Cheerleading Uniform Compromise

Posted: 07:19 PM ET

Following up...

Here's the compromise offered by the Ohio school district:  Monroe High School cheerleaders get special T-shirts to wear during class to show their school spirit (rather than wearing their uniforms).  And next year, the school pays for new uniforms that fit the dress code.

Doesn't sound like a bad deal to me, unless you're a senior.

I think that's fair. The school should provide uniforms that fit the dress code. This seems like a good comprosise to me. I still think this whole thing was unnecessary and could've easily been avoided. Now the school's rep is a bit worse because of this whole situation.

Ben   August 28th, 2008 8:28 pm ET

i think that the skirts were not too short and that the teachers and principles need to realize that times are changing and and pants are getting tighter and and the shorts and and skirts are getting shorter and and the straps are getting thinner this is something that has really ticked me off for so long plusthe school made the uniforms so why are they banning them seriously thats like buying an 82" plasma screen tv and just throwing it away with out evean turnin it on.

Molly   August 28th, 2008 8:41 pm ET

I think it is ridicoulus for the school not to let the cheerleaders wear their skirts on game days. If it was really an issue it would have been stopped years ago. Why, all of a sudden did this controversy come up? It makes no sense.

Madi   August 28th, 2008 9:03 pm ET

I think that when I look at cheerleaders skirts, they aren't that bad. I think the length does not have to do with any kind of influnce.

Ara   August 28th, 2008 11:01 pm ET

I think this compromise is fair enough. Student should keep their dress code. The T- shirt would break the unity in the school. The uniform is better way to learn keeping rules, and responsibility.
In my school, in korea, almost every school prohibit to wear other cloths. We think that is the promise with school, and that is the basic courtesy.

Lane   August 28th, 2008 11:53 pm ET

I think that the school is being to strict about it, if they didn't want the uniforms to be short then why did they order them that way. If they can't wear them on game day then why do we even have cheerleaders.

shelby   August 29th, 2008 6:26 am ET

That is a good idea, but the cheerleaders might not like the T-shirt!

Jeffrey   August 29th, 2008 9:54 am ET

The cheerleaders are just doing it to show school spirit, and they should be allowed to wear the uniforms on game days. The skirts should not have been made that short in the first place, if this was such a big deal about wearing them to school.

Melissa   August 29th, 2008 11:37 am ET

The cheerleaders should be allowed to wear their uniforms to school because they made the team and earned the privelege of wearing the uniform. It should be the girl's decision to wear the skirts on game days because that is their uniform. This will impact the entire cheerleading community because all schools might have to go to longer skirts now.

Melanie   August 29th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

The cheerleaders should be allowed to wear their tops, but they should not be allowed to wear their bottoms because no other athletes are able to wear their bottoms. The girls could have chosen to wear shorts and leggings underneath. Cheerleaders should not get special attention because of their social status. Since other players cannot wear their bottoms, cheerleaders should not be exempt from the school rules.

Dwight   August 29th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

Personally, I think that dress code should be loosened as far as all sports attire goes. Students should be able to wear what they want because clothing expresses one's self. Most students would dress within reason.

Melanie   August 29th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

The cheerleaders should not be able to wear their uniform bottoms because the other athletes cannot wear their uniform bottoms. The cheerleaders could have worn leggings and shorts underneath their uniforms. They are not above the rules.

Danny   August 29th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

My question is, why did the parents buy such tight ,short skirt uniforms anyways? If the school blames the parents for the uniforms not meeting the dress code, then the only people the parents can blame are themselves. They should have had all the cheerleaders try on the uniforms to see exactly how they fit. If they did do something like that, then they know the uniform skirts are REALLY short AND the entire uniform is tight on the cheerleaders. If parents know their daughters are wearing uniforms like this, then why do they allow it? Don't parents NOT want their daughters wearing short, tight clothes? Is'nt that a parents responsibilty? To monitor the clothes their kids are wearing???

cordell   August 29th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

ithinkthey should be able to wear them on gamdays and if they are getting upset now why all the years before

wyatt   August 29th, 2008 5:58 pm ET

whats wrong with their uniforms girls at my school wear them and there in jr. high

Hunter   August 29th, 2008 6:15 pm ET

This is a good way to handle the whole problem, and is a good idea.Sorry for the seniors though.Let's see if no more problems come!

