Stopping Dropouts

There've been a LOT of education stories on our show lately: students getting paid to study, parents getting paid to get involved in students' education, and Wednesday's coverage of a California high school with an incredibly high dropout rate.  The first two of these stories are controversial; the last is downright disturbing.

You've heard people tell you before why dropping out is a bad idea, so you don't need to hear it from me.  But we'd like to know what you think could be done to stop teenagers from giving up on school.  What would you tell people who want to drop out?  What would you do to encourage them to keep showing up to class?

i think paying the parents to get there children to study is not the right choice. Adults should already be involved telling there child to study. Think about when there in college and fail because there not being told to study

Personally, I don't think there's much that can be done. No one can truly be forced to stay in school. I love school. I enjoy learning new things, that's why I'm staying in school and going to college, but for some people that's not the case. Some people hate school. Maybe they get picked on, or they struggle in their classes for some reason. Whatever the reason, I don't think we will ever find the perfect solution to the problem. If you want to stay in school great. If not, I'm sorry to hear that.

I think that paying students is not a good way. Kids should be happy to be able to go to school because many people in 3rd world countrys have to pay. We shouldn't use money as a reward just for goingto school.

i don't think it is a good idea for teens to dropout of school. with just a G.E.D. & not go to college. In todays society you realy do need a college degree to get a decent job with okay benefits or insurance. that is if you want gas money, grocries & other bills to be paid.

Well, maybe their future work doesn't involve more studying. Maybe they want to build houses, that doesn't require a smart and thinking head. Or maybe they feel that it's too much pressure to be in school, or they just need a break. You couldn't control what they'll do.

I believe one of the biggest incentives to staying in school is what will happen to your future. Without a least a high school diploma what kind of job, salary, and lifestyle will you be able to enjoy? I can tell you ahead of time that the job your going to get will be long horrendous hours at a measly minimum wage. Or even worse, you might even have to live on welfare. Now just imagine what your lifestyle would be like in this situation. The answer is no lifestyle. So do you still want to drop out of school?

If kids are having to drop out of school because their family doesn’t have enough money then maybe the state or local government could pay the kids who go to school and make good grades. Or the state could say that all kids must finish high school and that they can not drop out.

? I think one way you can stop students from dropping out is if you have fun things to do in the classes, and if you have more free stuff to do after school so that they will look forward to coming to school.

I think people dropping out of school are not always doing it for bad reasons. They do it for their families and to get a job to support them. Still, getting an education is a vital thing to succeed in our society (also for getting a better job) and I strongly encourage people not to drop out without the right intentions.

It is important to stay in school to get a good education. If you don’t stay in school you won’t be able to get a good job. You need an education to become successful and make money. Sometimes I don’t like school but I would never drop out because I know that if I do then I won’t have the knowledge to be in a career that I want.

I honestly think that if you are going to drop out you should sit back think about it and then go over a list of reasons of why you want to drop out and what will you do if you did drop out(oh say like a job, collage, GED, life). You shouldn’t just drop out of school because you don’t like it and think it’s boring but if you honestly think you have to then do it I’m not stopping you.

I think that all that can be done is to encourage the students to not drop out and give them reasons why they shouldn’t. If they still choose not to listen, then that’s their own loss. They will regret their decision later on in life. I think in order to be successful you need an education and I encourage all of those who plan on staying in school. But, if you choose otherwise then good luck.

I think should have more fun at school or for student that need to work for money they can just go to school 3 day in a week. I should say if you finish high school you can find a work that give you more money so then go to school. I think give them to learn something more interesting or for the person that work just give them to learn about the work that they need to know for their job.

Well kids drop out of school for many reasons. It could be money problems, boredom of school, or just believing that they can’t pass in school. If money is the case then I believe the paying student’s idea could help out, but I think there should also be a program for students who can work and go to school to. If boredom is the problem then I believe that school should be made more interesting and that There should be more “fun” in school. If failure is why they don’t stay in school then I believe they should be convinced to see a counselor and to be worked with.

I think that we should do everything we can to keep kids in school. Lots of kids drop out to help support their families, but they could support them better if they get a good education and get a better job. I think paying the kids or parents is a good idea because then they feel like they are supporting their family by staying in school.

The first thing that I would ask the students who are thinking about dropping out is, why are they dropping out . I bet most of them would say its either because the subject that they are learning or because the teachers are really boring. Some of the ways that I would encourage the students to stay in school would be you can get involved in sports , clubs, and other fun activities that are more interesting.

I think it’s impossible to stop teenagers from giving up on school. Because if they quit then they quit, you can’t force teenagers to go to school because those who do quit have good reason. Maybe not all teenagers but some do. Those who quit are quitters, but what may be possible to help students go to school is to show them personally what happens to those who quite. Like being homeless, if you have no education then you have no money to support yourself, and no money means that you have no shelter, no food, no warn clothes, if your lucky and you have family that supports you and have tons of money then you’re lucky. Basically the more education you have the more money you have. The less education your have then the less money you have. I would tell those people who want to quite to think twice, because once you quit then I can guarantee that you will regret it. And then you would want to go to school but then it’s too late. I don’t think I can encourage you more than I already have even though some of it may not be nice, life is life and you live it every day. No one said life would be easy. But it can be if you let. All you have to do is Go to school!

Maybe those schools with high dropout rates could hire several career counselors to coach students through high school from freshman year on. If the schools made sure that every student had a chance to discuss their future with a career counselor before they could drop out, some students might be encouraged to continue going to school. School might not be exciting, but if someone was constantly encouraging students to just make it through just four years of high school, the students would have better opportunities in life. Because when it comes down to it, I’d rather stay in school for four short years and get a better paying job than someone who drops out of school and suffers the consequences of it for the rest of their life.

I feel that you shouldn’t drop out of school because I have two brothers and two sisters and I am the youngest and both of my sisters dropped out but the one who is just a little older than me is getting her GED but my other sister didn’t. my oldest brother dropped out but he still graduated because he also got his GED. I AM NOT going to drop out of high school.

I can understand why high scholars are dropping out these days like most said it is boring. Like most teens I go to school to see my friends. I say I want to but never will. I mean I want an education so I can go to college and get a good job. Also even if I wanted to my parents would never let me.

I think that you can't stop dropouts really. You can't control it and if the students are saying that they are dropping out because of school and class being boring you should probably make it funner for them because then it will encourage them to come to class and they will have something to come for. Everyone deserves an education and if the teachers are ignoriing the situation and allowing it without effort to make them interested in school then they are throwing away a chance to have a more awesome american citizens of society. Thankyou

I don't think there is an answer to stop students from leaving school. All students have different opinions and all students learn differently. You can not be forced to stay in school so the best thing to do is just try to talk to them and help them out the best way you can.

i think that this is one of the cases where you should or could pay the students to come to school. This is because it sounds like the students problems are that they don't make money to support themselves so they're dropping out.

They should make school not so hard! We have to go for so long we need more free time here so that we can get the stuff we did not get done done. Then if we had all our stuff done we could just relax and talk with our friends. They want us to do that at lunch but come on now I just want to eat not talk. So i say MORE FREE TIME!

I think that students should be able to drop out if they want to. Think about it if they drop out they don't really affect us and there not ruining our life's , just there's. When they drop out they said that the government notifies the parents and tells them their kid has to go to school or they will go to jail.

I don't think there is anything that we can do to stop students from dropping out. Why would anyone want to drop in the first place though? They're just ruining their future, and sliming the chance to get a good paying job to live off of.

