 2009 at 5:40 pm |
  515. Belerie

I think that Michael Phelps should be punished because other people that do it are punished. This is bad because some younger kids look up to him and they might think it is right if someone famous does it. i am disappointed in what he did. He makes the U.S. look bad that someone in the olympics would do such a thing. I am ashamed of what he did.

    February 5, 2009 at 5:42 pm |

I think that when you say "oh tha'ts ok everyone makes mistakes we are only human" you are setting a really low standard for the human race. Unlike any other creature on the planet we have the ability to choose between right and wrong, good and bad, ethical and unethical, and when you say that we are only human it's like saying we shouldn't be held responsible for our mistakes. Although Michael Phelps is only human and is very young, it does not give him the excuse to do what he did. As a role model for the entire world you have to set yourself up to higher standards, and remember who you are to people internationally. Michael should of been smarter in his decisions, and should be punished accordingly.

"you do the crime you do the time" He shouldn't get off because he is famous. But, then again a lot of people get to disobey the law and not get in trouble.

  521. Ava

Well i think that Michel Phelps should be treated like all the other people and have to do what everyone else has to do when they smoke an illeagle substence so i think he should have a trial case and let the court room deal with what him.

    February 5, 2009 at 7:14 pm |
  522. Zander

The drug Michael Phelps was was using in the picture is illegal. Just because he is a very famous swimmer does NOT make it okay to use it or to even just promote it. There is a saying that goes, "No lawyer is above the law" and if that is true, niether should he. HAHA Virginia!!

    February 5, 2009 at 7:18 pm |
  523. Emily

well if Michel had done on a less serious case then I wouldn't bother me but after the 2004 Olympics he was arrested for drunk driving.I'm kind of taking this personally if he messed up once then I think he is old enough to decide right from wrong so I stopped looking up to him as a role model. If he wants to continue his "wining streek." I think the picture that was posted should be taken seriously because if people look up to him as a role model then there is a high chance that many will follow in is foot steps both in a good way and a bad way.

    February 5, 2009 at 7:23 pm |
  524. Jenna

I think Michael Phelps made a really bad choice! Lots of people thought of him as a hero, and now he learned he was doing illegal stuff? That's just not cool! You can't really trust anyone these days.

  525. Stephanie

Michael Phelps may be one of the greatest swimmers of all time. Maybe he is a role model for thousands of Americans. But how GOOD of a role model is he? Marijuana? What's next?

Really, nothing changes his status of one of the greatest swimmers known to man, but his status as a PERSON........that's changed.

I am a swimmer too and i think that what he did was bad. He said that he wastnt going to do it again but i dont know if all of us ( swimmers) can trust him. thats just my opinion but Micheal Phelphs is still an awsome swimmer!!!

    February 5, 2009 at 8:00 pm |

Michael is a hero to most people to swimming like me, but it's pretty dumb to take illegal drugs. He's only doing it to get money, now that's wrong.

    February 5, 2009 at 8:17 pm |
  528. Holly

Just because Michael Phelps is famous, doesn't mean that his punishment should be less than anybody else's. Everybody makes mistakes, but he should have to suffer the consequences like everybody else. This has made my respect for him shrink, though.

    February 5, 2009 at 8:23 pm |

OK so he did something that he shouldn't have... look around you im sure that 1 out of every 4 people have tried something like that. so your telling me that since he he is famous that he cant be a normal person. he set the example that people make mistakes and that we do stuff we regret. we might be looking down on him for making a bad decision, but look at the rest of the good examples that he has set...

    February 5, 2009 at 8:59 pm |
  532. Vera

Of course people are very opinionated and judgemental. Drugs are a bad way to turn, so for some it would. I, personally, think it was wrong of him. But everyone deserves a second chance.