Jess   August 29th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

I think that the skirts are fine, but the cheerleaders will mosst likely NOT WEAR LEGGENS!!!!!!

Skylerita   August 29th, 2008 7:23 pm ET

It is a good idea that the school came up with that idea of having the shirt for the cheerleaders. But, I also agree with you that seniors might not like the idea. MONROE is my middle name!!!!

jayson   August 29th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

that is it not right. And they should only were them on game day and that as long as they act lady like who cares.

Lizz   August 29th, 2008 7:37 pm ET

If the school had some common sense, they would've done this a long time ago. Duh!!

joy   August 29th, 2008 7:47 pm ET

The dress code is a weird policy. The T-shirts is not a bad idea but what if the T-shirts are something no one likes? Than the cheerleaders would not want to wear them. I can agree that the small skirts are too small for any school event but because the small skirts could cause less friction than any long pants.

Elizabeth   August 29th, 2008 10:01 pm ET

If the school has I dress code why did they not go by it in the first place? I think they should get shirts and shorts for those specific days and then change before the game.

Samantha=]   August 29th, 2008 10:29 pm ET

I think that they should have thought about that before they let them buy them...they do have to approve them first so why didn't they complain before????

Jasmine   August 30th, 2008 4:27 am ET

I think school shouldn't make studens to wear uniform. It's their own right to wear what they want.

Rachel   August 30th, 2008 10:59 am ET

i think the should of had uniforms that fit school dress code in the first place

Laura   August 30th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

I think that school should think about modesty with this issues. Because the cheerleader uniforms are getting inmodesty today. I feel that the ban on the cheerleaders wearing their uniforms during the school day is a good thing. How many guys check out the cheerleaders in those uniforms on the game days? Cheerleader uniforms are for events and other things not for guys to look a girl over to see if she is in good figure. I feel that the t-shirt is the best thing to do for the school game days.

miranda   August 30th, 2008 9:46 pm ET

the cheerleaders are just trying to support their school ,but should only be able to were the uniforms on games.

Cheryl   August 31st, 2008 3:44 pm ET

I LOVE YOU CARL AZUZ! IM YOUR NUMBER ONE FAN! I LOVE YOUR JOKES

Carissa   August 31st, 2008 4:19 pm ET

I think that the skirts are not really that bad. Most of the cheerleading skirts that i see at high schools around our area have slits in them that come really high up. So the skirts at the high school in ohio are conservative compared to most small schools in the state or texas.

scool123   August 31st, 2008 7:24 pm ET

i think it is stupid that they wont let the 8-9 year old team play because he is to good.....i think it is just stupid

scool123   August 31st, 2008 7:26 pm ET

i dont see wats wrong with showing school spierit and they look fine the way they are.......forget dress code

Nash   August 31st, 2008 10:28 pm ET

I'm glad that next year the school will let them where skirts that fit in with the dress code because if they changed the skirts now and make the parents pay for new ones than it would be a mess.Trust me I know what it's like to pay for a cheerleading outfit and it's alot of money.

Alysha   September 2nd, 2008 7:40 am ET

I love what they are doing with the whole getting new cheerleading outfits so they can wear them to school on game day.

Mark   September 2nd, 2008 3:03 pm ET

Other than the first comment, I wonder if these comments are from anyone over the age of 18. The school is being fair, or even more than fair. A dress code is important and school spirit is out of control if it disrupts and detracts from class study. I doubt that very many tax payers would have a problem with cutting cheer leading totally out of the budget in favor of more help for the academic subjects. Get a real life!!!!!!

Paul   September 3rd, 2008 2:10 pm ET

I think that the schools ashould have thought about th dress codes before they had the cheerleading uniforms made.