Students who want to drop out should think about life beyond high school. If you stay in school, you will be helping your family more in the long run, because you'll be able to earn more money to support yourself and your family. Schools should target students' interests to get them more involved to stay in school with more activities, trips, staff vs. student games; these were just a few of the suggestions that we had. Teachers should inspire students to want to come to school by making classes interesting. This is Mrs. Elrod's Contemporary Issues class "dropping out" a comment just for you, Carl.

i think that if students want to drop out they can and just ruin there life and the goverment should notify the parents but if the parents dont do anything either than i guess they can just drop out and not ever get a education and never get a good job.

Dropping out is a ridiculous thing. Most highschoolers dont actually think about their future as much in education wise. But going for money benefits isnt the right thing too do. Highschoolers should go for their own benefits.of being educated. Dropping out, will cause major problems in the future to dropouts once they are older. Highschool is everything, its the base and the steps toward college and getting a career. But dropping out only effects them and maybe their family. not us. Though students should stay in school, no matter how boring it may be.

People shouldn't drop out. It's like throwing away your future. Think about it this way-if you endure all your school, you'll get a good career making $50,000 a year. If you drop out, you'll either end up as a hobo begging for nickels on the curb of an intersection or work at Burger King flippin' burgers for minimum wage for the rest of your' life.

I think that if students want to drop out, they can. Yeah, it will affect them later if they want a job or something like that. But if they get there G.E.D. they still can become pretty successful if they play there cards right. But that would be pretty hard to become successful while being a high-school-dropout

I don't really think that there is anything that you can do about it. if they want to ruin their life, then why should it be are problem. They are the ones that are going to have trouble in life. They may not be able to pay for things in life. It's going to be difficult for them. My cousin is a drop out. She dropped out so that she could go live with her boyfriend in Seattle. After a few months she got pregnant. Now sahe is having trouble in life. She has to live with his parents, and it's hard for her. She just had the baby too, and that doesn't make it any better.

Dropping out of school should be between their family and them. if their parents are ok with it they should take online classes so they could get educated and still not go to school, especially if they are having fights at school or they have to go past bad neighborhoods. this way they are safer and they cant skip school because you would have to take the classes at home.

I think that its entierly the students choice to drop out. If they want to drop out and destroy there lives then thats there problum, why should it afect others around them. You shouldent put the parents in jail just because there children don't listen. Its the students who should be punished for there actions, not the parents. As long as the parents try to keep there kids in school we should be doing this.

i see that some people have to dropout to help with the family but the people who drop out cause they don't like school are idiots they are the ones who will work at wendys and clean toliets just do the worst jobs that pay so little if you stay in school and maybe go to collage you can get quite a bit of money to buy stuff you want and just have a good life

There's not much you can do from stopping someone from dropping out. I think that maybe school shouldn't be as long and there shouldn't be as much homework. We're still kids or teenagers no matter what. We need a little more free time. Summer vacation is great, but two and a half months isn't good enough. What i'm getting at is that some people are probably dropping out because of the stresses school brings us. We need less school and more time for our selves and family!!!

I think that dropping out stupid because you go nowhere in life. If people want to drop out that is their choice. If you go and drop out it will look bad on your resumae. So you go apply apply at Dunder Mifflin and they won't care about the application. You can't pay bills, food, etc... You drop out of high school, you're done.

i think that dropping out of school is what you choose to do to mess up your life. If you drop out of school at an early age your hurting your chances eminecely. If you ever try to get a good paying job but your not smart enough to get hired, then thats your own falt. But then again, if your really struggling with school, it might be a good idea to drop out because all it's doing is making it hard and stressing yourself out. It's better to stay in school and finish the few years of high school, then to mess up your life.

I think poeple should make school more interesting and fun. They should do more learning activities and get poeple active. If school is fun they won't even know they are learning. I think dropouts don't think cause if they did they wouldn't consider dropping out. School can be hard but if you try you can do it.

I think students should be able to drop put if they want, it's their life, they do what they want with it. But I do agree with the idea that parents should go to jail if they allow their kids to drop out. I also think they should at least try to make school a little easier to do, and not give out so much homework, that is probably why most kids are dropping out. But I'm not sure it very very possible to stop school dropp outs, i mean unless the government makes it a law that you can't drop out, then that might solve something. But it seems like kids are wanting to drop out, so you just can't stop it.

I think that if kids drop out of school for family porposes is ok. But just try to make school more fun for them. Do stuff that they think is ok, or fun. If they are dropping out for money, then just go with it and let them, their family is more important to them. Just try not to let kids drop out just because they think school is boring. Just make it more fun for them.

I think students shouldnt drop out of school, it will effect the comunitys of america. The students will be most likly to get involved in drugs or gang activetys. Students today are more temted to drop out in the larger citys or in boarder town. That is why students houldnt drop out of school.

I think that kids need to be encouraged to go to school. The teachers should make their classrooms more entertaining and should make there lesson more hands on. That way the kids don’t get bored during class. I think that the community should also help out the families in need so that the kids aren’t pressured to have to drop out to help raise money for their families.

I think that the students in this particular high school should stay in school instead of worrying about their family’s financial situations. The reason that their family is in such bad shape is more than likely because their parents dropped out of high school. Knowing this should motivate them even more to stay in school so they don’t end up with financial problems just like their parents.

No one likes school all the time, but everyone puts up with it. Yes, teachers hassle you and the day never seems to end, but what we do in high school determines our future as adults, and it's up to us to suck it up and try our best.

I have a cousin who dropped out of high school very early, and believe me, it did not work out. I think the problem is that students don't see the damage that dropping out does to them. They think that anything is better than school. We need ways to keep the kids interested in what’s happening in the classroom, so they know that staying in school is for the better.

I think that it is never a good idea to drop out of high school. If you do then you are going to get a low paying job and you probably will not enjoy it. You will always have to work and you will most likely be paid minimum wage. Personally I don't want live pay check to pay check my whole life.

I think this is crazy. I mean kids drop out of high school and it is pretty common but 26 a second? My entire class would be gone in like 15 minutes.

I believe the roots of the problem lie in the culture of the students. The students attempt to follow the lifestyle of many cultural celebrities. One of the most prominent lifestyles that impact their lives is the one of rap artists. Students hear this music and want to achieve the same goals in their life, such as being a gangster in the streets, yo. The obvious solution to this problem would be to ban all forms of rap in the U.S. It’s the only way, we have no other options.

If you wanted to prevent students from dropping out of school then the rest of georgia would have to start paying the students to attend classes like in Atlanta. Students have different reasons to drop out, so the school could ask students what they could change.

If I had to talk to a soon to be drop out, I would tell them that what they are doing is only for the now. You have to think about what your future would be like with a high school education vs. dropping out. Look at the options before you engage. To encourage them to keep going to class, I would let them know that the grass is much greener with a high school education. You will be open to many more jobs and opportunities.

No matter what we do there will be students that do drop out they have their reasons and they can keep it to themselves but I don’t want people thinking that I think it is ok to drop out of school it might be for those people who drop out because they got a really good job offer in another state but hey what are the chances of that happening to all the kids who drop out you know the 58% who become hobos and factory workers.(also kids who drop out can't Become Ware-wolfs OR level 37 Paladins)

For students who have a real will power to drop out of school, there is not much you can do to stop them, except trying to make it less monotonous maybe? But without a high school education many things in your life can go down hill, students need support from families, inspiration from teachers, and discipline to keep them in school.

i dont think theres anything you can do if a kid already has it in their mind that there going to drop out its kinda hard to talk them out of it. unless you have like tons of money and you tell them you'll give them 5 grand if they graduate high school but i dont know who would do that. so its just a personal choice kids are stubborn if they want to do something there gonna do it

I think that dropouts should be given other options than school. Some people just don’t like to sit in school and would rather be working or doing something that they like to do. There are schools that specialize in certain jobs but there could be more of them, this would give a good alternative to the dropouts. Or even more classes related to life would be a good alternative than making them take the required math, social studies, science, and language arts.

