No, I don't really think she should be paid, I mean she knew what she was getting into when her husband ran for president. Plus, shouldn't it be fun traveling and talking to people from around the world, and planning large dinner parties? Not much real 'work' there if you ask me.

First Ladies should be paid for what they do because they do a lot of work. Even though they weren;t really chosen by the country to be the first lady, they have certain responsibilities that they have, and they work as hard as others who are paid.

The first lady wasn't elected herself, so there is no reason for her to be paid. All the stuff the first lady does is extra, she doesn't NEED to do any of it. That would also be really cheap because she would be doing work that any one can do, but she is the only one who can because she is the first lady. That would be getting unfair pay. Also, if you are working on a farm for the night so you could sleep (some people do that) if you do extra work, you wouldn't be paid. Its like going to some random person's house, throw away their trash, and wanting twenty bucks.

I couldn't convince you that they shouldn't be paid. The first lady has no specific role and shouldn't have a salary considering they aren't technically doing anything. The one exception would be a first lady who is active in government and constantly helping, like Hillary Clinton was or Michelle Obama plans to be. Then i wouldn't know what to do because they have no specific role but are still contributing.

I think that all of the First Ladies who become that should not be paid. They really do not do that much when the President is in office. They're not required to do good deeds and they shouldn't feel obligated! It's not like their husband doesn't already make more than enough. And just think about all the luxuries they get just for being a part of the presidential family, private jets and personal chefs. For years now the first ladies have never gotten paid.

Most to all presidents that run for office are very wealthy. Instead of paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to the first lady, they should give it to the struggling auto industry.

I think if she is performing any duty above and beyond being just a "wife", filling in for her husband (and he was getting paid), or actually working on a committee, meeting with foreign leaders, that would otherwise be paid postions, then she should get paid. Not an annual salary but she could get an hourly salary. Or contractual services. If she does not want to work then she won't get paid, but we expect a whole lot of kindness for little compensation. I feel that past first ladies should have been compensated as well but if nobody speaks up it won't change. The house, cars, and travel are all perks that the President recieves as well and he still gets paid, so why if she is obligated (forced) to perform a duty for the country can't she get paid? We think that first ladies should be paid. It isn't fair for her to do things for the White House and not get ANY pay. Now the pay doesn't have to be very much ,but anyone who works should get paid a little pay, it doesn't matter the amount. It would be like teachers teaching students and not getting any pay. So whatever she does she gets paid. Were not saying a lot but she does deserve some money.

The job of first lady should indeed be payed. On one condition, that she helps out with the role of her husband. For me it depends. If they did something (like Hillary) then they should get paid but if they don't do anything then forget it, don"t pay them. Not trying to be mean.

Ask all of the command spouses in the military what they do and how much they get paid. A lot of them have given up careers for their country. We move around and often find it hard to find emplyment. As our spouses progress in their career, we find our job increasing. We settle our children into their lives and and start on settling our husbands squadrons into theirs. As a commander, my husband needed me to be on the front lines with the spouses. When deployments came along, I was their advocate. I made sure that the squadron was aware of illnesses, losses and needs. When there was a loss I ,in conjunction with the base,was the one to help with all the needs of the family. I was the "foster mother" to 100 service men and women. I made sure we had social events to ensure that they were a tight group. In all, there was no pay...just service. Hoping to make a difference. I will take insult if the first lady becomes a paid postion.

I don't think she should get paid. She doesn't have official responabilities, even though she may do a lot, and she gets other benefits as well. The President gets paid enough so that she doesn't really need to be paid- and so why should we waste more of our tax dollars?

The First Lady has to give up her job for her husband, in that case, she should be given a small amount of money or whatever the wage of her job was. She has the job of being the First Lady and lets people see into her life. She needs to get some reward for that.