  533. Nick

I'm so disappointed with Michael Phelps. The greatest Olympian ever goes out and does something this stupid. He has lost a ton of my respect. Don't get me wrong, he is still one of my favorite athletes, but he is no longer my favorite. He is amazing, but was incredibly stupid with this incident. I no longer respect him the same way.

    February 5, 2009 at 9:14 pm |
  534. Alli

Although Michael Phelps earned all of those gold medals, it does not excuse his irresponsible behavior. He should be treated like any other U.S. citizen and except the consequences for his actions.

    February 5, 2009 at 9:29 pm |
  535. Jennifer

Michael Phelps is going to suffer the consequences for his actions just as normal people would. My opinion of him has not changed because I really always saw him as a human. People make mistakes, the thing is one must learn from them in order to make it through life successfully. He will sufffer the consequences and hopefully learn from this.

    February 5, 2009 at 10:03 pm |
  536. Mad

I still respect & admire him for what he has accomplished in sports. His behavior only says something about a human weakness: Success, fame, money & power can make a person think he/she's above everybody & every social "rules", that they cannot be ruined, that people adore him/her so much that whatever he does will be accepted. It's good that Phelps learns this early on, hopefully.

I think that the behavior that Micheal Phelps showed was ridiculous because he is a role model for kids of several ages. I also think that what he did could affect his health as a swimmer because this mistake could affect his lungs and his whole immune system. Sure it was a mistake but he still should watch what he is doing. I think now he is going to have less fans and sponsers this year a the Oylimpics!

Allow me to search your heart and soul and put forth this rhetorical query, who would you trust , the man that surpassed expectations through determination and sacrifice or the hit below the belt , low life punk that tuned in the picture. Michael Phelps is indeed an American Role Model, working hard training for the olympics – focusing on winning and all the gold medals. But holy crap people everyone makes mistakes and everything happens for a reason. I dont think everyone should put so much pressure on him. He has brought america many wins in the olympics and you cant ask for much more. Let him live a little, its his choice. If he decides that smoking marijuana is what he wants, let him, he just has to realize what kind of choices hes making and he will have to suffer the consequences. Let people be there own person, thats why we live in america. The charges he faces will be purely his own decision.

My nine year old brother looks up to Michael Phelps. He has a poster of him in his room and he named the fish he got for Christmas after him. I know that Michael did something wrong, but he's only human! He's not the first person to smoke and it doesn't affect the way he performs in the olympics. It's his choice to do that, not ours!!!

    😐
Anyone else who would have done illegal drugs would have gotten arrested, but Michael Phelps is only getting a 3-month suspension
    ->now that's drugged up! (-;

I think that Michael Phelps made a mistake, but who dosn't.
An yes hes our idol but i would think that kids these days our smart enough to not do drugs just beacuse Michael Phelps did! He was most likely not thinking, even thought he's famous dosn't mean that hes not under pier presure still.

The problem is its not just one offense its two. He got caught with other drugs too. I think it will happen again later in life.

My 6th grade class watches your broadcast every morning.
I appreciate the heads up for teachers. I teach in a catholic school. I will probably show the rest of the video later in the day. I will definitely discuss it. They are very curious about it. This will serve as a springboard for a good discussion on revenge and ethics.

I think that if someone doesn't want to mary someone he should just leave it at that... He shouldn't throw acid in someones face. Something should happen from this she cant see and its because she didnt want to may someone. I personaly think that something should happen to him..... Watever happens happens....

The guy who hosted the attack shouldn't get acid dumped in his face. The government cant do that to him.... TOO BAD

Alright, i think that what Phelps did was totaly wrong. He is setting a bad example for kids all around the world. Since he got away with it,other kids who hope to be an olympic athelte may think that it's ok to do that kind of stuff and think that they can get away with it. Although Michael appologized for what he did, it still doesn't make up for the fact that he may have influenced alot of young kids to do drugs and what not.

I thinkt that they should have at least made him spend a few nights in jail and have to pay a huge fine...but thats just my opinion.

🙂 peace out my homie g's