Dropping out is not a good idea because almost every job there is requires the use of math, literary, some science, or some social studies. Even with a GED, most jobs won’t pick you over someone with a diploma.

If a student wants to drop out you must give them the facts of what their lives are going to be like with out an education. Also I think it helps when the parents are involed and know what is going on at school. Although if you give them these facts and what not the student will choose on their own.

I think that schools are not doing enough to stop the rising number of drop outs. It's clear that if students are dropping out that the schools aren't doing the right thing or they are not doing enough to help keep their students in classes.

I think it would be very hard to decrease the amount of student drop outs. Maybe if parents were more involved with their kids and their school work it wouldn’t be as bad. If the teachers helped them more and made it easier for the kids to understand it could help. If a kid wants to drop out of school though it’s hard to change their mind.

I believe that there needs to be more emphasis put on how much better off you will be if you do in fact get your high school diploma. I don't know the exact numbers, but the average income of someone with a high school diploma is much better than that of someone without one.

When I think about people dropping out of high school, I immediately think bad idea. I really only think that because I had a friend drop out because he was just bored with school, but he soon realized that it was a really bad idea. He couldn’t get a good job and then he finally just decided to join the army. However this plan also backfired because he found out he wasn’t qualified for it. So really before anyone drops out they should seriously consider the consequences of their actions.

I think Jefferson High School has the right idea of having teachers build strong bonds with students. Also cleaning up the community or providing cheap bus services would provide students with a safe form of transportation to school. Most students drop out of high school to work; however earning your high school diploma pays dividends later on. In the end, the work pays off.

I think funding the schools only goes so far for the kids. The real problem was mentioned when they said they parent were mostly dropouts. Without the support of a parent a kid will not succeed in school and drop out. There is also the problem of violence in schools. Although they may have tightened security in the school students will still join gangs. I do think the school has the right idea but needs to get to the source of the problem.

I think that dropping out of school is a bad thing. I think that people should go to school for their own sake. If you want a good job that pays good then i would say go to school. I guess that even if you wanted to drop out i mean you could get your GED. But all I am saying is that students should not drop out!!

If the parents would just be more involved with their childs school life. yes school is boring but it necessary these days. Maybe if there were more things like siminars for parents or more activities during school for students besides school work then the dropout rate would decrease.

You can’t usually change a students mind about dropping out, but you can try. If a student has a legit reason why they think they should drop out then there is no changing their mind. What I would do to try to change their mind is tell them the consequences of what might happen if you do.

That it is the STUPIDEST idea EVER! Just dont drop out who cares if it is boring you go to school for a reason and that is to learn, it's not suppose to be fun, and when people drop out it's their prepareness to fail. Not having a High School Diploma makes it a LOT harder to find jobs since there are so many people that do actually finish high school and even go to college. Go to high school, its worth the work cause it will pay off.

I think that the schools should really start talking to the students about their lives after high school. I feel that if they explain to them that it will be hard for them to be successful in life without a high school diploma to help support them. I also feel that the students who are not considering dropping out should talk to the students who are considering dropping out as a choice. I feel this way because sometimes students have a bigger impact on other students than a teacher would. Honestly I would tell a person that is considering dropping out that I feel they are making the wrong choice because once you get out of school you have to work for the rest of your life. I would ask them why they want to start working everyday of their life now when they have time now to sit back and have fun with their friends while they are in high school.

I honestly dont know how I would prevent someone from dropping out. I personally never even thought of dropping out, it was never an option. Maybe if we made classes more interactive and enjoyable like finding new teaching techniques that got students excited that might be able to keep students involved. Also adding new elective classes right now as a senior i have taken almost all of our schools electives I have nothing to look forward to and its my senior year. Making new classes might be the refreshment most schools need.

For some there is not much that we can do to help them choose to not drop out, because if their parents dropped out then why shouldnt they be able to? Some may not realize how badly they could be hurting their future, so maybe if schools gave presentations on why kids should stay in school it might help. Maybe if there was a better support group for kids that have parents who dropped out and are considering it they might stay longer. Yes, school is boring sometimes, no, its not fun to go and learn about things we find uninteresting, but yes, it is worth it. The probability of getting a good paying job goes down without a highschool diploma. Schools need to help kids decide what they want after highschool and help them focus on their path getting there.

I think by not pressuring the parents to force them on their kids to go to school which will then not make them go to school, I'm pretty sure if my parents were bugging me every day about going to school I would not wanna go to school. You get up in the morning and go see your friends at school, go through about 5 hours of school and then you are done, students make it sound like they are gonig to die by gonig to school but really it not that bad. Grow up kids, its life!

Dropping out of school would devastate any kid’s future. Now they can take a test to get there GED but that’s not good enough anymore most employers wont look at and application unless its like McDonalds but who wants to start a career there. I think the students shouldn’t drop out because they will ruin their lives in the long run. They can’t really get anything without an education. Schools should show student that nothing good ever happens when you drop out of school.

For all the people who want to drop out of school I would tell them that first of all everything thing a teacher would tell them. Here’s what I would say.........................
I came close myself in dropping out of school b/c of how boring and stupid I thought it was. But then I thought what’s the point in dropping out of school? is it so I can get a minimum wedge job that I hate, so that I could only pay bills and not get anything that I would want just to have, or is it because I care not to support my family.
I don't know about you but to me it would seem more on the logical side to just get things done at school and get rewarded later.

I think that if students could find something more interesting in school they might want to stay. Like if you've ever watched Freedom Writers many of the students became more involved due to the English teacher incorporating their lives into the reading and trying to connect more with the students. If kids felt that school was fun and worth staying they might not drop out. Another idea might be trying to show them the impact that education has on their future. Maybe holding field trips to go into businesses or speak to managers in corporations to see what kind of employees they look for and what kind of education is expected. Show these students that life can be so much better if you just stick to your education and look for a better profession one that maybe pays more. My sister dropped out of school to get a job and now she is stuck at home because she got laid off and can’t find another job because she never graduated high school. Bringing inspirational speakers in to talk about the importance of an education also helps a lot too, I know that I will never drop out I want to be able to show my younger siblings the importance of a good education.

I think that there isn’t a way to stop kids from dropping out of school. I think that kids say that school is boring and to easy for them so what’s the point…but I think that it’s really to hard and they have no one to ask for help, or maybe it’s because they think that it will get them some attention, or make them look smart or cool. But really, I think they just think they aren’t good enough. I know that having a big family like I do I feel like that and sometimes will do drastic things to get attention, and I think that that is the main reason that people drop out.

I don’t think there is much that can be done about high school dropouts. I personally like school and have big plans in my future to go to college, but there are other people that don’t have that in mind. I think it is wrong to pay parents to get involved. Parents should want their kids to have a good education no matter what life style they live. I would think if a parent or both parents didn’t graduate they wouldn’t want their kids to drop out and have hard times finding jobs. Everyone knows school is boring but there are ways to make it fun you don’t have to go to school with a bad attitude.

I think that school drop outs are bad for the economy. When we have no more students going to high school they won’t get good jobs and make money. I I think that it is wrong to pay students to go to school, because the schools already put tons of money in for the student’s education. Also I think teachers should have more fun with the students like have more activities and more things that they are interested in.

I think that school dropouts are dumb because why would u want to dropout I mean if u don’t go to school u don’t get to see your friends and make plans with them and when u get older u cant get a job or anything. So nobody should dropout and if teachers and schools want kids to stop dropouts make the classes a little more fun so they will want to be in school. And have more school games and events and just more fun so kids will enjoy going to school and yeah just make it more fun. And make after school events and so that they can get help with homework and hang out with friends and just chill out because believe me that’s what we like to do.