Tommy   September 3rd, 2008 3:14 pm ET

I think that the whole T-Shirt idea takes the fun away from been a cheerleader. Besides preforming at the games and uniform is like that award for doing something for your school and they should be able to wear them. If the uniform is to short for the taste of some people then make them a bit longer, but we are no talking pants here either so from me T-Shirt bad idea because it is no fair to the cheerleaders.

Tiffany   September 5th, 2008 7:56 am ET

I think that cheerleaders shouldn't wear their uniforms while they're not ready to cheer for others. Although they work hard and will show school spirit, but won't those who didn't make it be hurt when they see all those clothes? Consider others feelings. And besides, it's no big deal if they don't wear the uniforms. And I think some of the cheerleaders' skirts I saw on TV are too short, they should wear a short pants under it, maybe to even avoid an embarrassing moment!

Caiti   September 5th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

i think that they should be aloud to wear the uniformas all day and they could just bring sweat shirts or jackets and tie i aroung=d there waists duh!!!!

Danielle   September 5th, 2008 8:38 pm ET

why can't girls show a little team spirit it's not far and whats a school with out it.

samar   September 6th, 2008 9:59 am ET

i think it is ok

Rebecca   September 6th, 2008 2:59 pm ET

I think that the cheerleaders should be allowed to wear their uniforms game days and at the games. As long as the girls are wearing spandex or whatever under the skirts I dont see the big problem.

james   September 6th, 2008 3:14 pm ET

dear carl i think that cnn canceling the punt is very dum everybody loves you and your pun. yours sencirely james P.S.i love your show bbbyyyyeeeee

Jo Jo   September 7th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

I think that if the cheerleaders were allowed to to wear their uniforms before that they should be allowed to wear them now since it's like a tradition. I know it's against the codes but why let it come up now, right?
It's the type of uniforms your suppose to wear and I don't think it's right.

kentashia   September 8th, 2008 8:36 am ET

There skirts were too high. They should be able to wear them to games but not to school.

destiny & Rina   September 9th, 2008 8:16 am ET

It is ok to where skirts because they are juist sowing team spirit. But them paying for the uniforms next year

Kebndarius   September 9th, 2008 8:19 am ET

The dress code at Morone High school distric is poorly dumb for the cheerleadig sqad .Everyone keeps telling them that their skirts are too short ! Hey if they want they can even tell them their shirts are too short!!!!!

Kathryn   September 9th, 2008 10:44 am ET

I think that cheerleading offits are fine the way they RE. As a girl I would know this. I mean really this is how we meet boys.

Michelle   September 10th, 2008 11:47 am ET

I think that if the school let them order them then they should t=let them were them to school or where ever they want to so if they let them order them then they should be able to wear them

Annastacia   September 10th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

I believe that cheerleaders should choose what they want to wear for uniforms, seniors especially. It’s not a bad idea to have the other part of the team to wear shirts to cover their shown body but seniors on the other hand. Its seniors last year and they technically don’t want to be walking around the school wearing a shirt for the rest of the school year on game days. Come on most students are not bothered by the fact that the uniform is to short, in fact some think they are all ready for the big win that night. It’s the spirit of the cheerleaders to get the team all pumped up and ready to go that night especially for the football players. They like seeing girls in short skirts and tight shirts before they go and work hard for their school to win. Honestly, my opinion is that the cheerleaders should have a little say in how long their uniforms are and if they are to short then the school may step in. Its how the students feeling wearing the uniform that makes the school spirit even more spirit in the team to win that BIG nights game.

madison   September 10th, 2008 8:06 pm ET

in this subject if the school provided the cheer uniforms the should've known tht the cheer uniforms should be with the school dress code. i think they should leave the uniforms just like they are so they can have more money to help the other kids in the school to get a better education.

Tesha   September 10th, 2008 8:36 pm ET

I think that was really stupid they should be allowed to wear their uniforms it shows school spirit!

Alexandria   September 11th, 2008 10:36 am ET

I think that it is unfair that the Morone High cheerleaders don't get to wear their uniforms on game days because i know that cheerleading uniforms are NOT cheap!! First of all, i think that the school should have purchased uniforms that fit the dress code because if they did that to start with, none of this would even have happened. I believe they should just keep it the way it is just for this year but then next year order new uniforms. I dont think its fair to the seniors that on their last year of highschool they have to wear t-shirts instead of their uniforms they purchased.