I think that students shouldn't drop out of school because there are better things you can do in life with an education. you can get better jobs and you'll be able to support a family if you have one things may not go right but things can turn in the end. see i dropped out and all it did was lead me into trouble and got me locked up so as people keep dropping out they could possibly end up like me or even worse so who ever drops out will most likely have troubles in the future.

I think that a good way to get students to stay in school is to pay students for getting good grades. Some places already do this and it helps. For kids who can’t get a job and there parents don’t have money, it’s a good way to get them money to live and grades to get them through high school.

I think student drop outs are a huge issue right now. They think they need to stop going to school to raise money and support their family. They do not realize how important an education is, and how valuable it truly is. If someone was going to drop out, I would tell them that would be a horrible, immature decision. I would tell them how much they could change in the world, and how much they could potentially help their family. A possible solution would be to have a locked down campus so no one leaves. Or there could be a truancy officer that goes to the child’s house, and brings the kid to school.

I think that you can't stop everyone from dropping out of school, but by hiring more counselors and intervention specialists, schools could possibly prevent more students from dropping out. Schools could also prevent student drop outs by making classes more entertaining while still remaining educational.

Honestly it is the student's choice to drop out. If they want to ruin their future dreams, go ahead and drop out. What the schools could try to do is make classes more exciting and interesting while also teaching them something. Help them want to learn, not be bored and simply drop out because they want to do something more exciting. Think about the students and how they learn. The teachers need to stop teaching the old fashioned boring way and teach with fun.

I feel that the kids who drop out of school are the ones that have to because they have to help support their families and the ones that are struggling and falling through the cracks. I feel that the solution to this problem is to make the students feel that they have a place at there school and that falling behind is not an option. If every child has a purpose they will succeed.

i think that to stop the drop out raet for kids, they should make school a little more fun for students, by going on fleid trips, and having fun activities at school the schools should also make them feel like they are an important part of the community, by doing fund raisers to help out families in their community

the reason why people dropped out of school because they school may not have classes that they want to do when they get out of school, and some teachers make learning boring. I will tell the students why you are dropping out? how are you going to get a job that wont have a diploma, jobs today dont higher people even if they have a GED, they want some sort of college degree. I say if schools want kids to stay in school they need to find classes that they want to have and they are interested. i had to go 25 miles away from my home just to learn what i wanted and alot of people cant do this so have classes that are fun

I know people from my school that have dropped out and all I felt was neccesary to tell them was that they are extremley dumb because they won't be able to get any where in life when they feel like they are ready to take resposible actions and pursue their dreams. I think that students just think that they could be doing more interesting things rather than being in school and thats when they get the idea to drop out. This is the worst idea that could ever cross a students mind. They dont think about how much it will impact their lives if they just simply quit. School sculpts your life and I dont understand why someone would want to loose hope of someday having a good job and setting a good example for their younger siblings or their own children. I dont think that someone can truly be succesful if they start quitting this early in life to drop out of highschool.
It is amazing to me the stupid mistakes that people make without even thinking.
    Stay in school!!

The only way to help students from dropping out is to try to show them that school is really important because you learn everyday things like math and reading that you'll use forever, without learning those things what kind of job will you get most likely not a good job. Any person can think of all the good things about staying in school, but everyone has a mind of there own so if a person wants to dropout there going to, even if they heard all the good things about having a diploma and knowing they made it, its there chose they can drOp-oUt if they want to, also they might have a good reason to dropout by helping the family, because family is everything.

I would tell students that want to drop out is what do you want to do with your life? Do you want to live the life probily your parents are living right now? Living in the same run down area your living now and have a job you hate getting up for every morning for the rest of your life. Some solutions i would have for the students is to give them information/statistics about what would happen if you were a high school drop out and what kind of life you would live with out a high school education. Then again you really can't persuade high school students who have already made up their minds about dropping out, because in the end its their choice and their life, and they will do what ever they want to do even if it isn't the best choice at all.

I personally think that having a good support system can really help kids stay in school. However I also know that some kids do not have the proper support system at home that is required to be a positive role model, so having the right teachers in the class room can really make a difference. I understand that some people think school is boring and a waste of time but without school even the simple things in life can be made very hard. So go to school and your education why its still free and make something of yourself.

If kids want to drop out it’s honestly their choice. But to explain in school why you shouldn’t drop out I think is very very important thing to do. Teenagers don’t get involved enough in school to learn the importance of education until they drop out and realize what a horrible choice they made. Kids tend to drop out because parents work to much, things get to hard in their life, or just there isn’t enough money in the family and there are so many different things going on so teenagers think that dropping out is a good way to get away from it all. Making kids feel like they fit in is very important, giving them a good education, and making sure they get involved (which might take encouragement) could change everything. And in the end possibly save their lives.

we should'nt have to tell them anything. If they havge it hard at home and they need to help get money to have a place to live then htye should be able too, but if there under the age of 18 i think that if there high school drop outs the schoolsshould have something in a computer system that shows it. in the case of if someone was to drop out and get a job before 18 the computer system will tell them they dropped out and they can't hire them.

You can always try to stop drop outs but it will hard to do that since so many people do. I don’t think we can really stop it because if kids don’t want to come they won’t even if we try. Hopefully most kids will stay in school so they can see their friends. Because I agree school is boring but I stay in school to see my friends. I think maybe if their friends persuade them to keep going to school then they may stay in school. If they stay in school then they will have a better paying job and if they want to they will have the chance to go to college.

I believe dropouts can be helped by more family, friend, and staff (of the school) support.
Also another thing that could help is a class period in the day that is devoted to doing school work. I had a class similar to that and it really helped! But you can’t just rely on staff, family & friends. The student themselves actually have to care. So what could be an incentive is maybe every Friday or Monday could be a 2 hour break at the end of the day for students who are improving their grades.

I dont think that you could ever perminatly stop kids from dropping out of school. I do think that teachers and the staff of schools could make classes more fun for students though so it makes them actuallly want to school. Parents need to be more involved with there schooling too and encourage them to always be successful in school so maybe they will want to go to better there future.

Schools should train teachers not to treat high school students like children, most kids in high school are starting to become their own person and by being disrespected by teachers it makes school a very unappealing place to be. Luckily in my experience I have rarly faced this where teachers talk down to you like a child, but all of my friends have not had the same experience as myself, they get the brunt of this disrespect and in turn they disrespect their teachers and eventually give up on school. What I have told three of my close friends who were close to dropping out or did drop out is that in today society they can not be successful without a high school diploma. Also I tell them that they have come so far and spent so many years in school already why quit in high school especially senior year. Only one of those three came back to school which I feel is really disappointing, but I know if they felt like they would be respected as an individual adult they would have returned.

I think you could tell them that it is really hard to get a job when you’re a drop out. So if you stay in school and graduate and get a degree you could go to college and get a high paying job. It may take more time and may be boring but it pays off in the long run.

There are numerous things that the school could do to help prevent students from dropping out, such as showing them what most high school drop outs amount to, which is nothing. School’s could try to proved more transportation to help kids get to school. If a student comes in that their family has a high drop out rate in their family they should have to meet with a counselor type thing discuss with them their feeling on the students school life.

Most of the people who dropped out have parents who did the same thing. If we tell the students that if they drop out they will end up just like their parents, they will have no money and several kids. If they stay in school they will have a better education and a good job. Their lives will be a lot easier even if they just get their GED. This might stop some of the drop out problem.

It’s understandable that some of the kids would like to drop out, because if your parent0 never finished school then the kids might think that school is just a waste of time to be in school. To think about it all, for school there’s supplies and then sports fees and everything else, and if the family is poor then it’s hard to decide to go to school or to work. To make the kids want to stay in school make them feel smart and comfortable.

Dropping out is a serious subject, but it’s not always for a bad reason. Like if the student’s parent is sick or something, they would need to stay home and take care of them. But when the parent is better they should get back into school.

Dropping out is a serious subject, but it’s not always for a bad reason. Like if the student’s parent is sick or something, they would need to stay home and take care of them. But when the parent is better they should get back into school. I think everyone needs to get a good education to be successful in life.

I dont think people should drop out of school. I dont think they should because there are not many things you can do without graduating. Yu wont be able to get a very good job. Also most people who drop out end up being homeless.

I think that if someone wants to drop out that that isn’t the best thing but I think that someone shouldn’t just drop out because school is boring. I know sitting in class isn’t fun but its for your own good. Later in life you will probably regret not staying in school because it helps you get a job. It is extremely hard to get a job without finishing school.

I think that people who are going to drop out have already made up their mind, so to prevent people from making that choice; teachers that teach in middle school can talk about the effects of dropping out of school early. Like how it’s a lot harder to get a good job, which in turn makes it harder to get nice things, like a house or the car they want. I think that would make them think twice about dropping out. I know I’m not dropping out, and I think that people who do are making a decision that they will eventually regret.

I think it would be a bad idea to dropout cause then you’ll be flipping burgers at burger king your whole life hardly making minimum wage. Our parents pay every year for us to get an education and to drop out would be a waste of money, just because you don’t like school or your too lazy to do the work doesn’t mean you just give up. Life’s not fair and we learn that through the worst but we still have to get up off our lazy butts and do the work.

I definitely think people should stay in school so they can get a good job because if you go into a job interview and they ask you your education, and you say, “I’m a drop out,” then they won’t want to hire you. When people say they hate school or something like that you think that maybe that person won’t have a good job when they grow up. It helps the economy to have people that have lower end jobs but it might not make that person happy. They’ll probably regret it. So be cool and stay in school.

I think that the teachers should confront the class about the future they might have if they drop- out and the future they could have if they stay in school. If you try to ensure them to stay in school and communicate with them on a personal level. Pull them aside and ask how things are at home and get to now them like the back of your hand. Make sure you let them know you understand because sometimes it is because of problems they have at home. Do social activities in big groups to the whole class. Let them know that their future depends on school. Make sure it is safe environment. If something looks like they are having a hard time with someone or with something.

Personally, i think some students actually do drop out of school for good reason. One person on the show said that her brother dropped out because the family needed money and got a job. Im sure there's many students out there who are in a similar situation. Also, many of their parents were dropouts and that doesn't exactly send the clearest message to their kids to stay in school. I think if some of the teenagers can find some sort of motivation whether it be rewards for good grades or personal reasons at school, it might help the dropout rates go down. Also if they set some sort of goal that they want to work towards, aka a job, college degree, etc. that might help them see that what they want most in life usually requires a G.E.D. I think that schools should have a speaker come in every now and again and talk to the students about how most jobs with good pay require a high school level of education. They could explain that if they want to go farther in life and possibly own their own car or house and support a family they need to stay in school. I do agree with what someone posted earlier that there is no way that is set-in-stone to keep kids in school. However if we can make it seem more appealing, more might make the choice to remain in the classroom.

I think that all of the schools should not have us get up so early in the morning,
i also think that we shouldn't have to take extra classes,(drama,pe, etc)
But i definitly agree that kids need to stay in school because they do not know everything yet, and they don't know how important it is to have a high paying job.
something else that might help is with out extra classes it would make it a shorter day so then it wouldn't get so long and boring.

In my opinion there really isn’t anything you can tell the person you’re talking to besides to not drop out of school. It’s basically their decision; I mean you could tell them to think about your future, their job, or what their future children might think. Education is great for you future, that’s why we are in school to learn what we need to learn to help our future. Dropping out of school is one thing, but your education will last you a life time.

I think people that are going to drop out are just messin up their entire life. If you graduate then you can get a better job and have a better life. Usually if you decide that you are going to drop out then you have already made up your mind. To try and prevent that teachers can talk about the effects that it will have on your future. It’s stupid to drop out!!! It will mess you up big time!!!!

I think that they want to drop because; they get board of listening to the same teacher every day. And how they can be watching T.V, being with their friends, and stuff. I think it’s their chose not ours they can do what ever they want it’s their life not ours.

I think that the students are board from doing the same thing all day every day. So the teachers should warn the students about what their life could be like if they don’t finish school then tell them what could happen if they stay in school.

We came up with these four ideas for helping students stay in school:

1.Classes more interesting with more hands on activities and give students the chance to participate in their grades through grading agreements.

    2. Late start days give staff a chance to communicate and prepare for the special needs of some students.

    3. School could create partnerships with the community to help students get jobs after school.

    4. Give students some kind of reward for every 6 weeks they stay in school.

I think that maybe if we had more time to just hang out it would be a lot easier for us to deal with the school thing just on the side. Also if we could get more sleep instead of having to get up at 5:30 every morning it would also be easier for us to learn and function with the class.
There should also be more fun activities like soccer, football, baseball, etc.
It would keep us more in shape and healthy and also give us something to do in the off season of our regular sports.

I would tell people, who tell me that they want to drop out, that it is their decision, and they should do what they want. Make school more fun and interesting by playing games after we learn. Students should understand what happens when they do drop out. Encourage your peers to help the learning process. Let students move around during class, especially if it's long.

I think that it is important for kids to stay in school so they can be successful in life. It is crazy to me how kids can enjoy middle school and then in high school they drop out. I think that they should pass a law that makes teens finish high school, because they haven't become adults yet. So when they finish high school then they have the choice to choose what they want to do with their education.

We think that these are some good ways to help prevent dropping out:

    1. A better education gets you a better job and gives you more choices. That could equal more money.

    2. It's their choice; but if students understand what those choices mean. they might make better.

    3. Helping students see how school relates to the real world.

I would tell people that wanted to drop out that it’s their choice, but they’d be a lot better off if they stayed in school. To encourage them to keep showing up to class, the schools should find some ways to interest the kids, and make school a little more fun.

I think that school systems should make an age limit on who can drop out of school. Maybe school systems should make us have fewer tests like the crct, eoct, itbs, and the reason is because kids get sick and tired of the same test every year that takes up a whole week. If schools made it more fun than student shouldn’t mind staying in school.

  162. Ricardo

I think that dropping out of school is not a very wise thing to do. You should consider your future before making a bad decision like dropping out of school. If you don’t drop out you have a better chance of getting a high paying job and better living conditions.

However bad dropout rates are a lot of students don’t drop out because they want to. Some students even drop out three or four times before they graduate but their drop outs still count to the total even if it’s one student. So if school is bad just keep trying and you can reach the end.

My best friend wanted to drop out once. I was really concerned and asked him about it. He said that he didn’t think that his family would be able to pay for him to go to college so he didn’t see the piont in getting his education. I talked to him about it and told him that if his grades were good enough that he could get a scholarship that could pay for part of his tuition and books. I knew he was smart enough to do it. I also told him to get a job now, that he was old enough to get one, and save up the money for any other costs. He still wasn’t quite sure but he satyed in school. I would study with him to help him out. His grades went up and I am happy to say that he is still in school now.

To help kids stop from droppin gout of school I think that schools should offer more help or financial needs to students who need it. Most of the kids that do drop out are usually doing it to be able to work and make money for their family or they don’t see the point in going if they are failing. With the extra help from school systems, I think that this would give students a better reason for staying in school.

What I would tell a person who is thinking about dropping out of highschool is not to because dropping out will get you no where in life. If you stay in school then you atleast have a chance to go to college, get a good education, and have a good paying salary once you get out of college. A solution to this problem is to make help the students as much as possible and show them the rewards they can get for staying in school.