Sabrina   September 11th, 2008 10:45 am ET

I think its unfair that they do not get to wear their uniforms because i have been a cheerleader and i know how costly those uniforms are. If the school was that strict about their dress code then they would have checked the cheerleaders uniforms before they purchased them. If they would have checked the uniforms then this controversy would have never happend. I think that the cheerleaders should get to keep wearing their uniforms for this year. Then next year they can change the rules and the cheerleaders can wear the uniforms provided by the school.

Stephanie   September 11th, 2008 8:36 pm ET

Yeah, plus wouldnt it be sort of uncomfortable in their uniform all day?! At least they get to wear something that shows everyone a cheerleader. Just sayin ;)

Samuel   September 12th, 2008 9:10 am ET

Well first of all i think that the cheerleading skirts are to short. They need to be longer so when young guys goes to a game. They are not only watching the cheerleaders, but watching the game like they attended too.

Janelle   September 12th, 2008 10:36 am ET

Being a cheerleader myself I think the compromise is not fair. Who wants to wear a skirt that goes down to their knees? I certainly don't. First of all, the uniforms are very expensive and why would someone pay for them if they couldn't wear them during school on game days? Sure they are not the most comfortable things to wear, but it singles out those who are cheerleaders and it shows our school spirit. So I think it's unfair to the cheerleaders if they can't wear their uniforms on game days.

Morgan   September 12th, 2008 8:50 pm ET

I think the cheerleaders should be able to wear the cheerleading uniforms because the parents for them and the school provided them. If they didn't follow the dress code or they didn't like the length the should of changed them before now.

Morgan   September 13th, 2008 11:29 am ET

If the school provides the cheerleading uniforms the cheerleaders should wear them on game day. The school provided them and the parents paid for them. Why shouldn't they wear them.

micah   September 13th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

i dont really think it is that big of a "tradgety" and its only for one day so let them they had to pay for it too and if they pay for it shouldnt they be able to wear them.

Ashley   September 14th, 2008 11:47 am ET

I think the cheerleaders should be allowed to wear their uniforms. They made the team and earned the right to wear them. The school should have made sure the uniforms fit the schools dress code before they went and let the cheerleaders buy them. I’m pretty sure uniforms are expensive too and since they bought them, just let them wear them on game days and to the games.

Elizabeth   September 16th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

I think that people shouldn't spend money on extra T-shirts that match the dress code. Cheerleaders should be able to wear their uniforms to show their school spirit

Aubrea   September 19th, 2008 10:44 am ET

I think they maybe shoulded of check the skirts before they ordered the rested of the unforms for the cheerleaders. maybe they should send back to be fixed or just add more legth to the unforms skirts.

chelsea   September 22nd, 2008 12:15 pm ET

I think that the schools should let the cheerleaders wear their skirts to school. It promotes school spirit and students will know who represents their school at the games. The uniforms they wear are pretty expensive, so they should be able towear them whenever they can. Friday is a day at most schools that is all about spirit. If the girls can't show all of their spirit, then it is not fair to them. Most girls at school get away with dresses and skirts that are shorter than the uniforms, and those are clothes they buy themselves. The school issues these uniforms so it doesn't make sense if they can't wear them.

Trent   October 8th, 2008 2:33 pm ET

I don’t think the school should punish them. The school needs them to cheer them on and if they keep changing things then they wont want to cheer them on because they wont be happy.

blair   March 14th, 2009 9:33 pm ET

I've been cheerling for the last few years now and I find this article rediculous. The football players wear their jersey on game days, cheerleaders are to wear their uniforms. Alot of times we just were our warm ups over them if its that big of a deal. Not to mention we wear spankies underneathe the skirts so the other students wouldnt be seeing anything that wouldnt be out there during the game. Honestly, if you think that the uniform is a problem in school then you might as well take away the cheerleading uniforms from the games too.

chloe   March 27th, 2009 8:12 pm ET

Make cheerlead clothes for all ages