I think that the rate of kids dropping out per second is outrageous. In today’s society, you need a good education. If you do not go to high school or college, then you will have a low paying job or maybe not even a job.

The dropout rate has been increasing pretty rapidly throughout the years. Many theories have been tested to try to stop this ongoing phenomenon but none of them seem to work. The enviroment seems to be what is effecting the kids. The kids at the school in california live in a rough enviroment that doesn’t really promote hish school diplomas. If somehow they could clean up the city and get the elders to act in a way that is responsible for the children to learn buy, the kids might start doing right.

    September 17, 2008 at 2:45 pm |

I know there is a lot that can be done to encourage kids to go to school; of course I would talk to the parents first because that is where the kids get their influence. Next I would just make it a positive environment. I wouldn’t say to pay for being there. The object of high school is to get good grades and go to college. If someone were go to school and get paid, that doesn’t mean they’d put the effort into their work. Paying for good grades, I think, is also a bad idea because kids who are not as smart will just give up and want to drop out and get a job. Making school a positive and FUN environment is enough.

    September 17, 2008 at 2:45 pm |
  171. Chase

I think that they should care about their students but at the same time they should just get out of their business. Most students probably don’t come because they have to walk through gang territory and are afraid they might get caught in the middle of a shootout or some other violent activity. If the school had buses to pick people up maybe a lot more people would come to school all four years.

    September 17, 2008 at 2:46 pm |
  172. Bobby

A person has no control over another person. They can do whatever they want and that includes dropping out of high school. Yes, it is a bad choice to make when thinking about the future and what it holds for everyone, but the present is more important. Some families have low incomes and their kids are forced to work in order to survive at the present moment. For some dropping out of high school is just the best option for them but is probably not going to be the best choice when it comes time to start their own families.

    September 17, 2008 at 2:46 pm |
  173. laura

I think that dropping out of high school is a big mistake because you have to deal with trying to find a job. You need to have a degree now in school just to get a job as a teacher can you image what you need to be a lawyer. You need to be able to study your information for a time and to learn what needed for your career is. It is a hard life if you drop out of high school and do nothing to try and get a job to work or something you cannot live in this day in age with a GED you have to have a PHD or Master degree to get a good job.

I guess most the people that drop out of high-school do it to support their families or something, maybe the school system or the government should do something to help out those families. Like in the video they said most the people dropping out were Hispanic, there are a lot scholarships in colleges for Hispanics and being a Hispanic myself I have seen kids striving to go to school, parents wanted the best for their kids but thought the right thing was to work.

Well... there is no actual way to keep people in school it’s in there mentality they think it isn’t worth going to or they don’t have allot of Parental support. My suggestion is increase awareness of why you need go to school and what it can help you accomplish.

  177. Karl

I think that one solution to trying to stopping the dropout rate or maybe at least slow it down would be to guarantee a job or an internship at a company so that the students at the school would have an incentive to stay in school until their senior year. An if that doesn’t work then maybe give the jobs to the students earlier but then give them a raise at the same job once they have finished school.

P.S. hey Carl, I think your name ROCKS !!!!

Students who drop out of high school are just setting themselves up for failure. Most dropouts never end up prospering and they live in poverty their whole life. They would help themselves out a lot if they would just stay with it through high school and college. I understand that some people can’t afford college but if they can then there is not excuse not to go. If you go it opens a lot of opportunities for you to be successful in life.

Most people drop out of school for the same reasons. There not learning anything in their classes and that they would much rather have a real job. I myself am a high school student and I really can say I haven’t learned anything that could be applied to an average, working class job since I was in 8th grade. I have a part time job, and if we lived in a world with a smaller population and better chances to be able to feed a family without a high school education than I would not be here. I’d much rather be making money then being in this classroom.

My opinion about dropping out is that I myself wouldn’t do it because you would get a better education if you stay in school and if you drop and to get a job to get money it wouldn’t be that good of job because you wouldn’t have any experience to get a good job or the schooling you would need.

There should be more fun stuff in school. Hands on activities so students get involved in their learning. Individualized learning to help students meet their education needs. Teacher guided and student directed learning. Rewards system. The ability to retake and redo assignments. These ideas might reduce the student's stress and they might stay in school.

Sometimes it’s ok to drop out of school because of specific reasons. But dropping out of school because it’s to hard is unacceptable. There are programs to help you through it. I think if someone wants to drop out of school they should make them be responsible and say that if you are going to u have to take a 2 day course to make them realize how everything is going to happen. And give them help saying if they drop out they can always come back.

I think that no matter if school is too hard for some people.
I think that they should just finish school off. Some times it might be like major boring, or that you can’t stand it because it is soooo hard. But it doesn’t matter you should stay in school to be educated when u are older and so that you can succeed in jobs and Finance stuff. DON’T GIVE UP keep moving forward no matter what happens.

Most students think dropping out will make you look cool, but truthfully, it won’t! When you drop out you are pretty much leaving everything behind and you aren’t going to get a very good job. If u don’t go to high school you can’t get a good job and if you want to be something that entitles college, if you don’t go to high school you cant go to college, meaning you cant get that higher education job. Also you will look back and think “wow I should of stayed in school because now I look at all my friends and they have great jobs like, lawyer, doctor, and teacher, I wish I could have had that chance! It is up to you to choose your attitude about stuff and if you want to have fun in school then make your learning fun.

I think drop outs need two think a lot before they drop out. They also think about the future and how it will be with and without at the least a GED. Think you should try as best as you can to graduate but I think it’s also ok if you have a good reason.

People who are thinking about dropping out should think about why they want to drop out and what is going to happen to them in 7 years. Where will they be living? What will they be doing? How are they going to live without graduating High School? They won’t be able to get into college with out the credits that high school gives them and not very many employers want to hire drop outs. So they might not be able to get a job. So if you know someone who is thinking about dropping out you should talk to them about what is going to happen later in there life.

I think dropping out of school is totally pointless, and a bad choice on there behalf. If you drop out of school you can’t get a good job, and you can’t make very good money in the future. Parents shouldn’t be paid to be involved in there child’s education. They should already want to be involved and know what’s going on. Kid’s should not be paid to go to school or to study, only if they have actually earned the money with there grades. Sad to say, but I know some people who have dropped out of school, and they have an average low paying job. If you stay in school it will be a lot more rewarding later in the future, when you have a good job, are making a lot of money, and can actually afford the things you want instead of saving your money for a million years. Not saying that saving your money is bad you can just afford more later in the future if you stay in school. I don’t think a lot can be done about kids dropping out of school, it’s totally there choice but, parents should be more involved to.

I think that student dropouts are sometimes necessary. Like some people in the community, they are very poor and need money to live. Sometimes they should dropout and get a job if you or your family can’t pay for your home or food. The people who dropout are missing out in a once in a lifetime chance. You will get a much better job if you finish high school. Like I say, live like today is you last. Try your hardest. At the end of the day you should be able to say that I am proud of the things I did today.

Dropping out is only bad if you don’t have a good reason. Some teenagers do for example they need to help support the family or maybe they have a kid and they have to stay home with the baby all day. But then there is others who are on drugs or they think it is cool to drop out, or they are board with it. And if a student is board with school then they should have a chat with their teachers and see if the could adjust a little bit and maybe the teacher can tell the students all the dangers of dropping out. So don’t drop out it will ruin your life.

I think that dropping out of school is a mistake for the student. I mean, think if you didn’t drop out you would be able to get what ever job you want. I bet no one wants to be a janitor for the rest of their life until you retire and don’t have enough money to buy a house so you have to stay in a old folks home and have to play checkers or chess. But if you finish high school and maybe go to college you can be a marine, a scientist, the president, a lawyer what ever you what. You can if you finish high school and your determined enough.

I think everybody should stay in school, at least until they finish high school. It’s important to stay in school because if you drop out to get a job, you probably won’t get that job because most jobs require at least a high school diploma. I think the only reason you should drop out of school is if you have a baby or you have a family emergency that you need to take care of and you can’t take care of it if you are in school. If you have a problem with your teacher or the curriculum, you should go and talk to the teacher or the principal. If you think the class is boring, you should ask the teacher if there is any possible way that he/she could liven things up or something. -If you think that it’s cool to drop out, then you better think twice.

To stop drop outs school should be more interesting. The teachers should invovle the kids much more often. Let them make mistakes to learn from. Not he teacher. Yes I know you try hard to involve us ,but do something more fun the worksheets. have us do an experiment or something and no a song and poem do not count. Do something cooler like make an overhead or do a lesson outside for science.

If you want a better job, stay in school. Maybe busing or more police on the streets before and after school would help students feel safer when they walk through gang controlled neighborhoods. Taking back neighborhoods. Better access to counseling, self-help, support groups, and other agencies. Maybe house those offices on campus. Help students know what their choices are and what's available to them. Rewards and incentives.

I think that dropping out is a horrible thing to do. I no some people do it to support their families but for the people who do it because they don’t want to that’s demeaning. If people were to drop out of high school it would just stop at middle school and that’s it, no high school. So don’t drop out you have your whole life ahead of you.

I think dropping out is very bad because then later on in life you wont have the educational skills you need to get a job and, or, support your family. I don’t think the the fact that their parents didn’t graduate has anything to do with them not graduating, it is their choice and they should not base it on the fact that their parents didn’t graduate. However it might still have something to do with their parents have brought them up, or there home life. I think once a person has made up their mind about dropping out of high school then their mind is made up, although you can still do all you can to try to help them stay in school, but I don’t think paying them is the answer.

Make it more enjoyable, or just let students do wat they want. u can lead a horse to water but u cant make it drink. but i can see many arguments with that. like crime rate and such... i think u should have to certified to be a parent and to understand wats important in your childs life, and u have to inforce it. most people function better in a society with a routine.

I think that if kids make an effort to do well in school, then they should get somewhat of an award. Maybe if that kid got a C or above on at least 3 of their home works for the week, then they should get taken out for ice cream, or maybe they want that new Disturbed c.d. Parents ask them how school went, MAKE them give you a decent answer, and let them know that you truly care!!! Also, get more involved in their school, Go to parent teacher conferences.

I think that if people want to drop out of school they should think about what they are doing. People say that their family has no money why would they drop out. If you go to school you get a better job than if you just drop out. and I don’t think that it would help to make it a law cause they might break laws any way. It would just be another law they would break. So don’t drop out of school.

I think that you shouldn’t drop out because if you drop out you will have no education an then when you kids need help on a math question you wont be able to help them because you have no clue what they are saying. If you drop out you wont get a diploma an without that you wont get a good job an without a good job you wont have a nice house to live in with you children in the future. Drop out usually don’t make it far an if they do thy were blesses dropping out might seem nice because you have no school but before you do think about your future.

I think that highschool kids should not drop out. It ruins your life. I think if the teachers added some fun to the teaching that kids would not drop out. I think you can add a little fun like I said before but not a lot. I think it is ridiculous for kids to come to school for money. Parents should talk to their children about staying in school. I think going to school is important because we are privileged to get an education. College may not seem like an option but keep working toward it and your sure to get there. Bill is cool.

I think it’s unrealistic for parents to have to pay students just to go to school. If they don’t care, they don’t care, and if adults use money to bribe high school-ers to go to school, that doesn’t motivate them to get good grades.
On the other hand, PARENTS getting paid to care about their children’s’ successes or fails?! That’s highly unethical and unhealthy for the child’s motivation to get to school. I think that if parents gave some motivation with homework, the student would think that work is important enough to give some thought, or to try their hardest.
The root of most of the problem is the parents. Most students look up to their parents to tell them what to do and follow their example. I have never thought of dropping out, seeing as I can always ask for help from my parents.

What I would tell a would-be drop-out’s parents rather than going to the student themselves, and tell them to care about the schoolwork of the student. If that didn’t work, I’d try to talk the student out of dropping out by telling them to try to make work more fun, like a game.

I think that kids who are wanting to maybe drop out should stop and think about 10 years down the road when their an adult and are trying to get a job or support their families. They’re probably going to have a much better chance if they have a good education. And usually school can be fun so if they’re saying that they think it’s so boring, maybe they should stop having such a negative attitude and enjoy themselves a little more. I think that the whole economy needs to be better and that people need to help them out. Some of the stories I’ve heard are simply heartbreaking. A lot of people think that no one cares about them and I think if they just know how much other people want them to succeed and are there to help them out, they might be more determined.

I would tell them that it doesn’t make any sense to drop out because if they do, they won’t be able to get a good job. That means they will probably be living off of minimum wage, which can’t support a family very well. To encourage them to stay in school, I can point out the good things that come with a good education.

I would ask them if they have a dream for their life and if they would like that dream to become a reality. If they say "Yes" I would stress that they need an education for their dreams to come true and for their future to be bright. I would tell them they have the ability to work hard for their dreams and future. Not just for them but, for their future children and families. 😀

well first of all students drop out because they belive just because they have got to the age they can drive and make their own money and not have to listen to their parents that they wont need education but most of them go back to school after a couple of years &after they have realized that they do need an education to succed and make it somewhere in the future.

After watching CCN student news, my classmates and I discussed what we could do to help solve the dropout rates. One boy, in a joking mannor, suggested that we expell students before they could drop out, so the rate wouldn't be so high [haha]. However, in a serious mannor, another boy spoke up about how alot of students that drop out are actually in lower class families and can't afford to go to school because of the cost of supplies, transportation, or other issues. He thought that maybe paying students like the other states would be a good option. It would kept students get good grades AND earn money. It would help them want to study and do well in classes also, and raise test scores. But the students would only be paid if they got Cs or better. Failing and getting paid is a no-no.

There actually hasn't been anyone who has dropped out at our school. At our school it's pretty amazing, a small school with rich and poor. Where everyone knows everyone and theres little drama. We basically all get along. There isn't much sports, but when your on a team your like family. Yes it's four years in high school, but you have to think further ahead to your future and think of what your children need and want. My cousin had dropped out of school, due to having a baby boy her Sophomore year. She is now living with her mother. So you really have to plan ahead and do well in school.

I think classes should have fewer people, so that the teachers can pay more attention to each student, and give them what they need according to each student's level. By doing so the students who are smarter than others won't be bored and the students who are slower won't get so frustrated.

I actually just graduated from my high school last year and honestly, yeah, didn't enjoy school, it was boring here and there but i still had the right mindset for the reason why i was going to school. I believe that going to high school is a very essential thing rather than a GED because you learn more than just book smart.

My solution is, a right mindset, maybe not a military mindset, but teens these days need to understand the point in life, and have a goal for their future.
Im sure that it will be hard for many students financially but thats a different problem.

Schools need to communicate with each other.

The only way to get this many students from dropping out is a restructuring of the entire school system. One where high school students are treated like adults instead of liabilities, teachers that respect all students as equals, classes focus more on student interest instead of government interest (And by that I mean a greater range of electives and less required courses to take). Take a look at Finland’s school system: going to school only encompasses 9 years instead of 12 or so, and where there’s just high school for us, it’s either academic or trade schools for them! And they lead the world in test scores and enrollment! The U.S. needs to have more options offered to students than just high school, because this is in fact a 19th century school system, and while it worked for the Prussians then, it’s not working for the U.S. now. It’s not the students; it’s the outdated system they are forced into for 12 years that kills their interest in learning.

Personally I think that something needs to do something about this issue!
I think that kids that drop out, don't have anyone to look up to as a role model, or don't have a good life at home. I think that the drop out age should be at 18 because that is when you are a adult and at 16 teens don't really know what they want. Dropping out gets you no where in life, everyone should know that. I think that kids that drop out need to get help. It's simple...get an high school education..get a good job and get paid more money:)

People should be able to go to school as long as they want to. It would be their fault that they didn't finish school and they wouldn't be able to go get the job that they wanted. Also they shouldn't drop out because they still wouldn't learn how to do important things in life. Students shouldn't be able to drop out any ways unless they are eighteen years old. That is why students shouldn't be able to drop out of school!!!!!!

I think that students should not even think about dropping out. Why would you???? I mean your not going to be getting a good paying job anytime soon if you drop out at like 17..... you cant even join the army without a high school diploma. I don't think that parents should let their kids drop out, something should be done about it. I believe that dropping out of high school is pointless.

I really don't like school that much, but I think that paying parents or students to go to school is just wrong. School is something that is supposed to be something for you to learn, not get a pay check. If they want to drop out of school I would mention that there are almost no jobs that you can get without a high school diploma. Staying in school may be boring but it will help in the long run.

I would never dropout of school. Even though school is boring I still want a future that will lead me to a better life. For those kids who are planning to dropout rethink that. If you are not good in school try a little harder. Things just might change and you will end up getting a good job alter in life. School is who you are. School is your future

I think that to keep teens in school we should show them what its like without an education. Without education, especially when you don't have at least a high school diploma. you can' t get a good job that pays enough to support a family. Maybe if we just show teens what happens after you drop out, later in life, they might get the message.

I think that teachers should not be a scary authority figure, but more of a friend with experience to students. If this act is carried out, than teachers are more likely to get a reaction of truth, questioning, and trust. This could possibly help the percentage of drop outs decrease

Students dropping out is completely discouraging. As an 8th grader preparing to go to High School, I realize how important it is to stay in school. After all, you can't even get a decent job without a college degree, if you can even get a job. In today's society, a citizen can't even receive a job in the army without going all the way through High School. If you are thinking of dropping out, I have some advise for you; think about this, how will you feel a few years from know when all your friends are graduated from High School and you could have been with them. Wouldn't you feel regretful? Stick to your guns and fight through it no matter how rough it may seem. Think of how good it will feel to be free and you know you deserve it. Good luck to all of you and remember that education is priority number one!!

For anyone who wants to drop out, I'd tell them that school is not all that bad. You get to talk to friends, learn new things, and have fun (without parents). So don't drop out or you could lose all of this and have to be with your parents or by yourself. For less people to drop out we should be able to have more fun in the class rooms and sit where we want, then maybe less will drop out. Also we should be payed for doing our work on time and turning it in on time.

Mason: They should see the importance even though school can be boring.
Jes: If rewards are necessary, then we should do it. Reward kids, not parents!

The way I would get people to stop dropping out is I would let them know what life can be if they still go through with school. If they are a drop-out, they would probaly not have an easy time getting a job; if they even did get one, it probably wouldn't be a good one. So I would encourge people to go through school because they would be better of in life with the knowledge of the years.

I feel it is extremely important to get a high school diploma because it will help you so much in the future when trying to get a job and you could probably get a job without one, but it wouldn't be as well-paying, and you wouldn't have a chance to be more successful in your career. Plus, all colleges require you to have a high school. If I knew someone who was going to drop out, I would tell them they're making a mistake they'll regret for the rest of their life. A way to encourage kids to stay in school might be when ever they got a good grade or showed great improvement, make sure they know it and say encouraging words to boost their sel-confidence.

I can understand why people would care if there is a high dropout rate. Sure. But if students want to drop out of school b/c they think that they won't do anything with their life, they are too lazy, what ever their reason may be; i don't think that we should try and change their minds. I say, that if they want to drop out of school, mess up their own lives on an assumsion that they will fail anyway so why try, then let them. It's their life. Let them do with it what they want. Let them pay the consequenses.

I as a person think that The school district should not have to give the kids money, to do there work. I think that the kids should not be so lazy and do there work. Students Shouldn't drop out of school because when want to get a really nice job and being paid really good money and when these people that look back your high school and middle school years and look at what your grades and see if you done really bad and they see that you drop out of school people will think that you're not the one there looking for and your over in the chair sweating thinking hopefully they pick you and they don't and your gonna ask why and then you'll think back and then you'll know why you didn't get that job you wanted and then you will say to yourself why did i drop out of school when i was younger cause then it will mess up your life really bad so that's why i think dropping out of school is a bad thing to do in your life 'cause just maybe you will get to do something good in your life and just maybe you'll just have 99.9 % chance in your life that you'll get to do something right in your life.

I think that there isn’t a whole lot you can do about it other than let them know their options and the reasons why you should stay in school. I think some kids drop out because they’re frustrated with school or they’re not having any fun or maybe there are people there who pick on them. But I do think that it is a good to drop out just because of that. If kids are dropping out because they are poor then they are ruining their chances of ever being successful. If kids are too poor to be in school I think they should ask for financial aid to help them get through, kids shouldn’t let the opportunity of an education slip through their fingers because it’s something that you will use for the rest of your life.

personally i don't think they should be aloud to drop out right when they get into high school. why don't we make them stay in for at least a year or something and then if they want to drop out after that then that is their choice. i guess that's the good thing about living in america. u have choices and opinions.

I think kids who want to drop out of school are taking a horrible route. What kind of good job can you get nowadays without a high school diploma? I can tell you...not a very good one!! First of all, parents should be encouraging their children to stay in school and do great in life. Instead, these parents are being irresponsible and letting the kids do what they want. Kids who drop out of school early on have a constant struggle with money and their lives. I believe parents need to step up and start doing their job!

I personally do not think that kids should be getting paid to attend school. In some school's they offer a really nice perfect attendance award, like a new car or computer, etc. But, they have to attend school every day, not just go to school every now and then. For some kids it is hard to stay in school with their family situations. Some kids have to help provide for their families and work all day, or in some places there are local jobs that offer very high wages with no education needed. Although those jobs are hard work and very dangerous, kids think that taking up those jobs is the easy way in life. All in all, don't straight up pay the kids for attending school, just reward them better.

kids dropping out school is crazy i think if u ask. Well why are the parents allowing there kids to drop out school in the first place. The parents of those kids need to realize that they are being a bad parent, because the kids need to go to school so they can get and eduaction. It is very had today to get a job with out a diploma

I think in order to keep the students from dropping out, we need to not give them rewards because then the students will expect things everytime they do something. But, we need to make the academics more enjoyable and a little more challenging to the students to test us to see on what we know. I would tell a student drop out that they know what wil happen if they drop out because they would not get a higher paying job and it would be a problem for them in the future.

I don't think that that people should drop at of school, unless u have to.

Students who drop out of school struggle harder than people struggle than people who struggle in school. It is better to stay in school because what you would want to be in life, you would have to go thought school first. In addition, to people that say they drop out because of stress and because of other people. Especially families, people or an older sibling has to drop out to help the family. That is just something different, but other than that, the students that are dropping out for fun. Trust me you’ll need the education when you grow up.

I am a true believer that school isn't for everyone, but I also believe that in today's world, a good education is the key to everything. If one of my friends told me they were dropping out I would try to get the whole story. After I heard their story I woud try to convince them to try and hack it, school isn't that hard and I am more then willing to help them out. If that didn't work I would try to convince them to go for their GED at the very least. I deffinetly wouldn't give up on them and I would try to be there for them.
